Sixty years Contract

60 taun contract!

That’s a long period of time anything could happen during those period. The person who is signing the contract will never see the contract end. The party who come out with this contract is like a judge who punish an offender of law with life sentence in a prison. So, anybody who is signing those contract in my personal view, not others view; is signing a life sentence jail warrant.

Maybe my stances is a little bit of conservative but this is the reality of a world we live now. Do not ever expect Mr Taib Mahmud will do such a kind and charitable things to us.

For you dayaklama, you rather sound ridiculous like our present day dayak politician did.

Helping dayak is not by sending them into space. Living in space is only a dream of visionary, we are not yet settle in our very own land and don’t we ever think like these visionaries to travel into outer space.

Live in the land we are born to and make this land a prosperous land before we proceed into other things. In Kelantan, Felcra just distribute RM11.28 million to 2,452 participants and each participant receive RM 4,600 for this year. This is their hari raya goodies. Meaning that, in a month they only own RM383.

They are still a poor folks if they only depend on this money to live their life. Therefore, if we be the same participant we are belong to the same poor folks. I am not saying I am rich now, I am also the same poor man like them but the difference is I am determine to change this bad luck by not accepting a bad agreement offer to me.

Talk Less more Action

If BN is really sincere in moulding dayak community into a developing community, what they should do is less talk and more action. This is what we want to see. Right now they talk here and there, promise here and there, visit here and there. In the end, we got zero, nothing from them. Is this a sincererity mean to us?

First thing first.

Send back the money they take from us. Money they take from our land. Put this money into an infrastructure development. Build a nice road for us linking town to town, village to village, build a proper school for us to educated our children, build a hospital for us to treat our sick people, build a bridge for us to crossover to a next land, build anything that will benefit us. Right now, we didn’t see they really work like what they say. No new building school for SK Nanga.. or SK Long.. whatsoever.

Still no road linking Kapit and Sibu.

Even Mr. Taib has made such promise during his recent visit to Kapit. Still no hospital at Lubok Antu. Still no.. and no.. how many NO did we have since they command and conquer our land for the last 46 years. We haven’t yet come to 60 years yet and again they offer us to sign another agreement for 60 years.

Are they insane?

Are they? Or it is our fault in choosing the wrong kingdom to rule us? Are we choosing the Kingdom of Heaven or Kingdom of Hell now? If we had make mistake, it is not too late to take a big U turn and correct it.

Start a new fresh again.

You don’t have to compare Sarawak to Kelantan. Sarawak has massive land still unexplore. What you should agree with the BN gomen is to open all this vast uncultivated land and plant with palm trees, the return will be bigger. If all this land is develop then only you can expect the infrastructures will reach every corners of Sarawak. This is the only practical way to bring development as you requested, or else where you can get the fund? To link roads to all areas even scarcely populated is not economical and practical.
This is how DL sees it or you can still wait but it would be rather slow without developing the land.To run the country economy is the same is running the family daily affairs, you cannot lavishly spending.. afterall nothing to spend anyway if you don’t have the source.
Everything got to come with price to pay. Don’t get too emotional with this, just treat this as to whet the appetite of DB readers.

I hope the oil palm will not squeeze the land for some ambitious rural folks to explore another kind of cultivation/development. Once the area is taken over by oil palm scheme planted by companies, their scheme will occupy much bigger space and leave little room for another development by any hardworking Dayaks/Iban. No government wants to construct roads to link to no man’s land if they don’t have a prawn behind the stone. In my personal opinion, the government can still be sincere building road and encourage individual farmers to cultivate their land. The objective of the goverment is to provide infrastructure for the people but it must be done not to bring all the ‘eagles’ into the areas. These eagles are simply opportunist companies.
I have with people in my village clearing land for their paddy each year and at the end of the harvest is converted in oil palm scheme. Over many years or ten of years, an individual has succeeded in planting 10 hills of oil palm. No sweat. Enda berasai, peda nyau besai meh dandang sawit unggal nya.

Idea unggal DL nya nyau baka ke penemu burong menaul ga diperatika aku. Jejimatka unggal ngaga sengapa jalai agai menua Iban. Kitai menua Sarawak tu sigi mayuh pengasu beburu babi kampung, rusa, kijang. Enti udah datai jalai, sigi peneka urang luar meh ke datai ari menua sengapa, peneka rembang ngasu beburu, belampatka sida babi rusa ba damun temuda, berika semah empurau ba ai sungai sida Iban dulu din. Kitai mesti ka jejimat ngena penemu lama unggal DL nya, kaban.

    DL,

Its make sense, Oil Palm Plantation and Hydro Dam can provides some infrastructure, multiple the income of rural people especially Dayak and at the same time safe guard our future and put our state in steady income.

But provided that the present gomen make a PROPER MoU, Policy and regulation. To get this proper MoU is always hardess part of BN. Cos the MoU is usually siding the investor, gomen and leave the rural fork behind.

Look at Wong Irup. It is good if the project develop base on the promises when it started. Road should be tarred, housing Free, Telephone line provide, Electricity Free, 12 acres Land provide with tittle, compensation base on present market land value, share base on agreement, Technical School provide, Hospital provide, job opportunity give priority to local, business opportunity give priority to local, Service Centre Construct, Bank provide, Fund for Local, Watch Committee for the Local, Cottage Industry and etc.

We can’t imagine that how developed Lubok Antu is if this promises are utilized. But 30 years passed all of these are just a sad story.

To get the proper MoU and Regulation on any mega project affecting the Dayak, the gomen cannot leave out SDNU, SDGA, NGO even opposition in policy maker, MoU regulator and project coordinator, even in hard nego or take much time. Only than win-win situation can be prevail.

    Iban Abroad,

Udah enda ringat agi nuan? Bakanya meh enti ka main politik mesti tebal pending baru olih ba atas dia.

Your prosposal is indeed good but not practical. In business who has the money is always at the upper hand, that’s reality. When you loan a car through the bank and after let say seven years, you lost a considerably high amount in paying the interest rate. Why nobody make a noise about it? or that is fair agreement because the reason is you cannot live without the car. The bank can always say you take it or you leave it, isn’t it? It’s indeed an embarassing situation where you get to be interviewed to get into trouble to convince the bank officer in willingness to pay more.

In this JV we are talking about billions with considering times of waiting these trees to bear fruits and other expenditures as well. There are no such things as really fair and square in business. Remember you cannot put them into the situation where we want a dream car. They can always go and venture into other profitable business nature.

Anang baka unggal Hawong enggai dipansa jalai alun enggai ka jani kampung di menua ia pupus. Bakani ka maju enti ngembuan Hj Adi mentaliti. Siang malam betajung.

Only than win-win situation can be prevail.)

The Flawed Infrastructure Argument in NCR Land Development Scheme

I have heard the arguments many times before that oil palm schemes are means to provide infrastructure – roads, electricity, clinics, schools – to an otherwise inaccessible area.
Sounds reasonable at face value, since infrastructure are cost-intensive, with delayed returns on investment, except until one examine this in detail:

    1. The scope and cost of the infrastructure that the JV will construct for itself in order to gain access to the land area were never scoped/costed as part of a public bidding process. The fundamental flaw in the argument is to assign intent, without evidence. In fact, there is no bidding – period.

    2. Provision of Infrastructure in every countries is the duty of the government, without sacrificing millions of hectares, of public land asset. If there is any evidence, that any of the State-built road were paid for by the oil palm companies, in exchange for a huge tract of land, that does not count as smart partnership, or Malaysia Inc. Such arrangements, if it exist,is an abuse of power on the part of the state government – a corrupt practice.

    3. If infrastructure development are deliberately withheld until the people in the area agree to implement govt-sponsored land development scheme that do not benefit the people in the area itself, then that would be called coercive policies on the part of the government, and is a sure evidence of predatory practise i.e opportunist work in cahoot behind the scenes to enrich themselves.

    4. Many gravel roads built around the perimeter of, and running the gamut of an oil palm plantation, does not provide access to agriculture land adjacent to the plantation. In all cases, these roads would be blocked – and effectively reduce the ability of people in the area to gain access to their own land.

    5. Basic country roads made of gravel seems to be everywhere in Peninsular Malaysia. I doubt if a typical 10 KM ring road that can serve a few thousand agri-base population in a sub-district would cost anywhere near an overhead bypass that city planners are happily competing with each other to build. If these gravel roads were to be built in Sarawak, imagine the benefit to small holders such as those Akiq Hawong mention.

First, it was dividend. Now – infrastructure ? Both does not convinced me. I hope no one else will be fooled – ever again.
