Reasons why BN will lose in Sarawak

Posted by Indai Temuai

BN is no longer popular to the younger generation in Sarawak

It is just the matter of time, BN Sarawak will no longer be popular to the younger generations of Malay, moderate Chinese; the Dayak Baru will definitely support PKR.

It’s not because they hate the BN present govt, but it is because the people realize the person / leaders inside the govt are corrupted, snoring and known for their sleeping habits.

It is also not because like PKR party, but it is because they do not have a choice, and so they would vote of the opposition’s candidate, so that the oppositions would win and the BN government in Sarawak will be defeated in the next GE.

Looking forward to the next State Election

The people also notice that these present BN leaders are too powerful and nothing much the rakyat (at the moment) can do to remove them from their present seats. So the people would have to wait for the next GE, where the power or mandates are given back to the people to vote for their chosen leaders. And this time they vote for leaders that have the aspirations, dedications to serve the people, his own community.

Dayak political leaders are so afraid of the CM

In fact, it’s kind of amusing that most Dayak politicians or leaders today are so afraid of our CM because they themselves are also afraid that the CM would lists down all their wrong doings while they are in power. If you don’t rock my boat, I won’t rock yours. So, it is always a strategic way to remain silent and pretend they do not know what’s happening.

Leaders looking at their rice bowl only

Ignorance is bliss. I solemnly say, today we see leaders are taking care of their own rice bowls. The sizes of the bowls are getting bigger and bigger each day, but how much rice you can eat?

Agendas that would be use by the oppositions that will create these changes to the government in Sarawak:

1. The recent case of the Penans being manipulated, abused, rapped and victim of so called modernization. BN Deputy Chief CM in a state of denial

2. NCR lands issues not being addressed professionally by Dayak politicians. The Bidayuh’s most cases of their lands have not been titled.

3. Non legal actions have been taken against timber companies that invade natives’ lands for enriching their timber business. Ironically, the Penans in which their homeland being destroyed being taken to police custody. Their rights have not been forwarded.

4. Leasehold lands in Sarawak. People have to beg the government to provide those discounts or extension of periods. Because of this, most banks refuse to grant loans in which the property becomes collaterals.

5. Corruptions, cronyism, nepotism in almost every sector of government projects, licenses, permit given, granted to family related business of politicians. No complaints were dared by ordinary Sarawakians.

6. Development lagging behind. Sarawak is a very rich state but we still lack of infrastructures, literacy, schools, and roads to rural areas, but Sarawak continues to build more dams instead of focusing on education and food programs.

7. Abuse of power by politicians, government heads and police. The use into extortionist’s politicians to negate with their nemesis.

8. The ordinary fellow Chinese, minority states Indians has been denied rights for scholarships, granted proper educations in government schools. The ordinary Malays feel the Melanos Muslims communities are just too much.

9. Disbursements of government loans and incentives not given to ordinary Chinese or non Dayak traders to setup and built their businesses. These prejudices has further numbered the ‘loan sharks’ business in the state.

10. The BN politicians wanting to left behind legacy and dynasty. It has become a father and sons, mother and daughter ruling. The Sarawak state is nothing different compared to communisms and absolute monarchy. Outsiders who are sincere to built harmony in Sarawak are forced to leave the state immediately or denied entry into the state.

11. BN Sarawak modern ways of massive colonization against poor ethnics such as the Penan, Punan, the ordinary natives. Even the Dayak politicians are indirectly being ‘colonized and ‘majestic’ rule.

12. Censorship of media, printed publications by authorities of Sarawak.

13. Sarawak state positioned the last queue in terms of transparency, integrity and fairness. In oral and theory, the state top lists of the most corrupted states.

14. Delaying cases for years and years in courts especially on some crucial issues of lands and law suits in the hope that people would grow old and sick, natural death and some would eventually forgets (short memory / memory loss) of the pending cases.

    ………………………………………….

    Correct Indai.
Your observation is similar to mine. More n more younger Dayak generation are against the govt. DL, could be correct in some way as some of us are not registered yet. Once this grp is registered voters and ppl having the mentality like DL,UC,AE n oth disappear fm the political scene, hopefully, their number will become dwindling. I dun c how their number could be growing compare to the number of registered youngsters, ever increasing by the day through greater awareness in protecting the Dayak rights and what not. More and more youngster have witnessed the rampant cases of unacceptable treatment of Dayaks by the ruling govt. Ppl like Kenyalang and Baya Burak just to name a few of us here who are still learning and could hv some influence in determining the course of the govt in fvr of change for d betterment of the Dayak.

Once these youngsters are all registered, through their influences, then the voice could be clearly heard. It should not then be considered as TALKING BIG only. I am sure the gvt is gonna be scared.

Dyaklama will not be easily conned but you should know that we are young and you are old. May God bless u to live another 60 more yrs so that U could go thru’ a number of elections to witness the change tt we dream of.

    Cheers…

    To dayaklama.

You need to change your penname.
I would assume you to be a dayak being dayaklama.
If you are not and just a BN ballcarrier, fine.
If you are, you are not worhty to use the word dayak as it is disgusting for you to represent the dayak. Make an announcing that you are now called BNlama, cocklama, enginelama or whatever lama to suit you.
After all what the Dayaks went through all these past years, you speak for yourself only, not for the Dayaks.

We and not a single right thinking person, are not against the government. It is the ways and directions that they are working into which can prove to be futile for the future generation, if not addressed.
To play racism and religion affects every rakyat. We are a secular country by virtue of the constitution and the “18 points agreement” when we “formed” not “joined” Malaysia.
A lot had gone beyond these documented papers which is just mere papers now. When there is something that benefits the BN, the constitution is made reference to. When it is against it, it is very subdued and quiet.
Simple logic, why is so many negative things said about the way we are governed?
Are they being said for the sake of saying?
Are they being commented for the sake of commenting?
Are they being remarked just for remarking?
Are they being challenged for the sake of challenging?
Are there efforts to remedy them?
Are there efforts to address them?
Seems they(BN)are more arrogant even after loosing 5 states with one state return to them illegally.
Opposition do not opposed for sake of opposing?
    Opposition are reasonable people.
Opposition are people who see things from a different angle that see thing not conducive to the nation and rakyats.
Opposition see that corporate governance are not not place.
Opposition are not against the government but what the government does that are improper.
Opposition seeks redress of things done wrong.
When things are done properly, opposition will be seen as a silly fool to oppose. Which of the things opposition opposed are silly? It is not a single person’s decision to oppose certain issues. It is a consensus and only the blind in BN does not see it as they are involved one way or the other. we do not believe the opposition will survive when the BN is running the country properly or in the way it should be managed correctly.
Opposition as a name may sound antagonistic. Should be called like “benchmarkers”, “checkers”, “prefects”, etc etc so that their efforts will be listened and actioned.
Done for the sake of doing?
Printed for the sake of printing?
Informed for the sake of just informing?

CHEERS EVERYBODY esp. Indai and Cikgu Iban:
Both of you have good visions about the spirit of the young voters. There are obviously some myopics around us but they are dwindling in numbers. That is very true.

Some of those already in their twilight zones deserve our sympathies. Not all are blind but somehow the could have been ‘blindfolded’,and that they still pretend not to know that our REBAK BARU are no longer confined to our retarded longhouse surroundings.

It is a matter of time when we will see the CHANGE taking place. And Change we MUST.

Dear puzzled, there has and never will be 1Malaysia under this regieme. We want an accountable, noncorrupitble, transparent and a caring leadership who fights for the rights of the poor, weak and marginalised while upholding justice and righteousness. This is not want we have not been getting for the past 30+ years.

Whenever the ruling authorities fail to ‘touch base’ oe ‘earth’ themselves with the ground and go back to thre roots of their power, they become expendable. By hypocrisy – in ideology, speech and action, they have proven to be the feudal-fascist, religio-ethnocentric excuse for humanity and spamming.

Just a small divergence – what do you think if only 10% of the money that will be spent on the so-called 1Malaysia F1 2010 racing team be spent on rehabilitation of these displaced Penans and Kenyahs? Another 70% to build more schools, clinics and basic infrastructure in the inteior of Sarawak and the last 30% to subsidize the people who had suffered tremendously after buying Potongs?

    ‘Driven by Greed’

Sim Kwang Yang, an opposition member of parliament for Sarawak’s capital city of Kuching from 1982 to 1995, agrees with Anwar’s assessment. “It is crony capitalism driven by greed without any regard for the people,” he says.

Taib’s adult children and his late wife, Lejla, together owned more than 29.3 percent of Cahya Mata Sarawak Bhd., the state’s largest industrial group, with 40 companies involved in construction, property development, road maintenance, trading and financial services, according to the company’s 2008 annual report.

Local residents jokingly say that the company’s initials, CMS, stand for “Chief Minister and Sons.”

In total, CMS has won about 1.3 billion ringgit worth of projects from the state and the federal government since the beginning of 2005, according to the firm’s stock exchange filings.

Taib declined to comment for this article. In an interview he gave to Malaysia’s state news agency, Bernama, on Jan. 13, 2001, Taib said CMS’s ties to him had nothing to do with its winning government jobs.

  12. Stephen Tang on September 29th, 2009 12:41 pm

    ‘Not Involved’ in Contracts

“I am not involved in the award of contracts,” he said. “No politician in Sarawak is involved in the award of contracts.”

He told Bernama he doesn’t ask for special treatment of his sons. “I never ask anybody to do any favors,” he said.

Mahmud Abu Bekir Taib, the elder of Taib’s two sons, is CMS’s deputy chairman and owns 8.92 percent of the firm, according to the annual report. Sulaiman Abdul Rahman Taib, the younger son and CMS’s chairman until 2008, holds an 8.94 percent stake.

Taib’s two daughters and his son-in-law are also listed in the annual report as “substantial shareholders.”

  13. Stephen Tang on September 29th, 2009 12:45 pm

    Government ‘Cruel’

“The government is cruel,” says Jengga Jeli, 54, a father of five in Lebor. “Fruit trees have been cut down. It’s become harder to hunt and fish. Now we are forced to get meat and vegetables from the bazaar, and we are very poor.” Jengga’s village filed a lawsuit in 1998 against Nirwana, LCDA and the state government in a bid to get compensation.

The case was finally heard in 2006 and is now awaiting judgment, according to Baru Bian, who is representing the Iban in Kampung Lebor. Reginal Kevin Akeu, a lawyer at Abdul Rahim Sarkawi Razak Tready Fadillah & Co. Advocates, which is representing Nirwana and LCDA, declined to comment.

The cases show that the development projects, including plantations and dams, haven’t helped poverty among the local people, many of whom live without adequate electricity or schools, says Richard Leete, who served as the resident representative of the United Nations Development Program for Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei from 2003 to 2008.

Since 1997, Petronas has handed out a staggering 30 Billion Ringgit in natural gas subsides to IPPs who are already making massive profits. In addition there were much wastages and forward trading of Petronas oil in the 1990’s based on the low price of oil then. The accounts of Petronas are for the eyes of the Prime Minster only we have absolutely no idea of the amount!

All the UKOI KURAP of the BN fear the BN would lose power come next SE or GE. In a Long House in the Baram the Penghulu and a govt servant from the same longhouse threaten to file complaints regarding registration of voters done by individuals not with the consent of the Penghulu. According to that Penghulu, the SPR is under his jurisdiction. He strongly believes that he has the absolute power to choose who ‘may’ and who ‘may not’ register to vote. This ‘BN picked’ penghulu does not like to register young voters. To him; No BN no money, no ‘kantau’ from the companies that rob the NCR land of the kampung folks. That is why some Tuai Rumah and Penghulus are acting strange these days. Mediocre BN dogs mentality! And a govt servant is acting no better than the Penghulu. He fully support the penghulu’s bashing of the church goers in a church. A Govt servant, not A politican. This govt servant does not know from where his salary comes from. Servant! Servant! Counting beans for the master who is also the servant of the RAKYAT. Has the SPA circular been amended yet to allow govt servants to become politicans at the same time? Better check this out.

s expected Sarawak deputy chief Tan Sri Alfred Jabu Numpang questioned the findings of a federal ministerial task force report over alleged rapes on Penan girls in upper Baram – even before he actually read it.

“Although I have not seen the actual report from a task force set up by the federal government, I believe negative NGOs are behind the report. There may be a report, but you must remember that negative NGOs were behind it,” Jabu reporters here.

When reports of rape and sexual abuse were first reported by the media last year, Jabu who is in charge of Penan affairs was the first to deny it.

He accused NGOs of deliberately lying in order to tarnish the image of the state government.

Now when the report has been released confirming that rapes and sexual abuse did occur, Jabu questioned the credibility of the report and again, accused negative NGOs of being behind it.

UMNO still don’t know & talk nonsense. The claim is we still got tons of reserves in US dollars. If not pump more oil & tax the rakyat more. Built more highways & more tolls, easy money. Then, put everything under OSA and live happily ever after. A huge waste of money project is the so call national service — but some UMNO fellas are making good money from supplying food, uniforms etc. The same ideals in this national service are easily achieve in the school education system. Wasting, losing & pocketing money is actually part of doing business UMNO style. To lose money is OK, then charge to govt. If make money, goes to pocket so whats the difference, semua jadi kaya. Ever heard of any heads rolling yet from the govt. in such lossess? Mana ada. So, korek lagi lah sebab semua OK. I am just sick of such bailouts, wanton lossess & mismanagement. Surely the overall picture tells us we don’t have any capable ministers in this govt and this we need to address in any by-election & coming GE13 by putting in a new govt that is accountable.

Have you ever asked yourself one question, i.e. do you really expect things in Malaysia to be done properly? I mean, you seriously expect the Malaysian-way-of-doing-things to be of good standard?

Upon my return from HK last week, something screwed up during baggage-claim. I will not go into details but it created a lot of frustration. Amidst the ruckus, an elderly man blurted — “This so silly, such a disgrace!”. With so many gwai-los (“Caucasians”) around, he was probably feeling a bit embarrassed.

Indeed, the usual ramblings by Malaysians…

“Our toilets are horrible. What a disgrace!”
“People send astronaut to do research in space, our astronaut went all the way up there to make roti canai. What a disgrace!”
“Actually right, NASA only considers him as a space-tourist. What a disgrace!”
“Look at our highway resting place – dirty and run-down. What a disgrace!”
“Malaysia has been blacklisted by OECD together with Costa Rica, Uruguay and Philippines. What a disgrace!”
“Oh, Malaysia has been removed. But only to the grey list, what a disgrace!”
“Our country, always in international news for the wrong reason(s). What a disgrace!”
“After 20 years, Proton still can’t get things right. What a disgrace!”
“Worse, Proton Waja heavily criticised in Top Gear. What a disgrace!”
“Simple thing like post-flight-baggage-claim can’t be done properly. What a disgrace!”

    Care to contribute some?

The efects of corruption in Malaysia. Quoted…..

All the corruption money paid, is eventually passed back to the people. It is charged to them. Malays must know that they are indirectly paying for it, including the govt wastages, hence they remain poor. Approximately 30% of our spending goes to indirect taxes. Bribes paid are factored into that!

Very true…Corruption so deep so ingrained…right up to the Rulers, down to floor sweeper. How does one battle these crooks when every turn you make is like a check mate. The Laws are useless and has been for 52 years. The sooner the Revolution and Boycott starts the better it will be for Malaysia. If Barisan Rakyat take power we need an IGP from Overseas like England to clean the Corruption and cover up Mess.

We have not even started about STUPID Projects with no contribution to a better Malaysia like Tumpangnaut, PKFZ, 3 types of light rail track, proton…….When will Malaysian learn…..on death bed??

I am ashamed to say that the Chinese, in particular the businessmen and gangsters, are at the root of Malaysia’s corruption. They have the money and want to make more money as quickly possible. Just look at the list of Mahathir’s very successful cronies – most of them are Chinese such as Vincent Tan, Loh Kim Yew, Ling Liong Sik, Francis Yeoh, etc., etc. It is this greed on the part of the Chinese that prevented the fall of BN in the 1999 GE – the Chinese bailed out Mahathir when the Malays had overwhelmingly deserted UMNO for PAS and Keadilan. Why? Because they were prepared to overlook the evil deeds of Mahathir directed at Anwar for the sake of Mahathir’s and UMNO’s patrongage to continue to make money. So PAS alone is not at fault in overlooking corruption. The Chinese and Indians must also say “NO” to corruption. Only then can we have a progressive nation.

his is the type of postings that most M’sians need to be told. It is not that they can’t see the effect. It is because they CANNOT IMAGINE how much they and their relatives & their friends could be so much better off WITHOUT such SYSTEMIC CORRUPTION ingrained.

If you have the chance, bring your children overseas to have a look at a first world country (other than Singapore) & take them to have a look at Myanmar coz we are going to be just like Myanmar if this corruption continues. The cost is a Police State to safeguard themselves & their political masters because the former Taiwanese President Chen Shui Bian’s story behind bars is too taxing for them to contemplate.

And giving someone some title after they have retired from being a PM or whatnot that will guarantee them FREE FROM PROSECUTION will NOT help. I dare the Parliamentarians to change this law. If not, then they are NOT sincere in combating corruption. If you are clean, what is there to fear when someone else takes over the reign & starts a witch hunt?

I know what u r going to say – fear of fabricated “evidence”. But that’s another posting we would like to hear what abang Pete has to say.

And the worst part about corruption is these corrupted buggers take their illegally earned money elsewhere to spend fearing detection, so the leakage is heavy from the economy rather than pumping it back to create the multiplier effect..

    Stephen Tang,

Hem….Put it this way. To talk so long also no point because we will have something to fabricate bad to tell about each other. Just like ayam and itik, will never come to a consentious.

What is good about PR? Next post from you i want to read good achievement that PR has made so far.We understand that Anuar Ibrahim desperately want to be the PM. PR want to control the country economy, same as everybody they want good income, have a lot of money, able to go abroad for holidays and to compare Malaysia to the outside world and have a happy living. I bet you, as you do,you would like to make it home soon when you pay for your food and accomodation in the first world where the price list for everything is also the highest.
Don’t try to bullshit about this and that gomen is corruption free, first world people mentality, Hong Kong Airport never lost people baggage and bla, bla, bla…What about brothel house is that much easier to find in Hong Kong?

Where in the World that the country is so perfect? PR rule in Selangor is so perfect that ever since PR take over, there are sudden surge in investment from foreigners since everyone in Selangor are coruption free, from the street sweepers and right goes up to Anwar Ibrahim.

I can’t imagine PR who champion the street demonstrators and never respect for other road users, still want to talk about justice and perfect gomen?

Now DB is quiet and want to listen to you, because to them all you said is correct. That easy to influence right? They will remain where they are anyway, and what is that they want?
Change gomen as PAS,PKR,DAP say so, then what?
You have reason to support Anuar as to multiply your wealth. This DB just want to serve another master just like change fashion to new one. Meaning they don’t gain but keep on spending and wasting.

compare malaysia to developed countries. which is a better country? compare PKR,PAS,DAP to BN who is worse?

i am ordinary citizen but i never proclaim myself to be a perfect being. i am good at something but poor at others. i am an ordinary christian that does something sinful sometimes. i do tell lies sometimes. the difference between me to the other criminal, for example a criminal like hitler, he committed a horrible crime, while i does something considered to be absolutely normal.

nobody is perfect that is for sure. the fact is, some people are better than others. BN got a lot of case like altantuya,PKFZ scandal corruption cronyism etc. while they are still in power, on the other hand DAP,PKR,PAS who are not yet in power got less cases. isnt that a clear difference? why should we stick to the bigger gangster like BN? at least the others are more willing to fix what is wrong.

even mahathir said BN sudah terlalu buruk. so, moral of the story:kalau dah terlalu buruk kita tukar dengan yang lebih baik.

now dont try to bullshit us with your logic. nobody is equally evil to the same degree. if you want to talk shit to others, oh yes please be my guest!

Stephen Tang i salute you my friend!! please continue what you are doing.

    Dayaklama and (his)friends,

I advise you all to read the numerous comments by Stephen Tang. You can check the facts. Dont deny them outright. You are welcome to counter them, but do so with, similarly, facts and figures. Refrain from ‘arguing for the sake of arguing’. Sometimes your arguments sound childish and silly. They are just a waste of our time.

Be open-minded,liberal-thinking. Dont be fanatically-blind to truth. Be receptive and willing to learn to see politics from all viewpoints.

Be wise. You can be loyal and obedient to your BN masters, but not to the point of being stupid.

Once you are enlightened, you are most welcome to switch side. But if you stubbornly choose to remain defiant against all the comments by DBaru and its supporters(just for the heck of it!),then what can we do…!!

We want you to stop being the “PIED PIPER” who mislead your fellow Dayaks into supporting those who actually are their oppressors.

    DB readers,

No, don’t throw stones at me yet. Something happens to me this morning, somehow. Hard to believe, but I do feel sorry for Dayaklama.

He is at a loss for words. Well, on being presented with list of BN corrupt practise, amounting to zillions, his only response – effectively is:-
“oh well, PR won’t be any better than BN ”
“DB is only serving a different master”
“everyone is the same, pursuing $$$ any which way”
    ” etc etc”

    So here’s where I’ll get burn…ouch

    Dayaklama,

If I were you, I would ask Steven Tang, the following:-

    1. If all 500 billion were not spent in BN “corrupt” practise, hypothetically – would PR care to use it to improve the living standard of poor Dayak ?

    2. If the companies were not bailed out, won’t the shareholders lost money big time, people will lose jobs and the government lose tax revenue ?

    3. This is a tough one – what is it about PR political philosophy, structure etc, that will make it not repeating BN misdeeds ? After all human beings are full of frailties and would likely commit sins, given half the chance, no ?

I always remember to uphold 3 things:-
    1) I champion Dayak cause, political party is my screw driver and spanner to get the job done
    2) Rational argument is always better, not to alienate people by snapping at them, but to find the truth – and narrow the difference. Only then you can be a fisher of man, no ?
    3) As CharcoalArt would have said it, no reason to be political extremist – have fun in the engagement, even with people from the far end. This is only blogging, for goodness sake – no winners or losers (just bruised ego sometimes !)

Now, I’ll take all the stones coming my way – from all sides ! Have a good day, y’ all !

    KM,

Talking about statistic, facts and figures….not only that but a living testimony from former DB in the person of Agnes Chendu Daud. PKR Lubok Antu Women Chief today announced her decision to quit PKR and now switched her allegiance to BN.

Her decision to quit PKR is because of the many unfulfilled promises by the opposition. SHe also claimed that her struggle in PKR all this while has been in vain coz in there “abok pun tak ada”

So DB open your eyes and ears and follow the footstep of Agnes Chendu before you live to regret. One Indian gone, pocketed by BN, hoping to see more DB switching allegiance.

  37. ex-PBDS on September 30th, 2009 9:56 am

Well done Stephen Tang… As I always believe that the truth will prevail. To our fellow DL, TR, Akih Empangop and Ugahchua, I hope that u can accept the fact.. of course the truth is a bitter things to swallow.

Please do a brief study at those point presented by Stephen.. It is not to late to change field anyway.
Dalam mayuh komen aku ke ngelama tu unggal, nadai kala aku ngutuk sapa-sapa tang semina madah utai ke bendar lalu madah ke kebuah besai aku masih terus ‘ngelaban’ pehintah kitai Swk. I am extremely against BN at the federal level since sometimes many things that they do not know happened in Swk. Federal gomen kept given money to state each year but truly it will not go fully to the targeted group. That’s our main concern in DB..

If you look at yourself, of course u do have almost everything that u desire to have.. but at large, many of our fellow Dayaks/Iban ke bendar, still lagged behind in terms of economic and socially…

If you talk about land development policy unggal, you always say that the policy is good and many Iban will benefited from it. Is that true? Salcra has proven it wrong. Many of scheme participants in Saratok area are not happy with what they get from the company. Enti nangkal getah unggal maioh agi bulih ari untung sawit ko sida.. Amat ga nya laban getah ga benong berega tinggi diatu…
If let say Salcra is really taking care of scheme participants, then dividen and bonuses should be increase, monthly income has to above RM585 per month as the poverty level is below it and stop doing donation to other NGO using Salcra money since scheme participants must ‘didahulukan’. Try to emulate FELDA in semenanjung. After 3 decades, Felda can produces Melayu kelas menengah and many of them also became jutawan baru. Scheme participants also got banglo houses plus a luxury imported car.

I believe that the people here also wanted to be like that. Has a peaceful and good life. So, I raise my question again, can Salcra produce something like Felda did after 3 decades of time? Only time will tell… Cheers..

QUOTE EXCERPTS: What loss is to the country?

The argument was made that with Proton, we would have the necessary technical expertise to undertake many great things, like send a man to the moon. The fact remains we had to pay the Russians RM 10 million to send our man into space. We have to fork out RM 300 million a year to launch the Formula 1 1Malaysia programme, and at the same time rely on our ex-colonial masters to run the technical show.

So what actually we have gained?

I can tell you how much we lost.
Imagine that if there was not this Mahanomics brain child, car prices was 25% lower. It is the most conservative estimate. Just for your info, on current prices, without this Mahanomics invention g for the price a Satria Neo, you could own a Honda Civic.

Take a look at the table below. It is the summary of Car loans outstanding on the bank books for the last 3 years.

Every year we pay RM 30 billion on our cars, of which RM 27 billion is to amortize the principal, and RM 3 billion is interest. At the same time, banks originate about RM 32 billion a year in new car loans. The total loan book for cars stands at around RM 111 billion as of July 2009, or 15% of the total loans outstanding in our banking system.

Now RM 32 billion a year is the price for all the new cars bought in that year, but what is its actual value? We know that the price is abnormally high due to Mahanomics, but assuming there was no Mahanomics, we could surely bring down the price by 25%. That means instead of having to spend RM 32 billion a year on new cars and RM 31 billion to pay off the cars we already “own”, we would instead only need to spend RM 23 billion respectively.

Thats a huge savings. It actually translates to RM 21 billion for the last 2 1/2 years. This RM 21 billion would have remained in households, could be used to purchase local goods and services, support jobs and increase quality of life.

I have even ignored the multiplier effect in the economy!

Surprisingly some young bright economists seem to think highly of this man. Maybe we should ask him to write a paper on Mahanomics for his dissertation!

So perhaps, if it was not for Mahanomics, people will find it easier to survive. Maybe, is it fair to say, the original money politic instrument was the A/P itself?

09/09/09: A historical day with the formation of first Malay DAP branch in Selangor

September 11th, 2009 by Teresa Press

(The title of this blog post has been updated with the additional words “in Selangor”. Thanks to Jason Loh’s comments for this correction.)

    We support DAP1

09/09/09 was a momentous day with the formation of our latest DAP branch in Kg Lembah Kinrara, which is DAP’s first Malay-led and Malay-majority branch in Selangor with 50 members registered and counting.
    DSC04696 small

To mark the occasion, the leader of the branch symbolically handed over the stack of 50 completed DAP membership forms to me.

Speech by Chairman of DAP Cawangan Lembah Kinrara

Introducing the leader of DAP Cawangan Kampung Lembah Kinrara, Haron Abdul Wahab.

    Speech by member Saiful Alimin

Representing the new members, Saiful Alimin Mohd Mokhtar spoke and said, “The founding of this branch is a bright start… The act of joining DAP is not an easy decision for Malays because DAP is regarded as a socialist party and Malay people perceive that socialism means communism. But in fact, socialism is the closest political system to Islam. It is a system that doesn’t allow injustice. Where all change is for goodness, not for corruption.”

    councilor

Saudara Azli Idris, councillor from Majlis Daerah Kuala Selangor spoke and said, “I’m the only DAP councilor in Kuala Selangor. I am grateful to DAP Selangor for allowing Malays to be members of DAP because they are not anti-Malay, not anti-Islam but for justice. When I attend meetings and events in Kuala Selangor, I wear the songkok and I get asked if I’m the councillor from PAS or PKR, but I proudly tell them I’m from DAP… I hope that more Malay will step forward to support DAP especially Pakatan Rakyat so that in the next election, we can wrest the government from Barisan Nasional.”

    Tony Pua

Tony Pua MP for PJ Utara and DAP National Publicity Secretary said, “Don’t ever think that Malays who join DAP will be marginalised. Malays who join will get even particular emphasis because our Malay members number less than 10% and we want to increase it. If we have Malay members who are of caliber, we want to give them high posts so that they can be the leaders of our party.”

“We all know Tunku Aziz, a towering Malaysian. He was Director of Commonwealth Secretariat and President of Transparency International,” he added.

“As soon as he joined as a member, he was appointed National Vice Chairman. If we have Malay DAP leaders who are strong, dedicated, capable, we would elect him to be Secretary-General. We would want him to be our leader. That’s our party philosophy…. I hope this branch will become a model branch for all Malaysia.”

    Time for buka puasa

To celebrate this happy occasion, we had a buka puasa with the local community of Kampung Lembah Kinrara, organised by my DUN Kinrara office.

Line dancing group from the padang next door joined in the festivities.

Fit Moi line dancing group who were having their regular dancing and exercise at the Jalan Belatok padang next door dropped by to say Hello, so I invited them to join in our festivities. It’s great to see such happy, healthy community-building activities like this around the neighbourhood.

Congratulations to the formation of this branch. I do subscribe to the Malaysian Malaysia concept and I have for the past number of years practised together with a number of friends refusing to write anything on the “Bangsa” column on all Government forms. At the same time we indicate that we have no objections if the authorities were to write them. The point is I am uncomfortable to read such things as “all Malays branch” however I am at a loss to offer you a better suggestion. For all intents & purposes a Malaysian Malaysia Concept oI ought not to have things broken down to such things.I will come up with some suggestions later as how I could address the issue.

Dayaklama’s arguments however still not convincing enough to tell 40,000 Dayaks in Singapore and Johor to come back to Sarawak, wouldn’t they?

The reason why 40,000 Dayaks choose to leave Sarawak and work, live in Singapore Johor one of it because the Dayak pricks like Dayaklama that choose to serve Yang Dikasihi rather than fight it off for sake of the Dayaks’ rights and future. Sarawak endowed with rich resources but somehow 0.0001 percent of total Sarawak population control almost 99.9 percent Sarawak economy. One man rule against 1 million Dayaks. WTF is that?

Or perhaps Dayaklama himself can argue, explain (from his BN viewpoint lah): —> Why 40,000 Dayaks choose to leave Sarawak but work, live in Singapore *Johor?

Come on Dayaklama…surely you got some tricks left…!

*Johor ‘owned’ by Singapore btw, so Johor is Singapore’s mainland.

we always have other choice like DAP. if we switch to BN what do we get? empty promises. the same thing. but as just like any other BN people, i think you ugahchua only highlight the bad side of anyone who oppose BN. thus if i see any of your attempt to ‘menghasut’ DB readers in the future, i consider it to be a redundant call.

A lesson DB must learn. What can your opposition YB do for you?

The difficulties faced by elected representatives from the opposition parties in getting adequate grants for their constituencies should serve as an eye-opener and a lesson for the constituents.

Tarat State Assemblyman Roland Sagah Wee Inn pointed out that the numerous complaints by Member of Parliament for Bandar Kuching Chong Chieng Jen about getting inadequate funds for his constituency should by now being realised by the people how futile it was to vote for the opposition.

Speaking at an appreciation dinner for the contributions of past leaders from the State Barisan Nasional (BN) component parties in his constituency last Saturday, Sagah warned that the same situation would happen to other constituencies that were represented by the opposition.

“My advice to the people in Tarat constituency is not to let your support for BN to wane. I can tell you that only through BN that you will see more development coming your way.
“We should not take things for granted. We must remember that the good roads and other infrastructure facilities we enjoy today did not come without being planned and implemented by the BN government,” he said.
He cited that the ability of the State BN to deliver almost all the parliamentary seats in Sarawak had been duly acknowledged by the federal leaders.

“As we can see, Sarawak has been receiving more funds from the Federal government. In the first and second stimulus packages, we were accor-ded bigger sums to implement development projects in the state,” he disclosed.

He added that more deve-lopments were being planned but they could only be implemented if the people continue to give their strong and undivided support to the government.
Sagah, who is Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Supreme Council Member, said it was, therefore, important for members of the State BN component parties to strengthen their relationship and cooperation.

“We need each other in order to remain strong and continue to win future elections not just theTarat seat, but also other state and parliamentary seats in Sarawak,” he said.
For the Tarat state seat, which he has been the representative for three terms since 1996, Sagah said he would not have been able to deliver the seat to BN if not for the strong support from members of the State BN component parties.

I am a malay and a muslim. Feel sad that in this muslim majority country, the main concern of almost everybody is about race, whereas Islam never encouraged any practices based on race. It has always emphasise on justice and fairness. My main wish is that our kids should go to the same school again. No more chinese school, malay school, indian school, or english school. Only one school, but you can study your mother-tongue language as additional subject. Let us be one Malaysia again. I love Malaysia, I love my friends and neighbours. It does does not matter whether he is a chinese, indian, or any other race. I want to leave in peace

    Hi Dyaks,

The reason why 40,000 Dayaks choose to leave Sarawak and work, live in Singapore Johor one of it because the Dayak pricks like Dayaklama that choose to serve Yang Dikasihi rather than fight it off for sake of the Dayaks’

    ———————————————-

What’s the fuss? We are happy here, if u r not happy there then come over and join us.I can give you 1002 reasons why we choose to work here. Please stopped speaking on our behave, we r not complaining! You only worry our family & friends back home.

‘ADOPT MAJORITY RULES PRINCIPLES’ What a silly joke !!!
The Dayaks form the majority in Sarawak BUT why don’t they RULE,based on that very same principle ha ha ha ?????
    Childish joke.!!!

    Stephen Tang,

“If Barisan Rakyat take power we need an IGP from Overseas like England to clean the Corruption and cover up Mess.” and

    Stephen Tang,

“Formula 1 1Malaysia programme, and at the same time rely on our ex-colonial masters to run the technical show.”

    Stephen Tang,

Are they being said for the sake of saying?
Are they being commented for the sake of commenting?
Are they being remarked just for remarking?
Are they being challenged for the sake of challenging?
Are there efforts to remedy them?
Are there efforts to address them?

    ————————————————-

    Well Stephen Tang,

Where are we now? You can carry on your twaddle, and let this bunch of DB believe you. Anyway most of these DB are non registered voters. You can make the election merrier just like in Batang Ai by bringing more PR from Malaya to waive the PKR flags, but it will not make your candidate win.

Now can PR stop from instigating the rakyat, so that we not necessarily bringing the IGP from Britain or you could carry on and our Musa Hassan is ever willing to stop it.

  55. Iban Johor on September 30th, 2009 5:56 pm

    Dyaks,

Dayaklama’s arguments however still not convincing enough to tell 40,000 Dayaks in Singapore and Johor to come back to Sarawak, wouldn’t they?

One doesn’t have to be an economist to explain why, an economic student suffice!Y you insist on us coming back to Sarawak?

We are quite confortable working in Singapore or Johor. Dyaks, Your perception that we are here coz Sarawak BN is not good with us is inaccurate and misleading. We may be far away but election time we still come and support the ruling coalition. So Dyaks, stop politising our presence in Johor or Singapore and please don’t teach a duck how to swim.

    Now Mr.Dyaks and Stephen Tang,

Did you hear that this so called 40,000 Dayaks, are willing to come home and pay their own air ticket just to ensure BN stay in power should there are elections anytime soon.
Meaning BN will remain strong forever.

What more facts that DB is still urging dayaklama to proof?
Even Hindraf leader who go to exile is very eager to make it back home. Meaning there are no countries that is much better than Malaysia.

Hemm… are sure Kit Siang agreed with you to abolish Chinese school? What Siqiu would say about this Mr. Stephen Tang? You can play it around but you will never able to deceive Dayaklama.

Your Sayang Malaysia, you can be a malay infront of malays, you can be Iban infront of Iban. Dayaklama knows that longtime ago we are infact carry the same bloodline after the big flood.

Yes, that’s what our PM Najib is championing now. We are all happy all this while, but just because someone who are desperately want to be the PM, things are in a bit chaos, but still under control.
So PR should do more to serve the Rakyat in their control states. Don’t make these state in twilight condition, and what is that change we are talking about if it goes for the worst.

    Stephen tang,

What do you know about Dato Hassan sui. He is not superman who can save all the penan people but currently he is employing many relatives for his management staff in plantation and his oil mill. He is no doubt is an ordinary man who grab what ever opportunity that’s comes to him. All dayak should do this and take whatever advantage from any policies/opportunities created by the government.

I don’t know much about him neither did he know me. I’m an Iban and at one time I did have the opportunity to talk to him about his business. He have been involved in many other business before mainly construction where profit is about 20% but now he said he is involved in oil palm plantation business where profit is about 60%. We should be proud of this kind of people. His achievement should be our inspiration to work harder and involve in business in order to be more progressive.

I’m pretty sure that Dato Hassan sui did help the penan community , however as a human being he might not able to solve everything. you must remember he is not God.

Stephen tang, I don’t know who you are but you actually make a lot of complains but doing nothing. What have you done to help the penan? nothing .

Your mentality is a typical old Dayak mentality Called “kepapas” .We should be happy and proud that he is one of the better person among us Dayak. He is a dayak that take whatever opportunity that he can. Those days iban in kapit was so angry with Dato Amar linggi because he was invovle in the logging activities and this probably make him among the riches Iban.He might able to solve all the Dayak problems but I’m sure he did make contribution to help dayak at least his close relatives. He too the only Iban who have the opportunity and follow the malays, the chinese who took advantage and grab whatever opportunity that comes to them.If he did not grab this kind of opportunity all the cakes will be only taken up by the chinese and the Malay or melanau. We should be proud of this people. They might not be able to help all the Dayak in Sarawak but as time past by more and more this kind of breed from the Dayak communities will emerge and only after that we Dayak can closed the gap with other races.

  62. Cikgu Iban on September 30th, 2009 10:45 pm

    IJ,

1.”One doesn’t have to be an economist to explain why, an economic student suffice!”

    …………………………………………..

Is this an explanation by you,IJ, as an Economics student or you as a professional guy with international expertise?. If you are a still a student, then you might not have seen the real things in the real world. You may have the knowledge which is brilliant but knowledge alone will not suffice to ensure success. One needs to have experience as well.

2.”Y you insist on us coming back to Sarawak?.”

    ………………………………………….

    IJ,
Well, You may work where you are at the moment. But what MR Dyaks is trying to argue, I presume, is that there are a number of push and pull factors for someone to stay where they are. You have given us all the pull factors for you to work in Johor or Spore. And may I add in some push factors as well?.

    1) The pasture here is greener
-.Are you telling us that Sarawak is just green only as whatever development always favour the selected few and your international expertise is not fully utilised?.

    2) Our skill are in demand internationally.
_. Can I just say that there is less demand for international workforce in Sarawak?.

    3) To gain experience to prepare us for more competative life.
_ Can I also say that you cannot gain valuable experience in Sarawak in order to be competitive?.

    4) Technology transfer.
    - Can I just say that technology in Sarawak is rather backward compared to the ones in Johor and Spore, making it worthwhile working away from it?.

    5) Fat pay check
    - Are you telling me that you could not get higher pay check in Sarawak?. You know our state is run by our CM. Do you think that the current govt has done enough to provide work commensurate with your expertise?.

    6) Ways to get out of coconut shell.
    - Are you telling me that staying and living in Sarawak is like under a coconut shell?. Well, I am not surprised at this. No wonder white and blue collar workforce is living the state. This group of ppl see that there isn’t much they could do to earn a reasonably good life in Sarawak.

We are quite confortable working in Singapore or Johor.
-. Good for you,IJ. However, I do not believe all 40000 are totally happy living there as I ever heard of Dayaks stranded in Spore due to certain reasons. Their passports had been withheld by the prospective employers. And I also do believe that not all of you there are all professionals and some youngsters working there after completing their SPM. This young is always coming back either during Gawai Dayak or Christmas and not during election as you happily claimed. It is equally misleading for you to claim that all of you will be coming back just to cast your votes. No way!.

” Dyaks, Your perception that we are here coz Sarawak BN is not good with us is inaccurate and misleading”.
    - You have just told us that you wanna get out of COCONUT SHELL, Sarawak is LESS GREEN, fat pat check is NOT possible, technologically backward, less demand for international skills and expertise and so forth. Yet you also claim that swk govt is also good to you is completely misleading. It your words against your own words. Why?.

“We may be far away but election time we still come and support the ruling coalition.”
-. Come on,IJ. Don’t bluff us. You mean when it comes to election day, 40000 of you will be coming back?. WTF is that!.

“So Dyaks, stop politising our presence in Johor or Singapore and please don’t teach a duck how to swim.”
    - Can I just say that your presence in Johor or Spore shall not be politicised but the presence of others remain unknown?.

IF you are a duck who knows how to swim, again it is good for you. But remember we are not ducks. You shall not tell us that everyone knows what to do. Even if you know how to speak a word or two, doesn’t mean that you understand. I know a lot of Dayak Ibans can speak Iban language but they still can not understand it. I don’t think all 40000 of you know how to swim. And I don’t think all of you there are BN supporters! No logic!.

    Cheers…

IJ is talking to represent the 40,000 Dayaks there. Why you still denied it, or you felt daunted about their large numbers who are still strongly supporting BN gomen.

Why you doubt that they still can swim, most are coming from the longhouses which are near the rivers. Those Iban who cannot swim are not pure Iban.

1.”Can i tell you now what DB said here are all lies?”
    ………………………………………….

    Unggal DL,
-You mean all facts and figures mentioned here in this blog are all having no truth at all?. Well, there could be some minor error in calculation but they are not 100% lies either. No way!.

2.”They are all lying because follow the foostep of their Boss Anwar Ibrahim”.
    ………………………………………….

This is only your claim and thought which is not representative of all the people. Not true at all!. What about our thought.

3.”IJ is talking to represent the 40,000 Dayaks there”.

    …………………………………………..

    Come on DL,
You mean this bloke is the leader of all 40000 professional Iban people?. Or is he ,like some people might do, claim to be their representative without proper endorsement or formal appointment. Let’s tone it down slightly. It is more sensible for him to be their only representative and not their leader, be they blue collar workforce or otherwise.

If indeed he is a leader of all 40000 Ibans in Johor and Spore, he would have been bestowed with a title by the State BN and every Iban here in Swk would have who he is.

Therefore, for the time being, I doubt the claim that IJ is the leader of all 40000 BN support working in Johor and Spore.

4.” Why you still denied it, or you felt daunted about their large numbers who are still strongly supporting BN gomen.”

    …………………………………………..

    No way, Unggal.
It is just incomprehensible for all of them to be 100$ BN supporters coming back home to cast their votes during election. Please just don’t keep on bluffing me,KM and the rest. It could well be that they do support the BN but it is only a kind of moral support which is ro be differentiated from voting support.

5.”Why you doubt that they still can swim, most are coming from the longhouses which are near the rivers”.

    ………………………………………….

I could sense that you have the first meaning of SWIMMING which is not what IJ meant when he said so. Well, basically he meant that they need no teaching as they are all professional Iban people who need No guidance. For which I said that this is completely untrue.

6.”Those Iban who cannot swim are not pure Iban”.

    ……………………………………………

    Unggal DL,
BTW, swimming is not the only criteria of an Iban from a longhouse. There are others as well. So,being unable to swim does not negate the race status of an Iban.

    Cheers…

    20-point agreement (Sabah/Sarawak)

The 20-point agreement, or the 20-point memorandum, is an agreement made between the state of Sabah (then North Borneo) with what would be the federal government of Malaysia prior to the formation of Malaysia in September 16, 1963.

A similar agreement was made between the state of Sarawak and the federal government but with certain differences in their 18-point agreement.

    History

The agreement was written for the main purpose of safeguarding the interests, rights, and the autonomy of the people of Sabah/Sarawak upon the formation of the federation of Malaysia. It was originally envisaged that Sabah be one of the four entities in the federation, the others being Malaya, Singapore, and Sarawak. However as times passed, Sabah and Sarawak has ended up being merely one of the 13 states in the federation.

    The position today

There has been numerous calls for the agreement to be reviewed to take into account social, economic, and political changes over time.

    The agreement
    Point 1: Religion

While there was no objection to Islam being the national religion of Malaysia there should be no State religion in North Borneo, and the provisions relating to Islam in the present Constitution of Malaya should not apply to North Borneo
    Point 2: Language

    * a. Malay should be the national language of the Federation
    * b. English should continue to be used for a period of 10 years after Malaysia Day
    * c. English should be an official language of North Borneo for all purposes, State or Federal, without limitation of time.

    Point 3: Constitution

Whilst accepting that the present Constitution of the Federation of Malaya should form the basis of the Constitution of Malaysia, the Constitution of Malaysia should be a completely new document drafted and agreed in the light of a free association of states and should not be a series of amendments to a Constitution drafted and agreed by different states in totally different circumstances. A new Constitution for North Borneo (Sabah) was of course essential.

    Point 4: Head of Federation

The Head of State in North Borneo should not be eligible for election as Head of the Federation

Point 5: Name of Federation “Malaysia” but not “Melayu Raya”

    Point 6: Immigration

Control over immigration into any part of Malaysia from outside should rest with the Central Government but entry into North Borneo should also require the approval of the State Government. The Federal Government should not be able to veto the entry of persons into North Borneo for State Government purposes except on strictly security grounds. North Borneo should have unfettered control over the movements of persons other than those in Federal Government employ from other parts of Malaysia into North Borneo.
    Point 7: Right of Secession

There should be no right to secede from the Federation

    Point 8: Borneanisation

Borneanisation of the public service should proceed as quickly as possible.

    Point 9: British Officers

Every effort should be made to encourage British Officers to remain in the public service until their places can be taken by suitably qualified people from North Borneo

    Point 10: Citizenship

The recommendation in paragraph 148(k) of the Report of the Cobbold Commission should govern the citizenship rights in the Federation of North Borneo subject to the following amendments:

    * a) sub-paragraph (i) should not contain the proviso as to five years residence
    * b) in order to tie up with our law, sub-paragraph (ii)(a) should read “7 out of 10 years” instead of “8 out of 10 years”
    * c) sub-paragraph (iii) should not contain any restriction tied to the citizenship of parents – a person born in North Borneo after Malaysia must be federal citizen.

    Point 11: Tariffs and Finance

North Borneo should retain control of its own finance, development and tariff, and should have the right to work up its own taxation and to raise loans on its own credit.

Point 12: Special position of indigenous races

In principle, the indigenous races of North Borneo should enjoy special rights analogous to those enjoyed by Malays in Malaya, but the present Malays’ formula in this regard is not necessarily applicable in North Borneo

    Point 13: State Government

    * a) the Prime Minister should be elected by unofficial members of Legislative Council
    * b) There should be a proper Ministerial system in North Borneo

    Point 14: Transitional period

This should be seven years and during such period legislative power must be left with the State of North Borneo by the Constitution and not be merely delegated to the State Government by the Federal Government

    Point 15: Education

The existing educational system of North Borneo should be maintained and for this reason it should be under state control

    Point 16: Constitutional safeguards

No amendment modification or withdrawal of any special safeguard granted to North Borneo should be made by the Central Government without the positive concurrence of the Government of the State of North Borneo

The power of amending the Constitution of the State of North Borneo should belong exclusively to the people in the state. (Note: The United Party, The Democratic Party and the Pasok Momogun Party considered that a three-fourth majority would be required in order to effect any amendment to the Federal and State Constitutions whereas the UNKO and USNO considered a two-thirds majority would be sufficient)

Point 17: Representation in Federal Parliament

This should take account not only of the population of North Borneo but also of its seize and potentialities and in any case should not be less than that of Singapore

Point 18: Name of Head of State

    Yang di-Pertua Negara

    Point 19: Name of State

    Sabah

Point 20: Land, Forests, Local Government, etc.

The provisions in the Constitution of the Federation in respect of the powers of the National Land Council should not apply in North Borneo. Likewise, the National Council for Local Government should not apply in North Borneo.

This is already out in Reuters and other int. media. The international community will be as outraged, as all true Malaysian patriots. Carpetbaggers, rich and powerful vs. the puny downtrodden, david vs. goliath and all that – showing live now.

Not only have they destroyed the means of life for our fellow Malaysians, they have the audacity to arrest them for ‘trying’ to hand over a memo to that cut-throat, misnomer of a CM?
The mongrels have also destroyed the barricades put by the Penans. As if it can’t be rebuilt?

The Raja Taihs never even offered them an alternative! Humanity has deserted them – rapine, outright robbery, pure terrorism and predation seems to be true to their form!

To the EU and all interested parties – stop purchasing Malaysian timber culled from Sarawak! This will be more effective than the many who will try the above suggestion of contacting the abusive parties. It is futile, as the they are deaf, blind and unfeeling for the ordinary people. We are not rakyat – we are dispensible easily manipulated toys, bought out every 5 years….

Iban mother’s fight for land rights

    By Keruah Usit

    malaysiakini.com

2009-09-16 | Elam Busang, 47, is a loving mother of three teenagers, but she is responsible for more than her own household. Elam is also the Tuai Rumah, or village chief, of Rumah Elam, a longhouse of 22 families in Ulu Niah, Sarawak.

Elam has spent the last 10 years leading her Iban community in defending their Native Customary Rights (NCR) land.

She has seen her father, Tuai Rumah Busang, and 18 other villagers jailed for fighting for their ancestral land, but she remains defiant.

“This (land) case is certainly not a small one,” Elam told Malaysiakini.

“The NCR area on the company’s map was 249.8 hectares. Our own map in 2000 showed a slightly larger area. The company promised to negotiate the borders of our land at first, but they never put anything in black and white.”

In the early years of their NCR campaign, Elam, her father, and other community organisers faced savage beatings and threats from Police Field Force personnel and from hired thugs. Elam says the thugs were employed by a plantation company, Sarawak Oil Palm (SOP).

According to Elam, SOP moved into the farmlands and forested lands of Rumah Busang, the former name for her longhouse, in 1999.

In those days, the village was named after Tuai Rumah Busang, following the name of the chief. After Busang died of lung disease in June 2008, villagers chose Elam to be the new chief. Following Iban adat or custom, the longhouse is now called Rumah Elam.
    Savage beatings

There were clashes in 1999 and 2000 between Iban villagers from Rumah Busang, and nearby Rumah Bali, with employees of SOP. Elam says the company brought in gangsters from Miri to intimidate the villagers to give up their claims to the land.

The villagers made seven police reports but no action was taken against SOP.

There were reports of villagers being harassed, beaten, and tied to trees, while gangsters threatened to attack them with samurai swords. The violence escalated.

On Sept 1, 1999, Bali and Busang villagers shot and killed four thugs with hunting guns. The remaining gangsters ran.

After the death of the four Chinese thugs, local newspaper reporters, including those from the Chinese press, visited Bali and Busang. The reporters made it clear the villagers’ resistance was a spontaneous response to violence against them, and was not inspired by racist feeling.

Police arrested 19 villagers from the two villages, aged between 16 and 75. Eventually, 18 were discharged without convictions, after spending an average of two years in jail. Six were released after 20 months, Elam recalled.

But one old man remained in jail. Jalen anak Anton, now 84, applied his thumbprint to a confession. Based on this admission, Jalen was convicted of manslaughter.

Jalen did not have a lawyer present during his interrogation. He could not read nor write, and did not understand Malay or English. Furthermore, Jalen was visually disabled, because of cataracts. Yet his appeal against his conviction was not allowed.

After Jalen was freed in 2007, he underwent cataract surgery, and his vision has since been restored. Jalen spent seven years in Lambir Prison, near Miri. The prison officers were not unsympathetic towards him, and treated him kindly.

Frail and deaf, but still cheerful, Jalen is living out his last days, respected by the other villagers. He remains a living testament to the suffering of these Iban communities over the last decade.

The villagers of Rumah Bali and Rumah Busang held two separate ritual celebrations – Gawai Kelingkang Bujang Berani – in honour of Jalen and the other 18 detainees.

Over a thousand Iban villagers from surrounding communities attended the Gawai.

The Gawai rituals were commemorations of bravery. A highlight was a spiritual offering to the spirits, to protect the defenders of the village. The Gawai, and the villagers’ defence of their NCR land, were given worldwide coverage, including by the CNN.
    Defending ancestral land

“If we do not have our land, how can we plant our crops? How can we live?” Elam asked. “We wanted proper discussions with the company, we did not want arguments or violence.

“We suffered a lot those years in 1999 and 2000, when the company tried to move in. We couldn’t rest: we couldn’t eat or sleep in peace.

“But if someone wants to seize other people’s land, how can we allow it?”

Elam explained that other Dayak people from other parts of Sarawak, including Kenyah people, had “brought in news” from their own campaigns against companies trying to take over their NCR land.

Among those activists sharing their experiences with the Bali and Busang communities were Orang Ulu villagers dispossessed by the Bakun Hydroelectric Dam.

Elam stayed the course. Like her father before her, she and other villagers have succeeded in warding off SOP’s intrusions on to their NCR land.

“We had it hard in the past, but now the land is safe for our children, thanks to hard work and sacrifice,” Elam said.

Today, Elam and her fellow villagers remain in control of their own destinies.

Elam says her longhouse villagers have been planting their own oil palm crops, for between 4 and 12 years, with each bilek (household) owning between 1,000 and 6,000 oil palm trees.

The trees produced between two and fifty tonnes a month, fetching several thousand ringgit profit per household each month.

Local longhouses have even pooled their funds to buy a school bus and hire a driver to send their children to school. The villagers formed a cooperative and contribute equally to the scheme.

“We still need an electricity supply,” Elam said. “The electricity company has refused to connect our supply. And we still hear rumours of the company trying to move back in next year. We keep talking to the elected representatives, but we have no written assurance the company will recognise our land.”

Elam hopes the villagers will remember the sacrifices of her father and those who defended their land.

“My father’s history is very important to me,” said Elam. “We hope to publish a book to record the history of their struggle for the land.”

One good example of a mystery is one of that surrounds the defense purchase of the MIG 29N Fulcrum. Why did this jet have such a short service life with the RMAF while the McDonnel FA 18 is still going strong?

Because of the OSA, the man in the street would likely not ever know.

This is all Mahakutty’s fault. Mahakutty screwed up the judiciary so that he could screw the whole country with impunity.

Now Malaysia is a land of criminals. No wonder Malaysia is still like a third world country with all these criminals running the country.

Mahakutty enacted all these decronian laws just to protect his as*hole and all his machinations being exposed to the Rakyats.

Mahakutty is the epitome of corruptions of the highest level in Bolehland.

Mahakutty could not retire peacefully because he fears alll his machinations performed by him during the past 28 year’s of his tight-fist reign would be exposed and the spear head would be pointing towards him.

    justland – September 20, 2009 at 6:19 am

Mahakutty was furious with the lackadaisical rule of Bodolah because Bodolah lost 5 states and all his corrupt machinations would be exposed by the oppositions but he is still benefiting from all these machinations he purchased.

No wonder this Mahakutty wants that sleepy-head and sanctimonious Bodolah and now Semi Value Toll to resign for fear of losing more states and more scandals would surface.

This PKFZ just show that the BN governments have committed crimes of the highest order.

    justland – September 20, 2009 at 6:21 am

They are elected to manage the country efficiently but instead they are big time thieves who swindle the rakyats’ money big time.

If they are in China, they all would be juxtaposed and behea*ed, and the bill for the cost of cleaning the site would be sent to their next of kin.

Jabu refuses to meet Women’s Representatives

    By Rosita Maja

Penan Girl RapeThe Sarawak Deputy Chief Minister and Minsiter in charge of Penan affiars, Alfred Jabu anak Nmpang, has refused to accept a memorandum concerning the plight of Penan girls and women, who had reportedly suffered sexual abuse by logging company workers.

The memorandum was from the national Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Wanita, or Women’s Chief, Hajjah Zuraidah Kamaruddin.

Hajjah Zuraidah Kamaruddin, the Member of Parliament for Ampang, traveled to Kuching to visit Sarawak state leaders and government departments.

She expressed the serious concern by the Keadilan Women’s Wing over the rape and sexual abuse of Penan girls and women in Sarawak, as revealed by the national Ministerial Task Force Report, released almost three weeks ago by the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development.

On September 25, a delegation of Keadilan women’s leaders, led by Zuraidah, went to Wisma Bapa Malaysia to present the memorandum to Jabu, the Chairman of the State Cabinet Committee on Penan Affairs.

The delegation arrived at the entrance to Wisma Bapa Malaysia at half past nine in the morning. The delegates said they were trying to seek justice for Penan women who had been found to have suffered sexual abuse.

However, the delegates were refused entry into the premises by security guards, who closed and locked the gate to the building.

Penan IR Who LiesA security guard said he had instructions from Jabu’s office to pass a letter to the PKR Women’s delegation. Jabu’s letter stated that he would not meet the delegates as he “had prior appointments”. In his letter, Jabu advised the PKR Women’s delegation to turn to the police for enquiries and advice on the rape issue and other crimes.

One of the security guards even shouted “Bawa balai polis saja (just take it to the police station)!” in an apparent attempt to intimidate the group of PKR women.

Zuraidah then contacted Jabu’s office by telephone, asking a member of Jabu’s staff to come down to the main gate to accept the memorandum on Jabu’s behalf. According to Zuraida, an unidentified staff member answered her rudely, saying, “I don’t want to be involved in your squabbles!”

Zuraidah Kamaruddin and her delegation strongly condemned the lack of courtesy and unbecoming behaviour of Jabu’s office.

Later, the delegates visited the office of Sarawak Minister for Social Development and Urbanisation, William Mawan anak Ikom. On this occasion, the Minister’s secretary accepted the memorandum with courtesy, although Mawan did not meet the delegation himself.

The delegation held a brief discussion at the Sarawak Women’s Bureau with the Bureau’s Assistant Director, Herlina Ajaib Jamahari. Herlina said that Women’s Bureau would produce proposals shortly to help the Penan girls and women, and submit them to Jabu’s Ministry.

Zuraidah Kamaruddin handed Herlina a copy of the memorandum and told Herlina that Zuraida will continue to urge the Federal Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development to do more for the Penan survivors of sexual crimes.

Panan issue 26-09-2009 BorneopostThe delegation then delivered a copy of the same memorandum to the Sarawak Education Department. A senior officer in the Department was filling in for the State Director of Education, who was still on leave for Hari Raya.

The senior officer, who requested not to be named, accepted the memorandum on the State Director’s behalf. He said the department had summoned the Headmasters of the schools in the area where the sexual abuse of Penan girls was reported, for a meeting on the issue. He promised that his Department would do its part to examine the problem and look for solutions.

The delegation suggested to the senior officer that the Education Department should arrange for the schools to set up Penan “Parents and Teachers” Liaison Committees. Such committees, the delegates pointed out, would allow the schools to identify and address the challenges faced by the deprived community – for example, to improve transportation arrangements for poor Penan students.

Zuraidah and her delegation pledged to continue to press the Federal and State governments to honour the recommendations set out in PKR Wanita’s memorandum on the plight of the Penan girls and women.

Although the women’s delegates were greeted with harrassment and insults from Jabu’s office, they expressed satisfaction that the memorandum had been delivered to other relevant departments.

The delegates said they were also encouraged by the initial positive reception, by some departments, to PKR’s urgent call to put an end to the sexual abuse suffered by the Penan girls and women in Sarawak.

    What now AIO IR

When allegations of rape and sexual abuse of the Penan young women and
school girls came to light last September 2008, the Sarawak state
government was dismissive with the news reports:

Penan girls claim abuse , Against their will , Violated by loggers , A
    neglected people

Sarawak Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud said the reports were nothing
but “lies” and demanded that the newspapers corrected them. “Check
your information or you will be suspected by the decent people of
Sarawak of trying to sabotage us when we have toiled to develop our
    state,” Taib said.

Deputy Chief Minister Alfred Jabu who is the chairman of the steering
committee on Penan Affairs said that it would be a waste of time to
investigate. He said: “I have not heard of such complaints from the
Penan communal leaders in my many visits to Ulu Baram.”

Sarawak’s Rural Development Minister James Masing described the Penans
    as “good storytellers”.

Now that the Women and Family Affairs Ministry has released its
National Task Force Report confirming the allegations of sexual abuse
of Penan women and young girls, these state leaders have switched to
    the silent mode.

If this has happened in another country, the whole state leadership,
the cabinet would have come out to apologize and offered their
    resignation.

But this is Sarawak. This is Malaysia!

Would Taib, Jabu, James Masing and their BN colleagues offer their
    apologies and resign?

    Not a chance!

But we are putting what they have said on record. Let the people judge
    them at the next election!

    Stephen Tang,

I presumed u r too busy with your “cut and paste” assignment that u overlooked doing the same thing to the following article.I do not mind helping you.

PAKATAN LOSE SIGHT OF THIER ROLE: Pakatan not a viable coalition

Please allow me to first congratulate Kenny Gan for his timely article, Can BN stave off Pakatan?, the contents of which I am fully able to subscribe.

However the possibility of BN losing power by the next general election does bring this nagging matter of the fact that the Pakatan is not a viable coalition. I am not assured comfortably of whether it will be in the future.

For the want of a change, the voters, in the last general election had brought about a strong opposition in the form of Pakatan. But then events subsequent have pointed to the existence of a serious flaw in the working relationships among the allies within the Pakatan.

The worse thing is that the flaw is due to the fundamental difference in the core beliefs and thinking, particularly between DAP and PAS. Pakatan seems to be constantly embroiled in internal disputes and spates that reveal no long term solution.

The quarrels have also given one the feeling that the Pakatan leaders have lost sight of the role of check and balance that it is supposed, or is expected by its supporters, to play.

Putting the above into a scenario where, say the next general election, where the voters continue to vote any party but BN and Pakatan wins control of our Parliament, one cannot be faulted in one’s concern of whether the scenario is going to be much worst than when BN is running the country.

Malaysia will then be in the hands of Pakatan, whose leaders will spend more time to sort out their differences than using the same to tackle problems and opportunities that are facing the country.

So Dayakbaru, change for the sole reason of change may bring about the worst?
