Come Orang Ulu Symposium on 25-26th April 2009.
Hopefully the Orang Ulu Symposium on 25-26th April 2009 will not to be use as a plateform or agenda to Changes the Orang Ulu Name to ‘Lun Daya’ as what is said by YB Lihan. I my self ,some of Orang Ulu Leaders and some NGO members are not happy /not agree /objected( tak setuju) to the suggestion made by YB Lihan. What is worried me is that he have the upper hand with hidden motives or ‘udang disebalik batu’ dalam niat menukar Nama Orang Ulu tersebut because The FORUM is the mouth pieces of the BN Pehin Sri Taib ideas not the original NGO AUNA. It’s not the rigth timing to talk on changes the Orang Ulu Name as suggested by YB Lihan. As a professional or YB he should be proud of himself representing the Orang Ulu in par with others races. FORUM need to concentrated in finding ways how to helping the Orang Ulu during this Economic Problems/crisis. Thanks you.
Any ethnic or racial based symposium is a clear demonstration of the progressive divisions or fractionalisations of dayak races.DIVIDE AND RULE TACTIC.
Hello! Kawan,
25th is NCR Land Seminar to held at Imperial Mall, 5th floor, Miri. Everyone are invited including gov’t bodies, NGOs or BN sympathisers. Why coincide this so call “Orang Ulu Symposium” on this date??? I smell Fish!
I am not for changing the name of OU to LUN DAYA. All the reasons given about rebranding is only cosmetic in nature. Don’t let the negative thoughts took control what has been in you as an Orang Ulu. It is all in the mind. I am proud to be one. Yes, OU is not a race but use your common sense to recap your origin/root which came from the interior (Ulu) of Sarawak. It is for this reason that I loved to be called OU. It does not stop you from achieving your dream. Be yourself….and be OU.
Hidup Orang Ulu!
Till now I am still wondering what is the word ‘DAYAK’. Could it be similar to DUSUN in Sabah? Dayak seems to sound like people of the rural area. No wonder the elite of the Orang Ulu prefers their group Orang Ulu to be rebranded into the ‘LUN DAYA’. The get rid of the ‘K’ ata the end of DAYAK to become DAYA. The orang putih may prefer to call the natives of Borneo as the Jungle People coz they stay in Jungles. So, in malay word, it is cll ORANG HUTAN or for the dayak who has problem saying HUTAN would prefer to pronounce it as Orang Utan. Concidentally, the great monkey look similar to a human, so the Orang Putih called such animal as Orang Utan. That’s why in the past, the West Malaysian still think/believe that SaRAWAKIANS ARE STILL LIVING IN THE TREES OR JUNGLE. Or IF THEy COME TO Sarawak, THEY WOULD EXPECT TO SEE A HOUse in the tree top.

An identity Crisis.
-The Orang Ulu community has arrived at a junction in determining its collective tag. There are two distinct viewpoints-one favours changing the name Orang Ulu to Lun Daya while the other wants to retain status quo.
-The community is split into two camps with a significant number wanting Lun Daya a better reflect the ethnicity and a big majority in favour of retaining Orang Ulu,arguing that the term has been well known and well accepted not only in the country but also internationally.
-The term Orang Ulu come about or become Historical. When the late Temenggong Oyong Lawai, the Paramount Chief of the Natives in Baram and Belaga act as or was regarded as a Leader representative of the Natives in Sarawak (UpRiver People or Orang Ulu) by the Colonial Powers before the Formation of Malaysia. So the term Orang Ulu as a community was recognized, recorded and stated during the Formation of Malaysia.
-The current Paramount leader of the Baram Orang Ulu Temenggong Pahang Ding supported the name changes argued that Lun Daya was more meaningful compared to Orang Ulu although both have the same meaning. This is because Lun Daya is entirely the lingua franca of the natives like Lun Bawang, Kelabit,Kayan,Penan and Kenyah.
**Comment by Jimmy. -So This Community Figures or Leaders that supported the name changes meaning thy want to erase or change History and created their own History(Cari Nama/dicatat nama dlm Sejarahlah).. How about the other Orang Ulu ethnics or natives who have nothing related or foreign to the two words Lun Daya because the 2 words belong to 5 ethnic group only. The others will prefer or remain fixed towards the name Orang Ulu and will bring division or Split the present Orang Ulu Group into two.
-Most members during the Orang Ulu Cultural Symposium last month including the intellectuals of the community voiced their objection because they were taken aback by the issue and taken off guard. Those disagreed with the change said there was nothing derogatory about the term Orang Ulu and they should be proud to be an Orang Ulu or remember their origin, where thy come from. It’s not easy to simply change Orang Ulu to Lun Daya because its other statutory documents the Orang Ulu Customary code of Fines 1957 and 1958 will be useless. The Orang Ulu National Association(OUNA) was approved by the Registrar of Societies in 1966 and the Federation of Orang Ulu Associations Malaysia(FORUM) was just registered in 2007 also need to be revoke? cancel or abolish!.
FORUM President YB Lihan Jok and the Secretary General Ose Murang presented a paper entitled Lun Daya during the Orang Ulu Cultural Symposium sought to convince the various ethnic groups to accept Lun Daya as a collective term of reference for all of them the Orang Ulu. Though Ose Murang in his paper said. Orang Ulu is not the most flattering name. To the uninitiated, how would they know Orang Ulu is a community of people and Orang Utan refers to an animal. This example may seem absurd and extreme but it is a fact. The name Orang Ulu connotes backwardness, being primitve and is frowned upon. The new Lun Daya has its literal and intended meaning-Lun generally means people in most of the ethnic dialect of the Orang Ulu(Lun Bawang/Murud and Kelabit or Kayan).Daya means upriver in Kayan and Kenyah dialects. Daya is a well-known malay word with good and positive meaning as in daya saing(competitiveness),daya upaya( capability0 and daya mampu(ability). In the context of the community, the literal and intended meaning of Lun Daya is therefore Masyarakat yang berbudaya dan berdaya or a cultured and dynamic community. It sound good and nice.
**Comment by Jimmy. -Is Lun Daya have no Negatif meaning? or it also sound not good in similar / simile words or pronounce/pronunciation atau Kata terbitan…daya…. bila rujuk kepada kata dasar daya tidak semuanya elok? Seperti memperdaya, diperdaya, terpedaya bermaksud menipu, ditipu, tertipu.Memperdaya, diperdaya, terpedaya yang dari kata dasar daya meaning cunning, trickery, desire cheat, act dishonestly or unfairly to win profit or advantages and that will happen when a new community Name Lun Daya comne into reality. Lun~Luncai=buncit dan gemuk. Lun~Lunacy/Lunatic =sangat bodoh/tergila 2x
Lun~Lunar=bulan(moon) atau nama orang.
Lun~Luntur=hilang warna(discolour/fade)
**Comment by Jimmy.-Lun Daya as if add insult to injury or History of the Iban Head Hunter in Sarawak. When “Lun Daya” is translated directly into Bisaya lingo means “Slaves of the Iban” by Jackson Lintang. If you want them to remember/recall old memory,it’s true to the extent during the advance expedation of the Iban upriver Rajang the other Orang Ulu Communities (the Kayan, Kajang, Sekapan, Kejaman, Lahanan,Tanjong,Punan,Kanowit,Sebob,Ukit etc) was the Victims of the Iban Head Hunters that forced them to move further upward or upriver Rejang and some migrated to Baram and even go back to Kalimantan. The history some of this small groups of the Orang Ulu was near extinction or almost wipe-off by the Iban during the Head Hunting or Wars before the Confrontation with Indonesia or the Formation of Malaysia and the Peace aggreement in Kapit, Sarawak, Malaysia.
**Comment by Jimmy. -Lun Daya or its sound like: U+Lun=Ulun and Daya+K=Dayak (Ulun Dayak) in Kenyah dialect also means “Slave of the Dayak”. So Lun Daya sound like or similar/simile with “Ulun Dayak” have a very very negatif meaning that hurts the feeling or bring hatred and bad memory of the past.Personally i don’t like or strongly object/rejected the two words “Lun Daya” is not appropriate. Hidup Orang Ulu! dan kekalkan Nama Orang Ulu!
Orang Ulu Culture Symposium held once every four years cast doubs on the integrity because of the ongoing controversy surrounding the Changes of the term “Orang Ulu” to “Lun Daya”
-Orang Ulu National Association (OUNA) Miri Chairman Peter Kallang revealed in the Borneo Post 19th Jun,2009.Pages 14 says,at the Symposium in Miri on 25-26th April,2009 the name change was proposed but the majority participants objected to it. As such it was not accepted as one of the meeting resolution and therefore he was perplexed that the name change “Lun Daya” was still used at the Official funtions at Gawai Dayak Malaysia Open House 2009 by TV 1 presenter last Saturday and the invitation at the Fifth Sarawak Culture Symposium on Thurday by Angkatan Zaman Mansang(Azam) a Govt Think tank .
-It look like the decision by the Symposium in May come to nothing. It seems that the name changes will go ahead with or without the consent of the people. What seem to be more important is that the agreement of a minority of Leaders. The decision is being bulldozed through without democratic consideration. This defying act of the Symposium Organiser also confirms the long held suspicion that the Orang Ulu Cultural Symposium is just a gimmick, as what was decided at the Symposium itself did not matter at all. No visible or tangible action has been taken as decided at this Symposium. Its targets and resolution were decided long before the event was organised, he said.
-He said the Symposium should be a platform for the people to have discussion and have some general concurrence on how to champion the cause of Orang Ulu. The Orang Ulu are a group of communities who are left far behind in terms of progress in economy, education, infrastructure, accessibility etc. Therefore he said the Orang Ulu Leaders should pool their efforts together in order to make sure that these communities whould be able to attain the progress and development benifitting the living standard of people living in a developed nation by 2020.
-Jimmy comments: This peoples that cause controvesy (TV 1 Presenter, Angkatan Zaman Mansang, YB Lihan Joke and Mr Ose Murang) should apologizes or make a public apology to the Orang Ulu Communities who was emotionally disturbs and bring confussion to the publics and others concerning the Communities name changes from “Orang Ulu to Lun Daya”.
-The name changes “Lun Daya” is improper, depriving, hurting, immoral and impolite reference to the Communities because of the negative simile ( U=Lun=Ulun) or its similar meaning differently to others language.
-Hopefully that such term “Lun Daya” will never be used again in reference to the members of the Orang Ulu Communities in future. The Objection by the majority is very clear and very regrettable. Thanks to all those who voices out their objection and comments.
