Dayak “Sirat” Stigma

I am not a PAS supporter or either Hadi Awang’s follower. But the issue of “Sirat Stigma “attract my attention and the overeaction of the PRS/BN group trying to make use of the minor issue, exploiting it into national issue and turn it into racial issue. If the “Sirat Stigma” is a big issue to all Dayak or insulting to Dayak, why are Iban in LA and other Iban throughout Sarawak do not condemn it through SDNU instead using PRS and only a small portion of Dayak are with PRS.
What did HA want to say”
If HA call Iban “Agi Besirat” and it indicates that Iban is stupid how do we response to Sarawak Chinese call ing Iban “Laking / Lakkia” or stupid everyday is that not a big issue? Why no PRS members condemn it. PRS with anak Datuk Sg do not condemn it maybe because they are one of the same kind.
Why politicize Dayak “sirat” ?
Why should we politicize this issue and yet thousands of important issues related to Dayak has not been addressed and allow to passed us by?
An another point of view, I can see that Dayak is once again being used by third party to gain support for their racialist based BN government and also at the same time to cover their thousand of wrongdoing and discrimination toward Dayak.
Divide and Rule
There is symptom of Divide and Rule here by BN. Please Dayak check yourself, remember that we have been through so many bitter experience and costly lessons in the pass. We have been made to split politically and led by and lead by minority people.
Is condeming each other good politics?
I cannot imagine what happen to Dayak in future, if both Dayak from BN and opposition (PR) start to condemn each other with their own negative issues.
Entulu – dropping the term Dayak is not over yet and so are other issues
PRS issue on Joseph Entulu open call to drop Dayak identity is not over, 300 Cases of Dayak Court case on NCR Land is not over, Dayak rights to NCR land was extinguished to become state land is not over, Dayak Christian being stopped to use the word Allah is not over, compensation in Lubok Antu Wong Irup is not over, land title for resettlement for Iban in Lubok Antu is not over, development promise by BN during building the Wong Irup Dam is not over and thousands of discrimination issue on Dayak are not over.
Should PR burn BN component party flags because many things are not solved by BN?
How about if the opposition start to make use of all the above issue and burn BN, UMNO, PRS flag? What happen to Dayak then?
To Iban in Lubok Antu, please it is better we condemn the local issue that are not being address by BN and that is directly link to the need of our people in Lubok Antu. Which is why “sirat” is not a big issue. IWe are being distracted by BN from the real issues that BN cannot solved, especially by PRS elected representatives.
I am not Offended by Hadi’s Statement
Nothing HA said make us Dayak feel so offended by his calling Iban LA ‘agi besirat’ .Instead we should be proud of ourself being “besirat” and the direct descendent of the famous head hunters.
PRS make mountain of mole hill
For PRS there is nothing to make the party to react voilently and behave like crazy on this issue cos there are thousand of other important issues discriminating Dayak. Yet that NOBODY is helping us , no not even PRS.
We can see HA is disappointed at the situation in which Iban LA do not support PR. It means while PR is trying to help Dayak from being discriminated by the presentState government, the Iban of LA cannot see the truth.
BN parties trying to stir anti PR / PAS sentiment
On the other hand, we can see that the third party is trying to make use of Iban of Lubok Antu throgh PRS exploiting the issue. Their intention is to continue to split and lead Dayak at the same time trying to gain support from Dayak to support their apartheid government, cover their wrongdoing toward Dayak, trying to hide their discrimination toward Dayak, particularly at the time where they need Iban votes in next election to avoid being toppled by opposition.

I am 101% absolutely agree with you Iban Abroad. A true sense of mentality of an intellectual, in your posting.
Contrary to PRS members or rather a BN cronies posting, who are only good at ‘apple polishing’.
Among their obejctives are:
(i) Diverting real and big issues from a small
one are their main objective.
(ii) Planting a seeds of fear amongst the
dayaks .
(iii) Instilling the ‘fool mentality’ to the
dayaks so that they are easily carried away
by empty promises.
(iv) The dayaks are BN loyalist and will not
survive if otherwise.
The burning of PAS flag is one example of an act of immaturity shown by PRS Youth. Doesn’t it? Nationalised a small ‘sirat issue’ to create racial disharmony so as to gain support as they know very well that PR are getting more and more support from the dayaks.
I do not think the people of Lubok Antu are easily fool by their (BN/PRS) dirty trick. I know you LA are wise people. My ancestors was originated from LA and I am sure your mentality are like mine too.

HA has commented.You do not need PHD to really see and understand this.Having said that, well, politician are politician and they have their own interest and it is normal that their response and reply will be geared toward a more political approach in nature….
Just keep remembering what YB tulu said in Sibu to remove and kill/remove the Dayak’s name .
It is so simple to provoke and exploit Dayak .
Are they (BN MP/ADUN)trying to divert a simple
mind attention from what they have done,damage to their own Dayak Community.
Let me remind us all .Are the Dayak leaders (Dayak BN/Opp MP/ADun) sincere in helping their own Dayak Community.The answer is inside you and may I suggest that look around & inside yourself before we all decide to do things that is more damaging now and the future.

Apa yang “tersirat” dlm kenyataan HA ada kebenarannya. I guess he sopke the most true and sincerely of what the Peninsular think about us. It is just that UMNO/BN never said it before because the fear of losing support but HA have noting to loose. Most of us sarawakian especially those who lives in the rural still do not have the privilege of acquiring latest information on current situation. The only news they received was probably from the TV or radio which are all bias. Consider what HA said as a wake-up call that we must change. We had just spend RM300 million on the least needed building instead of spend the cash on the road construction, water and electricity supply to the rural folks.
Yup – have heard arguments from both sides. However, I still feel that HA didn’t have to use the “sirat” term to talk down to Ibans. If he is not happy that Batang Ai voted for BN, he could say it in many other ways. Why talk so degrading to another race? Wait until he becomes your Government, he will not think twice to degrade you again!
If we keep politics asides it would be a matter of principle and dignity. An insult is an insult regardless where it comes from.
We have other stinging and degrading terms like lakieng or lakia which literally mean “pala ikan pusu” signifying stupidity of longhouse natives; this term has been uttered since Chinese first landed on our land but as Dayaks get more and more advanced we seldom hear chinese use the word now. That’s the point, if you let people trample upon you and you accept, they won’t stop. If a chinese guy refer you as lakia now, you could also tell him off on his face.
Switching back to politics – despite some many “problems” faced by Dayaks, the emergence of PR to Sarawak is yet another turning point of pitting Dayaks against Dayaks. When Dayaks are about to be streamlined and unitied in BN, PR enticed some Dayaks to fight as opposition. The statement that Dayaks have been made used of by certain parties has some truth in it – if you look at it rationally and be honest with yourself.
What do you gain out of it in end if not weaker Dayak voices and disunity? Will it solve NCRs, Dayak lagging behind is socio economic, etc. I bet you it won’t.
You see now even Dayakbaru website is cozily linked to a PAS website. Never before in history that Dayaks are so friendly with PAS, not even when PBDS was an opposition. What is going on?

Nama utai bangat dikemalu ka enti dikumbai orang “bersirat”? Tu endang sigi pakaian asal bangsa kitai.
Sepatut ia, kitai mesti nunjuk ngagai semoa dunya, bangsa orang ka “bersirat” di menoa Sarawak diatu cukup pintar, pandai, landik lalu bepelajar enda ngeransi ngapa, pandai berunding.
Pama agi enti sida ka Tuai berunding ngadu ka mayuh agi pemansang ngagai bangsa Iban/Dayak ngica ka orang enda besema ka kitai ka “bersirat” enda nemu reti leboh bepolitic. Kapa ka pura-pura bejako ngaga diri ngering ka bangsa Iban tang ka bendar minta sukung rakyat takut ka bangsa diri empu enda rindu ka sida/party sida agi. Nama di ke nangi, Iban diatu mayuh bepelajar, majak mayuh. Enti utai ka ngemabo nya, nemu orang meda, mikir ni intan, ni kaca.

Agree with you. Insult is still an insult but personally I took it positively. There must be a reason behind all this. Current political scenario I hope will benefit the people especially sarawakian. We had been left behind in term of almost everything compare to the peninsular. The truth is that I do not know whether PR will be much different or better compare to BN. But we can see now that those in power had been force to work much harder than before. Weaknesses had slowly been identified and improve. If we keep on fighting we might see a promising future for our next generation in term of education, employment, health, water, electricity and road facility especially to those who do not have the privilege to enjoy it currently.

I totally agree with your statement. I don’t like Pas conquer Sarawak. Sigi patut pun kalah bak Batang Ai. I don’t mind other opposition parties grab Sarawak. But PAS. Thumb down.
Ha..ha.. which is categorically pertinent: “The term Dayak obliterated” or “Dayak still using the sirat?” I don’t like PAS one single second, but I am NOT at all offended by his sirat thing. Sirat, so what?
Want to go on mud-slinging with Hadi Awang? Okay, here is one; “we use sirat, but you, you, you fellows suck the fumes from the fresh cow dung.” That doesn’t sound nice, isn’t it? Hadi would probably say, “Eh, I don’t that. It’s the youths, those drug addicts.”

I tried the sirat before and it kept falling down. Then I tied it again over boxers. That did it when I used the pin to secure the sirat. Nice feeling, airy. Hadi you should try it sometimes.
Now be serious. Why are the PRS people making so much noise about the sirat? Because they were offended, that after so many years in power, BN still cannot afford to cloth the Dayaks properly. Got it?

Just petty issue, why trying to aggravate the situation?
A political party is making noise and pretend to be the champion of the Ibans, but it is not.
We have so many other important issues need to be taken action, for examples:-
i) NCR land was snatched;
ii) thousands of dayaks in rural areas
do not have IC and birth certificates;
iii} Ibans population in Sarawak is the highest and yet they have less staff in the state civil service, and many others.
Regardless of what his underlying ‘message’ was, the fact remains that as a SEASONED POLITICIAN, Hadi should’ve known better. Don’t tell me that he spent all these years in politics without knowing how to watch his tongue. Of course we have nothing to be ashamed of when it comes to the sirat.. we wear it with pride come our festivals or other special occasions. But to say that we don’t know how to vote BECAUSE we wear the cawat is another story altogether. Even if the message there was that Dayaks are ‘backwards’ when it comes to their political maturity, do you think that most rural folks would see it that way? Maybe it’s his style to spout ‘poetry’ during ceramahs, but our dear Hadi is one lousy poet. He should’ve said what he meant to say, instead of going Shakespeare on the people.
