Dayak To Uplift their Political Approach

Written by Dr. John Brian Anthony

Questions asked

Lately, I have been asked by many friends  the question of whether Keadilan or Pakatan Rakyat will really benefits the Dayak. That seemed an ordinary question but the answer is NOT.

Always at the back of my mind lingers this thought – what are the similarities of PR with BN and what are their differences. How will Dayak benefits from these similarities and diffrences?

Then another nagging question pop up. Do we need PR or PKR to help Dayak to progress? Is it not better to have our own Dayak party in Sarawak that is align to PR instead of joing PKR as members?

I think there are too many questions to answer in one breath. Nevertheless I would try to open up all my senses in order to make sense of my response to the questions to all Dayakbaru readers.

Political Structure

The political structure in Malaysia is now well established. The government is BN and that Pakatan Rakyat is the Opposition. at Federal level. At State level, Opposition govern 4 States.

Both organization – BN and PR suffers from the same internal squabbles among its members. Both organization are led by Malay – from UMNO and former UMNO. UMNO talked of Ketuanan Melayu and PKR talked of Ketuanan Rakyat.

Multi – racialism

In PR multi-racialism is embedded in the party membership and in many BN parties it is the same eg Gerakan, SUPP, SPDP etc. Nevertheless, there are many party components that are stictly racial in nature: UMNO, MCA, MIC, PBB etc. The “inclusivity” of BN is through their decision making – by consensus. It is working well is another matter.

It is interesting to note that Pakatan Rakyat has just started on its journey to find durable solutions and decision making process that will work for their own purpose. Hopefully the solution would be found earlier rather than later which is to their disadvantage.

Where does Dayak stand in this equilibrium?

Dayak is already well represented in BN through PBB, SPDP, PRS and SUPP in Sarawak.  In PR Dayak harbour the dream of Dayak involvement through PKR. I do not think that many Dayak will be picked by DAP and much lesser PAS to contest in the next election. So PKR is the main vehicle for Dayak to contest in the next election and hopefully win.

PKR Dayak hope to win as many seats as possible in the next election and combined with DAP/PAS dream to form the Sarawak State government with a Dayak as the Chief Minister. I am not sure whether that is a realistic dream for Dayak in PKR but is nevertheless still an important dream. We must always Dare to Dream.

Money for Election

Dayak for  a start in PR would depend on “money given” to their candidates to contest the election. That is not a comfortable situation to be in as there are too many variables that can affect outcome of the election and not the least is CASH in hand to pay for goods and services during the election. Bn has goodwill to spend too while PR is still accumulating some.

It must be said that “MONEY IS NOT EVERYTHING” but money is needed in everything if the candidate is to win an election. I know as I have been there before.

This mean, Dayak candidates who contested on PR ticket must have their own MONEY and not dependent on the money promised by the party. Hopefully, many of PR candidate can overcome the MONEY problem in the coming election. Potential PKR candidates with no personal money is also in a hopeless position.

Can Dayak improve their political performance?

Many of the Dayakbaru feedback in this blog is very straight forward or forthright in saying that Dayak politicians needs to improve in their performance to improve the Dayak lot first by “SPEAKING UP”. If they do not speak up on their ideas and solution to help the Dayak then the opportunities presented to them is wasted. The Dayak leaders must have guts and will in order to earn their respect from Dayakbaru.

It is also my believed that should the current Dayak YBs speak up and asked that Dayak needs be prioritized many Dayakbaru would give them a chance to lead and succeed. This case is not about Dayakbaru holding the thoughtsthat they are better equip to be YBs but really an urgent and important need for Dayak YBs to relook their role and approach and stand up for the community to be counted as its rightful leaders.

How about a Dayak Opposition party that is align to Opposition PR?

There are already efforts to register MDC – ( now dead and gone) and the continued effort to re-register PBDS in the light of new approach by ROS. There is even a YB Adit’s effort to form a new party which hopefully is still in the process of germination. On top of this all “The Broken Shield” talked about new political parties that is closely aligned to a new Sabah party – a united East Malaysia party of some sort that would align itself to PR with specific conditions as spelled out in the “TAMBUNAN DECLARATION” by Dr. Jeffrey Kitinggan.

Bottom line

The bottom line to me is – can the current Dayak Ybs in BN stand up and be counted to represent the Dayak views and solution. That seem to be the root of the Dayakbaru dissatisfaction – the poor peformance of dayak YBs in BN rather than the BN itself.

Maybe that explain why lousy BN Dayak candidates are voted in despite their poor personal  performance because the Dayak still hope that the BN government would assist them over the shoulder of their helpless representatives. Remember, it is the Chief Minister that choose BN candiddate and he seems to have a purpose for everything.

Conclusion

So Dayak YBs whether you are in BN as at present or potential  incoming as in PR you must consciously make effort to improve your leadership and increase the volume of your voice to be heard and seen by Dayak.

BN and PR maybe similar but the Dayaks leaders must put their act together. Today, the Dayak has voted for BN and it is the BN Dayak leadership that now must be taking the responsibilities of leading, planning, coordinating, implementing and reviewing Dayak progress. The Opposition would be capitalizing on every weakness and gap to take over the role of leadership from BN.

For Dayak in general – we must not shy away from taking calculated risk in business, improve our disposal income through our own enterprise, better the quality of our life through correct discipline and focus on our chldren education to give them a fighting chance to compete well in future.

Therefor it is important to have effective Opposition to help steer BN towards a just and fair goal for all Sarawakian.

Change WE Must.

    Dear friends,

Whether a political party is from Semanangjung or Sarawak, the people must be “Masters of their own Destiny”. Sadly, it is not the case right now.

Once, the people become careless or unconcern of their own affairs and fate, the politicians start to take advantage of them. The people must at all times remain alert and concerned.

Lessons learnt from the past and recent events have taught Sarawakians a great deal and my hope is they become wiser and more alert of what they are going to face and what may come next. We have learnt from:

    a. The changes made in Sarawak Constitution in 1953 by the British, 10 years before the formation of Malaysia. That change put the natives, the chinese, the indians, the eurasians and others at a disadvantage for they were equal since 1920.

    b. The ‘inaccurate’ Cobbold’s Report.

    c. The changes of Federal Constitution and 161a Clause.

    d. The current 5% oil loyalty.

    e. The 20% oil royalty bait by PKR.

    f. The socalled promise to solve the NCR land issues by PKR if elected to power.

The last two, if even given in black and white, are nothing much in a Social Contract. Now PKR only talk about it. See how one can be very ‘clever’ before a marriage and the innocents fall ‘head over heel’ and agree to get married. Once the agreement is signed, everything will be GONE. Bye-bye, you are mine.

So, politicians have a thought on all the people of Sarawak be smart and responsible.

Have your choice but choose well but be wary of the traps and hidden agenda.

    God bless everyone.

The main point is all politicians and aspiring politicians and all Sarawakians must wake up to a new proper, balanced and fair SOCIAL CONTRACT.

This new social contract must be in details and embedded in the Federal Constitution. A 30% share for Sarawak should be the yardstick for everything down the line.

    Dear friends,

What should be a new fair and just Social Contract? Shall we ask PR or any new Party to draft one and show it to you all. the People of Sarawak.

It should be at least 21 Point Agreement for Sarawak and 21 Points Agreement for Sabah.

Would Dato’ Sri Anuar Ibrahim take the challenge to draft the new Social Contract?

Would Mr. Baru Bian take the challenge to draft the new Social Contract?

For that matter, any lawyer, please take the challenge.

For that matter, would Sarawak Advocates Association take on the task in service of Sarawakians!!!

Hope a brave hero would step forward and be counted.

    God bless everyone.

    Tuai Rumah,

First of all, thank for highlight this issue for open discussion.

I think we need more time to study the similarity and differences of PR and BN. Be care full, take time and do not rush to make conclusion, take action or form any Dayak Political party. Its look confusing and need clear/detail clarification.

There are a lot of question that are still in the dark with PR as well BN regarding the Dayak Needs and future.

PR and BN may be different in policy, plan and political approach, but I am sure that they are come from the same race, religion and family tree.

My question is. Can the race, religion and family tree integrity break down the political different or political different break down the race, religion and family tree?

The new Dayak political party conned to PR is seem great, but I doubt on it credibility in term of membership, sponsorship and etc. The party may have huge workers but how about the quality of the supporters. Even not all eligible young Dayak voters are registered as a voter.

It seems that the new Dayak Party with PR is similar with Dayak Party in BN. One day, the new party will unable to stand with the pressure and at the end surrender them self to any ruling gomen for survive.

Endawie, Daniel Tajem, Leo Mogie and JJM have passed thro this experience, become our lesson and I do not think that DB is more credible than these Dayak leaders to form the next Dayak party at the moment.

    Opinion.

Not until to the extend that the Dayak people are matured enough in politic and can make their own decision regard to Dayak need. I still prefer we make a direct support to major national opposition party. It may take a time for the Dayak to accept the party, but in long term it can survive.

If we can get one or two sets or even Senator in opposition gomen is good enough for the beginning to highlight or voice out the Dayak Need affectively, rather we have no voice at all with hundreds of rep within BN.

In strong opposition party we may cannot help the Dayak directly but at least we can help our nation to form “Dual-party System”.

On this situation, I can see that PR is the most eligible party so far to form the Dual-party System.

Secondly, some of the PR policy, such as given Dayak a chance to be CM, 20% oil royalty, NCR Tittle and so on are seem very helpful to Dayak and why don’t we try rather than wasting our time waiting for nothing from BN to solve our mega need.

Once the Dual-party System install in our country, Check and Balance type of gomen will appear and by itself helping the Dayak community, as check and balance gomen will safeguard all races, dislike any single race leave behind from others. In other word, they want justice to everyone in Malaysia.

I do not belief that BN will rule Malaysia forever. Rather I believe that all Malaysian will realize that we need other party to share the value of our democracy. This dream is being started in Malaya with PR and it will spread to East Malaysia anyway. Just be patient.

There is always a blessing in disguise for the local parties to rule the State politics. Outsiders shouldn’t be given opportunity to handle the State though they are represented by locals. Just look at our neighbors, Sabah. They can’t block the antu raya anymore unless there is total commitment.

I may revert with more comments later. For now, I look forward to hearing from others and yourself.

  9. Manang Empangau on November 24th, 2009 2:56 am

Nope! I still insist that the oustsider party should not busy themselves trying to control the state. Let Type to dominate or any locals dominate to through local parties. At least for now, Type has total control. Once AI in control, you will see thathe is going to scrap anything along his way. It’s better to be scraped by the local leader under local party than by any local foreigners. To the locals who are ambitous, bringing foreign parties only benefit yourself but leaving the state in the arms of foreign parties.

  10. merakat anak Piun on November 24th, 2009 9:32 am

Merakat is back after a long break…gone back to my place where the basic of 21st Century is not available. This is what Dayak Johore want Sarawak to be…cannot make comments as Bukit Aman is always where he will refer those who dare to express the dissatisfaction.

Well I agree with JBA. I see that we should have our own platform where we can work at the same level with PR not joining PKR. Once we are in PKR, we need to comply to the constitution of PKR.

We should have learned from our mistake in using the same Malaya Constitution in forming/joining Malaysia.
It will make great difference if we have our own Prime Minister instead of Chief Minister position which is the same level with the tiny state of Perlis.

If the position of Prime Minister is accorded to Sabah and Sarawak, then they will be talking at the same level with Prime Minister of Malaya. Now Chief Minister of Sarawak is reporting to Prime Minister of Malaya and so in turn he will take advantages of his position. So what can we poor Srawakian( Dayak do ) Jabu will tour the line and so with Masing and the rest of Dayak leaders. If we say much…Dayak Johore will use the might of Bukit Aman to throw the Dayak into ISA and in Election time, the Might of Malaya will come to pump all the money/resources to ensure that Taib/Jabu/Masing will remain in power.

However, if we have our own Prime Minister, the might of Malaya should not interfer in our internal affair, be it election time or other matters unless it is something to do with civil wars in Sarawak which I believe will not happen. If it happen, it will caused by the current ruling party with the character like Dayak Johore. They preach politics of fear and oppression.

    DR. & ALL<

Lately, I have been asked by many friends the question of whether Keadilan or Pakatan Rakyat will really benefits the Dayak. That seemed an ordinary question but the answer is NOT.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Dr. JBA, I supposed the many friends of yours who posed the question were either PKR/PR members or sympathizers and those fence sitters. They are expecting frank, genuine and honest reply from you. What was your response then? Needless to say, your friends I believed still (and continue to) doubt PKR or PR ability and sincerity to tackle the Dayaks predicament. As more political events unfold you can expect more questions of that nature. Perhaps your friends will be asking:

    1) What’s the hell is PKR/PR doing if they do not have the money to finance election candidates.

2). If their PKR/PR is of no or little difference from BN what the heck the Dayaks want to “dirty” ourselves by associating with the oppositions.

    3) Is PKR/PR leadership dead serious in wanting to introduce reform into the state?

I hope Dr. JBA when you answer their question, please be mindful to tell the truth, that is:
THERE IS NO GUARANTEE THAT PKR/PR WILL REALY BENEFITS THE DAYAKS. YOU MAY NOT WANT YOUR FRIENDS TO VOTE/SUPPORT BN BUT TELL THEN ALSO NOT TO SUPPORT THE OPPOSITION PARTY BLINDLY. INFORM THE POTENTIALS ELECTION CANDIDATES THAT THEY MUST BE PREPARED TO SEPND THEIR OWN MONEY WHEN GOING TO ELECTORAL BATTLE.

I am inclined to also think that your friends (unlike previously) begin to realize that fighting along side the opposition is a lost cause. Their confidence in the opposition party is seemingly deteriorating (don’t blame them).

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I must say this is indeed a very interesting revelation by Dr. Brian (though very much expected). This is what I described as first class (A1) information. “When your thought is lingering over something” you begin to doubt the implication of certain things. In here I took it to mean that we should exploit to the maximum advantage the similarities between PR and BN. In short, Dr. JBA readily admitted and recognized that some of BN policies on Dayaks community made a lot of sense & therefore deserved support.

The changed of tone on his posting this time suggest (I hope) a change of heart on part of Dr. which is good for he overall interest of the community. Apparently gone were the days when Dr. wanted or insisted that the Dayaks must sink and swim with PKR/PR opposition.

The above is not a question from his friends but rather from Dr. himself.

My honest response: NOPE and a big no…..To put it bluntly, NOT that we don’t need PR or PKR but rather the opposition is simply not in a position to help Dayaks to progress…that is my word.

I would think it make more sense for the Dayaks to form own party in the state and align itself with the state BN. DL are willing and prepare to work hand-in-glove with DB provided DB severe its “unholy” ties with Malaya base opposition.

  14. gerabusengkiong on November 24th, 2009 11:42 am

    I am just thinking aloud.
Why don’t the Dayaks put their weight behind the Dayak based parties already in BN,if it’s not the BN that you are against but the useless Dayak YBs in BN? Or better still, being Bumiputera, why don’t you all throw your support behind PBB, and let the non-Bumiputera go to SUPP? That way Sarawak BN will have only two coponent parties instead of a number of tiny ones, in which, in each one of them, the Dayaks can be found.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

i as a kerani opis tanah have no doubt about the sincereity of BN in helping the dayak. though i may be nothing in the interest of BN but ever since i come to this world 24 years ago i have ONLY seen the Dacing Flag Flying with proud.

Doc, as a reasonable man and a great influential a suggestion by MJC should be given a ponder:

    DR & ALL,

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Therefore it is important to have effective Opposition to help steer BN towards a just and fair goal for all Sarawakian.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

For Democracy to properly flourish the existence of effective opposition is an important prerequisite. The check and balance mechanism must be in placed & allowed to co- exist. For far too long the opposition mentality among the Dayaks led us to no where. So why not now we let the chinese and the malays to spearhead the opposition voice. I mentioned in my previous posting in this thread where in 1987 we badly needed the support of the chinese and malays. It was disappointingly not forthcoming; otherwise the state political landscape could have been different today. Now these leaders are knocking at our door asking for help and support. Why should we?

The message I am trying to convey is: Let the chinese and malays play the opposition role taking over from Dayaks. “Tak akan Dayaks mudah lupa”?

If I had my way I would rather want the Dayaks to sit down and relax under the shed of BN umbrella….. teju ke bala sida pok enggau china ngelaban panas enggau ujan, regup regup ngiga kulat sebelah babas.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I can speak for some YBs but definitely NOT all the YBs . For a start in the case of newly appointed Ass. Minister Mong Dagang I vowed he is no less Dayaks than anyone of you. He was my Uni. mate both here and overseas. Back in the old UITM campus in 1970s Mong tu olih encharik berekah ngelaban laut Malaya. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    DR.& ALL,

I salute you for revealing your honest observation Dr. Its not only a “not a comfortable situation” but disgusting. Where on earth you had to spend your won money to contest an election on party ticket? Let me share my observation with you and perhaps the others.

During the 1999 Parliamentary election PKR (those days Party Keadilan National) a group of 8 of my friends were asked to fly to KL. In there they met V-P Puan Marina Yussof who asked each and everyone to prepare an election budget.

There was this chap (now niang) from Kanowit who had the cheek to tell Datin Sri Azizah during the briefing that he can easily toppled DatukLeo Moggie if the party can come up with MR1.8 million. Diatu agi meh ka ketawa leboh ngenang.

The rest also submitted their election budget with nothing less than RM800, 000.00 each. Everybody confidently waited at first the five start hotel in KL. After two days the group moved to a three star hotel. Their personal budget was fast running out. The fourth day still there was no sign of fund coming from Party HQ as promised. On the fifth day all of the eight so-call- potential candidates had no choice but to cramp themselves in one room in a lodging house somewhere in Bukit Bintang. Some less fortunate also has to skip either their breakfast or launch.

While patience was running out there came the much anticipated news, the party official came to the hotel with the authorization letter. The Party official informed all that they can contest on party ticket but they have to look for their own election fund. If my memory served me right only 4 of the eight managed to find enough election deposit to submit their nomination paper during the 1999 Parliamentary election. All except one lost their election deposit.
A personal friend of mind is still keeping the “Letter of Authorization” signed by Datin Sri Azizah as remembrance, nicely frame and display in his house as though he had contested in the election.

    Moral of the true story:

PKR/PR is not going to spend money in any election in the state. Many inspiring candidates can easily obtain the “Letter of Authorization” but what is the point if one is to fend for his/her own campaign fund. Better contest as an independent.

My friendly advice to Dayaks friends: If the party nominates you to contest on PKR ticket please ensure that the money/election fund is banked into your bank account at least two weeks before nomination. If you are to spend your own money to contest in the election then I say you are a bloody fool.

Dr. JBA is right to point out that those inspire to be elections candidates MUST have own money.Don’t expect anything/finance from the party.

Remember, it is the Chief Minister that choose BN candiddate and he seems to have a purpose for everything.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

In theory no but YES CM practically decide who should contest even among the BN component parties.

It’s all the same I supposed. Even among the opposition candidates I am sure DSAI will have the final say. And no different from Taib, even DSAI have his own purpose/agenda when turning down the majority request in appointing Datuk Jeffery Katinggan to head Sabah PKR.

    Dear Dr. John and friends,

Please stay on course and stay cool. Yes, stay cool and be patient. Don’t fight but talk.

“All dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them.” – Walt Disney.

Dayaks are great admirers of the British, Tuan Orang Putih. In a way, the British were responsible for the formation of Malaysia.

Why not look back at the British and ask why they did not recommend the formation of Malaysia to be like UK – a United Kingdom with three countries, England, Wales and Scotland. Malaysia with Malaya, Sabah and Sarawak. Two main party system -The Liberal and Labour, with some minor parties, if we like.

It is not too late to remodel Malaysia as UK if that is a better system, in the interest of making Malaysia progressing faster. In politics, everything is possible, right?

The dayaks may even also ask the British Government for an apology and for her to consider a compensation for the dayaks for failing to safeguard their interests, in particular their NCR lands.

The British failed to complete their surveys, issuance of land titles and put matters right before they washed their hands and left.

    Food for thought, Dr. John.

    God bless everyone.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Politic may be the art of possible & sometimes miracle does happen. But being realistic I thought the above are just wishful thinking.

Rural Dayaks voters are not ready to abandon the ruling coalition as yet. No disrespect, I figure out that in the best case scenario some of the Dayaks PKR candidates may be able to get their election deposit back. Dayak CM ? will continue to be elusive.

Dayaks were there before, during PBDS early formation. Dayaks leaders like Moggie Tajem were opposition leaders but being there for a while they cannot “tahan” in the wilderness. They cannot stand the miserableness.

You think Dayaks leaders in PKR can “tahan”?. Adit said sorry lah Brother, PKR are not for Dayaks. Met Adit a fortnight ago, saying even if he were to form a new party it got to be BN -friendly.

Dayak politics still at different wavelength to World Globalisation , so what do u expect ?

    MJC,
Kindly get Mr. Mong to carry his parang, just like the young days and storm the office of Awang Tingah office. The idea is to get Awang Tingah to propose amendments to the Land Code pertaining to NCR land registration so that I can register the land handed to me by my father. Then I will sell it off to start a business or else where to get the modal? I support the opposition so no way I can get money from BN bah! That’s what you said in previous postings…

  26. Sempurai on November 25th, 2009 7:58 am

Very simple solution. If dayaks feel that they are not treated fairly by BN government, bullied, marginalized, sidelined and just used as tools, then why Dayaks should support BN? Let we try Pakatan Rakyat to run the government and see whether it can serve better for dayak community?

  27. Patrick Anek Uren on November 25th, 2009 8:15 am

I agree with your comment. Dayaks should have a party and align with PKR and DAP. Its core objectives must be to be a vehicle for the Dayak to voice views, their satisfaction and disatisfaction, their pain problems and pleasure, their needs and wants. Sarawak is the only State in Malaysia where Dayaks are found in good numbers. They live and die here. Their struggle for survival must be conducted here. A party as a home for the Dayaks would do us just fine in this multi-racial State. From there we play outside in the open playground of Malaysia. There we mix with our Malaysian brothers.
Joining PKR directly Dayak issues will be too submerged that they will not be heard. If at all they would only be heard within the confine of this State as well. The National Body of PKR will be too big for Dayak issues to get to be deliberated upon. Even representation in that National COmmittee will be hard to get. Let alone to get the body itself to have a consensus on Dayak matters, understandbly.
I am for a Dayak Party. Let’s apply for one to be registered with ROS. Given that an Indian political party was recently registered in one day after the application was submitted to ROS, a Dayak Party might not anymore be treated like the MDC did, hopefully.

I don’t agree with any simple solution that involves WM-based party as an alternative to the State BN. It’s equated with a bad or desperate move to gain position but at the end of the day we are caught in our own traps that we ourselves cannot unlock. Some must form a local party, not necessary Dayak-based but to represent everyone race in the State. All the leaders in it must be the new-blood, no frogs or ‘hawong’. Let them be like a ‘Bujang runggu Insing’. Agi Idup agi ngelaban, no frogging personality to be allowed into the party.

  29. Equaliser on November 25th, 2009 10:49 am

    Dear friends,

Patrick anak Uren spoke well and spoke right to form a local party for dayaks, not necessary 100% dayaks party, to look into the interests of dayaks and able to voice their satisfaction and dissatisfaction at both state and national level.

The dayaks must give his suggestion a serious thought.

    Good luck.

Most commentors here I see believe in ‘dayak’s racial oriented politic of feudalism in pragmatic approach … which is short sighted … instead we should be nationalistic and politicised to improve our whole nation and it’s rakyat to compete better on global stage … just my thought … it’s like the deers are fighting with the zebras over small envy and differences but forgeting the lions and the cheetahs are their real danger .

  31. batulawi on November 26th, 2009 1:53 am

Whoever is squeezing ROS balls that makes the registration of MDC impossible would also do the same to prevent another Dayak based party from being registered. Write a ‘love letter’ to our beloved Afraid Jaboo, maybe he could turn the tide for us.

This post and the accompanying comments shows that Dayakbaru people are now in a web of confusion. Or have they just received something from Taib Mahmud?

  33. lakkia on November 27th, 2009 11:45 am

Iskander – We Dayaks has been promised and lied to by UMNO Malay. They took advantage of Dayak numbers and Dayak MP seats and give us peanuts in return.

My question is – can we trust PKR Malay leadership eg: AZMIN? Just take a look at what PKR HQ did to Sabah – they do not listen to the majority and install a Muslim Chief when the majority are Kadazan Dusun Murut (KDM).

We have been played out by Malay politicians – through their political scheming. It is fair for us Dayak to insist that PKR pen down their agreement – a pre-condition for Dayak support of PKR?

Dayakbaru raised our doubt and questions – just answer to the question and stop your scheming thoughts. Just help us to progress – and don’t take us for a fool just because we are put in this tight situation due to Ketuanan Melayu program of Malay in BN.

We do not want PR Malay to fool us like BN UMNO led.

    Welcome back !

Fully agree that the best political setup for Malaysian politic is a confederation like the UK.
However, Malaya will never release Tunku Abdul Rahman’s prized catch – that was cleverly hooked from the British in years past. 40% of Federal revenue comes from oil, for the past 46 years ! The Peninsula will become destitute in seconds if not for the oil money. So, Malaya’s iron grip, directly and via proxy, is indestructible. And, however unfair and unjust that is, the indigenous people of Borneo, does not have any global strategic significance for any of the global powers to want to lend any help.

Even if you look inward for support on the Confederation model, you may find the Sarawak and Sabah Chinese may not support you. The Muslims of both states would certainly not want to break off relations with the Muslims institution from Peninsula: these are sources of generous funding. The Chinese in Sarawak had been well rewarded in the aftermath of the communist insurgency, that they may find themselves losing out in the economic space if the Federal model is changed to Confederate. If you look to your fellow indigenous people, many would still cling to the mirage of self-rule; intellectually-bonded to the message proclaimed by shouts of “Merdeka,Merdeka” – in a stadium across the South China Sea, and slowly being grilled to perfection by 1Malaysia sloganeering.

I think of it this way. Hold on to your thought and aspiration. If as I believe : that Peninsula wants to keep Sabah and Sarawak for the massive oil that the 2 states contribute to Petronas coffers – which in turn, is the Federal govt ATM machine, then believe you me, there will come a situation when that oil is going to dry up. And it won’t be that far down the road – 20 to 30 yrs.
By that time, proxies godfathers would be more receptive to the idea of a Confederation – PROVIDED the confederation model would relieve the Federal government of having to disburse so much funds to its Federal departments throughout every state.

This little hypothesis of mine, is additionally premised on the observation that there is no social bond between the Malayans and Sarawakian people. If the state becomes a waste land i.e no economic value, I have no doubt the buggers in the Peninsula mainland will drop the state like a hot potatoe. The PM may actually sell us off to Brunei, Indonesia – or even the Philippines !
And if you notice it as well: the Federal Ministers – when they come to visit, they would not want to go down to the rakyat in the hinterland. The would be scared to face the truth staring in their face, that many longhouses – were still just as they were, when the Brits gave the key to the Tunku. They would hold a briefing with Taib,Chan and Jabu, and would then be looking for the next flight home ! They have absolutely no feelings for the poor Sarawakians, especially the Dayaks – some of whom, would worship the perintah with their only pig !

No, don’t drop the Confederation idea. Lets continue it, but below the radar. And get people in Peninsula themselves to subscribe to the idea. They might like it, if the grand bargain is for the Federal budget to be trimmed down, and the Federal government would be shrinked, to reduce overall expenditure and increase efficiency. Put more $ in the state coffers – and let Sabah and Sarawak pursue their own development plan.

Meanwhile: I think the 2 option for pushing through, the type of political change that most of us in DB wants, is still via any of the PR component parties, or if it help in resource optimization – for Sabah and Sarawak PR supporters to form a political party, ally to PR.
BN under Najib seem to try to move forward with Reform, but the culture of absolute intolerance towards political opposition, is reenforcing its image as an autocratic party that serves the interest of elites in their bizpolitical venture.
A new Dayak party – is a non-starter (without any electrifying cause for its birth).

  35. Aya Bujang Tuai on November 30th, 2009 4:59 pm

Dayak to uplift their political approach. Yes, thats what is urgently needed. If we stick to the present political approach, we will be no where, going down the hill and floating down the stream. We shall never eat the fresh fruits because we can’t climb up but wait until the monkeys and squarrels climb for us and leave us with the leftovers. (Buah rian ke udah tebok tupai nya ke dipulung kitai) (Buah nangka tedai empa kera nya ke di empa kitai Dayak).

To me, forming a new Dayak base political party at this crucial moment serve no benefit to us but make things worse. It is because money and lighting projects remain the focus of voting and BN still get the nod. I don,t see any rich and wealthy Dayaks really commited to pour their money for the sake of their party and race. The previous Dayak party like SNAP,PBDS, and now SPDP all depended on other wealthy personals for financial backing which later split and destroy the party. Please learn a lesson from our past.
I have approached a bussiness sucessful Dayak friend and ask him to be a canidate for PKR in the next election, he frankly answered NO, NO. PKR only give money not enough for submitting canidate form what more to say for the campaigning period. A fence sitter I have approached and ask him which party he want to vote for, he said a party that give me more money.
If this type of approach is not change BN will still have the priority. In Malaya this type of approach has been dealt with so PR can dream of more win in the next election but not Sarawak at the present situation. Chinese PKR may be able to wrest more seats from SUPP but not Dayaks PKR, because their political approach is more advance.

BN and PKR is of course from WM and of the same origin but we should know that DSAI was and is the bullied man and knew all the BN political agenda so he is going for the change. That is why we have no other alternative for the moment but to support the revenge and change because we cannot change by ourselves and forming a new party so why not take this opportunity. It is worth trying. If PKR can’t win it is also good for a stronger opposition to balance BN grabbing power.

The other possible alternative is to dissolve SPDP,PRS,SNAP,get Dayaks PBB,SUPP, PKR members out and then we can from a new party. If this is feasible, then our ultimate dream will come true.

If UMNO, MIC, MCA can form their racial based parties for decades why can’t us Dayaks. Are we incapable or simply naive??. Capitalise on the medias, ICT, issues that matters. We must revolutionsie our struggle with different agendas, approaches. We can change things…like what president Barack Obama had said.. ‘Change we can’ Slogan. If we Dayaks establish our bonds with PR we will likely be manipulated by these malayan people. Start a new beginning, capture Sarawak gov’t in the upcoming election which we all deserve as Dayak in Malaysia.

  37. Peter Peros on February 17th, 2010 11:09 am

Uplifting Political Approach is something that the Dayak community must do NOW. As we all know Dayak had tried using many political platforms since indepentent. After almost 47 years, we found that all these political platforms used by Dayak politician are still unable to make the community excel economically. Even the NCR issues has yet to be resolved. As such Dayak live in fear of loosing their land to big companies. In education we are still behind other races.

O…Yeh..O… hah. I urged Dayak politicans to build 1 house for our own family. Do not stay in someone else house and abundant all the current insecure houses. In addition, my final reminder is DO NOT bring along your adopted non-Dayak brothers or sisters with you, for they will be never be a Dayak.

I hope my belovered Dayak brothers and sisters can take fast actions instead of talking only. No action today means don’t hope for anything tomorrow.
