Open letter to Dato Sri Dr. James Jemot Masing

Dear Dato,
About 2000 years ago, there was this community leader in today’s Israel. He was a pharisee and a member of the sanhedrin (council of Jewish elders in Jerusalem, appointed by the Roman authorities to oversee Jewish affairs) and therefore has some clout.
He became acquainted with a man called JESUS during one nocturnal visit. All evidence suggested that this Nicodemus fellow believed that JESUS was what He claimed Himself to be, namely the Messiah. Indeed, after JESUS was crucified, it was Nicodemus who together with Joseph of Aremathia, took JESUS body down from the cross and prepare it for burial.
One of the most significant aspects of the ‘relationship’ between JESUS and Nicodemus is the missed opportunity to witness on the part of Nicodemus.
There was a point in their relationship when JESUS was faced with the prospect of arrest by the authorities, namely the Sanhedrin. Nicomdemus, as we can recall is a member of the Sanhedrin.
Nicodemus, having been acquainted with JESUS and best as we can gather, personally believed that JESUS is the Messiah, could have testified / witnessed to JESUS as the messiah but he did not. Instead he appealed to due process (of the Jewish laws) hoping that the process of the law will save JESUS from harm.
Nicodemus did what he did because the consequence of witnessing to the truth was far too heavy for him to bear. It would mean expulsion from the Sanhedrin and loss of his pharisaic office together with all the attendant privileges.
John 3 : 1-2 and John 7 : 50-51
Why am I recounting these episodes from passages from John’s gospel?
Dato, when you were interviewed by Al Jazeera t.v, you had a window of an opportunity to witness to the truth but like Nicodemus of old, you did not.
I can only assume that your fear of loss of office, together with all the attendant status symbol, power, privileges etc overcame whatever sense of honor and duty there is in you. I will not venture to suggest anything beyond that.
The question that I would like to pose to you now and which I would like you to pose you yourself is ‘How long can I pretend, day after day, that there is nothing wrong with governance and delivery of the rakyat dues in the state of Sarawak’.
There is a section from the visuals of the interview which will be etched in my mind for a long time to come. It is that part where you touch your neck-tie, making as if you wanted to loosen it.
Your body language told me (and a whole lot of other viewers I suspect) that you were highly uncomfortable with all the denial you were making to defend your boss Pehin Sri and you subconsciously wished you can make yourself comfortable by telling the truth.
There is a question which continue to linger on my mind which is ‘Why does Dr James Masing appear so subservient and is unduly beholden to Pehin Sri?
Dato Seri, you know the truth about the governance of the state. You know the truth about delivery of the rakyat dues. You know where your people stand right now and you know it is not a pretty sight.
You missed one window of an opportunity (among the numerous your people presented to you) last week. You have another now that you have been tasked with directing BN’s campaign initiatives in Batang Ai.
Do you have the courage and the moral standing to do what is right by your people? The late Dublin Unting also had his chances and he muffed them all and finally, he had no chance to redeem himself. May GOD have mercy on him and grant him eternal repose.
I am prepared to give you the benefit of doubt. I believe that there is some moral fibre, some decency in everyone no matter what. Please leave BN, join PKR and together, lets win Batang Ai for PKR, a party that is truly by the people, of the people and for the people. A party whose guiding principles is guided by Ketuanan Rakyat. Let PBB have Mussen.

People like Masing will not be accepted in PKR- a known bluffer who doesn’t even feel guilty seeing his own species marginalised, cheated, robbed etc.

For a person like JJM, if I were to compare him with Mr Nicodemus, he is still far for doing what Nico had done. Nico is still rich even after accepting Jesus and he was getting richer in spirit and perhaps he was even richer but maybe fired from the Sanhedrin. Well, he did not mind to lose his status for doing so. While, JJM still love to enjoy the privilege being the Bigok’s crony and getting rich in a certain way coz there is a spirit that urges him to do it in a certain way. Nico did not make himself poor by following Jesus but being materialistic was not his priority. He knew he could still be blessed with riches even after accepting Jesus but all his riches were gotten in HALAL way. as the muslim say. If he accepted Jesus but still practised betrayer or corruption, then, all the riches he got were illegal in the Kingdom of God.
I think, JJM is still far from being rich like Nico to leave the comfort zone for the sake of the dayak.
This JJM is hopeless and helpless, just like a stone in the older day’s toilet…

Well written JBA. I have invited JM to join PR. Till now he is as stubborn as he was, because he has to be stubborn. I still believe that JM is a good Dayak, if only Taib dies.
I am inclined to think that Masing is also playing the role of Judas. Remember the Bible tells us that Judas shared the dinning table with Jesus and the rest of the disciples. Its was Judas who informed the enemies who Jesus was and where he was. No doubt he may felt guilty but its was okay so long as he got paid for his role, to have Jesus caught,killed and crucified.
In the earthly world Masing is telling and assisting Taib how to crucify, oppress, marginalise,ethinic clease,genocide the Dayak community. Like Judas, who plot to kill his very own friend ,Masing also is plotting & assisting the BN to “kill” his very own roots, the Dayaks.
Masing really don’t mind doing what he did for the sake of status symbol, power, privileges.He is rewarded & praised by Taib ( not by the almigthy) for the job well done but his guilt will haunt him for the rest of his stay in this temporary residence.Amen
I am praying that all the Dayaks die on the Cross like Jesus & hell of fire awaiting Masing.
Just curious how Brokenshield & Miss Kepayang accurately predicted on Jawah candidacy. They must be very influencial group in PKR, even Dayak Baru didn’t quite get there.From now on better trust them for accurate & reliable political info.
I heard that now they are predicting that Jawah will win by 400 over votes.
I shared a room with JJM at Meligai Hotel Kapit 20+ years ago. He boasted to me how he rejected Taib’s invitation to join BN when PBDS was still the opposition.
When I met him again after he “leapt” to BN he humbly told me that he had many issues to address for the Dayak Community but he was not brave enough to hurt friends’ feelings.
JJM, you are a capable man. You should lead us and be the next CM.

To be fair, we should ask all dayaks who were not voting for PBDS in 1987 state election to repent.
what about other dayak YBs who are now in BN?
Bear in mind that, we dayaks are minority group and it is not wise to bring religion & race into politics because we tend to lose focus, and slowly other races (who choosed to join us fighting for sarawak rights) run away from us.
The muslims can beat their trumpets at any worship places to garner support because they are majority.
For us dayaks, even among ourselves pengarap enda sama.
Focus…dont pour oil into the fire..do not incite hatred otherwise we will be dragged into iron bars, charge for sedition act.

Then what the hell is J*bu doing in distributing the so-called Manual Adat Iban to longhouse chiefs/ TR? Since when Dayak adat must view outside elements deemed disrespectful? Or specifically mention the name PKR as disrespectful? Why don’t J*bu create another Adat Dayak Manual to curb the drinking and nyabong gambling culture? You see folks, it’s J*bu that mock the Dayak adat for his own myopic brand of politics. How about those masking the unfair state land code to rob the native land and give it to the plantation cronies? Any Dayak adat can be quoted to denouce such disrespect for Dayak rights huh? You know that some excavator operator died in Bakun after he tried to flatten a sacred tree feared by the Punans prior for access road to the dam? Isn’t it a disrecpect for Dayak adat?
What if that sacred bird to Dayaks called burong ketupong or burong girik suddenly whistle ‘krik krik kuok kuok ngundi p-k-r’ and all Dayaks must obey, do not do anything do not work except go out and vote p-k-r? Don’t you know a Dayak can shoot the bird and prevent the ill-fated from happening, like death? What, shoot all that birds available whenever Dayak spot it? You can mock the belief system but never attempt to rewrite or redefine it to your whims and fancies. The Dayak adat exist long before the Dayak knew what is that thing called democracy plus political parties BN or PKR while Brooke Rajahs try in vain to search that magic metal inserted in some Dayak warriors’ vein to make you ‘kebal’ or invincible which the Dayak still holds today, and sadly sold to the highest bidder.
Black magic you might think of Dayak adats but Dayak know whom to believe. So you take some Dayak adat manual rather more than its face value? Better rewrite it and specifically mention by wording all the opposition names possible and make it a new custom/adat to vote for BN. Adat Ngundi BN, that’s sound better and simply perfect. How about the Holy Bible then? Why not distribute it to all Dayak leaders, to all tuai rumah? Yes, distribute Holy Bibles. What, sound mocking the knowledge of Dayak about Christianity? Don’t know the meaning of Steal and Bribe is the same? Don’t shoot the burong ketupong/girik because Thou shall not kill?
Enough of this outsider-adat crap. Leave the Dayak adat alone to the Dayaks and WRONG for one man to dubiously manipulate it.
The next PKR project will be in Balleh, preparing a battle on JJM in the next state election. Kick this MONKEY out from leading Sarawak Dayaks + Ibans into the drains…..

I think, however, we should move forward and part ways peacefully. He has been touted as the Dayak hero but to appeal for him to become our CM is only to reaffirm that. Please, not after what he said on Aljazeera.
Now that we are not allowed to use that word to pray, he has to pray in English, then he can at least use the word ‘God’.
On a serious note, since our writer mention the gospel, what is our Christian BN leaders stand on this issue? Today’s Borneo Post reported that that word is not to be discussed anymore. If this ‘future CM’ can stand up for us and insist the Ibans can say Allah or Allah-ta-allah, then mine is an ‘aye’ but otherwise it’s ‘nay’, now and forever.
I salute you all for the outstanding critiques and information gathering.

It was Moggie who brought PBDS to join BN immediately after 1991 state election.
And it was JJM who sacrificed a lot of his personal life to fight for Dayaks rights so that Ibans can prosper at par with other races. And why the Ibans not supported PBDS in that election?
Bloggers like you all only talk from your desk, why cant you guys come to the ground and explain to our people how to be self-independent? why should they listen to you guys if by cooperate with the government in implementing the projects they are happy people having the income to pay for their daily needs?

I read with interest your comment on the abuse of the dayak adat. Nowadays the dayak adat is a piece of anachronistic adornment to worn by the powers of the day to the disadvantage of the dayaks and when convenient to the advantage of those in the corridors of power.
Take for example plasi menoa when converted to dollars and sense rm1700 or so. belanja anak enti sarak enggau laki about 200. enti mumpong ka perabong tunggu 200. pemali rm50.
enti penghulu ka tudoh perintah mutus nadai appea. terus rerak rumah. enti minta stay enda iboh. surat pemutus enda iboh meri timpoh tau ngapil.
It is simply raw justice and the adat iban has been reduced as instrument of oppression by those in power albeit through their mostly illiterate penghulu tudoh.
The iban adat is as good as the penghulus foot.
Now ajn wish to decorate the ibans with their manual which is not worth the paper it is written on . the reason being the adat is an ossified costom fit for the kerangas left out of the plantation and perhaps wiill sink into the peats for future generation to observe in thier lab as a specimen as having no teeth.

That was 18 years ago, 1991 state election. Just for the record only. I heard leaders of PBDS did approach him for candidate to contest against Ujang.
How far the story is correct, ask Dr. John himself, and why he rejected the offer, I am not the right person to tell you. Tanya iya empu.
In fact, org ai kemena enda suntuk candidate, maioh bepelajar tinggi ke ulih ngalah ke Ujang maia nya, but I think they rather play safe, sekeda angka agi alang2 ngidup kediri, baru nyumbuk, enggai baka Dr. Jemut puas merinsa kempen, ukai ulih ngena bilun baka BN. Menang pan sida ngelaban Ujang maia nya kada enda nilat burit Taib baka akih aku siko nya.
