Post Taib Era… How prepared are we for a change?

Written by Iban Baru

Happy to see Taib retire

So much have been said about the misdeed of current state government. Much anticipation and speculation have been made about the Chief Minister’s state of health vis-à-vis his stepping down from power. By and large, I think most Sarawakian (Dayak included) are naturally joyful should Taib decided to vacate his throne one day.

Let us examine our preparedness

The big question remains, will there be drastic change should Taib decided to step down in near future? In our context, despite the frustration and resentment against Taib and his co-hoot, lets examine our selves from our contemporary political standing, economic disadvantage & social status point of view.

Political Leadership

As pointed out in the Dayak Symposium held in Sibu recently, Taib is a political Strategist, smart planner, posses strong business & political acumen, decisive and a discipline person. His inner circles of loyal & capable advisors, at home and abroad also surround him. His political and economic tentacles are sprouting throughout the nooks and corners of this country.

Do We have a candidate to be the next CM

Do we Dayaks (or any other Sarawakian) have a matching personality who can step into his shoes and outdo him or at least be on par with him? I am neither trying to glorify nor deify Taib, but to outdo a smart man like Taib ~ we need an equally smart leader. We desperately need one such soul – a dedicated, selfless and visionary leader to take us through post Taib era.

Richness and power of money

Money is strength and power, which breed greed. It is an open secret that Taib has amassed huge financial fortune at home and abroad, and he will not pause to think a second to utilize such resources should he felt threatened politically or morally.

I believe also that if there is a technology to enable him to live another 100 years, I am sure he is willing and capable to purchase the technology! But the Almighty holds our last card ~ everybody goes when the time comes!

Re-examination of ourselves

So let examine ourselves again, who among us Dayaks have the fund to pacify Taib’s political prowess given the high poverty incidence & illiteracy among us? We are not talking about the ‘wealth-in waiting’ that Anwar promises post election victory. What we have are bunch of patronage Dayak politicians and apathetic political leaders – who had overstayed their welcomed!

Dayak Millionaire

How many Dayak millionaires do we have today, and willing to shed some of their fortune toward these causes? Lets face the fact ~ to win any election anywhere in the world, we need money, lots of it.

In the US, despite excellent infrastructure, President Obama campaign team raised billions of dollars to fund his election campaign despite no apparent vote buying, ‘instant noodle projects’ or paid audience. What more to say in Sarawak, given our arduous terrain, scattered yet poverty stricken population and largely illiterate rural longhouse voters!

PKR Candidates

The way PKR treated previous election candidates (especially in rural areas) in Sarawak has been disappointing. Few of my closed friends were duped to be election candidates in the promises of election funding by PKR leaderships, but when come to the crunch, the poor candidates had to fend for themselves ~ fund were either token sum or not forthcoming at all.

The massive logistic cost, even on nomination day would easily cost a candidate RM20K. I might sound pessimistic, but it is a fact as far as Sarawak election is concerned. Anwar and PKR leadership have to accept the fact that if PKR ever dream to capture Sarawak, they must make sure money is available!

Political Unity & Putrajaya connects

Post Taib era would witness an interesting yet different political landscape for Sarawak. Not only Dayak have to ‘Politically Unite”, but other races especially Chinese community who hold the state economic power have to be part of the unity game. Dayak leaders should look beyond the horizon of PRS & SPDP. Neither they be looking at consolidating Dayak support from PRS and SPDP, but even more crucial are the support from fellow Sarawakian in PBB or SUPP. Our leaders political horizon should goes beyond Sarawak boundaries, even beyond PutraJaya!

Attribute of a smart politician

A smart politician must be able to understand the intricate, yet vital connect between Dayak politics and national politics. Taib saw and understood this 50 years ago!  And he smartly maneuvers his political move to achieve his ambitions.

As long as UMNO  & federal officers support Taib regime & as long as Taib able to pacify UMNO leaders with his immense wealth & deliver BN election victories ~ the road to capturing Sarawak in next election by Pakatan Rakyat is extremely difficult & may prove futile.

Can we undo what Taib has done to Sarawak

I am not trying to be cynical and neither am I optimistic that, out of the blue, emerge a Dayak Chief Minister and undo the damages that the Taib administration had done to this lovely land we called home!

Power of the media

Each time during election, I felt sick and tired of the lies & antagonizing newsreaders trying to play the people sentiment to support the BN. In Sarawak, use of threat and intimidation – such as deprivation of development fund or victimization has worked well in the past.

RTM relentlessly selling propaganda praising BN for superb past performance are forced down our throat. Borneo Post or ET would instigate voters against opposition & highlight opposition failures & not giving opposition fair chance to rebut.

The challenge to PR is how to outdo these BN media tools? In Kelantan, PAS conducted around 30 to 40 ceramahs every day even during non-election time! Can PR match that feat in Sarawak? Do we have the stamina and resources to do so?

Wild Guess

My wild guess is ~ post Taib era, we Dayak will still be as divided as ever, or even worst. If this happens, we can only shed tears, my hearts goes to our kids – what is in store for them in future? But I (like most of you do) still harbor that wishful thinking – a “transformed JJM” or Tajem or Salang (to name a few) be our savior! Also not to discount people in the like of Baru Bian, Idris Jala, Dominique Ng or Dr John Brian?

Consider this political scenario – Taib cunningly appoint Jabu to be the next CM so as to deceive Dayak: will history repeat itself similar to Tawi Sli appointment by Rahman to replace Ningkan? Prove that I am wrong and we will rejoice together.

Thanks

Iban Baru.

Good article. Dayak seem to be still in the darkness in next 100 years if still in Malaysia under Malaysian mode of Democracy created by BN. It look like that Dayak are helpless but not hopeless.

Lets we start with our hope. Dayak have the right to open the book of 18 point Sarawak Joining Malaysia. Dayak have the right to protect their Right with whatever mean. Dayak have the right to join the international community to pursue their right. Dayak have the right to pull Sarawak out from Malaysia in the case that 18 points are not properly maintained and Dayak are not satisfied with Federation of Malaysia. Dayak have the right to bycott the BN election if they found it too much undemocratic. Dayak have the right to join the main opposition party from Malaya to clear out the discrimination by BN.

A very well said article, quite natural and neutral in it messages. It really open up our minds and keep us thinking of it truthfullness, wisefulness, awarefulness and aceptablefulness of it contains. The messages is clear and presented in a well organised manner and made its acceptable to the minds for safe keeping.

    Thank you.

Good article Iban baru. I still believe JJM will come good at the right time. Idris Jala is a great man & good character. I believe he can gell all sarawakian as a whole. He got certain attribute to be a great leader and shakers. Above
all he got the ability to make thing happen. His track record speak for itseft.

    Iban Baru and DayakBaru readers,

I am not as hopeful or as uncertain as you, in respect to what may happen after Taib. The man is not alone. So his departure from the scene will not erase the legacy of his rule. Even if a few political personalities were to switch side, absolutely nothing will change.

The rot and the stench in Sarawak politic is so buried deeply in the soil of this land that I don’t foresee any light at the end of the tunnel unless there is an equivalent of a cataclysmic event to uproot the structure. Will revisit the “cataclysmic” bit later but for now, 2 factors will ensure Taib legacy will stick around like the leaches in Sarawak forest – for sometimes to come.

    1. The state BN loyalist from among politicians & d businessman, alike who are beneficiaries of the Taib system, will not want to change and give up the privileged positions, in pursuit of democratic reforms.Among these are the who’s who of political and economic elites of the state. In fact, Taib’s rule is not unlike those of a regime which will be driven, even more towards unity – instead of disintegration, when the regime is under threat – such as when Taib depart the scene. The regime will collapse if there were to be merciless jockeying for positions in the aftermath but current indication suggest the scenario is highly unlikely. The next strongest in the regime has been positioned for the succession planning and those who had exhibited any hint of disloyalty to the regime has been flung into the political wilderness.Interestingly enough, the family is also well position, to perpetuate its interest – even if the regime were to crack.

    2. In the big political game, of national politics Sarawak is a prize catch not only for the number of MPs but for the wealth that still in the low hanging fruit category (public sector contracts, timber concession, oil palm land bank, etc) and well within the reach of any politically astute and BN-connected individuals. So the national BN will pour its massive resource to Sarawak, through pre-existing delivery systems which the opposing camp can never match. Unlike in some states in the Peninsular, we all know that in Sarawak, as Ong and Tiong would remind us recently, money not only talks – it also votes. The more money, the more the gearing ratio.

Now for the “cataclysmic” bit: to restate it again, nothing short of a major groundswell of opposition like the monks demonstration in Burma, or those of the color-coded revolution in the Philippines, Georgia or Thailand, will be capable of dislodging the regime from Sarawak political system – within our life time.

But lets not forget the simple truth that the peoples street protest such as those that happens in Iran will be similarly crushed – and viciously. The regime has all the apparatus of the state to protect its existence – and it will not recoil even if thousands were to die. Heck, even the poor and undernourished Penans blockades of timber routes are often crushed with the full might of the police field force as during the Communist Insurgency. Some activists have been reported missing and some were found dead.

Worst still the plights of Dayaks, typical of the plight of indigenous people all over the world, does not generate enough sympathy from the world at large. The small band that are sympathetic to the Penans seems more sympathetic towards the wild life than the folks themselves. Borneo does have any geopolitic significance for it to have any allies beyond those who are interested in it for the economic pie – most of whom would gravitate towards the government of the day, and would even support the government to minimize risk to their investment.

So, bottomline: what hope is there for change – for the future of our children ? And I’m addressing this to the smartest of our DayakBaru readers.

If there is any hope at all, it will rely on patience and persistence. By that, I mean for:-

    1. The handful of Dayaks who are not embedded with the regime and are hunger for change, to learn to build world class alliance with folks and body politics who share similar strategic objective – to rid Sarawak of the regime ! No more Politics of Development that create a patronage system; no more Konsep Baru that hand over the land to the big corporations at the expense of real capacity building and human development in rural areas. But we must create alliance on sound principles of good governance, live not by the creed of the emotional form of Dayakism – but by the modern intellectual form (spice with emotion if need be). It means we must not be too quick to make friends or enemies, but to have the discipline to think outside of the perimeters of parochialism. Most importantly – to think of not just to get rid of the regime, but to dismantle the structural condition that gave rise to such excess, so it will never happen again.

    2. Sustained, tireless actions to expose the truths and the unethical ways of the regime within the bounds of the law (to be safe). The effect would be to engage the fringe members and sympathizers of the regime, and to educate the masses that the regime need for electoral support. It would be a slow, movement of thoughts across class culture; which has the might of the media to contain with. At some point, the slow awakening should reach a critical mass – for a cataclysmic event of sorts, to take place. People must surely understand that PR recent electoral success had been building up from the early beginnings of PAS and DAP, decades ago. To think that the PR win will catapult Sarawak politics to modernity, is stretching it.

I would be very happy to be proven wrong, if it should happen – not that I wish him harm – that the departure of Taib would herald the end of our cause for blogging here – sometimes late into the night. One word of advise: best to err on the conservative side, and work our bit to get rid of the regime and all it stands for.

As the trully dayak spirits, to me the faster Taib disappear from Sarawak politic is the better. He is the only obstacle for dayaks to go further in some games of top political post. Maju Dayak.

Iban Baru: “I believe also that if there is a technology to enable him to live another 100 years, I am sure he is willing and capable to purchase the technology! But the Almighty holds our last card ~ everybody goes when the time comes!”

–Actually not a technology but a rather semi-primitive decoy: Body Double. Yang Dikasihi that we see now could be another Papa-Look-Alikes. Not really a multi-billion tech job to do some DNA cloning or face transplant. Other than that probably using Fake Death ploy so that Yang Dikasihi can finally rest elsewhere with all the loots preferably in Swiss village or Alice Springs in Australia.

Looking at how long Yaakub still live nearly 100 years of age now then Yang Dikasihi will still got many years left to trail.

“My wild guess is ~ post Taib era, we Dayak will still be as divided as ever, or even worst.”

–Exactly. Once SPDP-PRS merged(hurrah?), Yang Dikasihi will mess it up (as usual) with the same goons and all their seats slowly taken by PBB, reaching almost 2/3 DUN seats.

“But I (like most of you do) still harbor that wishful thinking – a “transformed JJM” or Tajem or Salang (to name a few) be our savior!”

–”As a Dayak, that is the correct thing to do”…by finishing off Dayak dead and gone, once and for all.

“Also not to discount people in the like of Baru Bian, *Idris Jala, Dominique Ng or Dr John Brian?”

–Sounds like a dream team but Pakatan must ensure one thing first: straight fight BN vs Pakatan (which PKR and DAP failed to do like Stampin MP seat and let that SUPP old dino wins and do nothing as federal deputy works minister). Work well with DAP(recommend more Dayak DAP candidates). Do not neglect SNAP(Some Dayak still loves SNAP). Don’t scared with PAS (utilise that 30,000 muslim Dayaks).
*Idris Jala then will be sabotaged by Umno like S’ngor MB Khalid…never manage Umno GLCs!

“Consider this political scenario – Taib cunningly appoint Jabu to be the next CM so as to deceive Dayak: will history repeat itself similar to Tawi Sli appointment by Rahman to replace Ningkan? Prove that I am wrong and we will rejoice together.”

–Really? Another dynasty (but a short one) like Dinasti Buah Kepayang in the making? How would the new Salcra HQ building deemed fit as Wisma J*bu as it looks small to the new throne then. Come on Iban Baru…do not try to speculate Buah Kepayang oil to jump RM3,500 per tonne anytime soon. You want to speculate? How about a timber king Foochow CM? Now that would make not only the Dayak but the rest Malay Melanau Hakka Hokkien HengHua Teochew Hainan some Indians all up in protest!

  10. dayaklama on August 27th, 2009 5:42 pm

Economically Dayak Iban must be self dependent only then you can talk big. For time being save more money, invest your money in ASB,ASN or buy house to rent out. Provide good education to your children. The ASB, ASN are an examples from many others the affirmative action under NEP which also includes MRP, atap etc..which the non bumiputera did not have privelege. These was introduced by the BN gomen to help the poor.Don’t spend much on drinking, cock fighting, good clothing, latest fashion of hollywood stars or womanising. Improve yourself first only then the chinese, melanaus or other Dayaks would believe that you are capable people.
Don’t worry about the CM position first as PBB has well groom leader to replace Taib and of course from the “bin” family and definitely not Jabu.

Well, nice article brought up by Iban-Baru, I am extremely NOT agreed if none of dayaks smarter than Aki Taib. Why not you do your appropriate research, get the statistic “HOW many Dayaks holding PHD & Master Degrees” The only thing is matter of opportunity, chances and individual insurable interest.

Iban-Baru, we must think this simply philosophy (FROM THE MOON WE CAN SEE THE WHOLE EARTH, BUT FROM THE EARTH WE CAN’T SEE WHOLE THE MOON)

hey ELLY. kamu tau tak kenapa tak ramai org dayak dapat PHD, MASTER OR DEGREE…sebabnya ialah manusia seperti ini. maybe banyak juga yang dia bantu tapi most of them not dayak people. sebab berlakunya diskriminasi di malaysia. org yng berpengatahuan dan sentiasa menyiasat politik saya yang tahu…apa yang bapa dan emak saya yg berada dirumah panjang sana tahu..bukan nya ada komputer, radio kalau ada pun bukan nya nak siarkan perkara buruk yg kerajaan lakukan. baru saja saya terima keputusan JPA yg saya tak dapat tawaran biasiswa itu, sedang kan ramai bangsa diaorg yang dapat walaupun keputusan diaorng sama malah ada yg kurang. diskriminasi juga berlaku dalam permilihan kursus. let me tell you, kat UTM yang ada bangsa dayak cuma saya seorng saja. takkan dari beberapa ribu pelajar keluaran MATRIK labuan tak ada seorg pun apply course ini selain saya. it just a simple example. belum lagi seluruh malaysia. disitu kita nampak bahawa bangsa kami disekat dari mendapatkan peljaran yg tinggi. kalau kerja pun diaorg sama juga. so apalah erti 1 malaysia. lagu just ada tiga bangsa ja yg masuk, but dimanakah bangsa kita sabah and sarawak. well takpa la sekarang, maybe perubahan tu tak sepantas kilat, munyi ko iban ngelipat ke buluh ari tubu ia.

Why not appoint IDRIS JALA as new CHIEF MINISTER OF SARAWAK?

Taib has long being ‘EXPIRED’ -35 years -just imagine that!
Even the President of USA term limited to 2 terms/10 years?

  24. Dyaks on August 29th, 2009 9:19 pm

ClaudeTown: “Why not appoint IDRIS JALA as new CHIEF MINISTER OF SARAWAK?”

Yes why not. Idris Jala name sounds Malay enough even Pak Lah thought so. The 18 point agreement does state some compromise on Malay and Dayak holding the CM post or TYT post but Idris Jala fits equally both on Malay (name visually) AND Dayak (pure and simple).

As customary for Sarawak CM to keep some bomoh, Dayaklama would be equally an ideal appointment as Bomoh Dirghayu Kenyalang…to assist CM Jala predicting whom the next state govt shall be.

  25. CharcoalArt on September 1st, 2009 12:55 pm

I tend to agree with you guys. But it is a quantum leap if we were to find ourselves to be much better after Taib is no more CM – my bet is there won’t be much changes.

Never mind big changes. Small changes are important too. Lets say, start with minimise “burning longhouses”. How much properties, artifacts, pesaka, etc. had the Dayak lost to fires for many years? How much valuable heritages such as old spears, terabai, ilang and nyabur had been bunt due to longhouses on fire. Many Dayaks are educated in the 21st century but none of us are daring enough to say “NO” to the longhouse design. We intend to stay status quo forever, fire or no fire.

How could we then be successfully taking care of ourselves in the post Taib era when the Dayaks cannot even handle the decision concerning our well beings, our homes, our longhouses. It really makes me lost for word.

“Why not appoint IDRIS JALA as new CHIEF MINISTER OF SARAWAK?”

Only if he has “Bin” in between the Idris & Jala.

Najib appointing Idris Jala as CM that would means political temperature may slow down for a while for us dayaks. political gimmick by BN only. we need a dayak that is not controlled by anyone
