Dayak: Business Thinking Must Change

Written by: gkm2020

It’s Time to Get out Of the BOX!

Not just for DCCI but for any Dayak business community. It is never too late to be what you might have been or where you have been. I have found that truly successful people surround themselves with the support that makes them excel. Over years of working and even partnership with clients, I have found that people struggle when they put their businesses and their lives in a self-imposed limiting box and keep doing the same things over and over again.

So what I/we could do here?

Lets think, discuss and help people dismantle that box: the attitudes; ideas; beliefs; choices; and strategies that keep them limited. I/we should guide and teach them how to connect to the full range of their talents, abilities and resources so that they can bring that immensity and excitement back into their daily planning and choices.

Define which BOX you are in now?

I define a “limiting box” as any idea of yourself or the world, any attitude, any language you use, any belief or any experience that diminishes you in anyway or robs you of your personal power and prevents you from moving forward in the world. Living in these boxes keeps us within what we already know we repeat the same habitual actions hoping for a better result and end up disillusioned and feeling stuck.

Learn and master the unknown

We always feel comfortable zone and do not which to invent or build another box. In order to live the best life possible for yourself, you have to master the skill of moving into the unknown. The unknown is really anything outside of the box that we have created from past experiences, beliefs and ideas. It is where fresh opportunity, excitement and more satisfaction reside.

BOX being folded from opportunity

Over and over again in working with new clients and/or business communities, we uncover the ways in which they are creating difficulty for themselves by not even seeing the opportunities that are right in front of them just slightly outside of their box. Often, they feel frustrated in their efforts and even give up on doing what they love most. In doing this they turn away from what could bring their greatest reward.

Here are some symptoms of living in the box:

  • Frustration
  • Anger, lack of energy or motivation
  • Feeling stuck
  • Resentment
  • Lack of creativity and innovation
  • Disorganization
  • Lack of awareness
  • Nerd mentality
  • Self-interest
  • Phobia from being overrun by others and competition
  • Cynicism
  • Not doing what you love and needs
  • Boredom
  • A sense of failure
  • Despair

There are many boxes that people create for themselves. Here are a few of them:

1. The box of language and I’m not or you’re not good enough box. Language is a powerful tool. How we use it both describes and begins to structure our experience for us. Every time you use language that diminishes you or others, “That was stupid of me”, “I’m never going to make this work”, “life it just too hard”…etc, etc. we strengthen the walls of the box we are in.

2. The box of familiar actions and I’m safe if I don’t try anything-new box. Our actions can either open new doorways for us or keep us in the same groove we are familiar with. Someone described his experience of this lately. He said that it is like going down a dead-end street and then having to turn around and come back again over and over again wasting a whole lot of energy and time in the process. After doing this a number of times people often give up. Seeing and acting outside of the box can allow you a different perspective from which to connect the dots.

3. The box of blame and I have no power box. Many people insist on blaming their circumstances, the financial markets, their spouse, dog or anyone else for the situation they are in. Until you can recognize and identify the ways you are perpetuating this box and take responsibility it is very difficult to make real progress. Granted externals have an impact but recognizing how you create a box out of circumstances allows you the power and energy to begin moving out of it.

4. The box of negative expectation and I know that the same thing is going to happen box. When faced with something you don’t know notice if you expect either something negative to happen or expect that what you have experienced before will repeat itself. Many people use this as a way to move away from their fear of change and keep the status quo in place. They would rather stay with the known pain than risk something new. The unknown I am talking about has all the possibility in it if we project our negative or limiting expectations on it there is no room for anything new. Imagine what would happen if this box didn’t hold you!

What are your favorite boxes?

What might happen in your personal or professional life if you were guided out of those boxes? Often it is hard for us to do it alone. Sometimes we can’t even identify where we are stuck without a fresh set of very interested eyes. Coaching can offer you that new vantage point that broader view and the support and tools needed to move outside your BOX. Build more boxes and shine your “lego deluxe boxes”.

Conclusion

1. In any business venture ones need to be creativity, innovative and proactive. By sitting duck would not help such person and/or any organization to progress and become productive. Business is not “bubu ikan”, you have to find the “ikan” and their possibilities.

2. We’re all generalists, so think of this as a grazing buffet for omnivores. Equally important, “Idea” is a conversation. IDEA (Identify, Define, Evaluate and Apply). The greater the hall, the more nearly will the theatre assume its perfect form. Get out of the primitive thinking! Boost up your thinking power.

3. Stop being a “coddled member of the silver spoon generation”. While personal success comes easy to those born with a proverbial silver spoon in their mouths, financial freedom is achievable to anyone who is willing to work hard enough to obtain it.

4. Business is about Capitalism, Company, Colonization, Competition, Conglomerate, Corporate, Collaboration, Cooperation, Consortium and Consolidation: BC10.

5. Time to wake up, get up, grow up, get out and build your own wealth. Build Wealth Policy!

6. Stop blaming others or no one but yourself because everything starts from your inner self. No one can help you if you don’t help yourselves.

7. Business is not about “ka begaya” or “happy hours”, it’s about working real hard and making profits for your organization, your stakeholders, your employee and your family and it isn’t easy either. Wrong step you are doomed with financial problem. Never take business lightly. Business is about profit and/or money venture and you need to explore and find that business initiative at all times. Business does not sleep and it always stays awake (24 hours and 365 days). You sleep or slip, you will fail.

8. Engaging in Business is not enough and neither as commission earner. You need to run, own and operate it if you want to become a successful entrepreneur. You also need to understand the law of business and every details of it.

9. Investment is about “money spinner” to multiply further and it’s about principal and/or capital guarantee.

10. There are two types of CEO; the first one is a Chief Executive Officer and the other is a Chief Entertainment Officer. Pick the right one, you will prosper and success.

Dayak will never be at par with others if they are still in that BOX = Blind Off Existence! You need to exist and be visible. BOX also means “Bangsa Orang X-maju”. Change that primitive BOX thinking habit and Build On Evolution!

Don’t piggy back on BN because it’s a political platform. Don’t mixed up politic and business together for you are going to corrupt yourselves further. It’s totally a different profession from the other. I’m neither against BN nor any political platform but when we talk of business (bus-in-ess), it’s about getting busy, innovateand success!!

My Professor used to tell me to take the decipline
I am good at. Meaning I should be able identify my own gifted talent. My contention, correct me if I am wrong, is the Dayaks lack business acumen. It would appear that the Dayaks gifted talent is on politic. Who dare to dispute? ….. there are countless and plenty of successful Dayaks politicians out there as opposed to businessmen. So perhaps there nothing wrong for the community to just focus on politic and NOT business.

Brooke..are Dayaks gifted in politics and hence able to make sound polical decisions that benefit its community or are they gifted in just politicking and seeking small and shameful monetary gains for themselves at the expense of their constituents??

Dear Mr.Brooke. I am not happy with what you have written above.

You are still in the box. Please get out of the box.

Do you beleieve that the Chinese is extremely good at business?

Pay attention to history of the Chinese. In my point of view, the Chinese is better than us in business because they started it first.

How about cock fighting? Ibans remain on of the greatest because we started it first. Now he is nurturing his children to become successful businessmen.

The conclusion is the world of business does not belong to one particular race. It belongs to anyone who dares to take the challenges and learn about business.

Have a look at Datuk Amar Leonard Linggi. He has never stopped learning about business.

Ask ourselves first. Do a lof of self-reflection.

Please Mr. Brooke. Don’t ever look down at Dayaks. We can be global players if we dare to LEARN.
