Visit to Kaong long house in Batang Ai
A visit by Minister(s) is always a big occasion in a Dayak longhouse. So a visit by YB Datuk Joseph Entulu, PRS deputy president and YB Datuk Joseph Salang, PRS information chief is no different. As is the tradition, after the guests and VIP visitors are seated the head of the long house would take the microphone and extend friendly greeting and warm welcome to the VIP visitors and those that came with them.
This welcome is different
The initial welcoming speech was normal, gracious and polite. The Head of the long house paid tribute to BN 45 years performance in bringing progress to Batang Ai. As an Iban listener it was a stright forward speech until the very end when the Tuai Rumah said ” in conclusion I want everyone in this long hose NOT to VOTE for BN”.
The emcee was quick to response by reminding Tr Ambau that what he said was wrong – “not PKR he said vote for BN”. The Tuai Rumah said “yes – I heard you” again he said very clearly and precisely ” vote PKR and do not vote for BN”.
Now that act of defiance is seldom displayed by Tuai Rumah of a long house in front of BN / government Minister but that is what Tuai Rumah Ambau uttered to Entulu and Salang. He actually explained to the people why they should not vote for BN -you can imagine the pro -BN Emcee and other community leaders reaction to the speech.
A bit of History
Batang Ai is the only territory in Sarawak that the White Rajah failed to suppress during the Rajah rule. In fact Batang Ai has never been subdued by any power in Sarawak.
In the White Rajah last war expedition of Delok, the White Rajah army was nearly wiped out before they could even faced Ngumbang Berani army in Delok. The White Rajah army suffer an epidemic of cholera on their way to fight in Delok.
Legend says, a big snake “nabau” appear just on the upper river of Batang Ai and clean its scale. The Rajah army drank the water that the snake used to clean it scale and they caught a cholera epidemic because of that.
The implication
The Iban of Batang Ai remain fiercely independent and very strong in the mind of what is good or bad for them.They never failed to articulate their opinion and has defeated BN several times and one is in a by -election eg. Klingsing (BN -SNAP) vs Mikai Mandau (PBDS) in the late 80′s.
Current Batang Ai By-election
Jawah Gerang is known to be out spoken. He is known to be very vocal. So much so some in BN Jabu/Masing describe Jawah as not a team player. therefor in the PRU12, BN failed to renominate Jawah to the MP seat of Lubuk Antu.
As history would tell, he left PRS and joined PKR. He was not keen to contest in the current by-election. However, PKR top brass could not ignore his potential to win the Batang Ai DUN seats after many Tuai Rumah impressed upon PKR leadership that Jawah has the best chance to win against BN.
PKR is now working hard, conducting door-to-door campaigning to reach out to the most number of actual voters to convince them that PKR is a viable party to represent them through Jawah Gerang.
We will await April 7th anxiously.

There is a Kiswahili (the lingua franca of East and South Africa) proverb which says: “Unapowadia nyumbani huwa wahisi kuchoka” (As you near home, you feel overwhelming tiredness). For those of you who trek (walked for a long distance), or go to a far market by walking, you will notice that once you head back home and as your your home, you feel overwhelming tiredness and may even STOP for a while though you can see your home/house from a distance. This is what I want to say: as you near the final countdown, you will feel tiredness and many more challenges, and it is said in Sarawak, the last 3 days decide, so don’t STOP for a while to rest. Move on, soldier on and persevere. In the end you will make it and be aware that power (Taib and his Dayak slaves like Jabu and Masing) will mever concede nor accept the idea that you Dayaks should understand the power of your ballot.

Many PBB and PRS ministers and YBs always regard Batang Ai a remote and extra territory in their political mind. When they need you, they cheer your names and praise your souls, saying all the good nice things about you and promising all the sweet dreams for your to wait on
When they wanted you to move away from your ancesterial lands to give way to the hydroelectric project, they promised your secured future in resettlement scheme and system. But, were not the lands paid under market and appropriate price and compensated accordingly. Jabu was one of the big “Apek Bayat” and he hated late YB Sylvester Langgit most because Langgit questioned him most and chased after him for answers.
Batang Ai Ibans still inherit the many BERANI spirits of their ancestors, yet they still possess the high degree of friendliness, politeness and good brotherhood out pour. But, if one continues to step on them, he makes a big mistake. That is what TR Ambau has delivered to the PRS YAB Ministerss and YBss – The Right Color For The Right Men At The Right Time
Many Batang Ai Ibans were strong supporters to PBDS since the days of late YB Kelambu, ex-YB Mikai and especially with late YB Datuk Dublin, in and out PBDS then PRS which they really felt puzzled and confused on the internal fighting between party factions. These strong grass roots have to find new direction and trust in their political, socio-economy trust. Many really gave up since the falling sick of late YB Datuk Dublin and from such time that no PRS seniors really care for Batang Ai

Look at my father. He was the only PBDS member who stuck to Leo Moggie during hard times. They wanted to demote him as a Tuai Rumah but he just smiled at them and stuck to his belief. Even today he is not in favour of any groups or parties which suppress the Ibans.
He is still the Tuai Rumah until today. Be strong in your belief and don’t be fooled by promises and dirty tricks.

You might want to share with the rest how Kevin Michael Rudd’s Labor party managed to kick out John Howard’s Liberal/National coalition.
Who know? The same strategies can be applied in Sarawak context although the comparison between both example like – langit dan bumi in terms of political maturity.
It’s good to know that they are courageous Tuai Rumah like Tr Ambau who cannot be bought. Unfortunately there are too few of them.
The battle for Batang Ai is not just a by-election. It’s crucial to the opposition in that a win will carry the momentum to the rest of Sarawak and that a new state government is possible. It’s a clear message that we the people holds the power and leaders who fail us must be changed.

Rain or shine, the party leader(s) always have one mission and same objectives for the rakyat. They never get perturbed by the opponents. They have enough resouces in term of money & human. That’s why labour walaupun terpaksa menunggu 3 terms, akhir nya dapat juga kalahkan Liberal, same to Democrat of USA.
Any leader/ representative who the rakyat feel not doing their work always voluntarily step down. Handover of party leadership from veteran to young blood always smooth and proper.

What happen if I am pro-PKR writing in this blog? You could be very complacent, and you thought that at the battle ground 85% of the voters also support PKR…what I need to post here is only repeating my support, Undi PKR 10x daily
If we learn how to accept every blogger’s opinion & perception on party strength & weaknesses, we might be able to do brainstorming on the strategy: right for the first time and always do it right (TQM principle). Whenever in doubt, come up with the solutions but dont bring the problem.

PKR is well-respected in Malaysia now. Their leaders are not only clean but people-oriented as well. If not PKR governs Selangor, do we really know what embezzlements that Khir Toyo did when BN was in power. Isn’t it about time for us to send out clear messages to Taib and his lackeys that their days are numbered.

I am glad Dr John has that part of history/legend about “nabau.” According to the bits and pieces I gathered, Ngumbang Berani was facing punitive expedition and had his “gawai – sandau ari.” He called for divine help but the “orang panggau” failed to respond. On the third night he had a dream that one “Ulat Bulu” responded.
The account of Tuai Rumah Ambau sent cold chills down my spine – bulu ngeresik. With all the curses and the “no 9” mentioned, this bastion could be defended by no one but just the “Ulat Bulu.” On the day the punitive party arrived, so the legend had it, a huge “nabau, mesai giling bidai” appeared and seemed to cut cross the river. The old folks who remember (care to remember), say that it washed its scales before disappearing. And as mentioned by Dr John, the invading army died of cholera epidemic.
PR is indeed the “Ulat Bulu” now seemingly helpless, crawling, walking and rowing when the might of the State Ministers use helicopters and 4WD.

Remember, never dig yourself in the Comfort zone for too long to enjoy the noodles or create open party among your colleagues who seem to be in full force suppoters of that party tapi ukai pengundi N29.
Elite supporters or campaigners, dont segregate yourself from the normal people, never show off your luxuries be it talking, eating, get together.
Any of the above behavior will make the voters think that you come to enjoy yourself for the election instead of helping them to achieve the party objective- win the election.
Bear in mind that, especially if you well known to the voters thru press or whatever information during this by-election, dont be emotional and play harsh words when you encounter with your opponents (or party loyalist from the opposite camp). Why? because every move you make and every breath you take the voters are watching you! Be polite to your opponent even if you felt letdown by their harsh comments.
You dont have to be a hero and feel great at all times when walk into the oppenent dens but you must be firm with the party struggle/ objectives. Scoop whatever instant noodles along the way and say thank you but dont feel indebted to the givers.
Dont lose steam before the finishing line, have enough sleep so that your stamina last till the end of the battle. Avoid any food or drink that make you forget about party struggle. Nothing wrong quenching yourself with 1-2 tins of beer after a long day walk & talk
You have the mission to accomplish for your party.

I trust Batang Ai N29 “wildfire” will spread soon across Sarawak shores and consumed its Iban inhabitants this time around.
Winning in LA most certainly will trigger that fire in everyone’s bellies and it’s going to spread further into the hinterland.
PBDS did that once, but that fire was somehow, quelled.

Yes! I believe so. The younger generations of Iban will not be taken lightly after this.
The crowd in LA was the sign of times, we saw and witnessed that on Nomination day.
In 5 years, we may not see a BN anymore if Batang Ai is won convincingly.

whoever enggai nerima criticism is not our leader. I learnt a lot from the failure of our political struggles (Dayakism) and read few international comments throw at their respective leaders.
In western coutries when the voters criticized them (leaders) or not agreed with their opinions, the later even come to the extend of hiring professional to answer the critics in all corners, internal or external.
Unlike in Sarawak, especially our leaders, bila kena kritik or bagi jab sikit terus kecewa dan berdendam. To please them, what we nornally do, anguk2 saja on whatever decision they made eventhough not unanimous. By right, they should please us, answerable to our enquiries/ expectation, accountable and responsible for every unpopular decision.
Learnt from PBDS grave mistakes, kita ikut saja apa kata mereka. In that way, we didnt play a role to evaluate them but rather just passengers or followers. What happened, when crisis flared up they can desert us (the party loyalist without fangs) anytime they wish because we were not part of the team, pengikut aja. There was no sense of ownership to the common goals by party loyalists. Therefore with or without us our leaders can let go the party struggles for self-interest…engkechit party is best example.
This time, if you repeat the same thing, anguk saja apa leader buat, next time dont feel regret and disappointed again by our leaders (ke dipuji ngau pengambis ati buta2 anguk kepala).
We have the brains consist of billion neurons to make us smart in making evaluation/ review/ criticism to and of the party or leaders we support. Dont just look at the wall in the coconut shell only but look far away, like playing chess, if your planning is only reactive to your opponent move you lose the game. To win it you must think 5-6 steps advance or ahead of each move so that you have few options to make counter attack to your opponent every move.

Cherita tu ukai semina chara kebetulan tang amat nyadi. Sehari sebedau nganjong calon, aku duduk enggau bala apai-indai, bala menyadi ke udah lama enda enggau betemu. Nyau bisi empat meja penuh enggau kami ngirup kopi. Siti meja endor apai aku duduk begulai enggau bala iya ke udah bekas soldadu/border scout nyengkaum aya Tr. Ambau. Udah nya aku mindah duduk begulai enggau sida. Kami bejako pasal pengidup sampai ngagai politik. Sida nanya aku, baka ni ko runding aku enggau penemu orang di luar negeri. Aku madah, aku enda rinduka politik, aku rindu agi ba penemu tengahhari, kitai ngemansangka bansa ngena cara ngeringka hak Dayak. Tang PR kediatu benong nuju ngering ka Civil Right ke sebaka enggau Hak Dayak. Udah nya kami berandau panjai. Secara ringkas, dia sida madah enti aku enda datai madah ka reti utai baka nya, angka agi kayang-kayang penemu sida laban bisi sekeda sida udah leju enggau uchak Jawah tang udah kelalu lenju enggau pemula BN.
Lalau aku, enti bereratus iko bala kitai ke datai ke Lubok Antu ulih narit ati bala pengundi bakanya, maioh utai oleh kitai. Enti kitai semina ngarap ka diri bejako ba Blogg aja, bejako ba micropohone aja tang enggai duduk berimbai betanya berandau enggau bala pengundi, pengawa kitai ke pengujung iya enda nyalah baka kitai ke batuk ba pala tanga, nadai bisi tentu tungga.
Duduk meh kitai berandau enggau naka pemaioh bala pengundi ke bisi ditemu kitai. Introduce ka diri lalu berandau. Anang tak jenggo-jenggo duduk, tak telinggo-linggo bejako ngena microphone aja. Sida semina bekerja 15 hari aja sebulan enggau gaji 18RM sehari ba SALCRA. Tanah dua ikar aja ke udah diberi. Tanah nadai agi endor bumai enggau bekebun. Sinu aku meda pengidup sida sampai aku enda berasai mantai ka anak lumpit ngerupit utai dalam lumpit nulong sida.
Enti BN ngena Tuai Rumah Dayak ngerampas undi ngena jalai kasar nama penyalah PR enda tau ngena jalai kasar.

Bansa bugis udah mayoh masok di serata menoa Sarawak lebih agi bagi ka EMPAT. Enda lama agi IC deka di sadong di seruoh Baram nyadi anak asal lalu oleh ngundi S.Entri ila BE baka di SABAH sampai 3-5 Million oranga asal bakong BEWARE…………Dr.John tu udah di perjalai sida BN. Kunsil di Bakong, Baram semoa anak Taib engau Jabu.
Arap ka YB Abit oleh nemuai lalu nerang ka pekara ukai ba menoa iya aja tua ngagai menoa kami di Baram.
