RETHINKING OUR “PALAU” CULTURE

Written by gkm2020

Pengawa “Palau” sigi nadai ngemai pemansang tauka pengidup meruan: True or False?

Most of us like to have a nice casual drink hours when we go out with our friends of an evening, and enjoy that merry feeling that comes after a few pints, when everything we say sounds like the most intelligent thing that’s ever been uttered, and everyone is, like, our best friend, ever.

And while there’s nothing wrong with having a couple of pints or a nice glass of beer/wine, there’s little doubt that too much of a good thing is bad for us. I always doubt a drunker would ever remember what he/she say or do they are under influence of alcohol.

It aren’t good for both young and old health, it leaves our wallets scarily lighter (wasn’t there a couple of fifty Ringgit notes in there before I went out last night?? For it could have been used for good deeds: future education needs, leverage saving, investment, insurances, nice clothing/snickers which you could wear everyday, etc), and those boozy sessions can result in a whole heap of embarrassment, with photographic evidence we’d just as soon never existed.

So find out what’s okay, what’s not, and protect your health, your hard earned money, your own safety, and don’t leave your loved ones behind unprepared. Just think of that for awhile whenever you think of that “Cap Apek”, “Ms Stella Atois”, “Mr Chivas Regal” and so on….

This is a state of creating awareness that alcoholism is bad for you, you family and most of all your community. I haven’t heard a drunker become the champion of others except for him/herself. What if you were caught in a candid camera or in reality TV show; I’m sure you might feel ashamed of what you done “yesterday”?

I don’t foresee you or anybody would look “beautiful”…. If you think “old drinking culture” brings goodness to you and/or your family or community then drink for your success, glory and achievement!

So tell me the basics… What is alcohol, and how does it affect me?

Alcohol is a depressant drug (yup, a drug), that slows down your body functions, both physically and mentally. Explaining why your reactions aren’t as fast after a few drinks, why your inhibitions are lowered, why your speech becomes slurred, and why you wake up the next morning with no recollection of how you got home. It’s likely to make you feel down (it being a depressant, and all), especially if you felt blue before you started, but can exaggerate an existing mood. So if you felt a bit aggressive or hyper before you got going, this will probably be magnified significantly after downing a few drinks.

What causes the raging hangover you get the very next day?

Your body’s instinctive reaction to alcohol is to try to flush it out of your system, resulting in dehydration. It also irritates the lining of your stomach; causing the nausea and vomiting that are such an awful part of the morning after.

To reduce the effects of a hangover, make sure you’ve eaten enough before you go out (that notion of ‘lining your stomach’ is not a bad one), and during the night, alternate booze with a soft drink (if you’re worried about getting slugged – which you SHOULDN’T be, but that’s another issue – then just don’t tell anyone there’s no Bacardi in your Bacardi and coke), and drink a big glass of water or good “teh si peng” or “teh tarik” or “black coffee” when you get home.

But remember, the only cure for a hangover is time. It takes your body a full hour to remove one standard drink from your system, no matter what you do. The coffee, the full breakfast or the cold shower might perk you up a bit, but you’ll be a caffeinated, well fed, clean and shiny drunk!

And why is it a bad idea to mix alcohol with other drugs?

Well, alcohol, being a depressant, is dangerous when you mix it with another depressant (which a variety of prescription and illegal drugs can be), as it can slow your body’s functioning to a point that can lead to organ failure. Combined with a stimulant, alcohol can lead to increased blood pressure, anxiety, confusion, aggression and paranoia.

The effects of certain over the counter drugs, like cough and cold remedies, painkillers, antihistamines and travel sickness pills, can be enhanced by drinking alcohol, even hours after taking them, so you’ll feel even drowsier, and your concentration and coordination will go down the plughole.

Alcohol can also interact with a wide variety of herbal supplements, so avoid these while drinking, especially Echinacea, chamomile and valerian, which cause serious drowsiness and/or sedation when combined with drink. “Enti ka panjai umor badu ngirup; Enti ka padam seput jampat agi anang nagang diri ngirup…”

So what’s too much alcohol?

First of all, you need to know how much you’re drinking – there can be a world of difference between the size of the glass of wine you’d pour yourself at home and the glass you’d get in the pub. And your gender counts too – unfortunately, basic biology means that girls can’t drink as much as boys (damn biology!).

Remember too that’s it not the volume of liquid you drink, it’s the percentage of alcohol that’s in it. One standard drink is considered to have 10 grams of pure alcohol. Even different brands of the same type of drink – different wines or beers, for instance – will have different percentages of alcohol in them. It’s a fantastic resource for calculating exactly how much alcohol is in your favorite drink.

But basically, experts advise that up to 14x standard drinks per week for a woman and 21x for a man is fairly safe. Unfortunately, you can’t save these all up for one “mad drinking splurge” at the weekend or happy hours.

NOTES: Our bodies just can’t process all that alcohol all at once and you should really only have 1 or 2 drinks in one go, if you’re a girl, and 2 or 3, if you’re a boy. Anything above this is considered unsafe, and is damaging to your health. You should also ensure that you have at least a couple of alcohol-free days during the course of the week. If you drink beyond your standard, you may be a target of a known “predator”? Beware too… “haruan makan haruan”

What are the risks in drinking too much?

  • It might not seem likely, but you can become dependent on alcohol, or alcoholic
  • It can interfere with your sex life, causing erectile difficulties in men
  • It can cause stomach problems, such as ulcers or stomach ulcers
  • It can cause a nice little thing called pancreatitis, that results in severe abdominal pain with nausea and vomiting
  • Excessive alcohol consumption can lead to liver disease
  • An increased risk of certain cancers or other unforeseen diseases
  • Mood changes
  • Alcohol poisoning can lead to coma, brain damage and death

And that’s just the damage to your body. Other risks include:

  • Alcohol’s interference with your functioning increases your vulnerability to fights, unprotected sex and sexual assault, getting robbed, or having an injury or serious accident (like a car crash).
  • You are more likely to suffer relationship difficulties while drinking to excess
  • You risk getting into trouble with the enforcement officers/authorities, and ending up with a criminal record

Remember, you don’t have to be an alcoholic to harm yourself or others – just one binge drinking session is all it takes to put yourself in danger. Favorite Dayak Lama’s words: “nama nuan ka ngemai bebukut pia…”/ “apooo…bajik amat indai blues nya madik….”/ “ehh….anang mayoh jako nuan wai, kitu tua belalai sulu….”/ “babi makai kita…ai bisa irup kita…”

And you should NOT drink in any of the following circumstances:

  • If you are pregnant or think you might be
  • If you are taking certain medications (check with your doctor)
  • If you are driving, operating machinery, playing sports, seminar, official ceremonial or doing anything that requires coordination or unimpaired judgment

So how do you know if your drinking culture is becoming a problem?

You don’t have to be an alcoholic for drink to start causing problems in your life. If any of the following are true, you might want to have a closer look at how much your drinking culture has affect you and why? And maybe take a bit of a break from the booze for a while.

  • You drink to forget about your problems, or conquer your shyness or anxiety
  • You drink over the recommended amount on a regular basis
  • You find it difficult to stop drinking once you start, even if you don’t drink too often
  • You are secretive about drinking
  • You suffer from memory loss or blackouts after drinking
  • You feel guilty about drinking
  • Drinking interferes with your ability to do the things you usually do, or should do, like going to work or interview or examination/test or college and/or even school
  • Drinking starts to disrupt other areas of your life, like your relationships with family or friends, your finances, your health or your behavior and/or financial status

What to do in an emergency… If someone you’re with is very drunk

  • Stay with them, and do not allow them to have any more alcohol
  • Keep them warm
  • Get them home safely and do not just bundle them into a taxi on their own
  • If they pass out, put them into the recovery position (on their side, with the top leg bent, the top arm bent across the chest, with the palm of the hand under the cheek). Never move anyone with a suspected spinal injury
  • Call an ambulance or ask someone else to do it

But how can I have fun without drinking?!

It can be difficult to go booze free, especially as our Dayak Lama Culture often centers in the “ruai of rumahpanjai” and/or around the pub either during the festive holiday or “election fiesta”. Ask your friends to support your decision, and not to give you too much of a hard time if you’re enjoying a soft drink in the pub. If they just won’t quit, tell them to “F-off”.

If pubs aren’t your thing anyway, there are lots of other things you can do. Put your persuasive hat on and ask your friends to try out some of your hobbies, whatever they might be.

But if you do take such drink

  • Don’t forget your dinner! Fill your belly with carbohydrates like rice, noodles and bread. Yummy!
  • Don’t be in a hurry! Remember – your liver can only remove one standard drink from your body an hour.
  • Think water, and drink water! While you drink, and after. Also pace yourself with lots of soft drinks.
  • Avoid drinking games, or competitive drinking! Maybe fun now, but you’ll pay the price later. Try not avoiding rounds too, or limiting them to just one or two friends. If others in a round are drinking faster than you’re comfy with, just slow down, or opt out of the round altogether.
  • Never accept drinks from strangers, no matter how good-looking they are, and remember that the reason they might look so great anyway might be all down to the beer goggles! And you’re hardly drop dead gorgeous yourself when you’re drop down drunk.
  • Don’t leave your drink unattended either… if you leave one on the bar while you go to the loo, ditch it and buy a new one.
  • And remember to plan how you’re going to get home before you start drinking. Keep your taxi numbers in a safe place, along with some cash to pay for your cab.

If you’re a soccer star extraordinaire or just an occasional jogger/hiker, get the low down on how alcohol can affect your performance with our guide,

Having a drink is a big part of Dayak Lama’s culture and social life. So is sport and exercise. For most adults/youths, enjoying alcohol in moderation as part of a healthy lifestyle shouldn’t cause any problems.

Of course many people enjoy a drink when they are socializing as alcohol can help you relax. There are many good health, family and social reasons why you may decide not to drink. If you choose not to drink alcohol either as a lifestyle choice or on any particular occasion, people should support you in this and you shouldn’t feel pressured to drink by your team mates.

One Standard Drink: A glass of stout/lager/cider (284ml) or a small glass of tuak/wine (100ml) or a pub measure of spirit (35.5ml)

Change our Dayak Lama “ngirup” culture first

If we want Change then change this old traditional “ngirup” culture first! There is no such thing as “enti ka ngirup, ngirup mimit-mimit aja tau”…. And I do believe there’s no such thing as “one for the road” too. Societies that believe in promoting “bad drinking culture” are normally the loser and usually faced with backwardness. Alcohol win but you’re looser!

Conclusion

To the Iban and/or bansa Dayak in general, kindly rethink your old “ngirup” heritage culture. Used alternative drink to welcome your honorable guest and/or promoting a toast. We’re already living a change of modernization or a Dayak Baru civilization. I know Iban/Dayaks are known for their bravery as the great “headhunters’ but they’re also great “pemabuk” too! You no warrior if you’re alcoholic.

Lastly, from me: Teach your children to drink alcohol; you train them to become a professional drinker one day. Teach your children to save money; you help them to build their own wealth one day.  To become prosper like others, you have to learn from their success culture and/or stories.

Not just Change the political arena but Change your old alcoholistic culture too. I started yesterday and how about you? Good luck!

    “PALAU”
Very good topic but not so good for drinkers.
I am an alcholic pensioner (30years ago).I knew very well of the pros and cons of alcoholics beverage.
While working in health department I try my best to campaign for anti alcoholics and anti smoking through health talks, posters etc. but not much a sucess more to a waste of government money. I fully agree to all you have written above although alot more problems to be added.
To me a more sucessful way to get rid of “Palau” culture is through religion (religious talk). e.g. The Lun Bawang are more sucessful in their life when they gave away their palau culture after joining SIB church. Other denomination can’t rid this culture because the bible didn’t really forbid alcoholic drinking but forbid drunken. SIB knew well if it allow a bit it will get to more and more to no limit of course drunken will be the result. That is why not many DAYAK/Iban want to join SIB because they don’t want to change their ways and culture.
I hope that other denomination can do the same if they want their followers to change their ways.I think we won’t loss anything for not following our palau culture but we will get the profit out of it. I am not campaigning for SIB but just for example only.

*Few e.g of problems arise from Palau culture>
    1. Middle age man, have money spent on buying beer, other brand alcholics. Wife got sick, crying for no money to send her to hospital. (Begging)
    2. Wife angry because husband always drunk, no money, cut husband thigh with parang inside sarong but sarong broken and parang cut his thigh send to hospital 20 stitches.
    3. Bachelor went back from pub drunken driving motorcycle self accident and died on tne spot.
    4. During wedding ceremony, to much drink Palau, fight errupt, wedding pospond.
All this true incident occuring recently in my area. Can be avoided if Palau culture can be erased.

An ambulance standby that night, me and my friend (medical assistant) pick up the dead body to the SGH. I wait for the news the next day in the local newspaper but cannot find any. Case closed. CM nephew is an alcoholic. Glad this generation died slowly and one by one.

I don’t know what is your religion gKM2020, but in christianity it’s not wrong to drink until drunk. Maybe you don’t agree. If read bible about Jesus turning water into wine in the wedding of Kana and all his disciples are drunk, perhaps he himself also drunk and is this wrong if you are christian?
This is my interpretation and could be wrong as what i said before as i have asked one pastor, he said Jesus just want to show that he can perform miracle and let the non believers believes in him.
I disagree with the pastor expalanation as to me the fact is someone is drunk and thats the things that i see. Isn’t that seeing is believing. This is not mocking God and purely my opinion.

  7. gkm2020 on October 30th, 2009 10:04 pm

    Unggal Dayaklama,

This is my thought too. Not just in the Dayak Lama “Palau” Culture, alcoholism is running rampant today, even in Christian’s homes! Scripture tells us we are not to get drunk on too much wine because it causes sin. But the bible says a believer in Christ is saved through the death of Jesus. Does that mean the alcoholic Christian is saved too?

Understand that living a righteous life in Jesus Christ is what gives the Christian eternal life. Being “saved” is a rebirth process and lifestyle change from walking in darkness to walking in the light. Do you think an alcoholic walks in the light or in the dark? Ok, then, there’s your answer.

Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. (Ephesians 5:18 NIV)

Anyone who drinks to get drunk is not living a righteous life in Jesus Christ. An alcoholic is enslaved and controlled by the drink. Yes, it is true, Christian’s sin, but they do not continue living in that sin, unless they are in fact, not Christian. If we know that drinking too much alcohol leads to sin then we should not do it. Maybe we should never have that first drink so we won’t even have to worry about becoming an alcoholic.

I hear many horror stories from the spouse of an alcoholic, usually the wife, who is at wits end trying to tolerate her abusive husband and still maintain her marriage in some sort of congenial and organized fashion I tell them straight out, stop enabling the alcoholic. But many times not helping them is easier said than done, especially if the addict is emotionally abusing them, which is almost always the case.

An alcoholic will manipulate, abuse, and control everyone in the home if you allow him or her to. If the alcoholic is not in denial anymore and begins to recognize they have a problem, they may tell you over, and over, and over again that they will stop drinking – they may even set a date and time for this big event. But he never stops when he says he will! So stop believing him!

Trusting in what an alcoholic says or does is literally impairing your own mental and emotional thought patterns. The alcoholic makes you weak with them. In many ways, the alcoholic works through others to live – its how they get by for so many years drinking without becoming a skid row bum.

As long as the alcoholic is getting help by you for him to keep slurping down that booze, nothing will ever change in your life and marriage, and I mean nothing!

This does not mean that once you stop enabling the alcoholic they will end up a hopeless, helpless bum. On the contrary, unless they can get someone else to help them to drink themselves to death, they will most likely seek help for themselves.

The simple fact is if a Christian is abusing alcohol than he has fallen from Christ and he should deal with this moral issue accordingly. If they are not Christian, then that is one less reason why they should quit.

For the alcoholic, it is not just about going to rehabilitation or going to Alcoholic’s Anonymous that will help them to stop drinking, it is the willingness to move forward with their life, realizing their potential, and becoming the productive person God intends them to be.

They don’t need alcohol; it’s only a crutch they use to make their life seem more bearable. But that is a lie too. In my opinion the one and only true way to get through the deceptions of the disease is through the workings of God.

Rehab and AA are secondary to surrendering yourself to God. An alcoholic drinks because they need inner healing. Once they get to the root of their emotional wounds, they will be able to stop drinking for good! That’s all there is to it.

Do you expect too much from the alcoholic in your life? Expectations will keep you on an emotional roller coaster ride with the alcoholic. They will bring you down and they will bring you up, and back down again. Whew, are you ready to get off that emotional ride and live your life?

Understand that you cannot make the alcoholic come off the roller coaster with you. No, it does not work like that. First you come off and later when you are ready, you can slowly help them off.

Let the alcoholic know how much you love and care for them, but let them know too, you do not love the disease!!

Therefore you will not help them to kill themselves anymore! Tough love is the way to go when dealing with the devastation of alcoholism in a loved one.

I also quotes some of the bible versus for you on the followings: “Where in the bible and/or in the versus says that Jesus is drunk?”

    - Jesus made wine, John 2:3-11.
    - A curse to not be able to drink it, Isaiah 1:22, 24:11, Micah 6:15.
    - Offerings, Exodus 29:40, Numbers 15:4-10.
    - Medicine, 2Samuel 16:2, Proverbs 31:6, 1Timothy 5:23.
    - Made glad, Psalm 104:15, Ecclesiastes 10:19.
    - A blessing, Genesis 14:18, Proverbs 9:2, 5, Ecclesiastes 9:7, Isaiah 25:6, 55:1, Amos 9:14, Zechariah 10:7, Matthew 26:29, John 2:3-11, 1Corinthians 10:16.
    - Drunkenness forbidden: Esther 1:10-12, Proverbs 20:1, 23:29-35, 31:4-5, Isaiah 5:11, 28:7, Hosea 4:11, Joel 3:3, Amos 6:6, Luke 21:34, Romans 13:13, Ephesians 5:18, 1Timothy 3:8, Titus 1:7.
    - Priests in tabernacle, Leviticus 10:9. Nazarites, Numbers 6:3.
    - Consider weaker brother, Romans 14:1-15:7, 1Corinthians 8:3-13.

Hope you can understand Jesus or Yesus better…Don’t blame our Lord Jesus Christ and/or bring such issue in your much motivated BN political tactics.

It all depend on oneself judgement whether it good or otherwise. There nothing wrong with heavy drinking. After all ones just have to have a good time.

The purpose of live in this world is to be happy. After all my life and your life in this world is so short. Hence it better to have a good time by drinking alchohol beverage everyday and have a merry making day both night and day.

To me those who refuse to see the good side of drinking is because they are so stingy and greedy about monies so they said “anang ngirup wat sayau ke duit or minum itu haram jaga kesihatan” so be it take your monies into your own graveyard.

Jaga pengerai anang ngirup. What is the purpose of life here? You want to live longer in this violence and miserible world. Then it is up to you. Don’t you want to see the good side of the next world which is brighter and better? Then all of you are foolish with an exception of a few, Dayaklama to named one.

If there is no other better topic anymore then DayakBaru should keep silence rather than arguing about “Palau culture” or ngirup arak
because it hurt our feeling as a tradisional Dayak Iban culture as time memorial.

    Hello Blogger DB,

I was driven by the term “seeing is believing” stated by DAYAKLAMA. Though we are regular church goers, but I never witness miracle as stated in the bible, like resurrection, miraculous healing and so forth. Probably I have not really committed my soul & mind yet as my friends do.

I am more inclined to a scientific notion, that is empirical, figures and proof and verification by experiment and off course logic. The question always posed in my mind is “is it there any SUPER BEINGS in this world. Simply because nobody ever get the picture or document in scientific ways.

I am indeed feeling more comfortable with the scientific explanation. The theory of EVOLUTION OF MANKIND VERSUS CREATION as shown in National Geographic magazine is indeed convincing.

In the theory of evolution, the existence of life begun with one celled organism during 100 milions years ago, which later developed into multicelled animal like paramecium and eventually fish. During the last 30 million years ago, the fish with strong fin developed and finally evolved with development of external gills, and then the lung, which indicated the emergence of mammals. Then soon after that the evolution of the frogs (not froggy politicians) and the monkeys (not monkey phantom voters).

Based on DNA studies, the closest descendant of man is the apes. The Java and the Peking man fossils are found respective in Java and southern China. The human species comes from Homo Erectus evolved 20 thousand years ago.

This basically science is all about, seeing is believing. Any views from those DB who believes in CREATION THEORY?

INTERESTING topic but to some very controversial.
I heard over WaiFM a tonic presumably as a “medicine” to be taken daily to boost one’s health and virility.

I’ve heard many stories about those who have been influenced by alchohol and acted in a wrong way resulting in spending their lifetime in prison for the offense.

Some may say it helps to keep their stress away. Or is it the opposite?

But whatever reasons behind it, the effect from drinking it daily I’m sure is not good and a health hazard in the end.

Drinking moderately, ocassionally I’m sure will not hurt you, neither burning a hole in your already burnt pocket.

Some say its good for your flow of blood inside your vein. So many school of thought on this matter.

And again some say its our “culture” which I tend to disagree.

Why would we pick a culture that is killing us slowly but surely?

And do we really need to drink to prove a point?

    Think and ponder, folks.

  17. gkm2020 on October 31st, 2009 9:07 am

    Temawai Lama,

Anang nganu wai, this is my thought and for the sake of positive/productive discussion herein.

Have you ever thought you were pressured to change yourself in ways that were unnecessary, or thought that you had to make inappropriate deals to get along with your peers, unnecessarily.

If so, chances are these hard-to-put-your-finger-on pressures are attempts to get you to abandon your basic confidence or faith-level.

In this sense, faith-level means our current capacity to trust both ourselves and the abstract forces beyond ourselves, which we are connected to through our self-confidence and trusted beliefs.

In other words, we know who we are and where we are connected, and this kind of faith-level will prevail in its own way no matter what.

Thus, we see no reason to tear ourselves down, lower our standards, start bad habits, make self-corrupting deals, or do anything non-kosher to satisfy these so-called pressuring forces.

We know otherwise. Yet, it helps us to know the tell-tale signs of the forces that pressure and tempt our faith-levels. Some of them are listed below along with a way to resist them:

Ubiquitous And All Inclusive: These forces attack everyone’s faith-level in one way or another at one time or another. These forces derive themselves from everywhere and anyone, including our competitors, friends, and associates.

They come both from within ourselves and externally, i.e., from the surroundings outside of ourselves through what we see, hear, and feel. No one is excluded.

Relentless: Such forces work around the clock seven-days a week, year around. They are incorrigible, constantly at work on us and others. They will not quit working on any of us until we have surrendered to becoming impotent lifeless forms who are slaves to their random unpredictable desires.

Subtle And Tempting: These forces operate subtly, hoping to convince us that we only need to do some small thing to earn comfort, reward, power, security, or salvation. Such forces generally cannot speak directly about what they want from us because innately they know it is wrong.

Thus, their hope is that we will gradually figure out on our own what it is we need to do to satisfy them, and then voluntarily do it at our own expense and responsibility.

Indirect: Such forces operate on their targets indirectly, often at a distance or behind their backs in such a way that they cannot defend themselves or hit back. These forces promulgate fear and self-doubt, which in turn destroys our faith-levels.

They play multiple ends against the middle to influence our thinking, and to give us imaginary problems we will try to solve by ourselves. These ploys are meant to lower and destroy our basic positive beliefs. Once that destruction is accomplished, we will be ready to trust these forces on all things.

That is, once we are completely broken down and robbed of everything important to life itself, we will do anything suggested, even to the extreme of committing suicide if told to do so.

Harassing: Such forces are harassing and punishing. For whatever reasons, these forces seem to have the right to mess with anyone; anyway they want to at any time they want to, even when such actions are unethical, unfair, illegal, or morally wrong.

For example, a target of theirs might find him/herself losing out on select assignments, prime duties, positions, privileges, or certain recognitions received under normal conditions. Their targets can also be bashed in other clever ways.

Down-Mouthing: A major sign of such forces is their occasional but constant criticism or down-mouthing of their targeted faith-level, which could be anyone’s. This down-mouthing often includes arrogant and belittling or sarcastic comments combined with overtones of cackling or chortling laughter.

Here is a quote from the book of Matthew 15:10-11. And He called the people to him and said to them, “Hear and understand this: not what goes into the mouth defiles a man, but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man.” Thus, these verbal emissions include all the overtones, undertones, and other attitudinal signs besides the words themselves.

Jumping Extra Hoops: Jumping hoops is a common organizational practice for the necessary double checking of policy, and for making sure everything in question is alright.

However, in the wrong hands, this practice can be overworked to serve other purposes, like, the breaking down of targeted faith-levels.

Falsification: Another major sign of such pressures is a heavy dependence on falsification of some kind. Certain falsifications are employed by these forces to get their so-called targets to look the other way, or to get them onto the same page at much lower, more easily controlled faith-levels.

Purported Vs Actual: Because of the large amount of deceit, denial, and false-pretenses involved with these attacks on faith-levels, the purported reasons for the attacks are much different than the real underlying ones.

For example, the purported reasons could appear helpful, kind, noble, or good. But, actually, the real underlying ones are meant to undermine and destroy faith-levels.

Listed below are a few examples of typical negative or faithless thought processes meant to lower faith-levels.

    1. Everybody does it. It is okay…
    2. That’s how it is. We have no choice…
    3. We have to get along in this world; our hands are tied behind our backs…
    4. In this world, we have to do certain things to adjust, survive, and fix things…
    5. It helps if we are smart enough to catch on, and then act accordingly…
    6. You are old enough to know how things really are in this world…
    7. All you have to do is this one little thing. Then everything will be alright…
    8. We must play our cards right to succeed or to be part of the inner circle…
    9. We must do these kinds of things for systematic business reasons…
    10. Listen to us, guys! We are the ones who decide what truth is or is not…”Anang Ngelaban Perintah…”

How To Resist: All of the above thought processes are pure bunk if they are meant to get us to abandon our faith-levels by doing something unethical or wrong? One way to resist these pressures, imaginary or real, is to maintain regular devotionals or inner depth-times with ourselves.

These self-assessing and self-listening periods allow us to reaffirm our beliefs, and to hear the small voice within ourselves that knows the difference, and is never wrong.

In closing, here is an example of a positive faith-based thought process; the only things I really have to do in this world are 1) nourish myself, 2) bathe, 3) pay taxes, 4) love others 5) live well 6) finish well and 7) die well. We can also omit the two middle items. Now, that becomes a powerful faith-level!

Lastly for me; Faith & Science is an “Unnecessary Battle”

    Regards

    Unggal John Jamban,

I think you’re way out of the original topic here. Unggal gkm2020 was talking about “Rethinking our ‘Palau’ culture” and he even explains the pros and cons of alcoholism awareness for our Dayaks. Isn’t it a good article?

Yet, you’re calling someone else a “moron” and your so called topic is already out of agenda “EVOLUTION VS CREATION”. I see gkm2020 has never mentioned of such subject? Its puzzle me too. Unless this topic is a “moron” article for Dayak then you’re a moron too! Isn’t it?

“DON’T ACT SMART IF YOU ARE MORON”

This phrase, usually accompanied with an offensive tone, a facial expression that screams “disdain” towards the other person, and an emphasis on the word your, immediately sets up a “me vs. you” dynamic instead of the mutual concern/”we’re in this together” feel needed to calm the individual.

The other problem is that this phrase points to the person as the source of what ever is wrong which almost always leads to that person feeling the need to defend his or herself. Instead try using “What’s wrong” or “What’s the matter?”

These phrases communicate empathy and concern and will help the person begin to deal with the problem without provoking them. Just be careful not to get pulled into their frustration with them.

What a “Moron” is right!…. You don’t jump into someone else’s number just because you’re ‘feeling such a looser’….

A logical thinker is someone who uses reason to understand conception formed, got to look down on everyone else is because you think so highly of yourself…. He’s called a moron and stupid and he doesn’t understand why he’s sub par. “Moron” doesn’t motivate others but him/herself.

Let me quote you this words from a book: “Calling someone else a moron, and you try to get on the bus … you actually like this person and don’t want a relationship with a moron … moron with his/her children and it appears that the kids are becoming morons too….”

Obviously some one who knows too much about moron does not wish to be called a blithering idiot.

So much of comments; some are productive but some are way out of topic. Yet, mostly polluted with political agenda. Can we not spare sometimes to share some input on social development together?

This is my story that has gone history. I started drinking because of insecurity:

Alcohol enabled me to relax and to feel comfortable in social situations and in the early years alcohol was a source of great enjoyment.

As the years passed however alcohol started to wreak havoc in my personal relationships and started to effect my health, I would start drinking first thing in the morning and would continue to do so throughout each day.

Then one day I decided to break the cycle of addiction and stopped drinking, after two years of abstinence (without a relapse) I am confident that I will never drink again.

I gave up drinking because I was sick (twice admitted to hospital and I was diagnose of having serious gastric ulcer) of the way it was affecting my life alcohol had made me a drifter, I was unable to commit myself to anything, my relationships failed, I had little direction in life and it took me a while to finally able to accept that I had a problem.

Alcohol messes with your mind and if you are constantly under its influence you cannot see the problem and you remain in a state of denial.

As soon as you can admit that you are an alcoholic you are in a powerful position, because you are ready to do something about it. I’m not a state of denialability here.

It’s scary though, because you are about to give up something you will never be able to do again. If you return to drink because you believe you can handle it, you’ll be back to your old ways in no time.

Once you give up it has to be final, you have to make the decision to change and it may feel like the hardest thing you have ever done, but you can do it!

Before you do anything else pay a visit to your physician and get all the help, advice and medication that they can give you. If you are a chronic alcoholic like I was, it is essential to do this as withdrawal can be fatal.

When you stop drinking take vitamin supplements and keep a healthy diet, also get as active as you can. Meditation can be very helpful and it made giving up a lot easier for me, also joining the gym was a great choice too.

Think about getting through each day without a drink and make yourself some goals to aspire to. Never forget why you gave up drinking in the first place and pin up some reasons to remind yourself why you did where you can see them regularly.

Keep a diary and write about each day you spend without alcohol and the challenges you face, it can be very therapeutic and can make you aware of the triggers which make you want drink.

Maybe start a blog and/or write about your experiences, the thought that you are helping other people will make you feel good too.

If you really want to quit you will be able to, I am a living example of that.

Remember, I won’t force you nor ask you to stop because I don’t own your life. Its only you who know best and I’m just giving my personal piece of advice here. Enti bisi salah jako minta ampun dulu meh. Thank you.

    Unggal John Jambang/ Temawai Lama

This is my thought: Faith is about “Believing Is Seeing”

    FAITH IS BELIEVING WITHOUT SEEING

From all the different communications I have received lately it seems like people are greatly confused about what happens after death and/or evolution. Everyone has a different belief and we are all right and we are all wrong.

To understand spirituality is like trying to encompass the ocean in a cup. You can’t teach a baby algebra and for us to understand and comprehend spirituality is about the same.

We’re like babies in that we don’t know all the answers. Many people cling to beliefs and yet no one knows exactly what it’s like to be on the other side until you are there.

This is where faith comes in; “Faith is Believing without Seeing”. I know that there is life after death and we just have to believe in it and we will eventually be in Spirit and see it firsthand.

It does not matter what your beliefs are or what term you use for God, the Great Spirit, the Lord Almighty, Allah Taala or whatever, they all lead to the Divine.

It is an act of will – a decision, that’s all – that starts a person on the mystic path of being one with the Divine Spirit. After that initiation, it is events of the person’s life, and the “voice in your gut” that are the training, the lessons. Seeing a pattern in the events of your life is seeing your path.

The focus of your path is what you do, not what you believe: God wants you to think or believe in whatever motivates you ahead in your growth. (It’s not the dogma, it’s the doing.) Ignored lessons recur in ever harsher more obvious forms!

Transmuting the self-interest is enlightenment, is a victory for light over darkness to you; and to God it is His cleaner house. As time and events go by, you become less focused on your physical life and are more “out there” in your perspective.

A lot of your work in this dimension and on this planet is done in the nonphysical realms in your sleep. At some point you are trained by the events of your life to accomplish and support events God wills, sometimes by channeling them.

You get to keep some of the talents you develop in the endeavor of supporting or accomplishing the events God wills. Psychic insight is often one of those abilities you keep.

Gradually your will (your willpower) is becoming God’s will as you and God become one; and God’s will is almighty . . . because He has His finger on the triggers of coincidence . . . so you gradually become able to make things happen.

You create events non-physically. This is the great spiritual truth and is The Great Work, the Mystery. Being one with the Divine Spirit and giving up the petty part of your individuality is a net gain.

    Faith – Believing Is Seeing

Most of the time you hear, “Seeing is believing”. But I think that the opposite, “Believing is Seeing”, is really a much more important rule to live by.

I do pride myself in the fact that I do have faith. I do know that I create my own life. I am able to manifest into my life the things that I need and want, even when it seems that there is no way it can possibly happen.

So what happens when you find yourself lacking in belief? How do you rid yourself of the little doubts and fears that tend to creep up into your mind?

    Believing is Seeing

What is faith? It is the confident assurance that something we want is going to happen. It is the certainty that what we hope for is waiting for us, even though we cannot see it up ahead” (Hebrews 11:1 TLB).

Romans 1:17 is a capsule summary of Paul’s message to the Romans; it changed Martin Luther’s life and ours, as well: “For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: `The righteous will live by faith’.”

Lauterbach quotes Luther as saying, “When I learned that the righteousness of God is his mercy, and that he makes us righteous through it, a remedy was offered to me in my affliction” (Luther’s Works, volume 54, Table Talk). “Nothing in my hand I bring, Simply to Thy cross I cling.”

We can give nothing to God but our faith, but what a joy it is to know that He gives us His all. “Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace…” (Romans 5:1).

Even though we cannot see the future, we are assured that it is in God’s capable hands and heart. What a blessing this is! It is here on this ground of hope that we build our justified life; it is here on earth that we frame a foundation of a faith finally worthy of the city that has foundations, whose architect and builder is God (Hebrews 11:10).

We don’t build our life in blind faith, but in complete confidence in God’s integrity. It saves us many heartaches and headaches. Harry Emerson Fosdick said, “It is cynicism and fear that freeze life; it is faith that thaws it out, releases it, sets it free”.

A man who had endured much trouble in his life was asked by a friend, “How is the outlook?” The man answered, “The outlook is dark, but the uplook is wonderful”. Peter Boehler is said to have advised John Wesley, “Live by faith till you have faith”.

The world says, “Seeing is believing.” Christ says, “Believing is seeing”. Hebrews 11:1: “Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.” 2 Corinthians. 4:18: “So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal”.

    Seeing what you may Believe

    Create a crystal-clear vision

It is a very important first step in this process. What exactly do you want? If what you want constantly changes, how is the universe ever going to bring it to you? It’s like constantly changing your order at a restaurant. If you keep changing, your food is never going to come.

    Eliminate the doubts and fears

If you find doubt and fear creeping into your mind, acknowledge that you have a belief in place. This belief is sabotaging your manifesting success. You need to eliminate this belief. The technique that I like to use with my clients is called EFT. It completely dissolves negative emotions and beliefs.

    Let go of the outcome

I know that this step is hard to do. You need to stop thinking of HOW your desire is going to manifest. You don’t know the best way, but the universe does. Allow the universe to do its job.

    Take action on the opportunities

I think that this is the step that most people forget. It is easy to sit on the couch and dream about all of the things that you want. It is easy to make a vision board and meditate. BUT, the universe will be bringing you the way for you to have what you want, and you just need to take action. Step out of your comfort zone and as ones may says, “Just Do It!”

I always have FAITH in God: God is Love. God is Just. God is Good. God is Kind, Amen!

    This song for you: “Faith”

Tang agi maioh ga kitai enda nyukung laban ngumbai nya Dayak Culture.

Bisi sekali maia Gawai Dayak, maioh temuai ari Europa datai ngagai sebuah rumah panjai ka meda pengrami kitai dayak (culture). Enda mukai2 tak carut orang ba ruai laban udah palau lalu berekak, bebukut etc. Nyau bekedebar bala temuai tama ka bilik badu agi pasut. Tentu sida pulai lalu bejai culture kitai ba menoa sida. Agi ka ka sida datai ba penemu kita, kaban.?

I think as a dayak,I personnaly say that we can drink but be in a moderate way..please do not drag this issue emotionally since we as dayaks especially the ibans tend to speak without thinking…see what our brother PE stated there..that is one of the character of “palau people” Let me ask you, are you happy seeing our own people at down town lying at 5 ft motionless after having their palau session with friends after their payday?? Is that considered as progressive dayaks? So, better ask yourself enti enggai beli dipeda bangsa bukai..ngirup bepenapat inat enda tepulai ka diri ka rumah nyau baka penagih dadah tegaring ba kaki lima…Arios!
