New Generation of Dayak BASTARDS

Written by: Dr. John Brian Anthony

The Topic

I tried hard to avoid using the word “bastard” – because it is usually associated with “bad things”. In this case, the process of marriage is being followed but the end result is still bastard – without a father.

Why is the word bastard used?

In my not too frequent visit to certain rural areas in Sarawak I have met with 5 cases of sanction “bastards” – a child without a father.

The case usually is a marriage of a local Dayak girl to a foreign plantation worker. The foreign worker goes back to their country of origin and leave an infant child or even an unborn child and never to return to this country or the same plantation company again.

How then the child get his birth certificate?

The Federal office staffs of National Registration Department would strictly follow their process and procedure and who could blame them.

Then come this application for Birth Certificate – not accompanied by Maternity Clinic visit card, no marriage certificate and not even the Penghulu / or community leader would consent to give positive verification to the application.

Then the application will get no where and the child that is born in Malaysia will never get his Birth Certificate and will not enjoy the full benefit of a Malaysian citizen.

How many of us would like to be that child – “bastard by poor planning of the government and a process that is not capable of dealing with such problem?”

Jelaing Mersat asked the Dayak to discourage such marriage with foreigner. You know how difficult that is to do – a single sperm will fertilize an egg with or without marriage cerificate.

The ignorance and shame of the mother is too much to bear that she will get herself check in clinic and report the matter to authorities. That might help but is that the “procedure” required by the government in such a case.

Plantation Policy

The government should put the social responsibility of such a situation with the Plantation company and a process must be found where we Dayak willnot have an increase in the numbers of Dayak bastards in years to come.

Conclusion

Is this the problem that Social Development Ministry should look into or which other Ministry is more relevant. I think this is for the DUN to debate upon and come out with the solution.

Dayakbaru DO NOT want to see an increase in DAYAK BASTARDS population.

    Dayaks and the Cawat Issue

So much has been debated on the “Cawat” Issue! From the highest position of Dayaks’Leaders in the BN government right to the Dayaks at the longhouse level.
What is so disappointing, none of the Dayak’s Top Leadership dare to raise the issue of land grabs by the Pehin and his cronies! Do the Dayak Leaders have their balls intact? Or are they wearing sarong now?
When others pointed out on our poverty problems, cawat mentality and backwardness, they categorilly denied that the Dayaks are living in poverty and being marginalised. All of these leaders know very well that this is the actual fact! But they could not lift their fingers in the right direction, lest they be dumped by their political master The Pehin Curi Sarawak!
Dayaks, Wake Up! Act Now and Unite to get rid of all these parasites! Only the Dayaks themselves can do this! Others can only help us if we are ready to help ourselves!
Forget about Jabu and his stinking collegues! They are super rich, so they forget that most of the Dayaks are still living in poverty. It is their policy and deeds that keep the Dayaks”Cawat” mentality! Bala Jabu ke nyirat bansa Dayak, awak ke sida iya meruan merintah belama! Dayak Betong enda ngirupmlangkau, Jabu nganjong berudat-udat arak langkau, awak ke bala Iban ke enggai ke iya menang, enda nurun ngundi.
Jabu mina berani ngelaban bansa diri empu, tang iya nadai pelir ba moa Taib.

Wow! Bastard is a heavy and sharp word Doc. Well, it do cut straight through hearts to those who it meant for.

Does the word, means for the girls, the foreigners, the innocent unborn childs or the whole system(including the NRD) that permitted this scenario to happen.

Yes, we are fully agreed with you Doc, when you said, “Jelaing Mersat asked the Dayak to discourage such marriage with foreigner. You know how difficult that is to do – a single sperm will fertilize an egg with or without marriage cerificate.”

Well, somebody, entity, enterprise got to be responsible for it.

These cases are similar to the ones reported about timber camp workers impregnating innocent and vulnerable Penan girls not too long ago. These culprits too disappeared the moment the pregnant girls appeared(accompanied by their parents or relatives)at the camp, looking for the fathers of the unborn children.!!

With the opening of our NCR land for oilpalm plantations and the likes, our menua is literally being “occupied” by foreigners who work the plantations. Some of them are married men and some single men.

Dayak girls must beware of both categories. They should keep their distance and dont easily fall for sweettalks, expensive gifts and romantic approaches. In the flock, there may be con-men and predators of girls.

Dayak parents too must always remind their daughters of the same.Always lookout for them. Dont be taken in by crates of “orangeboom” or “cap apek” offered and delivered to you to numb your judgement and opinions. While you lie dead drunk, the predators set upon your girls.

“Foreigners” means they are not Dayaks.More often then not they belong to religions unfavoured by Dayaks. To me even Malaysians from Semananjung, present in Dayak hinterland are “strangers” thus”foreigners”.

The plantations Management, our politicians and the police can only do so much. The responsibility lies with us ourselves.

Which much respect to all opinions voiced. Dare i emphasize that proper education concerning ‘ reproduction ‘ be made a Must in our education system. We have to stop our ‘sweep it under the carpet and forget about it’ attitude or maybe.. ‘it will not happen to our daughter’ attitudes. Times are changing but the actions of harmful individuals are on the rise. Parents play a vital role on how to bring their children up into the world. If we hold the reins too tight, it will snap.. If we slack on the reins then it will be harder to regain control. Balance is important. Lets not put too much blame on the foreigners because there has to be a willing partner.

These foreigners who worked in the plantations are some times quite handsome, especially the Bangladesh with their blue eyes, the indon with their moles pn their cheek, just look alike a film star Rano Karno. No wonder who could blame our girls easily attracted to them.

But the consequences of these unholy mutual relationship can cause a headache. And this will create yet another social illness, which the Doc called Bastard.

For us we can easily blame the girls and their parents for their less educated and ignorant, the authority concern for the lack of enforcement, the company for there is no social awareness and public responsibilities, the foreigners too for their narrow minded citizen just to take advantage of the situation and their brothers should be held responsibilities for their act of indecent proposal.

Those bugau always be a bugau…they will always bite the hand of those who are nice to them…no wonder my grandpa always taught me not to trust the bugau indon……by the way, anyone can recall the massacre that happened during a weeding party somewhere in kapit not so long ago?

How about our foreign brothers from malaya i.e lepeh? they have quite of records of impregnating our girls..

    Solution:

    1. All Plantations in Sarawak observe the rules set by the National Union of Plantation Workers (NUPW), which is affiliated to the Malaysia Trade Union Congress.

    2. The NUPW has its set of rules on wages, medical, housing and insurance (SOCSO, EPF). Current salary scale if RM13 per day, 30 days of work is less than RM400. EPF, SOCSO, housing and medical care are not included.

    3. All plantations, who subscribed to the NUPW, must be given incentives by the state; reduction of “windfall taxes” and other tax allowances.

    4. Given that scenario, many of the BOYS who search for jobs in factories in P Malaysia would be more than willing to stay and work nearer to home. Many boys are prepared to stay nearer to their homes if, and only if, they can find employment that provides equivalent salaries.

    5. This prevents plantations from hiring foreigners.

    6. Plantations that fail to adhere to NUPW’s rules and guidelines must be made to pay a penalty. Plantations where cases as these are reported, must be made liable for the maintenance of the fatherless child.

    7. Since affected are Dayak girls, this is a case worthy of the work of all our respectable ADUNs. The welfare of Dayak people working in plantations are in your hands.

    8. PRS youth, fight for this. Burn the flag (underwear) of the nations where these naughty boys came from.

    Best regards.

The problem would be the hardest to solve. It is what we call ‘human instinct’,where after reaching puberty ,the opposite sex always gets attracted to one another.

‘Uncontollable urge’ often comes without planning and it is a matter of ‘who’your partner was at that particular time,be it a local or a foreigner.

There may be numerous cases among tha Dayaks, but I can be pretty sure that other races are not totally excempted.

I congratulate Dr.JBA for bringing the subject out for us Dayaks to ponder upon.A very important issue, which crosses Dayak Political boundaries.

    DB,

This is a Global BASTARDs but not doesn’t mean that we give up to solve this problem effecting our people. Thro SDNU is the best way to highlight this to higher autjority.

I prefer, first conduct study on it, do some home work, do some forum, present this study to the related authority.

We DB can monitor the action party base on our study.

I would also like to present to you here a short video clip sent to me by a reader of this blog which exposes the obnoxious treatment of Teoh Beng Hock, a suspect in custody.

  17. Mabel Rachel Maria on August 4th, 2009 11:42 pm

Doc! Regarding the issue of BASTARD, it is our hope and plead to you, to address this matter to the NGOs such as SDNU,SADIA & SIDS in every forum, seminar and workshop since you have a trusted and a proper network with these organisations.

May this problem can be eliminated to the minimum,is our hoped.

  18. Cikgu Iban on August 5th, 2009 5:37 am

This is a universal and a few centuries old humane problem not exclusively experienced by the Dayak in Sarawak. It does not also happen to be found in our plantation sector alone. And it is driven by human instinct. Nobody/country has been found to able to solve this problem.as mostly could only manage and control it so that it appears satisfactory.

Likewise, the problem of Dayak Bastards could also be reduced so as not to tarnish the image of our community. We should not let the problem look like to be free for all whereby the opportunist would just do it without feeling guilty

To me, at individual/family level there are two fundamental solutions to this problem which I do not want to explain in details; 1). education and 2). Religion/emphasis on a particular way of life. There has to be some form of commitment among oneself in order to prevent this problem.

Our discussion has been centred around the people in plantation sector. I also could see people from P Malaysia do contribute to the same problem, esp teachers posted to our school through National Integration policy of the government. Does anyone have the figure?. They only want to islamise our people and then divorce them after a few years. The solider/police are also causing similar problem.

My in-law is an example . She does not get any alimony from her ex-husband.Well.. she did not even ask for it ,to be honest.

Other than the family itself, SAW has covered a great deal about how to solve it.

    Cheers…

to the militant man, I have read almost all ur comments in the blog and almost all if not all of ur comments are negative toward the dayak community. yunno I could sense that u r not a dayak at all. u could be a

    laut panjai kukut
    kena nyeput tanah ladu
    or cina balok mata
    enda ngelala iban ngalu
or melanau debai duding mata acuk

if u r an Iban, I’m sure u r one of the taib regime’s dog who always bark and clear taib’s shit in every particular…

now about the…..(I not dare to say it) that dr john mentioned and asked for comment. I have came across an abino women with her….(I not dare to say it) child who wanted to basuk pala her little boy. unfortunately the church ignore her..this was because the child father was an indon who was never to be seen again. if this happen to the militant man’s sister, cousin, daugther or anyone that have something to do with him, are u going to ‘say pandak jako’ well militant man if unicef could not do anything about it, I say we can, at least we go to our rumah panjai (if u got one) and tell or give advise to the long house’s girls the consequences if they get along with foreigners… I think that would be a noble deed of yours…rather than condeming ur owm people.

    …Dayak Bastards….

Wait and see until they are 22 or so years old.
Remember one minister raised by a single mother?.

It was about 5 pm somewhere in oil palm plantation (longhouse) in 1987, in Miri , you know a best time when young children came out to play. I was amazed to see handsome, beautiful 5-7 years old children of multicolors (white (orgputih), black, mata sepet, fair complexion? and so forth playing chasing each other. I asked ” anak bala temuai?” {children of visitors?}. A man replied “They are the children of our longhouse’ people. Their mothers were the maids working in Miri”.

Someday, I hope to go there again to see what are they become now. Some are in their mid twenties by now.

But I dont like either local or foreigners married our girls and deserted them later.
    AND
I would not call their decendent a “b….,either.

  23. KuncitMuncit on August 12th, 2009 8:59 am

    Uncle Ben,

I will never call these innocent, blameless souls brought into this world by irresponsible fathers “bastards”. Simply because the word is derogatory and a “curse-word.”

Why should we be so insensitive and be cruel as to call them that? They never asked to be born,or to be left in that situation. We should sympathetically just call them “fatherless children.”

Isn’t calling them “bastards” and “fatherless” the same thing!?
No!! One is “shameful” and seem to blame them for their condition, and the other is “pitiful”,sympathetic and understanding.

They HAVE fathers. If they dont, then how were they conceived? So,they are just children abandoned by their irresponsible fathers.

These short-sighted jerk-off fathers should realise that these innocent, abandoned children are part them,…conceived from their sperm!

One wonders if they have souls,…if they are ever concerned and worried about THEIR children, part of themselves, that they left behind.
