Dayak: Modernity & Equality – Bleak Future

Written by: gkm2020

Lets us study this scenario.

Quotes: Taib versus Tajem

    1. “SCORE to help equitable wealth distribution: Taib as quoted from The Borneo Post dated on Thursday, 25th December 2008.”In short, in planning the development programmes, no race will be left out. At the same time, the negative feelings factors that have held us back as our colonial heritage, the inequitable economic achievement of our people and any negative feelings between them, will be removed. Therefore, all races will enjoy the fruits of our progress fairly, “said Taib, who is also the Planning, and Resource Management Minister as well as the Sarawak Barisan Nasional chairman.

    2. Tajem said that the State government had introduced a bill to change “Sea Dayak” to “Iban”, the “Land Dayak” to “Bidayuh” and “Murut” to “Lun Bawang”, 31st January 2009. The governor has not signed the bill into law, but once it becomes law it means that “Iban”, “Bidayuh” and “Lun Bawang” are no longer natives and will not enjoy the rights and privileges as embodied under Article 153 of the Federal Constitution.

    Ethnicity

Ethnicity in its simplest and purest, or rather its most innocent form is a mere group identity which all of us as human beings share. As human beings we would like to live in communities or to understand ourselves as members of communities. The problem is that ethnicity does not stop at being simple or innocent. It is a politicized category. Politicized ethnicity provides a basis for political action and self-understanding. Specific and conflicting worldviews or forms of self-understanding based on ethnicity can generate social or political conflicts. That is where the real problem lies. When ethnicity or nationalism as a specific forms of worldview becomes a means to political mobilization… Read more

    Disciplining a child

Written by Dr. John Brian Anthony

Disciplining your child is tough but if you are consistent with it you will see results; I have some suggestions for parents to follow.

Rules for children cannot be changed from day to day

A serious parent in our culture today has a hard road to follow in raising our children to be disciplined, loving, compassionate people. Many children have lost any semblance of submission to authority.

You must be consistent and must train your child to obey through diligent and careful discipline and precise instruction. The rules cannot be changed from day to day. They have to be the same each and every day. Read more

    Discipline and tone of voice

Written by Dr. John Brian Anthony

Parents must take control of their children

When you tell your child to clean her room, is she arguing, whining, or protesting? You have to change this: she has to understand that when you speak to her that you mean for her to follow your instructions.

This can be accomplished by taking control of your life and changing the way you are handling the situation. Sometimes people will look at a child who is giving problems at school and then take a look at the parents and say something to the effect that well what else would you expect from those parents, you don’t want to be one of those parents they speak about at all! Philosophy regarding guidance and discipline for young children

Written by Dr. John Brian Anthony

The philosophy of disciplining and guiding children is to teach and to have the child learn to live in accordance with reasonable rules.

What does it means to discipline young children?

    To discipline means to teach.

To be well disciplined is to have learned to live in accordance with the reasonable rules and regulations society has set up for the behavior of its members. Unless the child learns from each disciplinary situation how better to govern his conduct, effective discipline has not been developed.

    Discipline results in learning

Parents must accept for themselves the idea that successful discipline results in learning. When they approach situations in which a child must adapt themselves to demands made upon them as learning situations, many problems usually thought of in connection with discipline disappear. Read more

Pre-Warning: Bubble Burst On The Way?

    Written by gkm2020

This morning, reports came in from CNBC, Bloomberg and other media, pointing worsening economic conditions despite the bailouts!

Notes: Malaysia still OK? Won’t be affected? Beware of the liars! We’re facing uncertainty now!

Obama’s New Stimulus Plan May Be the Needle That Pops the Treasury-Bond Bubble

Frighteningly, like the rush into tech stocks, then the rush into real estate, and then the rush into commodities, the rush into U.S. government bonds has created a Treasury bubble. In a cruel twist of economic fate, passage of an aggressive Obama administration stimulus plan could further inflate that bubble – before popping it.

The United States of America is an expensive household to run. In order to pay the nation’s bills, the U.S. government levies taxes. When expenditures exceed tax revenue, the government has to borrow money. The United States borrows money by ordering the Treasury Department to sell government IOUs to investors in the form of Treasury bills, notes and bonds, known as “Treasuries.” Read more

Semi-skilled foreign workers to work in SCORE?

Written by Dr. John Brian Anthony

The below news is exactly what I have expected and this is totally unacceptable by the people of Sarawak. Dayakbaru will take the lead to protest this move. SCORE is said to be created to generate 1.5 million job. Before we even begin, the Chief Minister already started to play his manipulative hand on labour requirement.

You can expect the Chief Minister’s next step – he will announce that Sarawak will import semi-skill labour from a specific country. Before that, a certain arrangement would be made to put labour supply business under a limited monopoly.

    What is Happening?

    KUCHING:

“Sarawak will relax its immigration policy to open up the state in a controlled way to allow semi-skilled immigrant workers to be employed in the various sectors in preparation for the implementation of the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE).” (Borneo Post)

    Internal Labour supply

What is the number of labour that is needed and what classification / category of skill are required?

The Sarawak government led by the Chief Minister is always issuing very “blur and sweeping “statement that is almost of no use to the people of Sarawak. Can the Labour Department or SCORE issue a specific information on the labour requirement.

Otherwise I can only thing of dubious intention of certain politician to make money out of labour supply at the expense of Sarawak workers. Read more

With BAKUN, do we still need 12 Dams

Written by Dr. John Brian Anthony

Finally, my earlier question of why did Sarawak “sell out” Bakun to West Malaysia is finally going to be answered. It is going to be expensive for Sarawak to pay for the control of BAKUN even though the Ministry of Finance held the biggest share.

    It is expensive to Sarawak

Not only in monetary term which could be addressed by Return on Investment (ROI) through sales of electricity, but Sarawak sacrifice the people of BELAGA for the project. The people of Belaga have to move out of their centuries old homes, history, familiarity, land, culture and begin a new life that is lacking in everything they have experience before.

The cultural shocked is felt by Belaga people up till today. What did Belaga people get out of Bakun – development that was created to feed the industrialized sector of West Malaysia. Now those sacrifice is at least understandable as Sarawak Energy is involved in a much more substantial way through equity. and control of operation.

Hopefully, Sarawak Energy would provide “special treatment” to the people of Belaga who are affected by the project.

While in Belaga town last year, the town folks commented that “large fishes” has disappeared and now they only buy smaller fishes for their dining table. The Bakun dam has affected the quantity and quality of the food down stream. Read more

What actually happened to Sarawak Forest?

Written by Dr. John Brian Anthony

Timber business is always associated with quick money. Thus, Forest Timber license is the “trophy” for politician in cohort with businessman.

Timber business is also associated with corruption in a very BIG WAY. The many facets of timber business attracts corruption – people looking for fast money. Unfortunately, timber business also bring much damage to the environment and many negative social impact in Sarawak rural population.

Still, in many parts of rural Sarawak where timber was extensively extracted, no development of any kind were implemented in the area. Truly, the State government has mismanaged the money got from our forest timber and divert it to we do not know where. Read more

    Dayak: Going Forward Objectively

    Written by: gkm2020

    Going Forward

To go forward, Dayak Community empowerment must go well beyond political or legal permission to participate in the national political system. It includes capacity to do things that community members want to do. The dimension would include “Up-Down”, “Down-Up” and “External Surrounding” approaches. You are either going forward or you are not.

To achieve our mission, we must analyze all theoretical factors such as Strengths; Weaknesses; Opportunities; and Threats (SWOT) and Political; Economic; Social; Technological; Legal; and Environmental (PESTLE) including Gender Training Community of Practice (GTCP) and Code of Practice (CP). Dayak Communities must find and build elements of strength and superiority to win, progress and prosper.

    Unity of Command

One of the most important principles of war i.e. to fight and win the battle is the Unity of Command. If there’s lack of quality and/or capable leaders, low morale, disunity, disoriented, untrained and unequipped (skill includes tactic, technique, intelligence and technology), the battle would be lost! To win the battle, to progress and moving forward objectively, Dayak Communities must and/or needs to build, re-engineer, re-invent, explore new ideas, re-modernize, re-mobilize and be trained with at least sixteen (16) elements of capacity, strength and/or empowerment.  Read more

    Stop Racialism Supremacy

    Written by gkm2020

    What is Racism?

Definition: The American Heritage Dictionary lists two definitions of the word “racism”:

    1.       The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others.

    2.       Discrimination or prejudice based on race.

There is great confusion and argument over the terms “racism” and “racist” – some groups are classified as “racist” while others are considered “incapable of racism due to power difference.”

The first definition can be evidenced when we consider the views of White Supremacists and Jim Crow Laws (which legislated the belief that Whites were entitled to more civil rights than others). The underlying assumption is that one race – the white race – is superior to all others. Laws based on this belief (e.g. Apartheid in South Africa) reflect racism. People who ascribe to this belief are then, racist. Read more

    Dayak will change BN government

Written by Dr. John Brian Anthony

This posting is taken from a response to dayakbaru article of Dayak – Mission to Change. I find Iskander response to be very educational and informative . More so, it is very sincere.

Dayak can learn one or two things from Iskander thinking and should be positive enough to accept his observation and suggestion. If Dayak react negatively then we will find it more difficult to improve ourselves as a community.

Dayakbaru realized that we have mountains to climb in order to come anywhere close to where we want to be. We have to work hard to get Malay support. Don’t forget – the Malays work doubly hard to get dayak support to put Taib as the Chief Minister. Jabu role in PBB or for that matter Dayak role in PBB is very important to Malay to ensure their continuity of leadership.

Do Dayak really want to make this change using PKR platform – because it is not easily deregister by Sarawak BN government or do Dayak really cannot see the BIG picture as pointed out by Iskander.

    Sarawak Government Poverty Eradication Program

Written by Dr. John Brian Anthony

The amount of money allocated for poverty eradication program in Sarawak is quite substantial. I cannot understand why we are not able to see this happening. is it because the BN government is so humble and the government department are very hard working that they do not have time to share with us their effort.

Under Tan Sri Jabu – Rural Development Ministry – it is possible for ordinary people like us to know the Ministry plan to uplift Rural Poverty? I hope the answer is not by increasing allocation for minor rural project to provide building material etc.

Below is a summary of article I read in the BORNEO POST 23rd January 2009 issue. This article share the good effort of BN government to help the Melanau to come out of poverty. If such a programme could be extended to selected dayak areas – if this has been done, can anybody share the information please.

The Dayak YBs could plan and ask for such programme from the Chief Minister. In Kemena, I have not heard of such initiative. Does that mean that there is no poverty in Kemena – kapit, Kanowit, Belaga, Marudi etc? Read more

    Sarawak Unity Through Culture

Written by Dr. John Brian Anthony

Many people recognized that culture can bring unity in a community or in this case: unity through culture for Sarawak.

I cannot help but reflect back on the Kalimantan Tengah Dayak visit to Sarawak late 2008 and they brought along with them a cultural troupe. They showcase the Kalteng Dayak culture in Dewan Suarah Kuching. It was not only an eye opener for many who come to see the show that day but give us a new learning on the need to develop our cultural presentation.

The SDNU is now talking about the setting up of Dayak Cultural Development Centre in the near future. Read more
