Dayak – we must work on common values

Written by Lakkia

Introduction

gkm2020, you wrote a very good article on the way forward for the Dayaks. An article that spells the values system that could influence the way of life for the Dayaks, if we Dayaks internalise these values. Kudos gkm2020 for the beautiful insight into way forward for our community.

Common Values can drive us forward

Personally, I feel proud to know that we Dayaks start to hold on to some common values that will drive us forward. A common value system that do not differentiate our different sub-ethnic groups. A common value system that unites all of us because we all could share common goals. Read more

DAYAK: help more – judge less.

Today’s question: The best way to cheer yourself up is to cheer everybody else up too…

First all this write -up is nothing about politicking, it’s about human behaviors.

After any crisis – like the economic crisis we now experiencing – there is a lot of finger-pointing. Any tips on how to help my team avoid finger-pointing when we face a crisis?

You are making a great point…. I have seen massive amounts of finger pointing in some of this virtual forum, TV and others.

Concerning our economic and other crisis – I have seen “experts” or “technocrats” blame or booing the Prime Minister, the Deputy Minister, the Ministers, Members of the Parliament and/or the States Assembly Members, the Oppositions, the Police or Army, the Judges, the Bloggers, the NGOs, the free enterprise system, bankers, consumers, economists, regulators, deregulators, “rich people”, “celebrities” and even other competing ‘experts” like “cooks”, “bartender”, etc…

Pointing fingers?

Do we wish war, hunger, bleeds and chaos? Do we want peace, harmony and political/economic stability? Strangely enough, I have seen very few people pointing the finger of responsibility at themselves! Why? Read more

Dayak must learn not to betray one another

Written by Dr. John Brian Anthony

This thought come to my mind when i reflect on some of the root cause of Dayak inability to put right what is wrong currently. We have a big force that clashed against each other – it resides in our value system and practices. Betrayal is just one of such substantial factor to address if we are to move forward. We need to understand betrayal as a practice in order to find a good solution to the Dayak slow progress within the Malaysian community.

What is betrayal?

The Oxford Dictionary says: be disloyal to, assist the enemy, give up person etc to the enemy, BETRAYAL: hand over.

According to the Wikipedia Betrayal:

“is a form of deception or dismissal of prior presumptions, is the breaking or violation of trust, or confidence that produces moral and psychological conflict within a relationship amongst individuals, between organizations or between individuals and organizations. Read more

“The Bottom Line: People are important – No matter their stratum”

Companies that has no heart for the common people

In The Fundamental Religion of the Bottom Line, I asked whether the relentless pressure to drive growth and efficiency could drive humanity from the workplace. I was worried that the absolute focus on the financial bottom line was too brutal, an approach that would turn business into an emotional wasteland.

Companies would become places of darkness, humiliation and intimidation, Nothing Personal – Just Business, workers, could become “collateral damage – resources to be used, exploited and discarded.

A solution for the Dayaks?

Written by Seliong anak Wau

Adit joined PKR -why?

The almost 6,000 Iban supporters following YB Gabriel Adit to PKR made it to the national news. The figure may yet be verified but in the report of his speech, Adit, a four-term assemblyperson, told the crowd that the main reason for joining PKR was due to the “political castration” of the Dayaks under the BN state government. We castrate animals in real life. The purpose is to stop reproductive function in male animals. How do we “politically castrate” people?

Are Dayaks “politically castrated” people

Is Adit’s statement representative of the majority of Dayaks’ sentiments? Do the Dayaks feel they are being castrated in some ways?

Adit’s view may lack consensus; that is very obvious. If Adit represents the dissatisfaction of the Dayaks, there are Dayaks from the side of the political divide. If Adit’s supporters are passionate about Dayak’s rights as well as alienation, there are Dayaks who feel the present administration had been fair and generous to the Dayaks. But Adit’s statement is a step further: political castration. Read more

Social Business Responsibility Our 21st Century Manifesto

Written by gkm2020

Updated on 22 Nov 2008

Let Social Business Responsibility be one of our Dayak Baru Manifesto in the 21st Century

Why Social Business Is Capitalism’s Missing Link. Muhammad Yunus, is a Bangladeshi economist who founded Grameen Bank, helped launch the micro-credit revolution, and was a co-winner of the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize.

The Benefits of Micro-Credit

Now a growing force around the world, micro-credit provides poor people with access to one of the most basic human needs: Capital and/or Seed Money. By making small, unsecured loans of twenty, fifty, or a hundred dollars, Grameen Bank and similar institutions make it possible for a woman with nothing to start or expand a simple business – raising chickens, weaving baskets, husking rice. For tens of millions of families, this modest act has provided a permanent path out of poverty.

More people want Taib to resign

Written by Jetty

Nowadays more and more Sarawakians are getting bolder and bolder in demanding for Abdul Taib Mahmud’s resignation as chief minister of Sarawak. Some time ago it was DAP Ting Tze Hui (Member of Parliament for Meradong).

Recently it was Beginda Minda, publicity chief of Baleh branch of Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) who asked Taib to resign. For those remarks Beginda was forced to resign from the party. Now the MP for Bandar Kuching, Chong Chieng Jen has joined the chorus.

In an interview with Malaysiakini, Chong not only asked Taib to resign, but also accused Taib’s family of accumulating “astronomical wealth” through State contracts such as RM300 million for the construction of the new State Assembly building. Many road and building projects have been awarded to CMS and Naim Cendera, both of the companies are owned by Taib’s family members and relatives. Read more

Test Report For Disease Diagnosis: Sakai Mentality.

Never thought that such a disease could be so serious and rampant. It is easy to understand why Dr. Dyaks is very concern about the disease and the publication of his patient’s report testify to the risk Dyaks takes in order to highlight this common disease but seldom properly detected.

The report is good reading and we should all try to keep ourselves healthy and stay away from bad food and bad environment so that we will not be infected by this disease. Remember it is not new, dayakbaru should be aware of this disease, even though it is hard to cure, it is still curable in proper treatment is given at early stage. (Dr. John Brian Anthony).

Dayak YB supported systematic alienation of Dayaks Land

Written by Seliong ak Wau

The dissatisfaction over NCR is that the very guardian of Dayak rights has provided legislative support for systematic alienation of Dayaks in their own land.

This list provided by Dr John Brian is the beginning, but it leaves clear indication on its future direction:

  1. Rumah Nyawin di tebang
  2. Rumah Umai Kenyah / Kayan Belaga bisi udah di tebang. KTS di beri perintah 90 ribu hectare for tree replanting. Sida diatu mina nanam 1,000 acre – is 90 ribu an asset to KTS or liability?
  3. Kati gaya temuda rimba bala ke dalam tanah nya deh ?
  4. Rh late Dato Seri Penghulu Abok,sg. Sera di Sebauh – NCR /Teuda di beri perintah ngagai Bornoe Paper Pulp
  5. Rh Nading / Rh Unjan – brick long house taken down.
  6. Kebun kami empu di Sengga – beri ngagai meyadi Taib.

Fact one
There are more Dayak ADUN in the state assembly that any other races. The Dayaks, all share the same traits of being part of their lands. We lived off the land; the un-cloned rubber trees of today and the wild fruits trees of yesteryears. This sentiment over land and land-issues is therefore, not an introduction to the Dayak lawmakers. We don’t expect NCR 101 course for Dayak ADUNs because we share the same roots, passion and sentiments when it comes to land matters. We expect them to empathise; something we don’t see as extra-ordinary. Read more

Let us start this ‘revolution’, shall we, Dayak?

This article is highlighted for many reasons, foremost among them is it reflects the deep divide between Dayak to this very day. I will not say the issues are trivial as it is being highlighted with passion. Instead of running away from perception, we will be better by facing the problem head on. My advise to all as you read / react to this comment, not to look at the difference but look at the similarities of objectives that we would like to achieve as Dayak, together. If we can manage trivialities then we can surely move towards solving the bigger and greater problem. It is a challenge to us all to keep an objective outlook and not dwell in trivialities.

I have subtitled the story  told by Knight to help readers to focus on the spirit and intent of the message.

Do we need a Dayak political revolution – Do we want a Dayak political revolution – Do we know how to do it? ( Dr. John Brian Anthony)

Let us start this ‘revolution’, shall we, Dayak? Dr John Brian, take note of your character in this tale. Read more

The Government will not allow any motion from the Opposition

Written by Ari Ujan Belama (AUB)

This is AUB response to another article that reported “DUN motion on land issue- terminated by Speaker”

“This article is outstanding in that it helps us understand the how DUN works from the eyes of AUB. The implication of AUB confirmation that Dayak NCR land are recognized by government means Dayak with land that are being infringed on by Provisional lease should take matters to court immediately. Also, AUB argued that people who are successful do not need a government. How true is this statement? (Dr. John Brian Anthony)

Dayak NCR Land

Well the Dayak only have NCR land and it is being recognised by the State government and also by the Federal Court. If you don’t believe look at the case of Nyawai and other Vs Borneo Pulp and papers and the givernment of Sarawak. Read more

Create Awareness for Dayak Agenda

Written by Seliong ak Wau

Introduction

Awareness and effort to progress the Dayak Agenda is the cohesive efforts by all of us. We have to jointly contribute; making field visits, speeches, all form of writing, dispensing of resources etc. This task, as we have seen, is made more difficult as we face stiff resistance from our own Dayak Leaders.

First – we create the awareness for the Dayak Agenda

On one hand we try to consolidate our agenda and keep our focus on the agenda. Read more

Dayak Baru – Creative Community The Way Forward Into The 21st Century

Written by gkm2020

This article is not about “MOTIVATION” – it is about RULES. How can we live as a progressive and effective person and how it can affect and prosper our community. Measure yourself up with the rules and check to see whether you are doing what the rules say. If what you are doing is the same as what the rule say then you should be successful. Then the Dayak community should be successful irrespective of what our leadership do. Then the strength will reside in us, in our community. Dayakbaru readers- take this challenge, we can make a difference in ourself and our Dayak community in the 21st Century. – Dr. John Brian Anthony

Introduction

In today’s world be it in politic, business, research or any operational functions, the difference between success and failure is not whether you have a good business process, you can cut costs or sale better than anyone else or even that you are first in the market.

Today, the real, long-term competitive edge is the ability to have great and big ideas. Not merely that, it is the ability to keep having them as the competition innovates to respond to your moves.

But how do you get ideas? And, more importantly, how do you keep getting ideas and maintain the momentums? Here are few points or tips to help our community become creative or innovative people and/or idea-generating machines. Read more
