Bring the words Change to N29 Batang Ai & Sarawak! Part I
Written by gkm2020
Tabi Kaban, this is one of the most important agenda for all Dayak to go forward and transform our communities if we want to make that miracle Change – “Dayak Vision 2020”.
Building capacities for Change
To Change means to transform. All local communities are faced with the need to prepare themselves for a constantly changing, interconnected and increasingly complex society. This article emphasizes the needs to develop Dayak community of the future via DayakBaru Weblog of learners throughout any community who have the capacity to understand the impact of trends of the future and who work in parallel to our Dayak communities strategic planning.
DayakBaru may not be the best platform but by going a step forward in our vision to help transform and equip Dayak communities to become a progressive, advance and modern as One Dayak Community.
Without developing new capacities for transformation, communities will continue to try to improve existing ways. It is important to be aware that incremental change and the old ways of doing things no longer work. Because existing schools, colleges and universities are often wedded to old forms and traditional concepts of thinking and power, improving what exists may well be counterproductive because people are allowed to avoid deeper causes and issues. This gives a wonderful opportunity for Dayak to build networks of 21st century learners who are willing to explore new ideas and innovative ways of preparing for the future.
This article offers suggestions of how our Dayak leaders (We) can introduce the concept of building capacities for transformation into the thinking and activities of Dayak communities. To lead, we must not totally or entirely depend on our leaders but we must lead together with our leaders to empower and develop our own communities. But leaders too must physically be seen serving the grassroots level and continuously establish their presence.
Frankly speaking, I do not believe in One Way or My Way but Two Ways and Our Consensus Approach. One Way or My Way is primitive thinking. If one Langkau Umai is not enough, we build one new Longhouse and if one longhouse is not enough, we will build one new Menua: One Dayak Community.
This is how we can regroup together to become more united. Herein, I would like to suggest to Dr John Brian to promote, stimulate and to continuously register DayakBaru memberships as a step forward to Change We Must. Lock in the memberships registration form and gather our DayakBaru as One Team.
Identifying the Need for Transformation
Almost without exception, new ideas are resisted. One local leader was overheard to say, why do we need to look at the future, we can’t even deal with the present. Although there is some truth in this statement, it also reflects a lack of understanding that we are in the midst of change that is increasingly complex, interdependent, threatening, uncertain and faster.
In a fast paced society we will have to deal with the present and prepare for the future at the same time using parallel processes. Without an ability to understand the trends of the future and their impact on existing issues and future challenges, one will not see the need for major transformation of how we think and act in a constantly changing society.
Until an individual sees the need for change, no true change can occur because of the struggle and commitment that is necessary. In addition, until a community environment allows people to be open to new ideas, there is no safe haven for thinking differently. Finally, until local communities begin to see value in talking about ideas, there will be resistance to real change.
The impact of new technology, the increase in population and the connections due to real time communications, are changing the very essence of our institutions and how they are structured. No longer fixed and rigid with standardize rules, a pattern of dynamic and constantly changing connections require a change in our human consciousness and a change in:
1. How we understand the world and our surrounding (internal, external and beyond)?
2. How we relate to each other and respect each other for others to respect us?
3. How we can regroup together to strength our foundation – Dayak Unity?
4. How we think, educate, learn, progress and advance?
5. How we lead and govern?
6. How we find deeper meaning and purpose?
7. How we promote and maintain health?
8. How we relate to the planet and to Nature?
9. How we understand and work within a regional and global economy?
If we use old ways of thinking
Old ways of acting and old ways of organizing our strategies, we will not be ready for the present or the future. Unless we begin to search for new ideas, methods, tactics and techniques, we will find we cannot move fast enough, be trustful enough of each other, have enough different solutions available or understand the realities of constantly changing situations.
We are entering an age where there are no standard models because there is constant change. New principles of thinking and new structures of organization will emerge as community research and development is creates new experiments, new pilot concepts and new networks of collaboration.
As ones begin the journey of helping a local community begins to think and act differently, ones need to understand that there are several simultaneous efforts that will be necessary. All will need to be developed in parallel. All will be based on creating a positive environment that will help others see the need for change and come to the conclusion that transformation should occur.
Conclusion
If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, it expects what never was and never will be … The People cannot be safe without information. When the press is free, and every man is able to read, all is safe. If we think that we can secure our Dayak communities and country by just talking tough without acting tough and smart, then we will misunderstand this moment and miss its opportunities. If we think that we can use the same partisan playbook where we just challenge our opponent’s patriotism to win an election, then the Dayak and the majority of the people will lose. The times are too serious for this kind of politics.
Taib, egoist style by championing himself as most senior and experienced politician in Sarawak has started on blaming and pointing finger at his ex-YBs (Jawah Gerang, Gabriel Adit, and many others) mostly ex-PBDS members including the late Dublin Unting and/or Jabu himself had failed to bring any development to N29 Batang Ai constituency and many others. He has forgotten to see himself at the mirror for the last 35 years as Chief Minister/Head of State and BN State Chairman. It’s a real shameful to see N29 Batang Ai without any hospital but a small rotten 1965 clinic, two rows of shoplots, no proper basic facilities, no proper rural roads, no proper clean water supply, no proper school and so on.
I’m just wondering, is he not ashamed of his 35 years serving as the Chief Minister & “Resource Planning Masters” has strategically overlooked N29 Batang Ai/Sri Aman – inequitable, bias yet prejudice plan of rural development of Sarawak? Who’s actually deciding the allocation and prioritizing the BN State Budget? What can his subordinates’ YBs and/or political alliances do if they don’t have any say of the budget and others? Just take a look at the different between Tg. Manis, Mukah and Kota Samarahan development with the many Dayak rural/underserved areas? Taib’s 35 years regimental political power had obviously ignored the indigenous Dayaks!
Vote for PR for People Rights & for your next generation benefits! Your soul is valueless NOT RM1,000.oo or RM2,000.oo or one night stand/one week BN feast! Don’t let BN waste taxpayers money.
