The Effects of Aluminium Smelting Plant for Sarawak.

Posted by: Dr. John Brian Anthony

The objective of this article is to highlight to the public on the effects of aluminium smelting plant that the state government intent to set up in Sarawak.

The aluminuim smelting project has been toyed around for a decade by the State government and it has not got off the ground yet. It surfaces with different suitors, the latest being Rio Tinto and a Sarawak government company joint venture.

Recently the aluminium smelting plant investment appears again together with the infamous Sarawak 12 dams plan and bunch together with Sarawak Corridor for Renewal Energy. The aluminium smelting plant has been identified as major “corporate consumer” of electricity in Sarawak that would be provided by one of the 12 dams.

BAKUN electricity being “prostituted”.

In the first place, BAKUN dam alone is sufficient enough to meet the aluminium smelting plant requirement. The state government choose to make the 12 dams packages sweeter for the public to see or even to deceive the public intentionally. Why did Sarawak allow Bakun electricity to be “prostituted” to West Malaysia in the first place? Read more

Are the natives of Sabah and Sarawak being marginalized?

PRU12 bring untold changes
The result of the PRU12 brought untold changes in Malaysian society. To many it gives hope to a united and progressive multi-racial Malaysia. A new generation of voters who sees Malaysia in a new light; equal and just, united and harmonious, transparency and prudence in government and all things must be guided by moderation, compassion and compromise.

The question of native’s (Dayak) being marginalized
In Sabah and Sarawak the natives are asking questions on why do they feel marginalize in Malaysia despite being classified in the Federal Constitution into similar category with Malay in relation to their quotas and reservation in the areas of (1) position in the public services, (2) scholarships, educational or training privileges, (3) permits or licenses for the operation of any trade or business and (4) places in institutions of higher learning providing education after MCE. With the rapid development in the other states of Malaysia, is there a fear among the natives of Sabah and Sarawak that they will be left further behind in important aspects of development. Has the provision in the Federal Constitution for Malays and the natives of Sabah and Sarawak being fairly implemented, to favour none? Read more

Can the Dams help the people of Sarawak?

Sarawak is a land with many rivers and an equatorial forest that is line up with valuable tropical timbers. Building dam is a good reason of cutting that logs and you will just become very rich and successful in life. Does it surprise you that such scheming can happened in Sarawak?

The 12 new dams site are places that have great natural beauty and irreplaceable plants, insects and animals (herbs) etc. Maybe the State government do not really care about all these. It is all about economic opportunities. Do we have responsibilities to hand over this world in a better condition to our future generation? If it goes on the way it is, maybe not. That would be a pity. Read more

Does Dayak has anything to fear about Umno Baru-Pas dialogue?

It is a “one race” talk first and “Islam” is a common goal to both UMNO BARU and PAS. The gross difference between these two parties is the struggle that they pursue. UMNO Baru is nationalist in nature and PAS is for an Islamic nation.

On another note, why is the Prime Minister talking about Malay unity and NOT Malaysian unity. As a Prime Minister he should be concerned with wider issue affecting the country. This is the perenial flip flop trade mark of Abdullah led government and how do we expect this government to manage global oil price increase, inflation and an economy that will not be able to perform. The Sarawak Land Code and the elimination of native customary rights

This article is posted for the education of readers on the Sarawak land code and the BN government efforts to eliminate native customary rights. Dayak must fully understand this information to help them make necessary changes and take actions where possible to help the Dayak community.

The 1957 LAND CODE

THE 1957 LAND CODE remains the principal land law in Sarawak state and classifies all land into five categories: Mixed Zone Land, Native Area Land, Interior Area Land, Reserved Land, Native Customary Land. Native Customary Land (NCL) is defined as ‘land in which native customary rights, whether communal or otherwise, have lawfully been created prior to the 1st day of January, 1958′.

The people dependent on Native Customary Lands, however, do not generally have copies of maps defining which areas of their lands have been officially documented as NCL. Read more

Can we make Dayak’s Non Governmental Organization to work as one?

This is an individual perspective on “Can we make Dayak’s NGO to work as one?”. This idea stemmed out of an earlier challenge, that is “Can Sarawak Dayak National Union be made as the Umbrella body to all Dayak Organization?”.

Why is this an important step forward to the Dayak?
The ever changing political environment, opportunities and challenges is a fact of life that the Dayak must accept. This idea of getting all Dayak NGO to work as one is to challenge the current paradigm that Dayak ethnic group is pursuing separate and specific goals but is not driving the Dayak to a greater political progress and economic achievement. Dayak need to Manage Change

Every time the newspaper reported that the government is pulling down and bulldozed Dayak’s long house or farm house it brings two instantaneous reaction; that of anger at the government and a sense of hopelessness to the Dayak community. It started with a Dayak Iban long house of Rh. Nyawin in 2007 in Bintulu and now the most recent case of the Dayak Kenyah farmhouse in Bintulu-Bakun road on 18th July 2008. In between these two dates are many more cases of Dayak dwelling being pulled down in the name of development throughout the length and depth of Sarawak.

What started these happening?

No perception on what is changed
The country is now streamlining many things, including land law to allow for its development through large commercial enterprise. The Dayak are informed but could not understand the dimension of the changes that is happening. In short, the Dayak have no perception of what the change is about and what it looks like. Read more

What is the implication of Anwar’s arrest to the natives of Sarawak

We were in the final stage of our mid-year business review session when an sms from a friend informed me of Anwar’s arrest. When the management team was told of the news, we looked at one another and we all recognized that the business environment is already difficult to operate and much more difficult to defend our profitability against the back drop of increasing cost of raw materials, logistics etc,. With this news, we have another influencing factor that will affect our business and thus our business plan must take a critical look into the matter. Read more

The Information Minister must now quit his job – he is not qualified.

Is there a match between the debater?

It was a total mismatch – BN Shabery pretended to be a debater with high intelligence. It was not to be. Anwar did not do much to put Shabery where he belongs – Shabery was non factual and say hearsay things – a common knowledge to all. He merely stated the obvious that there is a global increase in the world oil price. Read more

WE MUST NEVER GIVE A TWO THIRD MAJORITY TO ANY GOVERNMENT

Here is the reason why?
A noted constitutional lawyer, Shad Saleem Faruqi estimated that the Malaysian Constitution has been amended 650 times (as several amendments were made each time) over the 48 years since MALAYA independence and later when Malaysia was formed on16th September 1963. What do you think happened to our Federal constitution? The original spirit in which the constitution was first created is then changed. It is changed not for the good of the nation but to serve the political purpose of the government that changed it – the BARISAN NASIONAL NASIONAL. Read more

The Case of Dayak Political Approach

Introduction:
There has been many reflection and argument for more “Dayak unity” in politic among the Dayak communities in Sarawak. The perception of “Dayak disunity” come from the fact that there are many Dayak based party in Sarawak and that despite being the majority group in Sarawak it is not helming the state government. The question is what has gone wrong?

Daak should come under one political party

In the Barisan Nasional coalition from Sarawak are Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), Parti Rayaat Sarawak (PRS), Sarawak Progressive Dayak Party (SPDP), and the strong presence of Dayak in Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) and in the opposition are Sarawak National Party (SNAP) and a new trend, the Dayak joining the Parti Keadilan Rayaat (PKR) after the proposed Malaysian Dayak Congress (MDC) was not approved by the government for registration.

Many Dayak felt that coming together under one political organization, would placed the Dayak in a very strong position to lead the political leadership in Sarawak. Read more
