Majau-Poi plantation in Kanowit

Written by Dr. John Brian Anthony

A point to remember

I wrote this article after seeing it in Borneo Post (October 31st 2009) and marked this date when the Executive Chairman of Antero Capital Sdn Bhd says that the first harvest of oil palm from its plantation would be around 2,800 tonnes. In Kanowit especially, investment in plantations are very active and it could be the “role-model” to increase Dayak wealth within a short period of 3 years.

40% profit for LCDA

It is clearly stated that LCDA will get 40% of the profit as the custodian of Dayak shares. If the Dayak in Kanowit who has share with  Boustead Plantation have not received their divident this might be an indication that they can approach LCDA for their share. The LCDA is keeping the Dayak shares in JV in 59 plantations through out Sarawak. Read more

Dayak Votes for the highest bidder

Posted by Modern Iban Prototype No 1

Dayakbaru comment: Let us ponder on this article

This article put the blame on voters. I beg to differ to a large extent but to a point it is the truth. The rural voters has limited access to information. The source of their information – TV, Radio and newspapers are in favor of BN government with very steep one sided-reporting. Thus, the voters are kept away from the whole truth.

Voters experience

It is when the voters experience “negative impact” or “loss” that they started to seek for more clarification. They will not choose the same source of info as before. Usually they look for person who they think can help them understand their experience. More often then not the clarification they received is almost an opposite of their earlier understanding.

Then the confusion and anxiety come in for this rural folk. I have heard many times that the Tuai Rumah remarked “why is it that all the highly educated people seemed to differ from what the government has been saying”. The Wakil Rakyat responsed is standard ” anang ngira nya nuan – semua sida ke ngumbai diri tinggi sekulanya orang ngelaban perintah semua.Bisi kala nulong kita sida nya?”

The Tuai Rumah thought about it and conclude “amat nya”beacuse his longhouse has been given MRP but his problem is his longhouse NCR is being taken from them to be developed by BIG companies.  The government would say “maioh untong ari ladang nya”.

This lead to Dayak voters being put in a difficult situation as their basis of reasoning has been made murky by the YB. I am sure, this has change a lot recently in Kemena. I can attest to that.Money is still important to win election by the way but MIOT SIBAT has proven it need not be so all the time. Read more

Change WE Must – to correct injustices

Written by Dr. John Brian Anthony

Pistol Pete says:

“But to submit the rural people to the kind of injustices that you know the ruling govt can inflict, as you may not want to sacrifice you ideals, is not exactly right either”.

This is BN “scare’ tactic

I would like to bring another perspective to this approach, which actually is a “scare” tactic to get the people to keep voting for BN and to cow those who even have a thought of challenging BN candidate.

It base its reasoning on the “Cause and Effect” principle. That is: if you do not vote BN, you will not get development. This approach will immediately go against the needs of the people, that is for development to come to their area. The effect is, they will vote out of fear of not getting the “development”. RETHINKING OUR “PALAU” CULTURE

Written by gkm2020

Pengawa “Palau” sigi nadai ngemai pemansang tauka pengidup meruan: True or False?

Most of us like to have a nice casual drink hours when we go out with our friends of an evening, and enjoy that merry feeling that comes after a few pints, when everything we say sounds like the most intelligent thing that’s ever been uttered, and everyone is, like, our best friend, ever.

And while there’s nothing wrong with having a couple of pints or a nice glass of beer/wine, there’s little doubt that too much of a good thing is bad for us. I always doubt a drunker would ever remember what he/she say or do they are under influence of alcohol. Read more

Dayak must not tolerate frog politician

Posted by Meramat Tajak

Pistol Pete, Telaga Kumang,

I have to disagree. There are logical flaws in the arguments that you both advance on the above

1) To equate the decision of a political frog to that of a strategically-astute general is a fallacy by false comparison.

A general may issue a tactical retreat but is remain focussed to win the battle. A political frog who jump, presumably so that his constituency will continue to get BN development and gratuity, is forever perpetuating the evil rule by Pavlov’s Experiment.

Further, by virtue – in most cases, of the politician frog himself – enjoying the fruits of his action (say, political survival if you will), he would be in no way making any sacrifice for the greater good of his constituency – as your argument, would imply. (In fact, he himself would become the proverbial Pavlov’s dog, salivating for more development – even when continuous dwindling substitute of real development is shoved in front of his face). If You cannot Fight them, then join them

Written by Dr. John Brian Anthony

Pistol Pete

I promised to clarify my position in relation to the above statement and to emphasize that it is not a sweeping statement.

Limitation

The used of such a statement in my case is used in the context of “political principle”. A person who get into politics with clear principles and objectives would not subscribe to such an approach. Therefor, in history we read many cases whereby strong leaders either succeed or fail in their political struggle basing on their own political believes.

To me to change my political believes is NOT an option for the mere fact that I belong to the minority in opinion. Politics is NOT for personal convenience and therefor we cannot change rule just because others do not subscribe to my objective. Politics is NOT a “populist” game in Sarawak at this point in time and especially for Dayak as our future as a race is in jeopardy. Read more

Where is Sarawak RM$1 billion now?

Written by Dr. John Brian Anthony

Down memory lane

After March 2008 Election, BN won by a whisker. The victory was delivered by Sabah and Sarawak. There were even stories of “frogs” that would have turn the table into PAKATAN RAKYAT” favor.

The Prime Minister then was grateful to Sarawak and an immediate RM$1 billion was given to Sarawak to build its rural infra-structure. Where has that money gone to – as there do not seemed to be any major infra-structure development going on in Sarawak today.

I hope it is not going into someone private pocket or worst still – it is another lie from the Federal Government.

It is so difficult to appreciate what the BN government is doing because it is lacking a lot in transparency. But then with transparency how can corruption thrive. Malaysia standing in the Corruption index has dropped a few rung lower then Tun M time. That to me is really bad. Read more

Dayak trap in Middle-Income Group

Written by Dr. John Brian Anthony

Malaysian Economy

Clearly the Malaysian Budget wanted to make Malaysia into a country where workers would have  high personal income. But is that so?

Our country is gracefully declining in growth – you can see this in the slow growth of individual income of workers in Malaysia.

My Observation

In my observation in my little town of Bintulu those workers who works as “contract workers” in Oil and Gas and general contracts do not seemed to have an increase income. My comparison is their income in early 1990’s has not even grown by 10%. In most cases, the wages actually decreases due to cheaper value of contract. Read more
