BN trying to avoid losing another by-election

Written by Dr. John Brian Anthony

Funny but it is true

When PENANTI – a DUN seat in Permatang Pauh announced his resignation from the seat, BN was visibily upset because they do not like to lose to Opposition again.

It must be pretty hard for BN to lost 4 By-elections and winning one in Batang Ai in Sarawak. BN cannot take any more bruised of their EGO. They started to try to change the “rule” and giving a thousand excuses on why a by-election is not necessary. Some of the excuses are: EC spending too much money, the people are fed up, the opposition are simply playing around etc.

Actually, BN cannot win the BN election so they give excuses not to contest even. The more BN lost the election, the worst they looked in the eyes of the public.

Money

The amount of money the EC spent on an election is not not much compared to what BN poured into the constituency to try to buy the voters vote. BN “Instant Noodle” in Batang Ai is $80 million. The expenses incurred by EC is not even 3% of that amount. But for BN – win they must – so keep on promising the people and also to give away cash as incentive.

Now the Iban in Batang Ai are quarreling over the BN money as some community leaders are doing an “Animal Farm” type of approach: that is some people are more equal than others and therefor should be given more money.

Najib need to get Taib and Jabu advise on how to win the By-election in West Malaysia

Taib and Jabu are masters in winning election. Perhap UMNO should employ their service and make Jabu / Masing to become their Director of Operation for the Penanti by-election. The great orator skill of Jabu and Masing will surely sway the Malay votes in Penanti. The money of Taib from his business monopoly in Sarawak should be the main financial source to finance the by-election. Maybe helicopters are also needed in Penanti. The message should be simple:

  • only BN can bring progress to Penanti
  • you cannot fight the government
  • we will give you $500 per home to vote for BN
  • we will supply you with roofing material, paint, curtain, plastic plate and spoon
  • how about an eating and drinking party complete with live band
  • only BN has the money to give the people.
  • there is no body qualified to replace the BN leadership

I would die for wanting to know that such strategies used in Batang Ai are also effective in DUN Penanti of Permatang Pauh. BN Sarawak should give a try.

Sarawak BN Supporters is so proud of their SUPERIORITY in logistic, money and Instant Noodles in Batang Ai

Just reflect for a second – can you imagine that Sarawak BN strategy and battle cry would be successful in Penanti. The BN supporters who live on high moral ground in Sarawak can go around in Penanti and say how bad Anwar is – how irrelevant PKR is in Penanti.

Come on BN Sarawak – if you want to be a real Malaysian hero – just try your game in Penanti, in Anwar home ground. If you feel totally out of place, it is better you check your behavior and admit that BN only win in Sarawak because majority of the voters are uneducated and do not understand the real issue. BN also keep them poor for a purpose.

Keep the Rural Sarawak poor

This is a “REAL” BN strategy in Sarawak. Keep the rural people poor so that they continue to support BN. Why do you think DAP is winning in urban Sarawak? It is because urban voters knows what BN parties are and what they stand for.

Conclusion

For Dayak – today is part of our painful journey into history. We are lied to by our own Dayak leaders. We Dayak has been misdirected, misguided, mistreated by the very people that we voted for and whom we placed our trustto.

It is like living in a weird dream, the lies become truth, the deceits of leadership become our standards and the selfish agenda of our leaders become the dream that BN people wanted to emulate. I hope this night mare would be over soon – 2 years more to go.

Dayakbaru – we have a long battle ahead of us to change the destiny of Dayak. We must dare to dream and Change we MUST.

One Dayak, One People, One Enemy.

Just less than eight months following just concluded 12th country general election, we had five by-elections involving one parliamentary seat and two state seats held simultenously, while another two parliamentary seats were held separately within five months. All the five by-elections cost the country RM33.4 millions.

While we acknowledged that the five by-elections were the process of democracy, some people including the country leaders have different opinions and views.

    i) The Prime Minister of Malaysia, Datuk Seri Najib said that the by-elections were draining resources and the resignations of MPs and assemblymen are political decisions which can also be regarded as a political ploy.

ii) Information, Communication and Culture Minister, Datuk Rais Yatim accused PKR was good at playing `sandiwara` (drama) where the party only dared to contest seats it was confident of winning.

iii) PAS Secretary General, Datuk Kamaruddin Jafaar said having by-election was a price the country had to pay for a `functioning democrasy`.

iv) Malaysia For Free and Election Chairman, Syed Ibrahim Syed Noor in the opinion that by-elections are part of the democratic structure.

    v) The IGP, Tan Sri Musa Hassan said the five by-elections had `swallowed` so much of the police`s funds they wre forced to adjust their allocations for other projects.

With the resignation of the former Penang Deputy Chief Minister, Mohd Farus Khairuddin as assemblyman for Penanti, the Malaysians society expect another by-election is for sure to be held, but Najib is doubtful if the resignation of Mohd Farus is in accordance with the Federal Constitution. Quite funny, isn`t it?

Let we acknowledge that the Election Commission to verify the status of the Penanti seat, and if its finding the seat is vacant, would Najib say it is unconstitutional?

Ke diatu, our priority is how to make an effective strategy to vote out Masing, Jabu, Geramong, Mawan, Ambrose Belikau in the next state election IF they are proven hindering (act as inhibitors instead of catalyts) Iban progress in development, education, employment and cooperate with BN leadership to extinguish Dayaks’ rights bit by bit- slow dead.

If voting them out is like burning the bridge for us to move forward, then we should draw another plan on how to cooperate with them ngemansang ke rayat.

Legi kitai sebala madah, “said is easier than done”. keni ka ngereja pengawa enti bejaku pan enda nemu baka sekeda YB kitai.

  12. Suntat on April 19th, 2009 1:55 pm

Najib in his press statement said that BN may skip Penanti by-eelection as he sees it as a political ploy because the seat is vacant due to the resignation of its incumbent and not because he dies.

Being the chairman of BN, we can interpret Najib`s statement is such a way that BN only recognise the seats vacant by MPs and ADUNs if they die and not by resignations. As we look at from the past records, most of MPs and ADUNs who resigned from their seats, be it from BN or from the oppositions, were due to circumstances reasons in order not to betray the faith and trust given to them by the people.

As for me, when a MP and a state assemblyman resigns from his position, he is considered responsible and gentleman compared to party hopping which is unethical and irresponsible towards the people who gave them mandate.

In respect of BN possibility not to contest the by-election in the Penanti state constituency, they are scared of losing badly judging from the results in the five by-elections recently where we could see the people lost their faith in the BN and the Chinese and Indians were beginning to desert BN.

  13. ABCanair on April 19th, 2009 3:57 pm

BN/UMNO will contest the Penanti by-election either direct or through an independent as their proxy. Not to contest is a ploy to gain votes. It’s through BN/UMNO may engage Taib’s PBB to help out in Penanti by-election, PR coalition should mobilize the iban supporters in West Malaysia to help out in their by-election as well. These Iban polling agents with sharpened scrutinization skills, may then be mobilized in the State Election expected in about one and a half years from now.

Well, I used to thinking that BN is indomitable political lion in the Malaysia’s politic. I was indeed a bit surprised to hear the PM suggesting that the BN may not stand in Penanti by election . Well, well, well we can see PM’s tail is coiling like a terrifyied dog. Keep the pressure up . I begin to sense that Jabu, Masing and Buban tails are about to coil too. One of the member of the pack, Dr Chan, said that he is not going to stand in the coming state election. Who knows all the dogs are geting timid as the clock ticking away after all they are old dogs perhap without front teeths.

    JJM Junior,

You spoke the truth about Sarawak voters. In deed, my memory is very short. What JJ Masing just said few days ago that dayaks are short of “smart” factor in politic which hinders our development. It had been said that we dayaks are cheap commodity much cheaper than balacan, who could be bought by a lot of promises. The recent one being the RM70 million promise for Batang Ai. The would-be-unfufilled promises will be forgoten again in the next general election.

JJM Junior, What do you have to say about that? Any suggestion on improving dayaks’ short memory problem? Because general election is about 2 years away. That if my memory figure it out right?

  42. Remaung Telih on April 22nd, 2009 8:22 am

It is interesting to note that the POLICE spent such a huge amount during the last by elections. Why spent so much on security?

I suppose they are scared of their own shadows. They thought that the publics are potential terrorists and trouble makers. The police have very good reason for making such presumptions because of their own many unpopular decisions and they thought the publics would react accorindly with aggression and disregard of the laws.

It is just unbelievable that the Special Brach are just every where watching our every move.

But that presumptions are yet to be proven true.

I had mentioned at least 3x in this blog. The blog(s) are never be effective to garner rural folks’ support without enough resources. They dont read our ideas here. We can pass the information to them but anything not benefit them on the spot is no better than rubbish.

What we really need for the coming state election is money, assumed that the potential (caliber) candidates for all the constituencies are to be identified ASAP and unanimously supported by the local electorates NOT decided by G7 only. Other people suggested that at least half a million for each contituency.

Apart from that, prepared to send goodies to all voters the earlier the better, baka kitai namam ugu ubi, mulong kena ngumpan undang. Like BN they had a lot of experiences in doing that and their election machineries are ever ready for activation.

If opposition has no money to give the voters and no mean to convert it into bread & butter, we only dare to dream but will never will the election.

The opposition can win popularity votes in this blog as much as the BN-supported blogs can do it but the most important factor to win the election is fight it at battle ground with bread & butter.

NO MONEY NO TALK, we have to accept that very basic philosophy of life!

Here are my answers to you Sir Remaung Telih (That day, I had submitted my answers twice but failed to get thru- after I clicked the submit button). This time I try my luck.

In the next state election Dayak opposition candidates will get ZERO seat ( LOVE set) if:
    1. NOT having sufficient money to cater for the election expenditures. Someone suggested that half a million for each constituency may be enough to match the BN election machineries; for logistics, transportation, wages for workers, giving bread & butter to voters . How we get it & where the money come from do not matter.

    2. NOT searching for potential (caliber) candidates for all the constituencies ASAP. I think, academic qualification does not matter. The most important thing is that candidate for each seat should be uninamously agreed by local electorates and not solely selected based on G7 group (influential persons) opinions.

    3. The fighting/campaigning strategies are not correct or appropriate (still outdated or not relevant- too advance). We may use the blogs & portals to fire our unlimited cruise missiles to criticize the current Ybs bad personalities, wrong doings, corruption, cronyism but still we need to go to the battle ground and meet every corner of electorates to explain the party agenda (objectives, mission etc).

Even if our words here can be converted or translated into real tsunami to flatten Jabu, Masing & Mawan’s houses & offices but at the end of the day a candidate who garners most votes will be the winner, our criticisms have no meaning.

    4. NOT having good relationship with Tuai Rumah, Pengulu, Pemanca, Kunsela, Temenggong & other governement officers (like DO, SAO, Ketua Kemas, Gurubesar, Gurukecil). How can we visit that longhouse/ kampung if the opposition not making an effort to pull their support from now? Iban madah, mesti ka nunduk ke sida, anang bejai. Kitai beguna orang, mesti kitai meh nunduk ke orang, badu nganu tudah. I suggest, if the opposition has the mean to distribute the carrots let’s do it now.

    5. NOT giving/ getting accurate information on voters’ trend of voting prior to and during polling day. The person(s) in charge should try to report the election survey as accurate as possible, get feedbacks from both supporters.

Playing psychological war of words (press warfare) may carry weight and make a difference especially if the chance of winning is 50/50. However, the poor or biase reporting can also backfire or getting backlash!
    For instance,
    a) if the survey reveal that the candidate for the opposition has very high chance of winning, the party campaigners may feel complacent, dig themselves into one corner to have a pre-celebration. Then the BN campaigners will take advantage of the situation and do all out counter-attacks to make as much damage as possible to the opposition.

If the report is genuine that’s ok but not hearsay or just making assumption for temporary jubilation. Reti iya, enti ngaga ripot anang sengapa rembang, anang nyala ngerambang, anang semina deka menyamai ati diri sementara aja, udah nya engkilong baka ekor anjing- disappointment! It’s advisable to confirm the report with other sources before press send/ submit button.

Chunto ripot sengapa rembang tau dipeda ba baruh nya (by Dr. John)

    b) likewise, if the survey says the candidate is underdog and the chance of winning is very slim, then the campaigners will question, why should we continue the campaign, better move the election machineries to other constituenies that need assistance OR better stay at home and be happy to wait for the results and enjoy the bread & butter (if there is) given by the party.

    6. Doing the talking only (NATO) and no PDCA.
