Dayak Leaders to work crossing party lines

Posted by CharcoalArt

Admittedly there are Dayak leaders who stood and spoke up for the Dayaks.

These leaders include Leo Moggie, Linggi, Ujang,Tajem, Salang, Mawan, etc. I have seen with my own eyes and heard with my own ears the exact words they uttered – succinct and uncensored in the presence of PM (one time Mahathir and another time Pak Lah) as well Sarawak CM.

These were during DCCI, SDGA, symposiums, etc. Linggi admitted that he had been given the opportunities, like timber concessions, etc. and thus stated that he himself is an example of capable Dayaks if only given the opportunity (we all know who Datuk Linggi is; probably the current most successful Dayak in the universe). Linggi wants the Gov’t to give the Dayaks share of the “fruit of mardeka”.

My point is I am very encouraged when such Dayak leaders as mentioned care enough to fight for us all. These are some shred of caring attitudes and loyalties to the community. Unfortunately we have not seen many changes yet despite years have passed.

But to be honest we can’t expect changes come overnight; not unless you are the CM (may be the new CM will support Kapit/Sibu road).

Has Dayak’s Leaders done much to help Dayak

While I am encouraged I also regret to see the lukewarm responses of other Dayak leaders to pursue such Dayak agendas. They have done much to help the Dayaks as well – in their own ways within their capabilities, please don’t get me wrong but they seem not to support drives & policies which could drastically elevate the Dayaks economically.

Greater Progress – above Minor Rural Project (MRP)

I am not talking about having a little bit of education, job, car, house, etc. Progressive Malaysians are concerned about greater progress example: tall building like Wisma Pelita is greater progress if compared with asking handouts to renovate your longhouses.

Distribution of Wealth

It is about the distribution of wealth that could reach the Dayaks. There must be fair and honest intention by the “power” instead of continuously treating the Dayaks like fools with election incentive and subsidies, rebates, assistances.

The Dayak NEEDS list is already DONE! - Work crossing party lines

What Dayaks want had been listed down, no need to re-think tank or re invent the wheels. What Dayak leaders need to do is to unite in one voice crossing party lines to push for these agendas.

Failing which (failing to unite), the Dayak race will remain to be backward and being looked down by other progressive Malaysian societies. They will never be able to catch up.

This will not be a healthy situation.

    Datuk Amar Temenggong CharcoalArt,

Apparently your aurguement is going through a vicious circle. To put it bluntly, Taib is putting a brake for any Dayak leaders (past or present)who are figthing for Dayak cause.Things may only changed when Taib gone back to a permanent world or when he retired.

    CA,

I’m getting a bit more impatient these days, even as I want to maintain neutrality with objective and well-thought out postings.

It hards to be break with the past, but that maybe the only viable prescription that will work, given that the issues affecting Dayak, which you yourself know too well, has been going on,ever since.

What does breaking with the past entail ? I leave that for discussion. I will only postulate: that the good Dayak leaders themselves, may secretly wants a complete overhaul – so they themselves will have more space and be more empowered. Those who are binded to the system, through patronage, will naturally fight with tooth and nail to keep their piece of the action.

Always enjoy your balance and rational views. I can’t wait to hear, your wise words on “breaking with the past”.

  3. Papung Engkilu on July 3rd, 2009 10:16 pm

CA,when did Linggi utter such words? Only when he was sidelined by Taib? What has DCCI done to the majority of the poor Dayaks? DCCI only benefits a few Dayaks only.

    Aban Sui,

Our whole body gets sick because one bloody as#$@* who insists to have constipation!

    Meramat,

Enjoy reading your comments in this forum. I absolutely agreed with you on the wish to have a complete over haul. Can’t really write properly thought out comments now, am currently overseas, it’s dawn now local time but broad day light in M’sia, my body clock is still having trouble to adjust, but I will just stick up my comments here as the thought trickle in – please don’t expect much from a sleepy but awake fella, sitting up on bed typing into a laptop – LOL

Breaking away from the past – if you wish to put it that way. While it’s quite true that Dayak leaders have been “hopeless” for at least 2 decades – but to be fair to them, they weren’t/are’t the real bosses. What they had wished for could not be achieved. The Ming Court affair was part of these long over blown symptoms. Leo Moggie stated in 1987 “anyone else but Taib”, that appeared as headline in Sarawak Tribune – why am I feeling a bit uncomfortable mention the past? hmmmm…may be it’s the thought that much effort have been made after 1987 to try to work together in Sarawak. The unfortunate thing is that politicians are survivors and the victors can never feel secured unless they put in place strategies that either punish the prodigal sons or to ensure that they continue to be in pathetic states.

If you look at the current Dayak politics, we are really in helpless/hopeless state – never before in our times that Dayaks are so beaten up, timid and weak as they are now. I had mixed with Dayak leaders, YBs, etc. to be able to know how “scared” they are. So to speak up for Dayaks for things which their people aren’t happy about should be understood as extremely difficult.

Past is history, people learnt the lessons and cannot forget the pains. People who had been beaten up but well fed become cowards and willing to be partronized. On the contrary a suicide bomber would be someone who has only his underpant.

Who are we? Cowards or suicide bombers? How many are really that brave to be the latters? Change we must some Dayak Baru cried – that’s noble as the “enough is enough” has been identified decades ago and the situation had becom worst today.

But the braves of Dayakbaru are struggling in resources and look up to PKR as their “strong” ally and perhaps to provide the funds in the next election. Scenarios like in Batang Ai will be repeated if an election is to be held soon. There will be a lot of excitement. But is this the best Dayakbaru can do?

As you may have read, most of my postings here are for unity. I don’t wish to see Dayaks at each other throats due to political differences. Dayaks are actually share identical wishes and aspirations about the community.

I want to be part of the Dayak mass. I am for consolidated agendas and not for mere election campaigns.

I wish to seek inner concience and sincerity. It’s only out of this that real change can happen.

I put high hope on Dr James, TS Jabu, etc. to lead Dayaks to higher level, away from our current lagging behind. I wish people like them to think for our future generation socio and economic well beings.

    PE,
If you must say so about DA Linggi, then you should realise which came first. Fall out happened after certain actions. We are thankful that DA cares for the community, he tries to contribute the best way he can – therefore as for me, he has my respect.

About DCCI – forgive me for saying but I beg to differ. You have to understand what DCCI is all about. DCCI is the only Dayak Chamber of Commerce in the world where Chinese has one in every town. DCCI will try to help its members but it cannot guarantee success. Members who are mostly Dayak businessmen and professionals could have stronger voices if they wish the chamber to speak up for them. DCCI should not be held responsible to help the poor, that’s beyond it’s capability.

    CA,

After the fall out DA Linggi continue to support Taib & PBB. If he is man enough he should leave PBB and openly criticise Taib like Tun M or Tengku Razalieh.U support DA Lingi simply because he is from your hometown Kapit.
In respect to DCCI its a great letdown. IT is being used by the greedy Dayak to “cheat” federal leaders to enrich themselve.

    Shhhuuukung you brother!

Many good things Jugah & the family did to Malaysians but unfortunately very little thing that they do good to the Iban community. Maia Gawai Dayak, nadai entu ngabas pendiau Iban ke seranta, jolly ngagai menua London. What they have today were/are at the expense of Iban community!

It looks like the dayaks are kena tepang. There couldn’t be no more creation of interpreneur Dayaks coz that would mean stiff competition for businesses for those who are already ahead. We must remember that we are also competing with the Malay, Malaynow whatdon’t, Tonguyong Mak Nok etc especially when the IM concept is introduced. We have been barking for IM for the past 45 years and the campaign seems a gimmick. The past and present leaders were/are awared that IM is very important. I wonder if we could solve this to the bottom!
There’s seemed less fighting for the dayak interest except like a dog barking at the mountain. Some races are privileged to monopolize the top departmental posts in the State. Do you think any other race can take over as the State Jangan Kerja Rajin Director? No way coz the Tonguyong people are very solid behind it and the Malaynow leader survive on that.
