Talk About What You Need To Do about Dayak.

Posted by Cina Chantong

I am watching the Dayaks quarreling over nothing. Don’t know if I should cry or sit back and laugh.

Waste Of Time

You quarreled over who is the writer (race, background, history, to a large extent I wonder if you wish to know who is her idol, what car is she driving, who she lives with etc). Waste of time.

You quarreled over who is more credible than who. Taib? Gomen? Your beloved MPs? CA? IbanLama? Dayaklama? Dayakbaru? Waste of time.

You quarreled over who should do what for you. Waste of time.

You don’t talk about what YOU should do for your race. Such a pity, such a shame on the vast Dayak talents.

Talk About Your Own Action

You don’t talk about YOUR own actions to get out of the current predicaments. Such a pity, such a shame on the vast Dayak talents.

Talk About Similarities and Not Differences

You don’t talk about common values that every Dayak could agree on, to be the main focus point for every Dayak to hold on to, so that they can share different views, yet still stay on track with the Dayak values. Such a pity, such a shame on the vast Dayak talents.

Name Calling is Bad Discussion

Interestingly, Dayakbaru can engage in beautiful discussion and suddenly, when there are different view points, the discussion will turn disarray and ugly. Name callings will start. Not enough, personal attacks will ensue. Such a pity, such a shame on the vast Dayak talents.

Conclusion

In summary, Dayak, be it Dayaklama or Dayakbaru, you only want to read what fits you. Anything else that does not fit your ideology or perception, you must shoot it down, must put it down with such use of words that law and behold, sadly to say, I am at lost on how to describe.

It is your choice really

The Dayak of Sarawak will never unite, will never be recognised as a race, because you choose not to come together as one race group. You want to be Iban, Bidayuh, Dayaklama, Daykbaru etc.

Cheers, and please carry on with name callings, and putting down others using personal attacks.

Please carry on to view that you are different from others.

Please carry on with the thinking that ideas mooted by non-Dayaks should be discarded outright.

Please carry on with arguments based on emotions, that ends up as arguments written just for the sake of arguing, instead on arguments based on Dayak values system.

I think this is how we brainstorming. This is how we squeeze water from the peat soil or worst from the wet rock if we are too thirsty. The discussion may sound like quarrelling but it’s the process of brainstorming. We should be honest, not claiming that one never witnessed the Malaysian Sidang Parliment. One ever witnessed how our MPs shouting like little kids trying to squeeze all the ideas from their opponents. Of course the emotional ones may go out of topic and that is not big problem to deal. Just ignore them and take the good ones. Hmmmmm….sesingkong nya meh Unggal Kapal Tenggelam, iya sigi agi ka amat belaya ba Parlimen. Sema jaku, dijuka kitai kerusi roda iya, iya sigi enda ulih angkat agi, telentang chechangak, mata pepelik ngapa ba atas lantai.

Well, at the end of the day, one leader has to make the decision whether agreed by majority or not. We cannot fulfill all the wish of everyone under one umbrella unless we sink and swim with our own race.

  2. Big Picture on November 17th, 2009 10:03 am

I am agree with you Cina Chantong. We all must look at a bigger picture. First start with our own family. How could we be united if our own family are not an example to the community? Our mind set, must know how to be humble and to accept criticism from others, learn from it if there is beneficial if not put it aside. We must by all mean be firm in what we are believe in with hope, principle and integrity. For all dayaks sake, be humble.
Because to manage our family come a greater responsibility to manage to others.

Should Dayak vote against all SUPP candidates in next election? This sounds better for DB.The catch is, who is the person(s) with the calibre to beat SUPP in all their seats? Suppose DB wins all the SUPP seats, there is no guarantee conditions are gonna be better…I hate the fact that my area is under SUPP!

  4. keling ati on November 17th, 2009 11:21 am

    Ugly msian,

Dayaks are just passengers in SUPP which have Dayak representation, but are largely regarded as non-Dayak parties. Once SUPP had a significant Dayak presence and projected itself as a multi-ethnic left-wing party, it has long since become an essentially Chinese party, and a party of business.

Thus Larry Sng is suitable in SUPP but not Johnical Rayong, who is an Iban.

Cina Chantong’ sound not very proper, better call yourself Cina Sarawak or Malaysia Chinese. Anyway I should thankyou for your constructive comment which shows that you really care and I hope can make this blog better and more relevant to read. DJB has constantly warn us but human action is so difficult to distract from what is inside his brand. Any way some of the articles written are quite reasonable and can be taken for information and consideration, may be you miss some of the valuable points. I hope that the Dayaks shouldn’t be disheartened by constructive criticism from others but should take it for self improvement. I really appreciate YD Wan Juanaidi for his critic on our Sarawak MPs for lack of involvement in the parliament but they want him to apologise for his remarks. That is what happen to our system today, cannot be critisised only happy to be praised. Never admit wrong but always think they are right.

What we need to do about the Dayaks is firstly to bring them togather and compromise. It should be brought into action by our present elected YBs/Mps/Ministers. They are the one who should lead. If any of them don’t want to compromise for the betterment of the Dayaks, vote them out in the next general election. Why should such a leader be elected. If Tun Rahman can compromise and make peace with the Paraku, why can’t the Dayak leaders do the same ? Make peace with your own race and others too.

Secondly, Dayaks leaders Temenggong/Pemanca/Penghulu and Tuai Rumahs should be choosen by majority and not by party which not base on their credibility. A yes man leader they will be and finally bring distruction to their community.

Thirdly, sucessful Dayaks bussinessmen should lend hand to fellow Dayaks who want to improve but without the knowledge and finance to get started.

Fourthly, the jobless Dayaks in the longhouse should be taught of how to cultivate their land for a better income rather than just planting padi anually which sometimes produce very little income even not enough to eat. If they have better income at home it would stop them from immigrating to the town to become kuli, gaji less than RM1000/- per month is just making their life more miserable in town.

Fifth, The gov’t, present or future should develope a better infrastructure like tar road, water, electricity, and IT to the Dayaks in the longhouses and not only concerntrate on the urban dwellers which are already developed.

Last but not least, there should be no partision between the various ethnic groups in the dayaks community. Party, religion, culture, and language should not be a stumbling block in bringing us togather.

Yes, I do agree with cinachantong there when he writes to say that dayaks can never be united for the simple reason that we cose to be segregated into sub-groups of Ibans, Bidayuhs etc. Even among the Iban sub-group there’s still this thing about Iban Balau, Iban Saribas, Iban Batang Ai and Iban Sebuyau. Why don’t we just do like what our brothers and sisters in Kalimantan Barat and proudly call ourselves Dayaks? After all, it was Daniel Tajem who first introduced the term Dayak when he formed PBDS. The reason being, he’s from the Sebuyaus and these group of people who speaks an almost alien Iban dialect don’t take too kindly to being called Iban.

Orang dayak seharusnya merubah permikiran mereka sendiri. Sikap malas berusaha mengubah hidup sendiri. Hanya tahu bergantung kepada pemerintah.
Orang dayak MALAS.Malas berubah, malas berusaha, malas berdikari, malas berfikir dll.

Api menyala tetapi lilin semakin lebur kehangusan.Habisnya lilin barulah api terpadam.

    memang betul

iban gaduh iban. ikut kepuashati sendiri. pemikiran kuno yang diperjuangkan.perjuangan peribadi diutamakan.

    Pemikiran orang iban
    kau adalah kau..aku adalah aku

  10. Iban on November 17th, 2009 4:09 pm

    Apakah perjuang dayakbaru or dayaklama?
Kalau dikatakan perjuangan untuk dayak. Nak pecah perut aku ketawa..haha.

Pegi mana otak orang iban. Ikut langkah orang, jadikan contoh. Bukan mencari kesilapan orang lain.

Dayak-dayak sekalian, merataplah setakat kalian mampu.Iban target nak jadi jutawan, hidup mewah, berangan nak jadi taukey tapi MALAS. Tidak mampu berdiri diatas kaki sendiri.

    Merataplah sebelum diratapkan..

    Friends,

How true, how true. The Dayaks are quarreling among themselves over nothing between DL and DB – Talk About What You Need to do about Dayak.

The dayak would do good for themselves, if they remembered some of the good sayings:

    1. Love thy neighbour as thyself.
    2. God helps those who help themselves.
    3. It is more blessed to give than receive.
    4. No man is an island.
    5. Tough times never last, but tough people do.
    6. Time and tide wait for no man.
    7. Time flies.
    8. Actions speak louder than words.
    9. Ask not what your country (or other people) can do for you, ask what you can do for your country (other people).
    10. The test of the pudding is in the eating.

These are simple sayings but relevant to the topic at hand.

So, instead of quarelling among themselves and pointing a finger at others, they should examine themselves, identify their own weaknesses and find ways and means to correct them. They too have to identify their strengths and find ways and means to make their dreams come true.

The first admission is important that the faults lie on oneselves.

I can only wish them the best but they have to find their own ways to move forward, without wasting time, resources and thoughts on the unproductive activities, like quarreling among themselves.

As an equaliser, I cannot be kind to them when they are failing themselves.

God bless the dayaks. God bless everybody.

Hi Dayakbaru! I don`t think we need an outsider (non-dayak) to teach us what we should do to our community.

May be China Chantong should advice the owners of logging and plantation companies, who are mostly Chinese, not to bulldoze dayak NRC land, their crops, burial grounds and gardens.

Bear in mind that dayak are peace loving people, cool and willing partners, but may lose their patience and turn violence if provoked continuously. The incident involving NCR land issue in Ulu Niah whereby the plantation company hired thugs to provoke Iban is a good example and we do not want the recurrence of such incident.

    Dr. John Brian,

I suggest we talk about setting dayakbaru special task force in every 29-dayak majority seats. The main duties of the task force among other things are to register new voters and at the same time telling the rural voters to vote only Pakatan Rakyat. Before the task force teams are despatched to their destinations, I suggest a seminar or course is given to them. Every member of dayakbaru has to contribute anything so that the task force could achieve its objective.

We are talking among us in this blog, but the rural voters do not know what we are talking about.

    Dear friends,

Some countries which are rich can afford to waste a little here and there. Some people who are rich can afford to waste a little here and there. The poorer ones cannot afford to waste. If they do, they cannot survive, let alone advance and become rich and successful. These sound elementary or basics and familiar to all of us . But it is the elementary or basics that counts.

Have you heard the phrase, “Divide and Rule”. I bet we all do.

On one hand, you say someone divide the dayaks, on the other you say it is alright to quarrel. Which is right, which is wrong.

My question is: Can you afford to quarrel and divide yourselves and never stop QUARRELING after that BETWEEN THE TWO OR THREE OR FOUR MAIN CAMPS.

Now, may I ask, who divide who? Is it dayaks themseves or is it someone else? Be honest with yourself. Stop pointing finger everywhere but yourself. Stop asking what the government can do for you, ask what you can do for yourself. Stop lamenting on others, start motivating on yourselves.

As someone have said, that is what JBA wants the dayaks to be. He is absolutely right.

JBA should be a little cruel to be kind. He should tell dayaks, the following:

    A. “I tell you solemnly, People wake up, People unite, People let’s work together, People let’s work smart. People let’ work hard, People let’s learn hard, People let’s train hard. People, be the best you can. People, throw away your clutches. You can stand on your own two feet. You don’t need the subsidies and handouts. Stop being just the receivers. Be givers too.”

    B. “Learn from the New Chinese (not Chinese Malaysians but ‘China Chinese’) a thing or two on how hard they train for Olympics 2008 and their National Parade 2009.”

    C. “Don’t let anyone ever tell you, you cannot dream.”

Yes, you can stop quarreling. Yes, you can start uniting.

God bless the dayaks. God bless everyone.

    Thank you, dear.

  17. Equaliser on November 18th, 2009 9:58 am

    Dear friends,

There you are, someone said, Don’t tell the dayaks what to do, refering to China Chantong’s comments. I wonder whether one understands what that mean?

We should look at Malaysia as Malaysia. We should look at Sarawak as Sarawak. It does not belong to one particular group, it belongs to all.

I believe the non-dayak participation is good. They contribute ideas from another perspective and perhaps give some good suggestions the dayaks have not thought of.

When you are part of the problems, there are things you may not see. If someone point them out, you should thank them. Dayaks’ problems are Malaysians’ (and other Sarawakians’) problems too.

If one group get bogged-down, other groups are also affected. If 50% of the people are productive, the other 50% are not, how could the country national production and growth go up?

It is the wish of our government and all Malaysians that our country will grow fast and be the best in the region if not in the world.

It is also Sarawakians’ dream that Sarawak becomes the best among the three: Sabah, Malaya and Sarawak.

It should be the dayaks’ dream they shall be the best among Sarawakians. Go for it. Work for it.

    God bless everyone.

  18. Deo on November 18th, 2009 10:39 am

Once in a while I heard the term “dayaks’ dream” popping up in this blog. I supposed there must be a reason for that.If its a mere “wet dream” than perhaps Manang Empangau can help to translate it into reality with all his army of “indai blues”.

It may be a good suggestion if DR. John Brian care to list out all “Dayaks dream” as a subject for discussion in the next article.

    Cheers!!!!!!!!!

Finally managed to log on. And the best part is that someone has finally said what many readers of this blog feels. A couple of times when i want to comment but then when i read the previous comments, it basically has decended into a keyboard slug fest.
This is called brainstorming someone mentioned. Compare to our MPs you say. First of all, many of our MPs are not chosen based on their abilities and sometimes their I.Q, so of course they behave like monkeys. Then if this is how Dayaks brainstorm then I worry when we decide to brainstorm in person.
There will be a change in the political landscape soon. The wind is blowing stronger. Its already starting wit SUPP, followed by PRS, then SPDP and even PKR. Yes…even PKR. Those in the know will know what I mean.
And this is the time for the Dayaks to step up and be counted. But still no unity. Unity among the Dayaks and unity in PR. DAP is probably the strongest opposition party now. PKR has MAS dreams but want to achieve it on Air Asia budget. As much as I want to believe in Baru Bian when he says there will be changes drawn from the spirit of volunteerism, I do not think we in Sarawak are to that level yet. Maybe in Subang Jaya can la. Batang Ai was a good example. People not suppose to be there was there to mintak duit in xchange for support. Hire boats and rent rooms also cannot. Election day also no money to ‘help voters’. PKR lost because of not enough money and not due to issues.
Daniel Tajem is a smart man. Why not join PKR earlier on? Cause got so many more candidates with less baggage before him. Later duit pilihan raya sik cukup. Last time he already spend his own money to try win Bukit Begunan and PKR belum bayar balik.
There are many more examples not just in the opposition but for BN as well but we will not talk about that. Sometimes we can see other people’s mistake more than our own.
So get your act clean up and give us a good alternative. BN needs some major personnel overhaul but even so they still have the incumbent advantage.

    Dear friends,

I am happy to see one smart participant a Mr. Sem said that DR. John should get on with the task at hand – that is politics – on setting up the task force in all the dayaks-majority seats.

I must congratulate Mr. Sem, the smart and wise one. I see that he doesn’t want to waste time, resources and energy on unproductive arguments. Once a discussion starts, it must have an end. Actions then must follows. Well done Mr. Sem.

Don’t let someone pour cold water over you. Get on with task at hand and just do it, regardless how little you have.

Barack Obama started with very little but when people started to see he was making progress through perseverance and sheer hard work, they threw in their support and donated their savings and what they have. That’s the way to go, haha, they all say.

It is not money the big thing, it is you. How much are you willing to give yourself to the people. When they see you are giving your all to them, they turn around and follow you, even to hell. That is leadership, Mr. Sem. I pray you have it and what it takes.

God cares for you when you care for others.

    God bless everyone.

  25. Aya Bujang Tuai on November 18th, 2009 5:22 pm

I am happy that my comment has been understood by some already.
Dayaks from the beginning has been split by various political parties, right back from Stephen Kalongs era. Now we see is even worse. Party after party are being formed and now the original splitter want NGO to form another party although MDC was disapproved. If the Dayaks leaders from various parties in the BN and opposition don’t want to unite and compromise, don’t ever dream that the Dayaks will unite. Ba rumah panjai, rauh rauh enda ngasoh bepecah belah tang sida ke mai lalu ngasoh rayat bepecah. PRS & SPDP deh enda ulih begulai kati ko nya deh bakih, ulih begulai kitai nitih ke sida ke tuai ?
If Yangdikasihi don’t want to jump frog from his PBB then he should bring all Dayaks YBs into his party. Dissolve SPDP,PRS,SNAP,STAR,and even the new PKR, bring them to PBB. If this is feasible then Yangdikasihi will be our kepala menteri. Until then we will never have unity just believe me.

Talk about the Orang Utans, they are much better than the dayaks in terms of protection but their homes are getting smaller due to further intrusion by humans. They are fortunate that it is the CM who fights for them to death or more serious than fighting for the dayaks. They are better protected than the dayaks; they are given lands and gazetted just for their homes.

From information given by the forest experts, the CM confided that the Orangutans share 97% DNA with humans. So, that means they think that humans and them share the same grandparents and can easily adaptable to any environment that humans can do. They can go to pubs, drink beers, play around with the Indai Belus etc. They can also live in the OP plantation that they can make their modern kind of home. Yes, many of them are living in steel-made or concrete made homes in towns todays while many of their relatives still stay in the protected jungle like Semenggok and Matang.

So, the orangutans todays are better off coz they have an orangutan adoption programme championed by the CM just to show to the whole world and like a cat cover it ‘tahi’ with ‘abus’ in the kitchen that how caring the State authority towards the animals that they claim cousins of humans. Nope! I won’t regard them as my cousin in term of DNA composition.

    Manang Empangau,

Whether you like it or not, the mayas is very much our distant cousin. But you know in the old day they are very very lazy, only like to climb trees whole day long, while as human are very hard working and very innovative. The pengulu and apai of the mayas are hopeless and always interested in playing around with indai mayas belus whole day long and never care about the well-being of his anakbiak. That’s why they are left behind by human race. Now the mayas are blaming human for being too progressive and hardworking. That’s not fair.

  40. Manang Empangau on November 22nd, 2009 12:58 pm

I would never claimed them my cousins or very far distant cousins. They are simply animals that can influence the top brats of the State over the dayak community. These mayases are encroaching into the land of the humans who are more specialized/civilized. These mayases are simply fighting for more land reserves and not to encourage any more further forest destruction for the benefit of State agricultural development. You see, these mayases are our competitors for the land, in addition to those antu rayas who are going hentam saja whatever come their ways.

  41. Manang Empangau on November 22nd, 2009 3:17 pm

Sharing 97% DNA of a human has made some smart or high-profile humans claim that an orangutan is their cousins, sharing the same grandfather.
