Majalah Pemansang Dalam Jaku Iban
I am thinking of a serious magazine that is targeted to those above 21 years of age – that will create a new awareness of development in Malaysia under Education / Economy / Technology / Politics.
You know I am not a Communication graduate – nor is it in my career path except I strongly felt that we must give Dayak a true bench mark in development to enable them to make a good comparison between their development with the rest of Malaysia. I would need help from Dayakbaru expert on
- graphic
- layout
- journalism
- photography
- advertisement
- marketing
- (anything else that i missed – please add).
I want to see a joint Dayakbaru effort to make this “Tinting Tinjau Magazine” a success. This magazine should aim at giving the rural folk a true picture of development and also the progress of our nation, Malaysia.
What language(s) should we used for the magazine?
The main language should be IBAN – as a condition of approval. Do we need some translation into Bahasa Malaysia, Bidayuh and Kenyah ( or as you might suggest).
In that case we will need many sub-editors to edit the work.
What topic should we cover?
I will not want the magazine to be “entertainment” type. I would rather see the magazine to be informative – in the approach of Reader’s Digest or even National Geographic.
Can Dayakbaru please suggest the main topics. I have mentioned:
Education :
Local Universities facilities and offering, Overseas Education, Parenting, Adult Learning, Action Learning, Indigenous people, post graduate courses, Life Long Learning, Slow learner and even education for children with learning difficulties.
Economy :
Agro-business, Small Business, Small and Medium Industries, Investment strategies, Land Development, Starting Franchise businessor joining one, Project Management, Foreign Direct Investment, employment, export, import of goods and services. etc.
Technology:
We will focus on IT, agriculture and husbandry technology. We can also include technology that can be used in small business – packing of foods etc and those for manufacturing and food processing.
Politics
We talk about rights of Dayak, talking with past and present Dayak leaders on their perspective of politics in the country. We will try to recognize the service rendered by Dayak past leaders by giving them space to write their memoir etc.
We should be able to come up with 60 pages of Tinting Tinjau magazine to be produced once every two month intially for a year. Then we will review the business health of the magazine and make the neccessary adjustment.
What I would be looking for
I would be interested to look for investors to become shareholders while the magazine will be run by professional management team to make day to day decision.
Those with experience in producing magazine should make suggestion to avoid any repeat of their earlier mistakes in magazine production.
I would be looking for contributors and editors, photographers – all on part time basis.
I am looking for your participation – through your investment, suggestion, ideas, recommendation and article contribution that would be beneficial in the development of our community.
We MUST dare to DREAM and Change we MUST!

Dear Dr Brian,
Congratulation to you Dr. for initiating the idea of expanding, enhancing the Iban Language into the sharing of development to the Iban in particular. I am sure that this magazine shall become one of the pinacles and standards that we Dayak Baru shall look up into in our self development. We are proud to become one of the article writers soon.
Just for your personal information, I am a clean kampung boy whom with a naive approach to studies, had failed several decent attempt to succeed for the betterment of my family and my Iban people. I failed in several attemps with slippery steps prior to achichieving my educational status now, Master Of Science at the age of 45.
Once again, it is a great pleasure to realise that, another Iban Language Magazine is on the printing soonest.

Aku cukup setuju nggau Dayakbaru ti deka nerbit ka majalah ‘Tinting Tinjau’… Aku ngarap ka majalah tu nyadi majalah ti deka meri information ti base on fact,ukai nya informsation base on rhetoric n manipulate situation. Otherwise majalah kitai nadai beza ia nggau majalah-majalah ke sengapa kemaya hari tu.
Dalam kitai ka mai bangsa kitai Dayak berubah, kitai nang amat beguna ka reading meterial ti penuh nggau fact information, awak ka Bangsa kitai mayuh nemu pasal utai ke bendar. Ari nya, indirectly kitai ulih build bangsa ti berpenemu then we can become a “THINKING DAYAK”….
I know is not easy to we reveal a fact, but that what we should do… laban selama tu kitai selalu diperindang nggau information ti macam-macam, ditambah nggau sikap bangsa kitai ti jampat percaya nggau information & reading material ti controversial tang ukai ti berduduk ari fact ti bendar.. semua nya tau ngasuh bangsa kitai pandak runding serta selalu take action base on emotional.

Nya baru agenda mai anak kitai dayak maju, anang bejaku aja baka Dr. james. There are many other magazines of such nature, but none caters for the needs of Dayaks. They are either produced by:
1. Government ie tax payers
2. Political parties
3. Conglomerates eg fleet group.
The difference is that Tinting Tinjau comes from our pockets. The writers, editors, etc are NOT paid but we have to pay from printing and distribution. I am sharing this because this is the level we are starting now. Don’t get all the grand ideas of this and that – what come out will be our combined efforts. Kami nadai opis, nadai talipon, nadai secretary. We communicated only thru e-mails so far.
This is a Pemansang Magazine, not a news paper or political mouthpiece. Why in “Iban” and not other Dayak language – apoo sapa meh ke nulis bansa Kenyah? Bisi editor bansa Penan? In fact I would prefer it to be in English…nyamai nulis. But the target group is the rural people. Enggai pen enda, belajar meh nulis bansa Iban, unggal. Come on, anyone of you want to write financial advice in Iban? Financial advice in English, peda Yahoo Finance, pandi agi orang dia.

I am always fascinated by people’s achivement cause it inspires me very much and ulih nyadi ka perangsang ngagai bala anembiak. That’s y i think maybe should put articles ya ke bekait nggau pengidup orang ke bukai ti successful like some other magazines for example Reader Digest in Everyday Heroes or et cetera..I hope I can deliver my message very well here. Anyway, congrats! I am more than glad to work on part time basis for this magazine if u need me. Aram meh kitai sama bela bejalai sejalai awak ke tetap meruan sejalai enggau pemansang!

Maybe all of us should wait for the publishing license to be issued first.
Secondly, it will be good to see something different from the current Iban magazine in terms of its design, layout, paper quality, pre-press editorial systems.
The ‘look’ needs to incorporate the modern Dayak thinking, hence, the pua kumbu can go to the archive.
The major issue on IT, could be your printing location and the printer’s printing format. Most printer in KL will accept high resolution PDF to be FTP-ed into their main servers.
However, the logistic cost to send it back to Sarawak can be huge if the paper used is of higher gramme.
Who do you need?
1. Depends on the number of pages, a bi-monthly magazine will need at least 2 layout artist who knows the basic standard layout of a magazine – in term of its typesetting, guttering, etc.
2. You may need 4 SUB-editors in view of our 4 major columns.
3. One editor to ‘approve’ the works of your sub-editors.
4. Group Editor cum Manager – to get the whacking from the Home Ministry of course. To reply enquiries from the same ministry (a monthly task, probably).
5. Pre-press Executive – to get ready your raw material, PDF files, etc in its sequence and work closely with the printing dept. of your printer.
6. Logistic & Distribution – The man with the wheel to travel from Kuching to Brunei.
Position 1,5 and 6 needs to be at the same location of your printer. The rest can be mobile since you will be equipped with notebooks.
Position 1 needs a powerful PC with Adobe Creative Suite with Adobe Distiller installed (to produced your high resolution PDF fit for printing).

Note: I am just sharing my experience in setting up the Malaysian Today sports news in KL and Kuching.
And PLEASE use an eye-soothing font family (limit it to just 4 or 5 types). The New Times Roman, Arial and Verdana are things from the past.

Uchu Keling perhaps smelt rats….quite rightfully getting publishing license can be a nightmare esp. so if the applicant are known to be anti-BN. MDC proved a point.

Ila aku nulong betesau ngagai bala awakka sama meli magazine nya. It is timely to have our own magazine which can highlight the status of our economiy, political , socoal etc, ti jau amat tnggal ari bansa bukai. Briliant idea.
In principle a good idea .. but need some ground work.I hate to pour cold water on the enthusiasm, but I’m a realist. The danger is: once the magazine is started, it can’t fail-for its failure maybe construed as premature end of “Dayak Baru”,[akin to Batang Ai and Dayakism] The upside is obvious.
So it will be a good idea to spend time brainstorming and generating good ideas first, in addition to setting a physical and virtual contributors and editorial teams.
One Reverse Brainstorming point I throw in is the possible failure to attract sufficient readers for it to be economically sustainable.
The magazine will compete for readership from a relatively small and demographically diversed population.So its a realistic probability.
Here’s a few suggestions on how to reverse that:
Pre-select and research headline subject for each issue up to a few years in advance, because this defines the target readership and the magazines branding
1) Allocate space for other Dayak NGOs to publish their activity, to get readership from their followers
2) Provide abrideged online version for students and overseas readers, and Dayak scholars
3) Provide content to attract readerships external to the Dayak communities e.g Dayak recipes, Iban language,folklore etc
4) Institutional/private funding/sponsorship (e.g to carry DCCI message to the target group, provide space for church groups)
5) Keep it edgy (will likely be sanitized compare to the Weblog) with investigative reporting
6) Define the Tinjau Tinting brand carefully and then set out the tone, art work, editorial, layout,sequence, color scheme
7) Conduct market survey in a well defined market segment e.g using a free trial issue
9) Investigate feasibility of getting the “not for profit” certification/label and to actually donate % of the proceed in excess of the operating budget.
I grant that I may be thinking too much, in contrast with the more seasoned entreprenural mind. Hope the idea is useful.Got to go and look up Michael Buma or maybe John Postil to learn formal Iban.
DAMA managed to get Information Minister to declare open and be patron for that night. Perhaps DJBA can do likewise, to settle permit issue.

That’s a brillant idea. Since the main purpose is to inform orang kedirumah/menoa din what’s up and around. Maybe right now jabu is already planning to shoot us first. Coz he didn’t do anything or any cell brain and he won’t want this to happen the very character that deceived the ibans ever since. Anyway as he said he is still alive. ‘BN create helpless mentalilty for dayak’ is fenomenal and real. It is written under a hidden agendas and policies derived by the BN to manipulate and weakened the bargain power of the dayak.
In making matter worst to materialise the slogan above (as written by Dr. John), BN :
(i) continue the trend to promote the idea of appointing dayak Tuai Rumah/tuai kampung, penghulus, counsillors ,Pemancha and etc from amongst the illiterate group(buta huruf)in the remote areas.
This is a very straight forward strategy as those people are known to be ‘narrow and simple-minded’ and some are arrogant and abusive too. They are easily brainwashed and manipulated. This very group of people will be in the fore-front to carry out their duties in order to materialise all propagandas and slogans directed by the BN without doubts and questions.
To the dayakbaru , find ways to overcome this problems to avoid further damages to the dayak society. Tinting Tinjau should also include issues regarding selection and kriteria when recruiting those above as it could also contribute to our future development.
Selamat Gawai Dayak, ngenatai ka pengaga ati ngagai buah runding nuan DJB. Bala bukai tentu mega setuju enggau penemu DJB, tang setuju aja enda umbas enti kitai enda besaup besadung sereta meli.
Sekeda berita policy perintah, Gov. Dept, Gov. agencies enggau berita gov. contract sereta up to date development data patut mega bisi dalam nya. Berita politik tau tang manah enti iya neutral, awak ka ulih di anjung/beli opis/library perintah/sekula seluruh Sarawak.
Ba senentang rega tentu patut nitih ka pemayuh isi & kualiti, taja pia patut mega berunding ka sekeda pemacha/peminat ti diau di rumah panjai sereta pesisir.
Thank you for the constructive feedback and those offering assistance in many ways.I am seriously looking into having discussion with some dayakbaru – to structure the magazine content to deliver appropriate values to the Dayak communities and the strategy of sustaining the magazine.
Two thoughts that need further input
1)I am still looking for ideas on rural penetration strategy where the “price” of the magazine will not be an issue and
2) the viability (mechanism) of donating 70% of net profit from the magazine to set up Dayak Educational Foundation – particularly for (suggestion: to finance educational motivation talk, a systematic implementation of pre-school institution in rural areas, to recognise high performance Dayak students as encouragement to others or to provide monetary assistance to those pursuing higher tertiary education).
Please suggest what you think is right.
PS – those with HELPLESS DAYAK mentality – highlighting the problem of getting license/permit I appreciate your input. Dayak success is grounded on calculated risk taking and a high amount of energy generating ideas and solution and not how great BN is.

Oh ya..I forgot to mention to add another section in this magazine regarding Health and Environment. I believe U are passionate about environment as well because I realize the awareness is still not there and what are the effects of environment towards social life and health. Actually, I don’t want this magazine to be a political-driven magazine..but more to educating our society. Because through education only we can arise and waking up from our deep sleep. Awak ka kitai sama seati, sejalai..ngambi nadai pengidup siko2 ti agik jauh tinggal when people are running for the next flight..
For those who are good in graphic art – could you please work on the main cover – the concept should be rooted on Dayakbaru for the 21st Century progress.
Once ready we can meet and discuss the finer point.
I see Tinting Tinjau as a collaborative effort of Dayakbaru – money is not always the biggest problem – it is the “ideas” and a renewal of Dayak culture of “beduruk bumai” and “serumpu makai” to be transcended into progressive ventures into the 21st century.
I do hope you are with me to create this new “thinking Dayak” as oppose to “helpless mentality Dayak” waiting for others to solve our problem.

The idea to publish dayak magazine is good. But why give congratulation/ tahniah even before start to make a final proposal? The congratulatory messages from some of the members were really misleading, people thought that the magazines are ready for sale.
Kalau tak tau tak pe. If you know the difference between proposal & achievement that’s people called ball polishing, a person doing that must be graduated from the university of “AMPU”.
If I m the Boss, I will never employ kaki AMPU to work for the company because he will do nothing except AMPU Boss saja.
Kaki “Bantah” is opposite of kaki Ampu, but at least kaki Bantah will agree or stop making noise if there is pay rise. Kaki Ampu kompeni rugi pun senyum janji dapat bodek Boss….mudah-mudahan dapat nait pangkat at the expense of his colleagues who doing most of the job.
Buka mata buka telinga kalau mengaku diri Dayakbaru, janganlah anguk semua kata orang walaupun tak ada apa2 yang telah dicapai.

Fully support approach of strategizing, before deep diving. I will suggest to give a month of concerted business planning,not to only reduce risk but to understand focus/niche,that will give the magazines its soul-then give it a shot and improvise. On:
(1)Rural Penetration: like any readership profiling, the twin issue is affordability and content. Affordability-subsidize (via donor such as adopt a longhouse scheme) or provide 1 free subscription to select longhouse youth(s).Content-would be useful to mimize discrepancy between what rural readers would want and what message the magazine wants to send out,and stand for.Perhaps to consider highlighting one long house per each issue(1 page)-publish contribution from the longhouse/village in the form of its history,local heroes,farming news,interviews etc.
Since there’s already many cybercafe, even in rural areas, it will probably help to closely linked the physical magazine with an online version.
(2)Donation: the “not for profit” label is a powerful symbolism, to show that the magazine has a cause, and that should garner private and institutional support.It will also allow the magazine to be used for any donation drive.The safest(non-partisan,apolitical), and to remain coherent with Dayak Baru aspiration, is to plough some of the profits to Dayak education via established institutions/NGOs -or vide,as mention,part of Dayak Baru grassroots activism.
(3) Cover Page Artwork: one suggestion-to identify key elements of the “art work” that will be repeated in subsequent issue, to establish a brand. Another thought that comes to mind, is to either employ art theme thats totally void of anything “Dayak”, or in the other extreme to employ “Dayak” symbolism but in an entirely modern setting.Whichever way you choose to go, will have trade-offs; that I’m sure can be discussed later.
(4)Collaboration; what a magic word for most bloggers. Count on my support to contribute ideas-gratis! Once, readers-who may live way back in the ulu entigis, manage to submit article online to collaborate, I’ll call that a major milestone of participatory democracy !

Admin, I suggest you use Adobe Indesign from the beginning. (http://www.adobe.com/products/indesign/). Its features are built for press publishing and widely used by magazine owners. The Photoshop graphics will blend well with it. And, don’t worry about the CMYK thingy, the pre-press dept. of the printer will do the color separation for you.
On the issue of printing permit, look positively at it. “Tinting Tinjau” is the name of your magazine. It do not need new license, because, you can use existing printing permit just like JC’s PEGARI and SENAWAH.
You can ride on them, if licensing is an issue.
What matters is the printer and the publisher, and of course DD’s endless flow of material.
Personally, I am upbeat about this project, and I hope it is a magazine that we want to hold on to everyday.
In Kuching, there are so many Dayak players who have live and die with press publishing. They know the hardship of getting this project moving (with financing forming the bulk of the problem). The Dayaks in Kuching are those who runs printing machine (big ones like at Sarawak Press), runs the distribution dept. like in Borneo Post.. and I believe it is good to have them expressing their views and solutions to this project.

Congratulation to you for successfully registered Tinting Tinjau (Vantage Point). I hope this magazine will one day be “a must buy item” whenever shopping in the bookstore.
But one thing I would like to comment here is the front cover photo which I believed to be a picture of Mount Kinabalu, Sabah. I am feeling a little disappointed about this. I hope you can replace it with the picture of Gunung Mulu, Murud or any local elements from Swk.

Tinting Tinjau will not be limited to Sarawak alone. It will cover the whole Malaysia and even beyond when necessary.
Where ever there is Dayak we follow.
We will talk about anything and everything that will inspire and empower Dayak to take action to improve themselves. Example: success stories and real life.
The approach towards the magazine is to mediate to Dayak the “intention, Meaning and Transcendent” of what is going on around them in their daily life.
John Jamban – please get involved by contributing articles that may help improve the “mentality” of Dayak from being passive to active action.
