Change begin with ourselves

We should realize that we cannot change people and circumstances without first changing ourselves. In this respect, we ourselves must be well-disciplined first.

Political Party Discipline

An internal leadership tussle in any political party leading to its deregistration was due to lack of discipline among its members unwilling to compromise,quarrelsome and self-interest attitude. This applies to voters who are strong supporters of a particular political party, but in election they decided to vote against their beloved party. This was due to lack of discipline among them because they were being easily tricked by sweet promises.

Societies Need Discipline

Therefore, all societies need discipline. Any society that wishes to progress needs discipline. The discipline level within societies however vary according to sociological faces at play. Cultures vary and hence concept of discipline varies in different communities.

Discipline in Dayak Community

Every Tuai Rumah (longhouse chief), being a leader in the villages, must adopt positive methods to enhance the discipline among the folk by creating a feeling of willingness in his personnel to observe discipline. This is achieved by motivating the men (anakbiak) under his command through a sense of belonging, the sense of achievement and pride in the group and its objectives.

Therefore, every Tuai Rumah always ensure that:-

(i) he sets a good example of moral, ethical and professional conduct himself at all times i.e he has self discipline, not always get drunk;

(ii) he is sympathetic to the needs of his anabiak but ensures that he has the moral courage to be firm and resolute in demands for efficiency and service;

(iii) he promotes strong ties with his anakbiak by way of mutual respect and above all self-respect;

(iv) he maintains adequate communication and dialogue to ensure feedback with his anakbiak on a basis of mutual respect, and

(v) that he is fair and impartial to all his anakbiak at all times so they may begin to trust his leadership.

Conclusion

The above manifestations of good discipline could be instilled to a leader of any political party. In addition to that, the leader is responsible first and foremost for self-discipline. Only then can the grassroots level he commands be expected to have adequate discipline. Always remember, ” fish rots from the head “.

    Discipline is a state of mind that can become a habit. Even writing an article and posting a comment in the blogs, we must cultivate discipline under the right mental attitude so that what we are writing contain factual information, fair comments and constructive criticism, not defamatory, libel and slander and most importantly the articles and comments do not contain seditious words that has seditious tendency.
