Dayaks lack element of smartness: Masing

“Politics within the community (Dayak), particularly in rural areas, is fluid until now because there is lack of the smart facor. And because of that they will listen to instigation and get manipulated by certain individuals” Dato Sri James Masing.
Who manipulate the Dayaks?
I think James is talking about himself, Jabu and his other bunch of friends – they traveled by helicopters to long houses during election, used Gov’t 4WD vehicles etc and pour in a lot of money to buy food and drinks and music and they spoke and lied to the Dayak in Batang Ai.
They lied and give Dayaks empty promises because they believed that Dayak lack element of smartness.
Dayak lack element of smartness
Only a Smart Ass like James can say such things about Dayaks. He believes he is the king of Dayak and can say whatever he likes – because he treated all Dayak as fools – just because PRS/BN won the Batang Ai By-election so James is smarter.
Those Dayaks that do not “blindly follow” Smart Ass James in politics are less smart. So there were 2000 over less smart Dayak voters in Batang Ai – all fools because they do not accept BN land policies, poor Mycard service, poor roads, no electricity, no hospital, no clean water, no proper mean of cash income through properly organized agriculture etc.
Focus on Delivering BN promises
James and Jabu should focus on delivering on their promises during the By -election. What happen to the land titles that are suppose to be given to Batang Ai resettlement people – the balance portion / parts of their land compensation.
It is wrong for the government to sell the long house to the Batang Ai resettlement areas for $80,000.00 per door when they never issue land title to the individual houses – just like in town.
Two years from now – the next state election, in Batang Ai the BN promises will still not be delivered – do you think that is because the Dayaks are less smart or it is just that James is the politician who manipulated the Dayak and getting their votes by manipulating them.
When did BN make the rural Dayak smart?
The radio programmes – most of it are full of BN propaganda. Message that lack meaning or substance and at best is causing confusion to the rural people. Things like – ” mina BN aja ulih meri pemansang ngagai Sarawak”etc.
James himself spoke on many occasions – but in all those occasion, instead of inspiring the Dayaks and show them the correct direction to take in personal development – he belittled them with LIES.
It is the duty of government to develop the state and its people – and the people need not feel that they owed the government for such development. But why is BN syaing that the people must appereciate their good work?
State Level Land Seminar in Bintulu
Why is James – as Minister of Land Development not a speaker at the Land Seminar in Bintulu? Is that an indication that his views are not important and that he is actually a puppet to Taib and Awang Tengah on land matters?.
We Dayaks are still looking for new ideas to ensure that NCR land owners really benefited from land development through direct participation instead of injecting their landed asset but do not hold any decision making power in the plantation company.
Why don’t James you answer that question first – rather than talking about Dayak are less smart because there raised too many questions that you are not able to answer personally..
Educated Dayak
Most educated Dayak do not want to see Dayak being lied to and being fooled- 45 years is enough. We have nothing more to call our own and yet James felt that by explaining the real issues and truth to rural Dayak is wrong.
No James – we are not liar like you and we do not have self interest – like holding political position and make personal money out of politics. We Dayakbaru are really concern that too much lies has been told to Dayak by BN Dayak Ministers.
Rural Based Party
It is good to know that PRS – and James is the President, is a rural based party. This rural areas would be the main focus of Dayakbaru in the next election – to educate then on the truth and what sustainable development is all about. It is about increase incomes, create value through their land cultivation, employ technology to increase productivity and to say NO to Dr. James model of land development – akin to pirate scheme.
Dayakbaru must dare to dream – and change we MUST.

Smart Dayakbaru(Ibans) in urban areas are not instigators. We are not going to tell lies and spread rumours as most of us have facts and figures. We are only conveying the information to them If this is their perception, then there will be ever growing number of Iban instigators in our state as more Dayaks will become smart.
Dayakbaru is only telling the rural folks about the current issues,based on what they have read, analysed,done or experienced, particularly the eventual beneficiaries of numerous development projects initiated by the govt.
Dayakbaru is only questioning the fact that the present Iban YBs/people in the govt are not doing enough to sufficiently protect the Dayak rights.
Daykbaru is not going to take advantage of uneducated Ibans by asking them for support whenever there is election.
Look at this case of the Seminar on State Land Policy in BIntulu. Smart Iban in urbans are naturraly asking why our YB is not even a speaker.
I would be glad if all of those who do not categorise themselves as instigators would hold a series of similar seminars at different places and times. It does not have toconfine itself on Land Issues only. I am quite interested on improving the number of Dayak/Ibans reaching tertiary education level complete with proper skills in this competitive world. That is why I belieive there will be more instigators in SWK…as perceived by some of our Iban YBs.

Masing blamed some dayak intellectuals for inciting the longhouse folks to hate and reject government policies as well as causing the dayak to be further fragmented in politics.
Who were these `intellectuals`? Masing did not clarify very specific on this.
May be he was right if he meant that the `intellectuals` were politicians and government ministers. The Business Ethics Institute of Malaysia (BIEM) in its survey revealed that politicians, business leaders and government ministers were ranked in the bottom three occupation in the country in terms of trust and intergrity.The surveyed said only 11 per cent of the politicians told the truth, while 62 per cent did not tell the truth. For the government ministers, only 20 per cent spoke the truth.
So now, we know who have been lieing to the people. Some ministers had made all sorts of promises to the people but at the end they could not deliver.

Agreed. There are many factors that caused this lacked of smartness among rural Dayaks which included lacked of education, uninformed of outside world, being poor, too pro-establishment, etc. Agreed that the can be easily manipulated, except that both side of the political divides continue to manipulate them the best they could.

Correct me if I am wrong but the so called intellectuals may not be necessary ones. But what is clear at least to me (being not that intelligent) – is that many better educated Dayaks especially those who are more exposed to development in towns and cities realise that Dayaks have been short changed. These individuals wishes to see the Government treat Dayaks people (their relatives who still live in longhouses) more fairly in many dealings such as on NCR for land issues and communities development. These individuals are critical of Dayak Government leaders whom they see as not doing enough. Lets be honest with yourselves, certainly many Dayak leaders including Dato’ Dr James aren’t perfect and as such should be open to positive criticisms.
To say that some Dayaks incite the people to hate and reject Government policies is entirely true. On the contrary many Dayaks want development by the Government to be increased and expedited. Their main problems are distinct disparities in socio economic as compared to other races. The Dayaks are lagging behind and if nothing is done toward uplifting their economic status, they will get more and more behind as time goes by.
By 2020 while most Malaysians have progresses well, Dayaks will continue to live like they were 30 or 40 years if not worst. Dr James know this better than anyone. He should ask himself, is the Government doing enough? If it is they how come so many Dayaks from every nook and cranny complain? Do we see many Malays complain for instance? Do we see the Chinese complain of poverty? Why Dayaks? Is it because they lack the smart factor? – I am totally lost here.

That is not true all, I mean it is not correct to blame the so called ‘’iresponsible Dayak intellectuals” for the community to lag behind. The truth is that the Dayaks have supported BN and Pehin Seri Taib. The Dayaks have been loyal to the Government and have never rejected Government policies. As a result the BN had won landslide victory in every election for many decades. But how they are still lagging behind now???!

Do you have to say this out loud just to reflect weakness in you and why not look for commonality rather than differences for the good for all DayakIban.
May I suggest , discard this kind mentality if you want unity in Dayak Iban community and stop from being selfish.

Its sad.
First, in the absence of massive congratulation in Borneo Post, Sarawak Tribune, Eastern Times, Utusan Borneo … Datuk James must have been desperate for recognition-and without being prompted, apparently explain his recent success at Batang Ai, to his successful effort at educating the rural electorate who did not have the “smart factor”. Sad that he did not get the recognition, and sadder still, that he had to make such disparaging statement, which can be construed as the truth by other Malaysians, and thereby re-enforce the negative image that people have-of the rural populace.
Second,one has to admit,in some sense – there may be some truth to his statement.After all,how could it be that people who have been given a raw deal in so many ways-for years (and I saw it in the eyes of the poor, seen along the Borneo highway within the Batang Ai area – enroute to Kuching),suddenly embrace promise of the same unstructured, unplanned, pockets of paltry (still)development money. By contrast,for people who had sacrifice so much for the greater good, they should be entitled, at the very least-free electricity, for the rest of their lives.Or just calculate how much SESCO has profited from the hydro,and take 10% out annually for sustainable social investment in Batang Ai-that would be a fair deal.The fact that Batang Ai folks fall for the same trick is sad, and serve to show there’s much more instigation and advocating to be done.
Third,compare with other the Dayak leaders holding position in government, he has a doctorate in anthropology, and is therefore expected to be in a position to understand the plight of his fellow Dayaks,and to champion their rights,to see around corners and rally the people for future posterity. To show leadership after the election: at the very least,I had expected him to call in the NGOs and those bloggers who highlights some of the errors of the government policy in Batang Ai, for a dialogue.His apparent self-indulgent remark, and less than concilliatory behavior towards the so-called instigators, had shown to my mind,the man is truly a typical politician,and therefore sadly-we Dayak is truly without leadership to look up to.
There’s glimmer of hope. It may well be that, its not necessary to look for a leadership. Perhaps, we all could be leaders in our right by our willingness to voice our concerns, and by our willingness to speak and write without fear. Perhaps, our effort today, will genuinely create future generations of Dayak with critical thinking, and if they are lucky, for them to acquire sufficient “smart factor” to fend for themselves. The thought gives me hope.

This sounds like an attempt by someone who had some unpleasant encounter with you, Doc. It could be a spark of jealousy. Now, he seems to blame you for all the empty promises or something that is working in his favour. Anyway, I like it at it shows that what you have done for the people in your area is at least heard by this bloke. I wonder how many persons have suffered some losses because of your influence, if any?. After all, you lost rather heavily in your last attempt. This means more people are getting something by going against you. So could a lot this bloke says you have caused people to lose and suffer?.
Well, what you and I have done positively to raise the socio-economic standing of the Dayak Iban?. This bloke is only expected to do more as he is in a better position to help us. We will do something within our small means to do the same as well. Fair enough, isn’t it?.
I know one guy from Rh Gelam, Sebauh, who says that there look like two groups of folks from that longhouse, the old and the young. This does not need further elaboration….except the young never says some negative thing about so called scum….
