“Forest Concession (Rehabilitation and Development) Fund Ordinance, 1987″

The Sarawak Govt has passed a law called “Forest Concession (Rehabilitation and Development) Fund Ordinance, 1987″. The law authorises the Minister of Planning and Resource Management to impose and collect funds or fees from logging companies for each ton of timbers they extracted, I remember, it was RM1.00 per ton.

The funds or fees collected are for the socio-economic and welfare assistance to natives living within or around logging concessions of the companies. So educational assistance is included.

There used to be millions of RM collected but sadly, the funds are used as “instant noodle” projects dished out during election campaigns only.

I have not heard of this fund for quite sometime now. The law requires that there should be an annual account submitted to our ADUN Members every year.

While I fully appreciate donations made to our people for whatever purposes, we are also entitled under the said law to demand for the said funds from the Govt. as the timbers from which the funds were collected were extracted from our customary land.

The Orang Ulu Symposium is about to be held in Miri. I hope someone can raise this up at the symposium.

Look for Bruno Manser junior to pressure the government for the release of the fund.

Anyway, what happen to the money from the sale of Bruno Manser’s book(s)? Why he abandoned the Penan (punan) completely after became millionaire or he already satisfied with his mission- pretending befriended the natives for self-enrichment, now screw up!
