This is indeed our own shortcoming – great when it comes to politicking and backbiting, but when issues of mismanagement, embezzlement of billions RM of public funds, none of us are interested or are willing to understand the figures.

Without going into the details, there are obvious shortcomings, but none dare to mention them. The contractor value was at RM9.8 billion and now could escalate into RM21 billion. What accounts for the cost over-run? And when you look at this seriously, the paymaster unfortunately is not the “government.” You and I are the payers. As proof, the undersea cable which was estimated at RM4.5 billion has now escalated to RM12 billion – and to pay for that, the turnkey contractor has proposed a 20-year bond issue.

Just who will pay for the bond?

Yesterday we read how a national bus company “managed” to suffer losses and the danger of it’s bond commitment not met (defaults). The “usual” thing about the losses was purchasing land at 50% above cost and buying expensive busses that did not met the quality standard. But the worse part was: “The bond was issued based on government guarantee.”

And that is the problem with bonds for so-called government projects. If the project fails, the revenue can’t cover the bond payment – perintah will settle the amount. And that has become the norm. When perintah pays, it’s from your pocket and mine – will the raise the toll as in PLUS? Will the raise the tariff to keep up with the bond payment?

Awareness of embezzlement or impropriation of public funds SHOULD be above politics, above religion, above race. We citizens have to be the eyes and the ears. Today we read how a table-top computer was purchased by a quasi government body for RM41,000. How on earth can that happen?

We must also be sad if this Bakun case is turned into a political issue – because it’s not. PKTZ is also not a political issue. These are cases of possible greed and possible dishonesty and must be dealt as such. Who ever is the government of the day, BN or Pakatan, must be willing to confront them because if we fail – we are all partners of a crime against our future generations.

My best regards.
