ARE DAYAK REPS READY FOR CHANGE?
Written by gkm2020
Herein are my thoughts and opinions for DayakBaru: We Believe…..
Slogans and logos
One of the first things to establish is a campaign slogan. All successful politicians fight for something. Good things to fight for are Working Families, Our Children, or better yet Our Children’s Future. You can say just about anything while on the campaign trail provided you tie it to Our Children’s Future. If your opponent is already using a “fight” slogan, then you should consider “working” for something in yours. Realize that Working for Working Families sounds pretty awkward. Incorporate “fight” in your campaign before your opponent does. It should also include “Agi Idup, Agi Ngelaban” and “Maju Dayak, Maju Bangsa“.
In our campaigns, we must make use of Sarawak Colors of Freedom the red-yellow-and-black color scheme. Spear-shield-and-duku, and hornbill decor in campaign. signs, buttons, banners, and brochures is a nice extension of this principle. If your opponent grabs these colors before you do, you’ll be at a significant disadvantage.
Brochures, longhouse/community/town hall meetings, and sound-bites
Employ as many of the following clichés as possible. Try to use “We” in favor of “I” and “Our” instead of “My” or “Yang Dikasihi” or “I’m the Government”. People like us want to believe that we’re all in this together. Always talk about our children even if you don’t have any of your own.
This campaign will focus on the issues
We’ll build a victorious bridge to the 21st century; We’ll face the challenges of the new millennium; We’ll grow the economy and turn it around for the rakyat; We’re going to reform and change the government and their current policies; We’ll reach across party lines; We’re here to serve the Sarawakian people; We’ll fight for working families, rural communities and veterans; We’ll empower people; We’ll leave neither child nor single parent behind, no one; We must put children first and our children’s future is at stake; We have to look to the future, Change we must; We believe in Political Greatness, Economic Independence and Human Rights; Together, we’ll build our future; and Together, we can make Dayak and all the Sarawakian great.
When discussing polls: It’s still early; There’s still a long way to go in this race; I’ve never believed in polls; What matters is how people vote on Election Day; Polls don’t mean a thing; Polls are much ado about nothing; I looked at a poll earlier today and it showed a completely different result; The polls fail to show who has the momentum; People will vote with their conscience; and People will vote with their hearts.
Debates
If you are going to disagree with your opponent during a debate or counter their propaganda, be sure to preface your comments with “With all due respect” even if you have no intention of showing any semblance of respect in your rebuttal. You can deaden an impressive statement your opponent makes by starting your reply with: “The fact of the matter is…”. Represent and respect the Rakyat (voters) not the Government, because in every election it’s all about political parties bidding to takeover and administer the Government. Although his/their comments may be 100 percent accurate, this subtle remark conveys the impression that he doesn’t have his facts straight. A nice way to summarize a long, meaningless, rambling remark is with the words: “At the end of the day…”. This gives the half-asleep audience the impression that you see the “big picture” in a seemingly complex subject.
Clichés about Candidates
Here are the phrases to use when describing a candidate. She can be substituted for He where appropriate: He’s his own man; He’s a man of vision; He’s a visionary; He has a clear vision for our future; He’s a man of character; He’s a man of integrity; He’s a man of great moral fiber; He’s a candidate for the people; He’ll bring dignity to the office; He’s running a grassroots campaign; He cares about children and families; He’s demonstrated real leadership; He’ll make a difference in people’s lives; He’s good for the country; He knows what the country needs; He’s running on his record; He’s a voter advocate; He understands the voters; He connects with the voters; He’s willing to stand up to the State Government bureaucrats; He won’t back down to the special interest groups; The voters know what he stands for; The voters can identify with him; and His record on the issues is clear.
Here are some clichés to use during election recounts: Every vote is precious, sacred and must be counted; Each vote is like a human voice, bond and rights; We must determine the will of the people; The voice of the voters and the rakyat must be heard; The recount must be full, fair, transparence and accurate; Our democracy is at stake; If we ignore votes, we ignore democracy; We must do what’s in the best interest of the country and for Sarawak; We must have a full recount for the good of the country and for Sarawak; We must follow the Rules of Justice and Respect Human Rights; We don’t want a fast result, we want an accurate result; We can’t disenfranchise the voters or the rakyat; You can’t change the rules in the middle of the game or after the game; The votes have already been counted three times; This By-State election should not be decided in the courts, it must be decided by the people, for the people and of the people; and They’re trying to steal the election.
It is crucial for a successful politician to have a powerful stage presence. The majority of rakyat who watch political speeches and propaganda have little interest in what is being said. They are evaluating a speaker’s delivery style and mannerisms while paying scant attention to the content of the speech. The speech can and should be filled with clichés (listed below), interspersed with facts and figures that may or may not have some connection with reality. But the speaker must look convincing while delivering a speech, even in the rare case that something of significance is being said.
The Power Fist
A speaker should always have the hands in motion and make plentiful use of authoritative gestures. The most important hand position is the Power Fist. To attain this position, follow these simple steps: Raise one hand to about chest-level; Make a fist with the thumb on top; and Slightly uncurl the index finger so that the thumb rests in the notch of the middle joint of the index finger.
Our candidates should have the position demonstrated a good way to visualize the Power Fist is to imagine you are holding a small Sarawak flag. The key component of this gesture is having the thumb clearly protruding above the clenched fingers.
Our Candidates must be ready to make their statements with confidence and authority. The best way to use the Power Fist is to punch the air while simultaneously emphasizing individual words at the end of a sentence. Let’s say you are proposing some program and you want to promise that there’s something in it for everybody. End their last statement with “…FOR-EACH-AND-EVERY-DAYAK-AND-EVERY-SARAWAKIAN…” each word spoken in cadence with a deliberate punching move from the Power Fist. This will guarantee applause from your audience.
Pauses
Pauses add drama to boring speeches. If the candidates do not include pauses, they might as well sing their audience a bedtime lullaby – the effect will be the same. While pauses are always important, it is critical to interject them in any theme that involves Elders, Families, or Our Children, and Pensioners/Veterans. Here, one can bite the lower lip as if you are about to be overcome with the emotion of the moment. It’s very convincing.
Clichés for Speeches
A good political speech should use lots of clichés, the choice of which depends on whether you are an incumbent, a challenger, or just trying to impress your constituency.
Here’s a sampling: This country has a proud heritage; I’ve journeyed into the heartland of Sarawak; I’ve met with real Dayak grassroots and Sarawakians; We are the defenders of freedom in Sarawak and Malaysia; We’re the leaders of the free world; We’re the greatest Indigenous Peoples of Sarawak/Borneo; No dream is beyond our reach; We’re one people bound together by a common set of ideas; Let’s celebrate our diversity through unity; and We’ll find out how great a Dayak Nation we can be.
For Incumbents: This constituency N29 Batang Ai is for the rakyat and their rights to achieve economic independence; Our Sarawak and our country are as strong as it’s ever been; This Sarawak and our country have come a long way; This Sarawak and our country is headed in the right direction; We’re should be a better, stronger Sarawak than we were four five years ago; These are the most peaceful, prosperous times in our Dayak history; We still have a lot to do, we must Change now and to continuously going forward to achieve our Vision, Mission and Objectives; and The real credit goes to all Sarawakian people our “Rakyat” not only in N29 Batang Ai but for all citizen of Sarawak.
For Challengers
- Raykat deserved the rights to all humanitarian basic needs, accessibilities and economic equability in Sarawak regardless where they come from.
- Dayak deserved the rights to defend, protect and develop their own Native Customary Lands.
- Dayak deserved the rights to independently establish, build, administer, protect and operate their Native Court. This is officially and legally written in our Federal Constitutions when Sabah and Sarawak formed Malaysia. I also believe the natives of Sabah would do the same. That’s our native rights!
- Dayak deserved the rights to achieved economic equability and equally benefits as any “Bumiputra” status of Malaysia.
- Dayak deserved the rights to every education and benefits in the country.
- Dayak deserved the rights to maintain their colonial heritage and entity.
- Dayak deserved the rights to Rule of Justice and/or Rule of Law.
- Dayak deserved the rights to equally take the senior/superior post in both the Government public service and the private sectors.
- All Sarawakian deserved the rights to their 18 Points Agreement in joining Malaysia.
- Rakyat deserve some tax cut (personal, corporate and land) and other Government incentives (low interest rate, no more increase in food prices, low highway tolls, low fuel price, low import & export duties, and many others as deemed fit and necessary).
- It’s time to get tough on crime, let’s take back our streets from the criminals and we must win the war on drugs.
- We need affordable home and health care for all Sarawakian and for all Dayak communities.
- We need affordable prescription drugs for seniors, pensioners, veterans, single parents and the poor communities.
- Rakyat want to see accountability, transparency and uphold the Rules of Justice in the Government.
- Rakyat want to see the Police/Military and other Government enforcement agencies to be strong/productive/efficient, mutual work closely together with the rakyat and the NGOs to maintain Rules of Justice, Rules of Law and respect Human Rights, Land Rights & Indigenous Peoples Rights
- We have to break the gridlock in N29 Batang Ai and the State Government.
- We have to change the tone in State Government.
- Are you better off today than you were four five or five years ago?
- It’s time for a change, it’s time for a new beginning and it’s time for real leadership.
So what is government?
A good government is one “which shall restrain men from injuring one another, shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread that it has earned. Good government is that which delivers the citizen from the risk of being done out of his life and property too arbitrarily and violently – one that relieves him sufficiently from the barbaric business of guarding them to enable him to engage in gentler, more dignified and more agreeable undertakings…
Very simply, it is an agency of coercion. Of course, there are other agencies of coercion – such as promoting “Dirty Mafia Tactics”. So to be more precise, government is the agency of coercion that has flags in front of its offices to serve the rakyat. A government is not legitimate merely because it exists. Both of our political parties, at least the honest portion of them, agree conscientiously in the same object: the public good; but they differ essentially in what they deem the means of promoting that good. One side believes it best done by one composition of the governing powers, the other by a different one. One fears most the ignorance of the people; the other the selfishness of rulers independent of them. Which is right, time and experience will prove.
Freedom & Human Rights
Every citizen has the legitimate rights to choose their own Government, be it Pakatan Rakyat or Barisan Nasional. When we got organized as a country and we wrote a fairly radical Constitution with a radical Legitimate Human Rights, giving a radical amount of individual freedom to Malaysians… If you read the Constitution, it’s rooted in the desire to limit the ability of government’s ability to mess with you (as citizen), because that was a huge problem. It can still be a huge problem. But it assumed that people would basically be raised in coherent families, in coherent communities, and they would work for the common good, as well as for the individual welfare. Too many people are only willing to defend rights that are personally important to them. It’s selfish ignorance, and it’s exactly why totalitarian governments are able to get away with trampling on people. Freedom does not mean freedom just for the things; I think also means I should be able to do. Freedom is for all of us. If people will not speak up for other people’s rights, there will come a day when they will lose their own.
Conclusion
What’s happened in Malaysia and in Sarawak today is, too many people live in areas where there’s no family structure, no community structure, no work structure, and no basic humanitarian needs including too much destruction on the environment. And so there’s a lot of irresponsibility. Reform’ is a word you always aughta’ watch out for. ‘Reform’ is a change that you’re supposed to like. And watch it – As soon as you hear the word ‘Reform’, you [should] reach for your wallet and see who’s lifting it. Every citizens and country gets the right government it deserves. Don’t talk, decide carefully and do.
This N29 Batang Ai Sarawak By-Election is for the Rakyat and they deserved to all: their citizenship/human rights to live in harmony, prosperity and in peace; basic humanitarian needs (utilities, roads, ICT, shelters, food and clothing); basic education, high learning and scholarship; mutual and equal benefits serving in the public service; and to achieve economic independence.
Munyi ko Unggal Tuairumah Manchal “Aram Kitai Bekimpen Ngelaban BN (Perintah Lama)!” Aku tu ka mupuk dulu unggal/wai ngidup ka api ba N29 Batang Ai…din kitai betemu baru nampung randau kitai ngelama tu.. Maju Dayak, Maju Bangsa! Good Luck!

Tabi Kaban,
Yes we are in the pipeline of changes but be cautious and not as fast as the Kremlin, went for total change from communism to capitalist world. But what they didnt realised the top world capitalist like US, Britian and France are at the verge of collapse. May be the Iban George Soros, the remiser Mr Seloiong Wau can enlighten us on the capitalist recent collapse in the Wall Street.
Iban elite are at the changing course, but the menu of transforming the rural population is at the dim light. The elite are making their names bigger and longer. The nomenclature for Jap*boo, name given upon him at birth is growing longer eachday. Upon graduated from Adelate University in Australia, Ja**poo added (Bsc, Agri.) to his nomenclature. After he became succesful politician, another title given, the datuk. By now he is named as tan seri datuk patingi jaapoo. The nomenclature of names for the malaysian big shot, is serious business and lucrative too. A datu title from Mindao with price tag RM10k whereas in P. msia can cost as much 60k.
Another lucrative business is Phd paper from overseas university. The SGDA is having at least 4 Phd holders. In the past 10 years they only few namely Dr Kedit and Dr Ngenang. These 2 guys are science Phd holder where they performed the experiment before they proved their theories before being offered the degree. But the PJJ type which is mainly on the mangement is still the critic of the blogger on their credibity, because these course are at sale in the internet business. I believed most genuine Phd holder had at least published/present 3 international papers.
Are these changes to be Phd holder for the glamour or for the real course of dayak intelectual development. I hope one day we are not branded as the dayak are cheap scat phd holder.

DAYAKS – ARISE, UNITE AND CLAIM BACK YOUR LAND
In the early 90’s Taib came up with his so called visionary “Politics of Development“. In various gatherings and speeches, he told Sarawakians then that his new found idea would transform Sarawak into a model state in Malaysia.
Under this noble idea, land will be developed and people will reap huge benefits and would improve their economic and social being, so he claimed!
However, large tracts of land are owned by the Dayaks who have acquired them through native customary rights which is provided for under Sarawak Land Code 1958.
Taib saw that the land code as a stumbling block for his “Politics of Development“. So, he went on to change the provisions of the land code pertaining to Native Customary Land especially S5(2) not once but FOUR times. The manner in which he passed those amendments is akin to a boat owner fixing leaks in his boat!
The Amendments
In 1994 minister in charge of land matters was given the power to extinguish native customary rights to land.
In 1996, the onus was placed on a native claimant to prove that he has customary rights to the land
In 1998 mechanisms for assessment and payment of compensation were put in place in event of compulsory acquisition.
In 2000 the amendment deleted “any lawful methods” as set out in S5(2)(f).
In 2002 following Nor Nyawai case, Land Surveyors Ordinance 2002, was passed allowing only licensed surveyor to make, authorize or sign any cadastral map. It means only Land & Survey Department can come up with a map!
Following Nor Nyawai case, Taib passed another law relating to land matters – the Land Surveyors Ordinance 2002 which provides for only licensed surveyor to make, authorise or sign any cadastral map. It means only Land & Survey Department can come up with a map! So Dayaks can no longer prepare their own map of their own area by themselves or by a third party.
So by now, Taib has fixed all the leaks, and the Dayaks are in a fix!
The net effect of these amendments is to legalize the process of taking away native customary right land (NCL) and alienate them to politicians, cronies, relatives who in turn sell them to big time oil palm planters!
And so began the process of land grabbing by the State which is run by state Barisan National , led by party Pesaka Bumiputra Bersatu of which Taib is the president.
As the laws are being changed, the process of giving away licences and provisional leases to whosoever Taib desires, began in earnest. A number of licences and provisional leases have been issued by Taib to his family members, cronies and who later sell them to local and private oil palm planters.
The provisional leases holders armed with the lease waste not time and start working on the land indicated in the lease with little regard to the presence of people’s garden, farm house, farmed area, buildings/structures or even burial ground!. To them everything that stands on their new found land is theirs and can be removed or bulldozed at will. Past records have indeed proved that they could do it with impunity! They have the “papers” whereas the NCL owners have nothing to show other than the crops that they have planted for ages!
This is how some of the confrontations occurred between the new land owners the NCL owners who are 99% Dayaks. The number of cases that are pending court hearing is almost reaching 200. But some just gave up fighting against the might of Sarawak state government – a government who always claim that they care for the rakyat at least during election time!!
Where can the NCL owners turn to defend their rights?
Nobody, Nobody, Nobody !!!!
If they report the case to the Land & Survey Department they would be told that they are squatting on state (Taib’s) land.
If they go to the police no action will ever be taken. The report if ever written/recorded, will just gather dust!
If they go to their Dayak politicians they will be told invariably not to go against the government.
However if they take the law into their hands by blocking entrance to the disputed land, they will be charged for committing some form of criminal act! But the new land owners can engage “gangsters” to harass the NCL land owners. “The Niah Muder case”
This is the background to the famous Nor Nyawai case(Please watch the video at the end of this post) and many more land dispute cases between NCL owners and the government of Sarawak and/or big time oil palm planters. Fortunately the Nor Nyawai case, the lawyer Baru Bian had done Dayak community proud for bringing and arguing the case with wisdom and integrity. The judge Ian Chin earned the respect of the Dayaks for his wisdom and courage to interpret the laws as they are rather than interpreting the law to the tune of the politicians! The case has shed light to other judges and brought some relief to the Dayaks whose NCLs have been hanging on the balance for a long time.
For more information of the Rumah Nyawai case, please click here for an excellent article by Baru Bian, Advocate and Solicitor for the case.
Causes of the Problem
One of the main causes of the current Dayak situation is of course Taib Mahmud. He had no intention to develop or help the Dayaks! He also has little or no respect for them. The way he treated the Dayaks since he became Chief Minister in 1981 speaks volumes about how little regard he has for the Dayaks. He split the Dayaks many times over. He cleverly engineered the destruction of various Dayak based parties – SNAP & PBDS and the Dayal leaders. Today the so-called leaders of the forerunner of these 2 parties – SPDP & PRS are completely at his mercy. If the colonial power practised divide and rule policy, Taib perfected it in Sarawak at least amongst the Dayaks.
Recently he evenly despised the Dayak way of life where in his speech during Agro Fest Day in Nov, in Kuching he condemned the Dayak forefathers for creating NCR land through shifting cultivation. You see they (Dayaks) have 2million acres under NCR land just because of shifting cultivation” ! Summarized from The Broken Shield.
If that is not a mark of total disrespect for the Dayak community, I don’t know what else!
Secondly, most of the Dayak politicians do not have the courage to stand up against Taib. This is because their nominations before the elections have been endorsed by him. So they owe him a living!
And given the mentality of the Dayaks of “not to bite the hand that feeds you” compounded by the fact that most if not all, would not be able to seek employment anywhere else none would not raise a finger on anything that are seen to be going against Taib’s liking. In fact some went to the extent of praising Taib for passing some of the amendments to the land code that clearly disadvantage the NCL owners!
Thirdly, the Federal government couldn’t be bothered one bit about the well being of the Dayaks. Mahathir had come and gone, Badawi had come and almost gone. Najib will be coming. He has shown interest but for the moment it is mere interest!
So the Dayaks are in limbo and they are losing their very important asset – land by the day!
Taib engineered it, Dayak politicians saw it and did not do anything; some are unashamedly his partners in crime; Federal government is either too far away or couldn’t be bothered!
The Way Forward
The problem is serious and if nothing is done most of NCL will be gone before vision 2020 sets in. According to the 2005 reports of Land and Survey Department, some 1.2 million hectares of land were approved for oil palm plantations, the bulk of which is NCR lands. And by the year 2015, some 4 million hectares of land are to be planted with oil palm. Out of the total, about 1.5 million hectares are NCR land. By then there will be a few acres of NCR land left, if any.
One of the ways for the Dayaks to get out of the situation is to use their democratic rights smartly i.e. to vote for party that promise to solve the land issue.
The stand of the BN and that of current Dayak politicians stand are clear – they don’t care one bit about NCL-they have been with Taib for the last 28 years !
The least the Dayak people should do is to put up credible line of opposition to BN. Twenty-eight years of suffering is too long and losing one’s own land is painful. It is time for the Dayak to get their land back and the only way is to VOTE OUT BN and VOTE IN PKR!
Let’s begin the journey of a thousand miles in Batang Ai! and there is no better candidate than Bawin, the guy who was sacked by Taib for supporting Nor Nyawai case!

Just concerned that SNAP or other personalities planted by Bn to defeaat Pakatan Rayaat. Just take into account in the strtegy in case.
Dont bring issue of PHD terbai or not. Leave it to other times. dont divert attention. concentrate on the upcoming battlein Batang Ai unless who ever brought the iss of PHD is meant to divert our attention to something else. BN strategy against opposition. Irrespective of De John is terbai or not is immaterial at this instance. But I must say I admire what he did to getr the dayak united. Well he is a politicia. Mr. Francis,
Sad to hear from you that the dayaks have been bullied until now but our dayak ministers, MPs and state assemblymen are just quiet about it.
On you part, what is your planning/action to help dayaks?
I agree with you Bawin is a good PR candidate for Batang Ai by-election but he has not patience enough when he abandoned MDC before its application for registration was official rejected by the Home Ministry. Are you confident that Bawin will not jump ship if he wins the election?
aku enda nemu nama agenda orang luar tu, Ba runding aku siko ia diupah BN kena ngaga penyarut ba dayakbaru blog tu.Aku ngelala nicholas bawin bepuluh ia taun.Orang ari lemanak, engkari, batang ai enggau ari maioh menoa bukai selalu sangkai bemalam ba rumah ia betanya ka belanja kena anak sekula enggau tulong ti bukai.

Cheers
Some say “litmus test” and some say “acid test”. Well, we need to refine the ye-olde method for testing.
Once the candidate from each party is known, so here’s the GAME PLAN:
I agree in principle with what has been written by gkm2020. Yes, how about setting up a b(u)y-election LIVE DEBATE – specifically tailored for N. 29 Batang Ai? Yes, invite all the candidates (including independent candidate(s)) for the debate! Let us hear from them about their vision, mission, policies, etc.
To be fair and square, let’s invite Dr. Dusit Jaul of SDGA as moderator – on voluntary basis. If Dr. Dusit declines the invitation, then do find other moderator(s). DayakBaru.com will be the organizer (including rights for video shooting) and BN component parties should sponsor light refreshment or dinner…
Remember, this is only STEP 1 for the DEBATE. We’ll see later on which party/parties will decline the DEBATE invitation. STEP 2? The point is there already. STEP 3 and so forth? We’ll think about it, lah!
Well, it might sound silly, but that’s it!
ARE WE ARE GOING TO MAKE IT BIG IN N.29 BATANG AI???!!!
BATANG AI VOTERS, ARE YOU READY TO ROCK AND ROLL???!!! WOO-HOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Akai dai, nyau sida di LA (ukai Los Angeles, anang saru, unggal) ke nyadi guinea pig neh?
