How much are you investing in Amanah Saham 1Malaysia?

Written by Seliong ak Wau

Everybody knows how Amanah saham works: Place in RM1,000 or so, and wait till the end of the year to get your “dividend,” i.e. if that Amanah Saham makes money. If it doesn’t then wait for another year.

The only thing my blood brothers have in the rural area are their NCR land. No title, no legal claim so their mode of investment is to slash, burn, plant and pray. The Ibans survived for thousand of years when land was abundant. When the farm failed, they can rely on the fish in the waters and wild meat from the jungle.

Today, the NCR is being “developed.” The Ibans & the Dayaks as a whole, are “invited” as shareholders. The concept is similar to Amanah Saham 1 Malaysia. This is how it works:

My blood brothers have the land. The big companies have the money and management skills. They became “joint-partners.” If the partnership makes money, the “management” pays the dividend. It it does… if it doesn’t, well too bad. But unlike 1Malaysian Unit Trust, I cannot withdraw my investment i.e. my land. So for the next 30 years or 60 years, that is depending on whether the partnership is being renewed, the partnership may or may not make money. Read more

Dayak Endowment Board

Posted by: KunchitMunchit

The Bornneo Post reported today

Quoting Dayak Ministers as saying that (Penang CM) Lim’s suggestion to set up a Dayak Endowment Board(DEB) to help poor members of the community is “inapplicable to Sarawak and merely a political tactic”.

Dayak Assemblymen condemn the proposal

Two Dayak assemblymen even condemn Lim for the proposal, saying that it amounts to looking down on the Dayak community and to the effect that rural Dayaks are not that poor as to warrant the setting up of the DEB.

To me, these Dayak Ministers and Assemblymen are just too ashame of the state of their rural people and are in a state of denial. Denying the facts and the truth. By being so, who will suffer and remain helplessly poor.(!?)

DAYAKBARU COMMENT

“I was asked to comment on the Dayak Endowment Board by Borneo Post MIRI reporter. My responsed was very positive towards this concept as it has been used successfully in Penang. The Pakatan Rakyat governmnet in Penang gave $500 to a poor family to help them out with their finances while they sought out they economic standing. Read more

Could PRS champion more of the Dayak problems?

Posted by: Empelesik Sungai

Free Tuition on using sirat

For a while I thought we are another PRS, placing unnecessary focus on a non-issue “sirat.” In fact I’ve thought PRS should provide free tuition to Hadi Awang on the correct way to wrap the sirat, and then probably getting HA to “Halal” its use – end the controversy.

PRS – where are the other Dayak issues?

Other than an “embarrassment” his comment has not resulted in any loss for me. And that is why I don’t understand PRS’s stand considering the gravity of many negative issues affecting the Dayaks.

1. Why are Sarawak roads in deplorable condition still?

I would like to hear PRS firing DCM Jabu: “As the Infrastructure Minister, why are the roads in such deplorable conditions? When will the trunk road from Kuching to Miri passable by a Kanchil?” Each time I drive, I have to send my kachil over for checkups. Where do I send the bills to? Read more

Dayak “Sirat” Stigma

Posted by: Iban Abroad

Not a PAS supporter

I am not a PAS supporter or either Hadi Awang’s follower. But the issue of “Sirat Stigma “attract my attention and  the overeaction of the PRS/BN group trying to make use of the minor issue, exploiting it into national issue and turn it into racial issue. If the “Sirat Stigma” is a big issue to all Dayak or insulting to Dayak, why are Iban in LA and other Iban throughout Sarawak do not condemn it through SDNU instead using PRS and  only a small portion of  Dayak are with PRS.

What did HA want to say”

If HA call Iban “Agi Besirat” and it indicates that Iban is stupid how do we response  to Sarawak Chinese call ing Iban “Laking / Lakkia” or stupid everyday is that not a big issue? Why no PRS  members condemn it. PRS with anak Datuk Sg do not condemn it maybe because they are one of the same kind. Read more

Modus Operandi of Dayak Land Grab by BN Government

Posted by: Meramat Tajak

TAHABAS

Re-posting. Good to hear TAHABAS is taking some action – at least to expose to MalaysiaKini. Sad if that’s all the assistance/advocacy that the 60 longhouses will ever get.

Dayak denied Land Ownership

For, as I noted below, LCDA and Dr James office, supported by Sudarsono (Land and Survey), will continue to execute the same strategy of denying legal ownership to NCR land by withholding issuance of land title, and then to act with impunity in the way it grab timber (via proxy),and later, I won’t be surprise at all – maybe the legal land title itself(via shareholder buyout).

“Overwhelming response”?

Of course Borneo Post will aid and abetted the grab by releasing “overwhelming response” when again, the NCR land owners, never get anywhere near the legal agreement, much less signing the Memorandum of Consent. Read more

Open Letter to Gan Tee Jin and any other socially responsible Oil Palm Plantation company in West Malaysia or elsewhere, seeking to develop NCR land WITH native owner.

Dear Gan Tee Jin,

Of course if the news appear in Malaysiakini, it tend to carry truths that the BN government often prefer to keep from the public.

Its commendable that on reading the news, you choose to find out more about the real situation in Sarawak. I hope you find the honest reaction from Dayakbaru readers useful for your corporate business planning. Allow me to add a few more personal insights.

Konsep Baru is Systematic land Grab

First,if you choose to establish your venture through Konsep Baru, you will be a party to the systematic land grab by the state against the interest of the poor Dayak natives. Read more

Dayak Disunity is caused by “divide and rule” BN approach

Posted by: CharcoalArt

Dayakbaru comment:

“So what? What must we do to create unity among Dayak?” We must get on top of the divide and rule paradox. WE must have the mental strength to solve this situation and end up being the benefactor.

“SPDP press conference on 18 July was that Mawan was blaming the Dayaks for the disunity”

According to Mawan the culprits are Dayak Scorpions. Jetty had tried to prove Mawan wrong by using Chinese denominator in all failed Dayak parties. But I think Mawan’s so called “Dayak scorpions” statement is not necessarily meant for Dayaks only and if read between the lines it should Include Laut, Melanau, Mamak, Tambi, Cina Chantung, etc.. Sustainable Longhouse Economy

Posted by: Seliong anak Wau

Preamble

Last month was the Gawai Dayak; festivities in any longhouse. Today, visit the same longhouse; the youths are not seen. There are either the very young, or the old. Investigate further and most parents would inform you that their sons and daughters have gone to work. The lucky ones are employed as government workers but the majority are in various peninsula states.

Parents are supported by children’s wages

That is another significant shift in our longhouse economy. Most parents are now supported by their children’s wages. Monthly remittances help to pay for their maintenances. Read more

Open letter to Tun Mahathir

Posted by: Bujangsinungenang

Source: http://www.malaysiakini.com/letters/109151

Dear Tun Mahathir,

I refer to Tun’s article entitled ‘Walk in the Shoes’ written on the July 20, 2009 on Tun’s website. Allow me to share my opinion with regards to what had been written by Tun.

2. I believe the questioner perceived that non-Malays are feeling very oppressed and disappointed with the “injustice” against them in Malaysia (by a government that is controlled by Malays).
The non Malays have strong reasons for feeling very oppressed and disappointed with the injustice towards them in Malaysia. In fact non-Malay bumiputera specifically the Orang Asli and Sabah and Sarawak bumiputeras also share the same feeling as they too were not given the same treatment as the Malays whereas they are the original inhabitants of this country. How many non-Malay bumiputera were accepted into the government sectors and government owned corporations like Petronas? Read more

How Dayak can benefit from Corporate Governance

Posted by: Seliong Ak Wau

Background
Before the mid 90’s the word “corporate governance” was non-existence. Malaysia has adequate laws with numerous supervisory bodies and enforcements. But the aftermath of 1997 Asian Financial Crisis saw the emergence of new set of public accountability in the corporate world.

As a trading nation, Malaysia saw the significance of corporate accountability and thus towards the end of the 90’s era, “corporate governance” was emphasise as much as it was expected. Read more

LCDA is not a responsible enough organization

Posted by: Empelesik Sungai

My comment:

Without going into the details, there is one plantation near my village that have been operating for 12 years. So far there have not been any dividends paid. The last was just 2 years ago, and that was “advance against dividend.” The reason was that the JV did not make money.

That “advance” was paid as the result of the locals blocking the access road to the plantation and then made a police report. Read more

Dayak should forge new thinking

Posted by Meramat Tajak

The tragic-comic of Dayak politic is way too much to resist : lets form a new political party of scorpions, snakes and frogs then, shall we ?

Meaningless to apportion blame

Seriously, Jetty is travelling a well worn paths. To me, its also meaningless to apportion blame.

As a political outsider, I’m more interested in ideas and smarter move to unite the Dayaks for a collective purpose.

Dayak Signature Weakness

That there has been not much new thinking on how to forge new unity, is our Dayak signature weakness.

Compare to other community: Indians, Malays, Chinese-Dayaks appear so pathetically incapable of acting collectively for any sustained purpose except within the confines of a longhouse, and for short term objective. Read more
