Dayak Penan SUPERMARKET?

Written by: Dr. John Brian Anthony

Dr. James and Penan Supermarket

I take it that Dr. James is laughing at the plight of the Penan – who are starving due to poor harvest and poor supply of food from their jungle gathering activities.

Dr. George Chan is helping either when he said the penan will survive as they have always survive.

Why did Dr. James described the Penan lack of food supply as their “supermarket”is not well stock.

I am in the opinion that Dr.James is not sensitive or serious about the plight of the poor people in the interior of Sarawak.

The Penan do not have “supermarket” as in the jungle. they never choose to be borned a Penan and it is not their wish to be poor and starving. It is the duty and responsibility of the government of Sarawak to provide for the people of Sarawak so that they may have a higher quality of life and better living.

For the Penan – is their life under BN Sarawak better now after 46 years rule or are they getting poorer. The answer is obvious that the BN government has no WILL to address the poverty of the rural population.

What is the government doing to assist

The Ministers and elected representatives are always looking for the easiest answer. That is, they give away tax payer money – spending all the time and not creating capabilities in their people to stand up to the harsh environment of today world.

Why?

Simply most of the times our political leaders are not using their brain. How can Dr. james say that the cost of bring food to starving people are more expansive than the food itself. That should not be an element of to talk in public about. We are talking about saving the life of citizens in our country who has been marginalized due to government logging policies.

The timber companies should be sendiung “tons” of food to this people and building material to start a new life. The government and companies should even put aside resources to train them to open and upgrade their agricultural practices.

We should not politicized the “life”of poor and starving people and make a mockery of them. If the government felt that it is not their role to provide then the citizens through NGOs can take over this responsibilities.

Then I will wonder why are we having government and paying the Ministers and the Public Service organization money to help develop and assist the peoiple in this country.

We give away Millions to other countries

We can give millions to other countries for humanitarian relief effort and why are we stalling in helping our very own citizen and people.

We donote $1 million to a school in West Malaysia – is that really neccessary or is that a Political CREDIT to be bought for certain political leaders benefits.

Conclusion

Dr. James should stop messing around with roots and basic issues in Sarawak as his PRS party is not meeting expectation of the Dayak.

By the way, a highly deforested area or a virgin forest in NOT the SUPERMARKET for any body. Dr. James I hope you should not use your words inter changeably otherwise I would say that words has no meaning to you. That will result in your continued bluffing and lying to the people of Sarawak and specifically the Dayak because you do not understand the meaning of the word you used.

I always remember your “uncomfortable posture” in Aljezeera when the pretty lady asked you about your “friend – and crony Taib” deeds in Sarawak.

Dr. James

Nothing personal – just a bit piss off by your taking it easy approach to a serious problem as a result of government bad policy on forest management. Dr. George Chan saying “they will survive” is not helping my respect for BN government.

Something was at Joe Salang’s mind when he said the RM4 billion given by the Federal Gov’t for Rural Development must not be diverted somewhere else. I read and re-read his statement but I am not clear of the meaning:

    1. Does that mean the RM4.0 b has a good chance of being diverted? Therefore this is a pre-emptive caution from a Federal Minster. OR

    2. Has there been cases where Federal Fund intended for a specific area has been diverted somewhere else? He must be have seen this happening otherwise what prompted his statement.

    3. Or suddenly the two Joe’s found their voices? One talked about Penans and another talked about RM4 b?

Honestly, if they continue to to speak as such, I can begin to like them!

    YB Datuk Joe Salang!
My salute to your openness in voicing out your concern about development funds distribution! I wish more Dayak Leaders would do what you have done! There’s nothing to fear if you are telling the truth! How many major rural projects had been diverted, only Taib knows! Now, all the Dayak’s Leaders must be united in their voice only then Taib listen! Do not be selfish, have no fear! Taib is only person, he is not God! If all of the 70 State assemblypersons don’t support him, he is a gone case!
Dayak’s Leaders must not fight with each other! Fighting over nothing beneficial for your community! That is the “Cawat” Mentality!

    BN CLASSIFIED economic POLICY.
    1. Carting timber from the ancestral land of the Dayaks- Cost of load exceed (10 X) the cost of transport. Action > PROCEED WITHOUT DELAY > TERMINATE OBSTRUCTIONS AT ALL COST > Reason (PROFIT & ENRICHMENT FOR THE BN)

    2. Bringing food aid to starving Penans – Transportation cost more than the cost of the load of food. Action > ABORT OPERATION > Reason(s)(CAUSE HUGE MONETARY LOSS TO THE BN. PENANS HAVE NO VOTING POWER – NO IC) NO WORK NO EAT!

BN personal cash-flow first, plight of the rakyat last.

I refer to an article under the heading ` Bangsa Iban Bangsa terbodoh dan termiskin di Malaysia` posted by Happyman on August 3 in this blog.

    Poverty Rate:

    1. Iban – 10%
    2. Other indigenous group 6.8 %
    3. Malay 5.0 %
    4. Melanau 1.2%
    5. Chinese 1.0%

If the figures are correct, it means that Iban is poorer than Penan, Orang Asli, 46 ethnics group in Sabah and other indigenous group in Sarawak.

    The Great Dayak Idea.

The great Dayak idea will not more than rubbish if it will not practice into practical.

A few weeks ago Tuai Rumah invite all the great Dayak idea Berandau, either come from BN or Opposition, all of us are invited. I wish to sponsor on this Randau. But not even one come forward.

The Great Dayak Idea keeps on coming present their great idea in this blog simplify great issue by great issue. Its look good for reading. Keep on talking but when come to walk, nobody wake up. I once again invite all Dayak from every corner of this globe come forward to organize Randau proposed by Tuai Rumah. Bring your great idea to this Randau. Make use of your great idea effectively. We will analysis and compose your great idea into agendas to solve the Dayak problem.

This Randau shall conduct by our YB, even our Chief Minister and Prime Minister Department and sponsor by government. In my deep heart, I usually hope the BN government plan to do it in near future and include both BN and opposition in the Randau.

My expectation is wrong, no clue at all from the present government to conduct Randau or forum to discuss and study the Dayak problem and at the same time find the solution to solve the problem. Since than I see, Tuai Rumah with his capacity as a blog owner of Dayak Baru propose it and I wish to sponsor it on my own capability.

Dayak, this is our challenge. The challenge we need to do together, the challenge we need to put away our political different, the challenge for the sake of our future. Dayak has failed in all areas a lot in the pass and going to be failed again and again if we not prepare ourselves. Nobody care about us. NOBODY. Not even our new Prime Minister, Datuk Najib.

6 KRA proposed by BN recently is one of the example of the present BN did not have specific agendas to overcome the thousands of Dayak problems. Not even one of the 6 agendas in KRA and leaded by Najib simplify our need specifically. 6 Billions special budget for Sabah-Sarawak – 4 billions for Transportation and 2 billions for rural development highlighted by Joe Salang is too general for helping the Dayak. To little compare to Dayak needs and money that’s has been taken away from Dayak wealth – DAM, NCR, logging, oil and gas industry. Not even one of YB Dayak questioning about this. They are happy with 6 billions where half of it will hijack by the Chief Minister and his crony. Dayak need to stand up by their own foot. Never expect, hope or let others to do for us.

Dayak has passed thro so many challenges in the pass. Fighting each others during Brooke time to get respect. Leaved behind, neglecting, discriminated and many awful deed during Rahman, Taib, Mohathir, Abdullah, Jabu, Leo Moggie, James Masing, Mawan, Endawie and Daniel leadership to cos Dayak now is categorized as the poorest and stupid people in Malaysia as posted by Happyman.

Even the early 20s years old student from other race can topple the senior Dayak Leader, promoted as minister, selected as candidate to grip the main Dayak area where Iban Temenggong comes from. Does this type of thing do not show the stupidity of our people, especially Iban Kapit and bad leadership of our present leader, particularly President of PRS? Does this type of thing is not enough insulting Dayak especially Iban? And yet, Kapit is the poorest Division in Sarawak in term of infrastructure. I chose this discrimination from thousand of examples that we have been presented in this blog.

Dayak, how many more years we can keep quite and wait and wait and wait?

    ———————————————–

I did offer to volunteer for the offline grounding/preparatory work, and the offer still stand.

Don’t know the reason for the lukewarm response.Perhaps people are skeptical since there have been many Dayak Cultural Symposiums, that does not appear to have sustained follow thru ?

The randau in this weblog is in the micro-mobilization phase of a typical social movement. Does it has the critical mass to move forward ? Thats also probably the question playing in people’s mind. Or people may actually like DayakBaru to remain as is, for cross fertilisation of ideas – after office hours.

To me, as you yourself said it, Iban Abroad, there’s enough ideas in all the postings that can be crystalized – maybe into a book, as you suggested.

The book can as simple as a compilation of “What Dayak Wants” which can be downloaded free by any individual- who would be required to digitally endorse the ideas, or to make comments for improvement.

It can be used to articulate DayakBaru position on NCR land, and alternative model(s) that will be supported.Formal questions can be raised to the politicians, government agencies – that will elevate the occasional postings here from mere blowing hot air to a public demand for accountability.

And I can go on and on.But its best not to press the issue.

While DayakBaru remains status quo, it will continue to serve as a collective blogging tool.To that end, it seem to serve its purpose well-and has regular following. And for that reason, it may well have to remain – unchanged.

Those who seek a more direct activism, perhaps as result of the silent conversations in the blog, will need to join the various NGOs or political parties – but the choice is still rather limited.

I still harbor hope that DayakBaru “regulars” will transcend the invisible barrier and turn DB into a formidable NGO. Oh well, another flight of fancy …

  12. Iban Abroad on August 7th, 2009 6:39 pm

    MT,

Tq for you comment on the so call for Randau DB.

I still insist that this randau is essential to DB members, specially in term of face to face talk and discussion for the deeper or personal suggestion by the members.

Now DB is well known to all Malaysia even oversea. A lot of people insist to see our seriousness in helping Dayak, Randau is one of it.

Secondly we can minute or composed our randau into book systematically, get the contact person or individual directly to do their part. I think we shall try or do one.

If we can utilize the Randau I really support it with my best.

    Once again Thank Unggal MT.

  13. KuncitMuncit on August 8th, 2009 11:51 pm

The RANDAU DAYAKBARU suggested by Tuai Rumah is a great idea.Any appearance of BN politicians to this RANDAU would be a pleasant surprise! If it materialise, a face-to-face discussion with them would afford us a direct channel to deliver the issues, grousers and “wants” of the ordinary Dayak mass, which have been bombarding the Dayakbaru blogsite relentlessly, straight to the government’s ears.

The noble proposal(if realised),i’m certain, would not be in vain.

But i truly doubt that few(if any)DB “regulars” and commentators from both sides of the divide would emerge from the closets and shed their masks without hesitation to participate in the face-to-face discussion. For personal reasons and reasons best known to their indivdual selves, they rather stay anonymous.
But that should not in any way be a measure of their sincerity and commitment to their comments.
