Annuar Ibrahim Keynote Address in Singapore

Keynote address by Anwar Ibrahim on 20th May 2008 at the CLSA Corporate Access Forum in Singapore, a high-profile gathering of corporate decision makers of the region’s most interesting companies and investment bodies.

Ladies and Gentleman.

On the eighth of March, with fortitude and conviction the people of Malaysia sent a clear message to the powers that be they would not continue to tolerate a corrupt and incompetent government. With resoluteness hitherto unseen they voted the Barisan Nasional out of office in four states and terminated their stranglehold two-third majority in Parliament. In the final toll, the Pakatan Rakyat, that is, the People’s Alliance, now controls five states accounting for about 60% of the nation’s GDP. Additionally, the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur is almost entirely represented by Pakatan representatives in Parliament. After being in power for five decades, the Barisan Nasional meanwhile is still in comatose under this knockout defeat while its dominant and dominating anchor party Umno is in utter turmoil.

By Iban Baru

Read more

NCR – Masing owes Dayaks one big explanation

By Iban Baru

I was baffled and astonished to read the remark recently by James Masing (PRS half-president) in referring to a DAP state assembly person’s debate on the land issue in the Sarawak state assembly as a ‘cultural arrogance”. I wonder, with his doctorate in anthropology, yet he has invented such term which to him simply means: ‘Don’t tell the Dayaks what land means to them and what Dayaks need to do to develop such land’. Special: Dayak Challenge in the 21st Century – Cultural Displacement

To Watch The Video in Youtube, please click here.

For a special Dayak Challenge in the 21st Century – Cultural Displacement programme, the 101 East team spent several weeks travelling across the island to film with different tribes and hear their stories. We spent time with the Penan – one of the few truly nomadic rainforest tribes in the world. Still hunting with blowpipes and spears, they depend entirely on the forest.

They spoke to us about how the logging companies are taking all of that away from them.

We also filmed with members of the Iban tribe who were once feared warriors and headhunters.

They told us how the young are increasingly turning their backs on the Iban way of life, leaving the older members of the tribe as the last custodians of traditions that stretch back centuries.
