Party Dayak Iban

Unity Government – Malay Unity and Islamic Unity
While Prime Minister Najib Razak has been advocating for Malay/Muslim unity between PAS and UMNO in the spirit of 1Malaysia concept, is it wrong for Dayaks to call for Dayak unity between Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP), Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS), Parti Pesaka (which is now a branch of Parti Pesaka Bumiputra) and Sarawak National Party (SNAP)?
Dayak Be together in politics
William Mawan SPDP president, as reported in The Borneo Post today (27 June) called on the people (I am sure he means Dayaks, as they were the main audience in Gawai Ngiling Bidai in Kapit) not to allow themselves to be separated politically.
Instead they should be united and focused on the spirit of ‘segulai sejalai’ (moving forward together) to progress and develop with other races.
Moving forward together
To me moving forward together is not enough, we should be ‘segulai sejalai sepenemu’ (moving forward together in united voice). What is the point for us to move forward together if we do not share the same aspiration, the same objective, and the same destination?
SPDP is controlled by BIG Towkays
Anyway, Mawan’s call should be food for thought. But the only problem towards achieving this “segulai sejalai” is that SPDP is being controlled by big towkays whose objectives are dissimilar with those of the Dayaks’ aspirations. In other words, the non-Dayaks are the stumbling block to Dayak unity.
Many obstacles to Dayak Unity
No doubt there are also other obstacles to Dayak unity. SNAP tried it (Dayak unity), but the party failed. PBDS tried it, it also failed. Malaysian Dayak Congress (MDC) tried to revive the spirit of Dayak unity, but it was not allowed to be registered.
So what then should we do? Like the call for the Malay/Muslim unity, perhaps the Ibans should organise themselves first before talking about Dayak unity, so are the Bidayuhs and the Orang Ulu.
We should form our own political party – PADI
By this I mean, we should form our own political party before we can have a loose coalition in the spirit of Barisan Nasional or Pakatan Rakyat among the Dayak parties and call it Pakatan/Barisan Dayak Sarawak.
For the Iban, I am thinking of Parti Dayak Iban. In short, PADI and the emblem should be a paddy stalk to symbolize our farming and rural background.

What is the different when you cannot get MDC registered and how the hell you can get this so called PADI to be accepted by the ROS.
The intention to lump the entire Iban to have PADI is their political platform and merge with the other various Dayak political parties to form Pakatan Barisan Dayak Sarawak is not going to work to solve the disunity among the Dayak.
Even in the smaller faction of PRS, SPDP, SNAP there are already power struggle and what to say in this big family of Pakatan Barisan Dayak Sarawak, synonym to PBDS in short.
Mawan are actually calling the Dayak to give their undivided support and to stand united under the BN fold. He is urging Dayak to “Segulai Sejalai Sepenu” nuju pemansang ia ke udah ditunjuk ka perintah BN.
If “SPDP is being controlled by big towkays” so go to other Dayak political parties which are financially stronger perhaps PBB
Don’t waste time to form new political party as you have enough Dayak political party now.Do not follow the opposition as you will not go anywhere.
Manah kitai nguji ngaga parti baru. Anang cechangop nganti aja. aku rasa idea Joseph Tawie nya tau di kena. Kemaya ka ngaga PADI, udah bisi borang ari ROS, Mr Jetty?

OBJECTION to the used of paddy stalk as the emblem. Why like to be called the farming community, hence moving backward?
Iban is now in the corporate world with world class mentality.

Paddy symbol for the Dayak party is no longer relevant.
Why not relevant? It only denotes our immatured thinking/ mentality, very outdated, knowing that most of the young generation never have the experience in planting paddy. Secondly, it will not bring any good fighting spirit/ ingredients to a political struggle. No omphhhs!
The spear and shield also not suitbale for party symbol because it depicts our BELAYA diri sebilik!
I think we got to make the party symbol very simple but giving more PUNCH!
Form our own political party? If we can kill or dissolve the 3 mosquito parties (SNAP, SPDP & PRS) that’s fine. Otherwise, the Dayaks will further disintegrate into minority groups taking into account that any existing parties have certain percentage of Dayak supporters. Few dayaks may have joined PAS & UMNO (state level).
If we are not allowed to form a new party, the best option is to join PRS, give full support (financially & people power) to JJM senior- to make the party become dominant among the BN when Taib era expired at his dead. If we are in big numbers we can have better political bargaining- ask for more seats in the dayaks areas which have been denied by the present BN leadership.
The previous seat delineation was only increased the number of malays/melanau seats at our expense (which is not propotional to the ethnic ratio), that was/ is purposely to deny the dayaks chance of winning majority seats in any election.
Hopefully, in the near future, if we were majority in one political party (by joining PRS) we have more say to demand for more seats in the dayak majority areas when Uban steps down at his last breath. Then we request for open fight (like in the seventies), use own political symbol instead of using Dacing.
When we are united in one political party we can do things at our advantage/ liking- Bersatu kita teguh bercerai kita rubuh, semua kita tahu tapi sengajar buat tidak mahu tahu?

Judging from 100s of postings on similar subject, this has got to be the most difficult issue and yet the most important to address. Don’t have the magic wand, but will speak my mind.
Given that there are only about 1 million Dayak, its hard to see how there can be that many political parties (PBB,SPDP,PRS,SNAP,PKR,PAS,DAP,SUPP) who would most certainly proclaim to champion the Dayak cause – when & if any of the parties has a Dayak candidate standing for election, in any of the Dayak-majority constituency. No point in lamenting the sad state of affairs. Lets take this as a given, with no easy solution.
Lets have no illusion: Dayaks who have been loyal party members including politicians of these respective political parties will not want to change political party – naturally there would have been too much vested interest for them to change. Unless, the stronger party is willing to absorb party loyalists from the weaker party and provide them meaningful role over and above that they can aspire to get on their own, there will be no “consolidation” as Broken Shield suggest. This the true/pragmatic view of politics and politician.Nice if Barisan Dayak Party can materialised – but, not likely.
Meanwhile, there are many political issues that are inherently Dayak: poverty, land, culture. And these issues will naturally get diluted or lost in the priority rankings, when championed in any of the “multi-racial” parties (all those in the list!) – given that there are not many Dayak politician(s) who is independently wealthy and has a war chest to win electoral seat(s) without sponsors.
The political outlook for Dayak remains bleak at this time. BN has proven to be toxic to Dayak interest. PR remains to be seen-need further uncompromising analysis of their political culture. MDC-never mind the ROS-the protem committee silence, speaks volume of its -as dead as buried-fate.
This leave perhaps a long term movement,to change the very fabric of Dayak thought so their political wants can be galvanised into actual political strategy. I did pose a question as to why Dayak would want to unite -for any purpose – and the feedback was quite mooted. So that has added to the pessimism.
Personally: I take it very slowly.Change will come, when it comes. Cross the bridge when we get there, but meanwhile, lets take a walk – and continue to talk.
