Dayakbaru – we can improve our posting

Observations

I have a few interesting observations to share with DB readers this evening. Many who already knows it, including myself – may still need the reminder every now and then.

1. Some of us often fail to differentiate between an argument, and a verbal fight. The objective of an encounter when a person take a position, and others counter with rational argument, is to narrow the gap between opposing positions – by clarifying inferences, innuendo and logical flaws.
People can disagree but after a good rational argument, both parties become more enlightened.

2. All personal truths are subjective and need to be debated and discussed, and challenge by others for it to be taken to higher plane of objective truths. Too often, we live in our little minds, and our system of belief – and will not take too kindly when others disagree with it.

3. Honest defense of a position, viewpoints and opinions require adherence to some fundamental laws of enquiry – or rules for arguing. Example – to attack a person, is called ad hominem – and thats dishonest. To divert the argument outside of the original context is called red herring, and again, that’s not nice. It is so much more fun when people consciously try to follow the rules : both parties becomes more clever.

4. Our experience gets enriched when we allow ourselves the curiosity to really listen / read first before replying to a post, especially those posts that we disagree with. Take out the emotive contents, and the message from the messenger – to understand a statement, no matter how abrasive it may be, on face value.

5.To argue but with at least, one common goal will help. In this DB, if indeed the universal goal to improve Dayak lot is shared by all – there can’t be such acrimony, such as those we seen from time to time.

For me: even as I would “wax lyrical” when I demand accountability from our Dayak leadership, it is not out of personal spite. I would still shake their hands and welcome them to my humble home.

The demand for accountability is a legitimate demand for performance and accountability for Dayak greater good – not a personal wish to run people down. After all, we are all Dayak blood brothers, and there aren’t many of us, among 22 million others in this country.

Primitive practice – wanting to win an argument

Of course, it would be quite challenging when a fellow Dayak is stuck in the primitive practice of wanting to win an argument, in any whichever way except following the rules of logic and honest argumentation. Would take lots of Dayak love to stay engaged, in such a situation. Sometimes to walk away, is best – if 4 ears has slammed shut.

Conclusion

As I see it, no matter how different our views are – we can still establish bridge of understanding if we allow ourselves the possibility of being wrong. But, maybe I’m wrong.

Is it still possible for the fractured Dayak community to engage as other socially advanced people would, or are we destined by our DNA to be splintered ?

Thank you Meramat, I absolutely agree, though I think a little bit of spice is necessary to ignite some sparks. Indeed the approach is “to enquire and discover” rather than “I know better, you are wrong, I am right”. This is the thing with internet – we can’t see people and many times have no idea who we are talking to…but that’s just part of it I guess. On my part, I sincerely seek apologies if I have stepped on anyone’s toe.

Mr. MT/CA I agreed with you 2 brothers may I call you 2 brothers ,it’s high time for us to prove We Dayak not what others out there think we are just like what Bujang lelang (ari Africa) said. We were known as the most friendly and Hospitality people as we often heard remarks from the foreigners and Tourists don’t argue over the split milk look for solution to make Dayak live more secure in our own land. thank

Taking samples from recent postings,i see Dayak deriding fellow Dayak, thus dividing Dayak themselves. Some are cynical, some severely provocative, some ‘look’ like punches and counter-punches. Now,these are bad for a race that requires unity to enable it to achieve its dreams and aspirations. Besides, very few comment are new ‘exposes’, fewer are useful, and fewer still are ones we can actually act on and help us directly.

I also feel we have done enough of finger-pointing and showering politicians with blames for the sorry state we are in. Stop! Look at ourselves. We are partly to be blamed for it too. We voted them in. We are not helping ourselves. Dayaks have two means to elevate themselves: their votes and their NCRLand. Utilise both wisely!

I believe that only ‘open-minded’ READERS of the opposing comments in DBaru will emerge enlightened and wiser. On the other hand,i fear the writers from opposing camps will stand their ground, refusing to be enlightened, thus further widening the gaps in opinions and solidifying disunity. Now this is harmful to us Dayak.

Sometimes truth hurts, but it is true that the bulk of Ibans just argue to ‘win’ an argument and refuse to see and accept truth, that the other person is right and he is wrong. So they argue on and on, like a dog chasing its own tail, serving no purpose.

I dont know about other blogs, but i would love to see less of ‘political’ comments and more of service and help(for our people) topics and comments in DBaru.

Write to offer as/seek help from the services of the economists, land-lawyers,corporate managers, senior administrators and experienced civil servants etc. among us in DBaru. Comments like: Cara niri ke ‘small business’,kati enggau ari ni minta loan. Kati cara minta orang/perintah nyukat lalu minta pala tanah NCR kitai. Ni cara ngena tanah NCR kena ngubah pengidup kitai kelimpah ari JV kelapa sawit. Kati cara bulih loan PTPTN. Kati enggau dini ulih meda ‘jawatan kosong’ ba pengawa perintah enggau cara minta. Cara minta pengawa ‘off-shore’ba kompeni gas enggau minyak. Ni cara ‘probate’ tauka transfer ownership of properties. How to late-register for birth cert. or IC….and a myriads of other information that our DBaru readers can pass on to their families in the ulu there.

For those in DBaru who find fun and contentment in sparring on political matters, they may find these irrelevant and uninteresting. But that is being blind to the naivety and illiteracy of our rural folks and that their naivety has rendered them static,dead-locked in the old ways of doing things. They DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO!… with their resources etc. etc…..and even with themselves!

So,perhaps DJBA and co.could consider limiting the ‘political’ topics that can foster disunity among Dayaks and encourage the more useful socio-economic topics and comments that can help and bebefit us Dayaks.
