Dayak earning $59.00 in 10 Years
Posted by Dr. John Brian Anthony
How can that be?
It makes my meeting a particular YB worth while when he shared with me that his uncle just got a share dividend of $59.00 from Salcra after 10 years over three hectares of land that was planted with palm oil. This dividend was given out a few weeks ago.
The YB said he refused to join any government etc organization or person to promote land for palm oil planting anymore. It is not giving the promised return of investment and will never contribute to improve Dayak living standard. At $59.00 for 10 years, or $5.90 a year there is no reason to surrender your land for Salcra to develop. Also is can be translated to less than $1.00 earn per year per acre for the land owner. What great investment scheme is that?
Another story on the same theme
This come from a “Temenggong” – Dayak Community leader, and he told me that he received dividend of $3000.00 for his 19 hectares land for the last 10 years period from Salcra. Wow – these are BN YB talking and an elderly very well respected Iban community leader appointed by the government and sharing their “not too nice” experience in the hand of Salcra. Why and how this happen would be the duty of the Chairman of Salcra, YB Tan Sri Datuk Patinggi Jabu to explain to the Dayak of Sarawak.
One Tuai Rumah (TR) from Kanowit experience
He committed all his lands, with land titles or otherwise to a plantation company in Kanowit. Now after waiting for 12 years, he has not received a single cent of dividend from his promised 30% share. All his gentle request for meetings and letters of appeal to the plantation JV partner fall on deaf eyes. The only answer he got from the company was, “we are making a loss” and that is that!
The TR is now moved to the brink of “unilateral” action. Is this the type of justice that the BN government is bringing to its people. The man has lost all his land including ancestral land because he believed and trusted the government to lead him towards a better life. In response, the government refused to entertain his request to discuss. Do you think he will vote BN?
LCDA
There are a few Dayak staffs in LCDA that are still moving around trying to convince the Dayak to give up their land for plantation. Feedback from the ground is saying that these Dayak employee of LCDA is actively working in the surrounding area of Marudi. They used all sorts of threat on those Dayak long houses that are slow in giving their approval. The District Office in Marudi is also pushing for the surrender of the land and is pressuring the TR in the area to agree. What are these employee trying to gain from – some commission money from the potential develop? Please do not do it for the sake of Dayak future.
Some tactic is to offer TR, $450.00 TR allowance from government and another $400.00 from the developer. That give a total sum of $850.00 which is a princely sum for those staying in rural area. In Sebauh, certain friendly TR are given 4WD vehicle, with the land developer providing the down payment of the vehicle and the monthly payment would be paid by the TR themselves. The TR were given plantation contracts and how long can they sustain their new 4WD? Most TR 4WD in Sebauh has been repossessed by the finance company for not paying the installment. The greater loss is the TR has signed on the agreement to surrender the NCR land to the developer.
Why is LCDA – with 10% share in JV, the land owner being 30% and developer 60% so active and aggressive in pushing for the Dayak to sign over their land through the “deed of Trust” instrument. There must be a sinister agenda I can speculated in order to get the Dayak not to progress quickly. An agenda to control the land as a capital for Dayak so as not to improve their economic standing. An improved Dayak in economic sense would be independent in their thinking and will be a threat to BN or Melayu power.
Government must stop this land grabbing
All those Ministers and Government agency should stop their effort to grab Dayak land. The threat from the Dayak community would be more serious to the threat of Taib Mahmud to their very person. This land development is getting too much, where a Chinese or Taib Mahmud family and relatives has no such land before, they are abusing their power to get all this land from the Dayak. They even changed the law to suit their purpose for land grabbing and all with Dayak YBs vocal support.
Conclusion
I am so happy to see that the government appeal failed at the high court in their case against 15 members of Tr. Nor of Sekabai, Ulu Sebauh, Bintulu for occupying state land. In Bintulu Miri Road also, another company failed in their effort to effect an injunction on Dayak community who insist on collecting the palm oil fruit from the trees that was planted by the plantation owner on their land. They took this action of collecting the fruit because the company keep on saying that they are “not making money” after 6 years of harvesting.
Interestingly enough, their first harvest on the oil palm tree planted on their land was $75,000 for first harvest in the first month and $45,000.00 for the second harvest of the same month. Maybe the TR from Kanowit should do the same, STOP the company from harvesting and harvest the fruit themselves.

Sarawakian YB doing thier own business and not helping the rakyat to eradicate the poverty. Next time, vote for independent.
Before Hari Raya Puasa, our DPM also Finance Minister announced Felda settlers were given RM41 million.
Two days ago, the same minister announced another RM441 million fo Felda settlers. My maths is not so good, but if I add the first to the second figure, it looks close to HALF Billion Ringgit- felda settlers on government land – those figures omitted the millions that have been given out over the past 20 years.
Over to you Rural Development Minister and Deputy CM.
Kaban,
Tell our ppl out there that we were marginalized by current government administration.
In any country, if you support each party to rule and make them more than 2/3 majority, this is the problem. In history, dominancy will also cause the leader and his minister open more to crime and without control. It is a fact. Its happen locally and also in the other part of the world.
Next, 2/3 majority in federal gov’t of M’sia has been denied. So, when for Sarawak? We need to balance up their power so that they are performing better and helps the rakyat who pays income tax to support the government’s staff salary.
In Sarawak, Dayaks/or NCR land owner not consider as settler, why? Where is Jabu and his allies? DO they perform their job? So, if you cannot remove Jabu and Taib in next election, remove the weaker ones. By doing so, you will automatically remove both of the culprit.

“SALCRA – Such A Low, Crappy Returns Annually!”
Morning, morning my fellow Dayaks. You read it right there: SALCRA-Such A Low, Crappy Returns Annually! Rightly noted by Dr.John, the return on this fantasy plantation scheme is close to nothing per acre NCR lands by Dayak landowners. Many other sites calculated a low returns as well despite the almost-artifically high price of CPO. Where the rest of the profits gone? Now with current CPO price plummeted down to sub RM1K-RM2 per tonne, how low the returns per acre could be? Unsolved mystery yet again.
Any form of investments, be it financial, properties, plantations, even in your education or collectibles such as fine arts, antiques, be it speculative or long term in nature all require risk and return feasibility aspects. You take account into the effect of inflation, how erosive or appreciative it is to your future returns. The difference of an investment and plain gambling is that investment based on calculated risk while gambling is pure waste against odds.
For most people, particularly us Bumiputera Dayaks, the traditional investment still largely on saving accounts for interest and investing in unit trusts. That is way much better than RM1/acre NCR lands received on plantation schemes. Even if you did sell your land and keep the money in the bank or you rent out your land to some businessmen, your passive income is not bad at all. The state govt, thru Salcra, owe us Dayaks some serious and big explaination on what the hell are all these plantation schemes is all about. If govt wish to eradicate poverty among Dayaks, fine but many things still kept in the dark:
- How comprehensive the details being offered and explained to Dayak landowners prior to the plantation commencement?
- On behalf of the Dayak landowners, who represent them on legality and techinicality issues: the Penghulu? a law firm?
- To safeguard both Salcra and Dayak landowners interest, is it supposed to be one-sided affair where Salcra seems to be on the upperhand while Dayak landowners being not duly informed to engage on group basis to engage one law firm to represent them?
- Why so secretive on profit sharings calculation per acre, so at least the Dayak landowners can evaluate to engage Salcra or other private developers?
- On what percentage of returns deemed considerable enough to eradicate poverty?
- Any legal avenue where Dayak landowners wish to know how much the plantation schemes overall profits?
- Of all plantation schemes in Sarawak, how Salcra fare to other govt-backed agencies or private plantations in terms of returns per acrea to relate their efficiency and management effetiveness?
- In all fairness, who are Salcra suppliers on major plantation inputs such as fertilisers, machineries, transportation, CPO containers, their related stakeholders? Any conflict of interest involving direct authorities?
- How informative is Salcra annual reports, not only profit and loss reporting but also their future planning, if there any excess cash how they gonna reinvest it to maximise further Dayak landowners profit?
- Salcra, with predominantly-Dayak staffs can only give highest priority to Dayak landowners and not the opposite which is a truth now, why?
All of these are just some of the variables for Dayaks to consider before participating in any plantation schemes. As the landowners, the Dayaks have the right to demand what is the best investment on their land and looking at the acreage rate, it’s no better than left it idle. It is as good for Dayaks voting for just voting opposition given that govt barely means nothing other than cheating for them. A case of the lesser of two evils.
Remember, palm oil is donkey’s favourite kuih jala.
I cannot avoid looking at that Temenggong 19 hectares of land from investment view-point. Let’s look at some simple calculations.
1. How much did SALCRA value Mr. Temenggong’s land 10 years ago? We put a conservative RM5,000 per acre. So 19 hectares x 2.47 acres = 46.93 acres. Total value RM234,650. Instead of SALCRA, Mr. Temenggong took the money and placed it under ASB with 12.5% returns each year.
Today the value would be RM761,983. (CMPD, PV=234,650, i=12.5%, n=10, FV=?)
2. How much would Mr. Temenggong get if he retains that amount inside ASB for another 10 years? Just change the PV to RM761,983, other variables retain. How much? My calculator says its RM2,474,403.
This is not a hypothetical calculation because avenues (1) ASB, (2) land (3) Returns (4) time are available. In fact my calculation is also wrong because ASB compound your money on monthly basis (RM2.8 million). Now who says Dayak’s poverty is not by design?
P/s: Beri pala/titles asoh semua tanah Dayak, nya baru betul.
Why is this lousy fate happening to the Dayaks? It is simply because that is exactly what we want. When non-BN activists complained about immoral ammendments to land code, these Dayaks rallied behind Jabu the Irrelevant to condemn the activists. Worst still in every election THE CULPRITS are always returned to power.
Want to change that ? ….. vote non-BN candidates
USoB, 100% agree with you. Next election coming soon. Lets campaign from now.
Unggla Seliong
Is it possible to use the land tittle to invest in ASB or equivalent without selling it so that the cash money is not withdrawn?
I don’t really know what is Permodalan Dayak is doing. ANybody can update on this?
Are there any more formal facts which are more general than this one particular example?
Is it true the figure is so small that the announcement is not splashed all over the media like the Felda’s one? DPM is probably banking on this as one of his achievements to get the presidency.
“If the meeting on 22 April 2008 between SALCRA and SADIA and the other NGOs was allowed to proceed, SALCRA officials would have a golden opportunity to showcase the success of the authority in term of development of land under Native Customary Rights.”
