PKR’s Congress amend Party Constitution

Written by Dr. John Brian Anthony

There are some interest to better understand PKR political struggle and in particular in Sarawak. I am not an expert on PKR politics but I would like to share some of my PERSONAL views of development in PKR that is already public knowledge.

Enhance Democracy

PKR’s Congress on the 13th of June voted for its party constitutional amendment to enhance democracy and institutionalise progressive change in the party.

1. Direct elections for Divisional and Central Leadership position.

2. Change of terminology from “BAHAGIAN” to “CABANG” and “Cawangan” to “Ranting”.

What does it means to have a direct election of Central Leadership?

One of the main complaint in Malaysia is that our Prime Minister is being elected by about 2000 UMNO delegates. WE already know of “money politics” in UMNO – leaders buying votes of the delegates to get elected. Buying ONE THOUSAND votes is possible.

In PKR approach – if you want to buy votes and there are (assuming) 300,000 registered PKR members making vote buying almost impossible in order to win an election. The candidate must really be seen to have big leadership potential or those that has high performance rating from the members.

Members expressed greater satisfaction in getting direct involvement in electing their top leaders.

Bahagian and Cawangan

These are mere words that has been used extensively by all political parties. A change from Bahagian to “CABANG” and Cawangan to “RANTING” is more symbolic as PKR should have its own set of requirement and not to follow BN practices blindly.

For members – it set PKR apart from UMNO and other BN political component parties.

NEW PKR Chief for Sarawak

Again many potential PKR members has reservation on the PKR on going in Sarawak. In my view, those are little misunderstanding attributed to different perception on organization development.

From the current view, PKR is a National Party. George Chan is talking rubbish when he highlighted that PKR Sarawak is led by West Malaysian.

PKR is a national Party. The Party Central Leadership can appoint anyone whom they think served their needs at the present time. Shafie Abdal from Sabah is made by UMNO to be its Chief in one of the State in West Malaysia. If PKR action is wrong then UMNO action is at best at its worst.

George Chan must know that he is dealing with Dayakbaru – and not those that could be fooled by misinformation.

PKR is led by West Malaysian Malay say Sarawak BN

I can swear that Najib is not from my home town of Bintulu. I may add Najib is not from Baleh, Betong, Miri or Mukah either. Najib’s is from PEKAN in Pahang – is he not a West Malaysian Malay and is boss to all Sarawak BN Component Party. Why is BN Sarawak State leadership talking about PKR top leader being a Malay from West Malaysia?

1 Malaysia???

After 46 years of Malaysia – then BN finally woke up to the reality that Malaysian are not united as ONE. But just look at UMNO political struggle – for Malay, MCA is for Chinese and MIC for Indian.

Then look at PKR political struggle – it is justice for all Malaysian – that is truely Malaysian in approach.

BN is “racialist”

Instead of leaders for all Malaysian – Najib is leader for UMNO, Samy for Indian, Ong for Chinese, George Chan for Chinese, James Masing tried hard to claim himself as a Dayak leader. Jabu also wanted to be known as THE Dayak leader. The continuation of BN concept will create a mess by slowing development due to “racialist” community interest.

If not – how do you explain that the Natives of Sabah and Sarawak are the most backward when Sabah and Sarawak are the richest in natural resources. Where is the money? Is it not used to serve BN “racialist” interest?

Conclusion

1 Dream, 1 People, 1 Nation should have happened 46 years ago – in 1963 and not now. Who has been in power since than – definitely not PKR or Pakatan Rakyat.

Those slogan are just another “empty and meaningless” effort by a new Prime Minister to court Malaysian voters. We can see through the “hollowness” of such slogan.

But then we MUST all Dare to DREAM.

Sarawak PKR leader Augustine Liom wants Dayaks in Barisan Nasional (BN) to join Pakatan Rakyat to change the state government, so that native customary rights (NCR) to land can be protected.

  3. Dayak Observer on June 15th, 2009 4:44 pm

How about Ketua Umum Anwar Ibrahim? Is he elected? Dear Dayaks, find any means to establish new Sarawak based party. If MDC can’t make it then change to Sarawak Labour Party or anything to fight the BN. PKR is proven untrusted ally, look at the oil royalti demand, only 20% ! We should demand higher as 85% !!!!

udah gik lutor….nadai kitai ulih ngarap ka PKR…PKR madah ka dirik multi racial party..but it is obvious that it is monopolize by Laut, Cina and tambi…

Stop trying to spin this PKR issue. Aku nemu this is dear issue to you but fact is Sarawakian will never trust party outside Sarawak.

Amat they have logistik, pokok to support your dream but not Sarawakian dream. Anang Lenyau local identity baka sabah..our close brother.

Royalty minyak 20% ajak pia. We should ask for 85% that should be the target of Sarawak baru that should be our demand to begin with.

That why we need a strong Character, strong leader, the ability to comunicate excellently
above the other counterpart & of cos respected
    by others.

Gentlemen..this is our time! This is the only place we know and love.

Say NO UMNO AND GET LOST PKR .

Vote BN government out first through PR / PKR,MDC can be registered later when PK=PKR+DAP+PAS form the next Government of Malaysia.

We must see the urgency to rescue our NCR lands from being plundered more and more.

Why must we wait since an alternative vehicle is readily available.

  11. Papong Engkilu on June 17th, 2009 1:44 pm

PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail has said the party has identified a number of Sarawakians who can provide the “unifying element” in bringing about political change in the state.

Is Daniel Tajem, the Dayak firebrand of Sarawak politics, one of them?
    #
If Tajem join PKR, the party will be wiped out in the forthcoming state election.
    I am also resigning.

  12. Ya-Betol Yes-Man on June 17th, 2009 1:52 pm

PKR step is great step forward. Take U.S. for example. There are many rounds of primaries from all states to select candidates from both Republicans and Democrats with the final national election to elect the President by ALL VOTERS.

Live debate among rival candidates is common but highly important for overall ratings that can make or break your chances. Here, it is more like concert on demand with half-prepared minister still not bringing any tissue to wipe his foaming mouth while puffing against opposition.

Looking back to Malaysia and the version of democracy here….Adoi…Election Commission forgot that using ink on voter finger thumbs during election actually not provided by constitution…You got majority? Tell to Sultan and become new Menteri Besar. Next day give up but your brother also from same party can become Menteri Besar. How and when you got the majority doesn’t matter. As long you got the majority you got it. Just like you wanna enter VIP club, you got money or not? Got money? Come on in!

What is democracy and rule of majority when you can BUY your majority?

Now hug the China communist in form but in essence they are capitalist and on verge of becoming top economic powerhouse holding USD3trillion in cash reserves? Communist in China is good but anything inside Malaya is bad?

But one thing for sure in China despite they are not a democratic free country, they do hang to death those corrupt criminals.

Democracy-Communism hybrid form of government probably the next ideology for world to ponder. For Dayak, ah, what Dayak can think of? Sampai mati pun takut Taib.
