After 46 years of Forming Malaysia – so what?

Written by: Dr. John Brian Anthony

Wealth

We see Sarawak wealth increased – mainly due to exploitation of Sarawak rich natural resources. Are  the people of Sarawak happy with their share of in the distribution of income?

Here lies the thorny issues. The wealth of Sarawak now resides with the powerful political families and their business cronies. The wealth of Sarawak has been made the personal properties of Sarawak State leadership.

The “confrontation” now is not between races and religion – it is between the “have” and the “have not”.

Education and knowledge through information has made it possible for the younger generation to see the misdeed of the ruling political parties. In Malaysia, BARISAN NATIONAL led by UMNO and in Sarawak led  by UMNO proxy: Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu not only could NOTsee their “wrongs” through abuse of political position and power, even if they do the leaders choose to ignore the situation holding to their believes that self enrichment through power abuse is perfectly alright.

That explain why people think think that if you want to get rich you become a politician. Today there is truth in this. We dayakbaru wanted to change that.

Sarawak is RICH and why do we have many hardcore POOR

When I said this, the BN government and their supporter would jump up disagreeing with the observation. In fact studies on rural poverty by public university are being suppressed and its researchers label and “liars”.

Why are the political leadership behaving in such uncouth political manner  by practicing “condemnation” and even “degrading the characters” of innocent researchers?.   Is it to do with “social and economic suppression” or is it plain personal trait of certain politician who cannot accept truth, feedback and facts. Can these political leaders be hiding from their “helplessness” personal attributes thereby are not able to solve real long term problems.

Is it a personal greed for wealth and holding on to power that anything that is seen as threatening their political leadership position the leaders would react either directly or through proxy to curb the discontentment.

What do we have today?

We have our natural wealth taken away from us. Our oil and gas is taken over by Federal government and only 5% is given to us. This wealth that the Federal took they used to finance the “ketuanan Melayu” agenda and in Sarawak PBB is the UMNO stooge.

In Sarawak – the Lau, the Ting, the Wong and the “bin” took to our forest and land. Some of this wealth are given to Dayak leaders -till today the Dayak millionaires that was created by political power abuse has not produced sizable spin off to even help provide employment for the community.

Why do we form Malaysia?

We have high hope of progress for the people of Sarawak. We look forward to active participation of the civil service through local content. Today government employment are filled with West Malaysian – taking opportunities from the local.

Education

Sarawak are given teachers – assigned to rural areas – with teachers barely knowing how to speak English. How do we expect our youth to be able to be effective in the global arena without a good foundation in English language.

Our mathematics are horrendous when many young people actually cannot do simple calculation and doing abstract thinking.

Sarawak schools are pathetic looking while the West malaysian schools are impressive and equip with modern facilities. The knowledge gap will open wider and more so when the sarawak poor are being marginalized in opportunities for further higher tertiary education.

Roads

With so much natural resources from the rural areas – where are the roads that can help community to grow by providing services to transport our produce to market.

We build many great building – how many people benefits from such buildings. The construction of expansive buildings and structure are only meant for leaders to leave their legacy or “political foot print” in Sarawak. It is self praising at best.

Water

Instead of drinking cleaner water, we are drinking muddy water from logging and filled with chemical leaching from plantation pesticides /herbicide etc.

Water that were from rivers are now collected in tanks provided by government and logging / plantation companies. Is this a fair deal. Where are the monies collected from logging / plantation that can be used to provide this life sustaining commodity.

Health

Incidences of body reaction “dermatological manifestation” is getting quite common when before such incidence is zero in rural areas.

In Kuching private hospital are sprouting like mushroom – to get admission you must pay and there are not cheap.

It has been announced that more hospitals will be located in Kota Semarahan – urban areas etc. I wonder what happen to Lubok Antu, Belaga, Niah, as this places still do not have hospital. Are these towns neglected because the government do not have an objective blue print or are government projects carried out in arbitrary manner to the whim and fancies of Senior Minister?.

Employment

About 24,000 Sarawakian working in Johore, 60,000 in the Klang valley and 10,000 on the Northern State of mostly Perak and Penang. Why do this people seek employment in other States? It is because Sarawak cannot provide employment for them. Is that progress?

Even those employed in the Civil service and the Armed Forces – Sarawakian do not occupy important position or holding high rank as in the Army. Are we kept at second class citizens?

Social harmony

The 1 Malaysia concept is an indication that something is really wrong in Malaysian with Racial and Religious relation. What is the root caused? It is through UMNO / BN politics and their policies and also through the approach of “singular race supremacy”. Has this improved now – the answer is it is getting worst.

National Service camp

What make Malaysian think that such a camp with lasted a few months could make the change in the young people to live together when they have been together in schools for at least 11-13 years and the school system develop more “differences” than “similarities” among the young Malaysian citizen.

Political power

Many of our DB readers got upset when we provide feedback on the poor performance of our current Dayak leaders. Being elected and also placed with the “Community trust” these leaders should rightly response to take their responsibility seriously and to continue to put up clear agenda for the Dayak community.

If unity is what the Dayak want and leading the State is our political goal – why not unity start from the top first. Let the political leaders decides on the form or structure of their unity – then we will reign supreme.

It is useless to blame the voters for not being united. It is not positive to say that DB is dividing the Dayak through its posting. We are waiting for selfless leadership failing which we will follow “promises” – empty or otherwise because that is the situation we are in.

Dayakbaru conclusion

Malaysia was formed on September 16th 1963. Malaya should give up their 31st August date. We can acknowledge that 31st is Malaya independent day – 31st August is a secondary date compared to Malaysia formation date of September 16th.

Dayakbaru is a FORUM portal – where we have many writers, posting, discussion etc. It provides a good avenue to understand Dayak issues within the context of Malaysia and Dayak priorities within Dayak community. It is NOT  a political party as some of you tried to find the “blue print” for CHANGE WE MUST.

The Change start with each of us – and the change is for our personal good. With personal capability and capacity we move towards contributing to our community through NGOs or similar organization. But we hold to a political vision of “fairness” in all things progressive and constructive.

We MUST continue to dream our political goals and to do that Change we Must.

it is true 46 years of merdeka not 52 years..

they changed the history date to deny our rights

  2. Uchu Hawong@Raong on August 23rd, 2009 7:49 pm

In any interview by JPA, if there are 10 successful candidates, 9 would be for the Malay while 1 would be a competition among the other races.
If we enter any Federal depts in the WM, one would bound to see more than 90% are Malay staff; we can hardly see the Indians or chinese. It will take ages to make a 1Malaysia a reality.

This is the problem with the opposition who always viewed all gomen effort negatively. You look at the few states at Malaya under PR rule, does they look any better? Where is the change we must you are louding about? The “sulit culture” is still around and where are the transparancy gomen that PR are boastfull about?
People are still talking about butter and bread which are becoming much harder to get.

This is the real question we should ask when federation of Malaysia are going to celebrate her national day very soon. – Thank you lutor for raising such issue.

The Prime Minister announce his 1Malaysia concept but in the mean time keep in stressing “ketuanan melayu” and “agama islam as main the main religion. Therefore, this concept has bring so much confussion rather than solution of how malaysian people should united.

They always blame the british for practicing divide and rules, in fact their also do the same. So what is difference the between UMNO and british. They say british only know how to steal malaya wealth in that time. Now malaya is stealing sarawak wealth. So, how did we response? With all of the political leaders are being well feed by the theives. They can’t make any noise anymore. Maybe that’s mean by 1malaysia.

I cry in my heart when I place my foot on Kuala Lumpur ground for the first time. What a big difference. Why did sarawak town didn’t have a shape like what kuala lumpur and putrajaya have? We are all fully aware that sarawak generate more money than any industries in any state of malaya. Our money from oil, coal, gold, logs, and all of sarawak natural resources.

So, who we prefer: be with malaya or be with brooke?

However with malaya has master the technique of delusion with their propaganda, something they from british. Most of the delusion are too good to be true, most of our people are believe what these street magician are showing true tv, newspaper, radio and many more “legal channel”.

Are we also fall into the same illusions as some others had did. That is why now I am rarely watch tv, esspecially tv1,2,3,7,9 because these tv full of ullusions and I am affraid that one day, I will fall into the hand of these serpent.

We Sarawak is still not independant yet.
There is no fair distribution of
wealth among the races. In Economy, we Dayaks are sidelined. Enormous amount of wealth and resources goes to certain group of people[politician] and to the federal. The majority of us [Dayaks] still live in a sorry state particularly the rural folks.
There are so many issues that need to be addressed among us dayaks

For now, my spirits towards an Independant Malaysia tend to fade!

  7. haro on August 24th, 2009 12:27 am

for history buffs, we are still “technically” in emergency (darurat)..

so cabinet or parliment has no power..

go ask any political sc. lecturer about this..interesting fact

  8. dayaklama on August 24th, 2009 2:48 am

So Doc, what are the nuisance here? We are blessed that we have a stable gomen under BN gomen. What else is not enough? You want new house, new car you can just drop by anywhere provided you have money. You want your children have good education send them to prestige school. You want good roads, better hospital, bigger supermarket then move to the city. You want to secure better position and good pay study hard and get a degree from a recognise institution.

If you talking about the larger community of Dayak, same rule would apply. To those who stay at rural area they don’t do much money transaction so they live comfortably as well.To those who would think to migrate from rural to urban must well equipped themselves. Now the choice is yours, to be or not to be.

What it got to do with the change of gomen. What is the blueprint of change that the new gomen is all about?

  9. jojis on August 24th, 2009 3:15 am

whoever says malaysia is stable under BN rule is simply somebody who doesnt want change, which means he is against the motto of dayakbaru. this is simply not acceptable

  10. Panjai Runding Panjai Ruai on August 24th, 2009 12:54 pm

Dayak Lama sounds very much like Changop 4540.He uses the word ‘gomen’ just like the way Unggal Changop did.Anyway, may be I am hallucinating.

The majority of our Dayaks are not aware of our arguments inside the blogs, what a pity.I hope the intended RANDAU will bring some insights to our rural folks.

JJM had said that Dayak Lama is trying his reverse psychology in DB,well, who knows may be he is.!!!!

So far he had aroused a lot of attention lately with his personal postings.

    Cheers everyone.

    Thank you.

  12. jojis on August 24th, 2009 1:45 pm

or…maybe we should not bother what dayaklama said because we are not awaiting for his ideas? maybe not to us opposition because we never said we want to except for MRM and other BN supporters…hmm

  13. koko on August 24th, 2009 5:09 pm

Hi Dayak baru, we know you want POWER for the PR, but they way you try to gain power is divisive, by planting “uneasy” feeling toward Malaysian federation? The same strategy you use on 16th September issue, somehow the issue makes like West Malaysia the evil one… and I know, later you plan to come as the saviour thru your GOD ANWAR. Luckily, it didn’t happen.

  14. Reserved Player on August 24th, 2009 6:39 pm

Let him be, and “rusty” will not last longer. Comfortable you say? Comfort your head la.. when ridding a 4 hours of long boat and spend 500 ringgit for single trips.

I simply don’t want to curse for some more.. shame for yourself.

    PRPR,

Yes..Changop4540 and Dayaklama are twin brothers!.

Both are supportive of government policies esp the distribution of MRPs like zinc roof, chicks etc to the folks.

In this DB blog, their characters are similar…

    Cheers…

The annual budget from federal to small state like Perlis is the same as federal gomen given to Sarawak. Do you think this fair. Our tuai rumah still minta for atap, batu bata and arap for MRP from our YB’s. It better for we dayakbaru to advise this tuai………..tuai rumah tu minta tanah rumah panjai to be title land jangan macam rumah Nyawin anytime aja kena tendang keluar co’s of MARDI.
