A Dayak Party – Not Again

Written by Dr. John Brian Anthony

What do we want from a new party?

We want the new party to be for Sarawakian – like SNAP was but is now hindered by dead log leadership with clear direction and resources to build the party.

Can we use – SPDP? It is aligned to BN and we do not BN policies – of divide and rule. It is also a left wing government that favour the rich, elitist and the big companies. It is true that big business is good for the country but not the way BN Sarawak Sarawak approach the mining of country wealth. BN under Taib gave in too much to a selected few and also his own.

On top of that he keep too much for himself and the family to the point that those without start up capital find it extra difficult to start a venture.

Is SUPP an option – NO. It is only for big Chinese towkays. The Dayak in SUPP are given peanuts and dress like a doll for the window.

We are talking about NO to BN

Yes BN has the track record and that is because the Federal government twisted Sarawak Dayak armes under Kalong Ningkan and install their puppets in Rahman and Taib to futher ketuanan Melayu.

Why is ketuanan Melayu so painful to Sarawakian. It is all about leading Sarawak to forget about us being a nation before and now federal is getting us to become just another State in Malaysia. We are not just a state – Malaysia should NEVER have 13 States is made up 3 countries – Malaya, Sabah and Sarawak.

What is the point of going back to the agreement when we formed Malaysia.

Sarawakian do not want to be colonized again. We have been a British colony and what give Malaya the rights to colonize us – through its policies and implementation.

Why do Federal Government keep on making efforts to Islamize Sarawak. Is it not enough that Federal UMNO used Sarawak natives population to tip the balance of Malaysia demographic and make Malaysia a Malay majority country. What did we Sarawakian get from it.

NO MORE LIQUOR LICENCE

Slowly – they will cut off the secular structure of sarawak by saying NO MORE LIQUOR LICENCE TO BE ISSUED. it has been this way with Sarawak. The Federal government always do something when they think that we Sarawakian is sleeping and not paying attention to small matters.

RURAL EDUCATION

This is one of the special rights of Sarawakian  to have our own system of education. The Federal government put Rahman Yakub as a Federal Minister of Education to get him to change Sarawak privilege to that of National school.

Today – most of our graduate even do not know how to read, write and speak proper English where once we are proud of the language which is now the international language for commerce.

Sarawakian – BUT not Malay and Chinese of Sarawak – just Dayak have to accept malay teachers from West Malaysia to teach in rural schools. Why – to impart Malay values, logics, way of thinking and culture so that slowly the Dayak will accept the ways of Malays. That is why UMNO BN is not a choice for Sarawak.

Infra -Structure Development

It is true that Sarawak MPs rather sit quietly in Parliament because they are ashamed of the topics they have to talk about. Sarawak / Sabah is talking about roads, water, electricity, food, subsidy whilst the UMNO MPs are talking about Globalization, Foreign Direct Investment, Foreign Policies, Fiscal strategies, privatization, GLC structures, Management of MOF companies etc.

Why is State BN in denial over our poor condition of the State of Sarawak. Sarawak could not even get their farmers to plant rice – because Sarawak farmers are (“fools?) and cannot be taught modern farming methods and system of finance. It must only be Companies  from West Malaysia that knows how to plant padi. Sarawak farmers are only as labourers – like in the oil palm plantation, Sarawakian can only be the general labourer and earned $10 – 15 a day and yet the government say that we are not poor.

When will the BN government recognize our State problems?

Sarawak is importing rice, fruits, pay more expansive fuel and gas, have poor road, poor schools, poor health, poor thinking capabilities, without money to spend, our women rape by big business employees, our land being taken away by our own government, we Dayak declining in numbers in civil service, our oil is depleting and yet we do not seem to have a plan to accelerate development by receiving special allocation from the Federal.

Is Sarawak sold out to Malaya – all our oil taken by Federal and our land and forest taken by the political elitist few. It is a sad day for Sarawak and we are still saying that we are much better than other States in Malaysia.

What has PKR to offer?

PKR / PR should signed an agreement to commit themselves to respect the rights of Sarawak as a nation as embedded in the 18 points agreement before Sarawakian can support the party.

The Ketuanan Melayu system must stop immediately and that Sarawak must be left to its secular status in its belief system.

PKR / PR must commit to accelerated development by rising the oil royalty to 45% and dismantle the “big companies” structure. Land ownership must be made a priority – with titles and a system of land development with the land owner participation to share in wealth gained.

If PKR / PR do not want to signed those agreement – I do not see that it is any different than BN.

Conclusion

Dayak’s issues is not a priority to PKR unless the Dayak made it their agenda to fight for thier rights -BUT not necessarily through PKR/PR. PKR is more interested to retain Selangor and other States and maybe eying Johor as it provides them with much business opportunities.

Sarawak and Sabah is only important to PKR in the same way it is important to UMNO. Both parties wanted to have power to be the Federal Government and Sarawak can help them towards that end.

What we want for Sarawak is our greater autonomy and progress. No more colonozation in any form please for Sarawak.

Hey Kaban Dr. John Brian Anthony Guang (JBAG),a very good afternoon to you!

    1) What is the matter Dr.? Or what is happening Dr.?

    2) Why sudden changed in the tone of your postings Dr?

    3) Is it because Baru Bian did not include you in PKR state committee line-up?

    4) Or are you throwing the towel? Or are you losing confident in PKR leadership?

    5) Any thing to do with DL constant brainstorming in this thread (I hope not though)?
    6) What did you find lately in PKR? Perhaps you wanna share with us!

    7) What you propose DB should do now? I presumed they are also not in the know what prompted you to change your heart.

    8) Or are you testing the water?

    9) Or any promises of Senatorship from Dr. Rundi or Yangdikasihi?

    10) Or are finding your struggle in PKR in vain?
My honest suggestion: Take a short but well deserved break from blogging,…….. time for reflection.

    ==============================================

I just picked up two very telling sentences from your above article which are good enough for the Dayaks to digest.

    1) If PKR / PR do not want to sign those agreements – I do not see that it is any different than BN.

    2) Dayak’s issues are not a priority to PKR and never will. PKR is more interested to retain Selangor and other States and maybe eyeing Johor as it provides them with much business opportunities.

From what we’ve seen and heard ever scene Merdeka Political parties formed and dissolved along the 46 years.
It just like people open coffee shop on business field bila tidak laku tutup lah. or bila tidak sepala/ngam pecah lah. It’s so with the political party in Sarawak in the past.
So my personal opinion it’s not necessary to have another Dayak Political party.
Let first thing comes first Dayak has to be united. to have another party will not solve the problem it will split the Dayak into more tiny group so where is your strength your power your right that the Dayak has been dream off all this days.target at Dayak unity erase all the old memories of the DACING Erras.
This is not something new, from the first day Independence we all already has the Dayak Unity this is always in our mind but because of money, promises, power sweet influential words from others that jealous of Dayaks successes has pull out and bought by this opposite forces. That make what we are today. Some even go after Dayak right of their land, their forest that the Dayak has preserved for thousand years for their great grand grand children, but what we see today ????? only fell up certain people own pockets that’s enough not only for themselves but their turun menurun for many years to come.
    Dreams remain as a dream…..

Dayaklama….have you got something more positive to say so as to get Sarawak to move forward and have better future for our next generation to come?

Dr John is speaking the truth on how Sarawak is in Malaysia for the last 46 years which people like you and all dayak leaders in BN had been trying to keep secret from the people of Sarawak, simply because you and the only few want to have it all. Reason, there is too little left after all had been taken by Malaya and you simply don’t want more people in Sarawak to have part of it as it will be much lesser for yourself and the few of you.

Instead of asking Dr John those questions, why don’t you tell the whole Sarawakians, particular the dayaks why you support the Malaya regime that had colonized and robbed us worst than the British for the last 46 years? Speak your heart out as what Dr John did otherwise I am sorry to call such dayak “nadai biji pelir”

Or on the positive side tell us how we dayak can particapate in those international business which we are totally being left out?

  9. Dr. John Brian Anthony on November 25th, 2009 10:56 pm

Dayaklama – you have a sharp eye for detail. Yes – without greater autonomy for Sarawak should PKR win would not meet my expectation. It would be just another government with diffrent Manager but the same value system and objectives.

I really want to see Sarawak a more independent nation within Malaysia. Remember the model of Wales, Scotland and England to form United Kingdom – we should have that.

Dayak votes has been taken advantage off many times by various parties but NEVER to the advantage of Dayaks. Now we suffer and later our suffering would be more serious. It can even lead to civil unrest if the trend is not checked.

For BN and PR – there is nothing for them in Sarawak. All they wanted is our MP seats in order to form the Federal Government and the natural resources and business opportunities they could grab for themselves.

Asked ourselves this question – why is Sarawak lagging so far behind West Malaysia? Are we that stupid or are we made to look stupid are treated like fools.

To my mind – a greater self determination of Sarawak development by Sarawak is key to our future. I am not a believer of Sarawak for Sarawakian – but I want a more equitable development for Sarawak without having us lost our dignity by bowing and begging for our progress from Federal government. We must keep our sanity and pride as a former sovereign country.

We have resources and therefor we should have the right to go for a “Recovery Plan – to put right the wrong – from being weak to strong” all based on Sarawak diligent hard work and a vision of progress that is our own.

Therefor those of us who supported BN must not do so blindly so much so that we will make our future generation a laughing stock of Malaya. The same goes with those who supported PKR /PR.It must be based on a reasonable foundation and advantage for Sarawak and its population.

Dayakbaru support will NEVER be a blind support. From time to time Dayakbaru will raise issues with PKR/PR and BN in order to help them chart a reasonable direction for Sarawak’s progress.

If we cannot get what we fight for – then we must not be helpless. We must take action by taking alternative option – whatever it is but NOT a Dayak Party.

We must pursue “Mindful Politics” and be aware of the need of our nation Malaysia and also of its people. We must NEVER mind our own business and grab opportunities without conscience and govern without justice and accountability.

    Change WE Must.

In case we have no choice for a new Dayak based party, we can make our own coalition but based among our Dayak opposition parties, example, that is coalition of the ex- :SNAP, PBDS & STAR. That is suggestion of united Dayak front. We shall re-united as one strong coalition.

For our future and our rights.

I wrote a letter to anwar ibrahim few months back. I told him that I may trust him but I will never trust his right men because I believe PKR will eventually act like UMNO which is full of lies. I told Anwar that just lest Sarawak go. I always want COMPLETE INDEPENDENCE FOR SARAWAK before all of us becomes MALAYS OR MUSLIMS.

  12. batulawi on November 26th, 2009 1:35 am

For 46 years we have been looking up the UMNO / BN nostril, begging for justice and equality….only to get the slime sprayed on to our faces. To date what are our options with the BN controlled by UMNO? We get nothing and/but we lose everything, our land and our life.(culture)

JB is right. We have to clarify our expectations and demands for freedom, justice and equality to the PR or PZ or PX or whatever party that enable us to be liberated from the present evil and unjust ruling UMNO/BN.

We do not want repeat the mistakes made by our past leaders.(46 years ago) We all have to chip in constructive ideas to avoid another miserable 46 years on our part DAYAKS. PKR may not be the perfect choice but right now Dayaks have no other choice in sight. One step at a time, please.

Recently, there was a group to revive PBDS. Datuk Tajem said the group sought his advice. For all Dayaks, why not support the move? Jabu, Masing, Mawan and dayak BN elected representatives and even Taib and his malays PBB may be worry about the move.

  15. bujang timpang berang on November 26th, 2009 8:07 am

    dr john,

I think dayakthinker have a very good point and I couldnt agree more with it. To see the queen is really an excellent idea. Just before you see the queen I have a story to share with you. Back in the 50s before malaya independent, the late tunku went to see the queen asking for fredom. The queen told him that as long as there are sun and moon in the sky the queen never grant malaya independent. one evening while the late tunku strolled at the buckingham palace’s garden, it was dark and about to rain. the late tunku got an idea so he went to see the queen again. ‘your majesty I know you are a queen of word and that you always keep your promise good’. said the late tunku. you said that you never grant malaya independent as long as there are sun and moon in the sky. now you can look outside and there no moon and sun in the sky. so please keep your word and grant malaya independent. so the queen looked at the sky and there are no moon and sun in the sky since it was dark and about to rain. so the queen had no choised but to grant malaya independent. it doesnt matter whether this is a true story or a mere fiction but I hope you may get some ideas how to talk to the queen when you see her..god bless..

A splendid fairy tale there by BTB. Yes, Dr. JBA, there are quite a number of Iban folklores that you can use as reference to persuade the Queen of England to see your arguement on how Sarawak should be given greater autonomous power than it already has, when you’ve made up your mind to see her. Good luck!

    Dr. John,

I can see you and your readers are losing steam or rather faith in your dreams. Dreams are good especially the dreams are meant for change, to a better world, nation or state. But dreams too can turn into night-mares. Be on guard. Make your choice wisely.

It is your choice that decides the change. Make your choice first, after a review of the situation, and proceed from there and decide your courses of action. Dr. John, take this advice as a reminder for when you are in a tight spot, you may lose your balance and would not think straight. Take your time too.

    Good luck.

  21. MERAMAT TAJAK on November 26th, 2009 12:29 pm

Article is fully supported. This feedback is just to add a few more point, for readers to ponder and respond to.

    First,
    ——
the principle that whatever Dayak demand from the political system, clearly it has to be articulated and frame in such a way that it is good for the country, or even the region – as a whole. No matter how deserving the demand maybe, we won’t get it unless others are willing to grant it. We are either too small at the national level, or too fragmented at the state level.

    Second
    ——-

Sarawak is way behind Malaya, and as a people, Dayak is probably way behind – even the Orang Asli in Peninsula. For that reason, if we demand -make it big, and meaningful. And one that would be a quantum leap, not incremental change. It must be the difference between light and day, between staying the present course, or to make the correction.

    Third,
    ——-

Real change – is not only about the next General Election, or the one after that. The more significant the change/demand, the more difficult it would be, and the longer it would take to implement it.The key is to crystallize the change/demand into a formal position, just as Dr Jeffery had tried it with the Tambunan Declaration, and then to go on the road with signature campaign. Then keep prodding.

    Fourth,
    ——-

It looks impossible to get Dayak to unite under one big tent of a political party. I’m convinced Dayaks in SNAP, SPDP, PBB, PRS, SUPP, DAP, PKR, PAS – will never get together as a bloc.
Will PBDS revival do the trick – for political unification ? All considered, not likely. PBDS supporters and politicians – have sinced buried PBDS the warrior – and probably has completed the nyungkup and gawai antu ceremony, for him. So, any change/demand, that would make significant difference to Dayak, ironically – may have to be pushed/pedaled outside of the Dayak community. I won’t be surprised if many Dayaks in the ruling BN parties would even oppose any move to push for Dayak NCR land to be issued title, even as we think how self-defeating that stance can be !

    Fifth
    ——

This address the HOW – somewhat. I won’t discount pushing the change agenda through BN, but their decision making would be more resistant to change – too many vested interest. While it may be true that PKR,DAP,PAS – are themselves made up of seasoned politician, their coming together is a thriumph of political reform. It is a strong mandate by many Peninsula voters who wants big change in government. Therefore, it is this wave of change, that Sarawakian may want to ride on, to push for their own change agenda.Just the simple phrase Ketuanan Rakyat, has important conotation for many YBs who would be expected to be treated like royalty, and beyond reproach. The challenge it seems, PR may not have enough $resource, to even begin spreading the gospel of Ketuanan Rakyat.Or more likely, they would prefer to fight for the remaining Parlimentary seats require for them to form the next government, in Peninsula – than in Sabah and Sarawak.

In conclusion: barring any major policy shift on the part of BN coming into the next General Election, on the kind of significant change that would benefit the whole country (not only Dayak and Sarawakian), I would put my bet in PR – to take up the change/demand that we have spoken of in this blog. Should PR exclude the change/demand into their manifesto – it will not be the end of it: the change/demand can still be pursued through NGOs and other institutions in the Malaysian civil society. It is a given that BN will not want to make any change,if there is no change in support, and PR will not be fishing for Dayak or Sarawakian support if it is not in its best interest – at this time. Both Anwar and Najib is not Dayak’s best friend or the long lost Aki-Ini: and for that matter, make no illusion – neither should anyone think that Taib, Jabu, Masing, Mawan – would put Dayak interest, above theirs. But I certainly would work with anyone, including those guys, if they can agree to begin thinking of ways to uplift rural Dayak from the ravage of poverty and to earn, no less than RM 2K per month (just like the FELDA settlers) per pintu.Thats the minimum to counter the social upheaval that will likely to occur post oil-economy in 30 years. And I should add: this will not only be good for Dayak, but for all Malaysians – surely. Doable – with a little government help and serious thinking.

  23. Banting on November 26th, 2009 3:52 pm

    Dr. John Brian,

It is not that easy to form a new political party as we could imagine. The history speaks for itself.

Whereas the Federal Constitution tells us the right of all citizens to form associations, ROS may set a condition whether to approve of any new political party or not. On the other hand, the Executive may advice ROS to make a negative decision on ` security reasons ` if the new political party poses a threat to BN. It is because ` security reasons ` cannot be questioned in Court.

A good example was when Parti Sosial Malaysia (PSM) lost its appeal to go national. The High Court Judge Datuk Abdul Hamid Said, in dismissing PSM`s application maintained that national security was the responsibility of the Executive and did not rest with the Court. The Home Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Bedawi in his affidavit gave two reasons why PSM`s application was rejected, because the party was a threat to national security. MDC`s application for a registration was also rejected on the same grounds.

We have been talking of forming a new Dayak-based political party to accommodate those who are still party-less in order to participate in the development of the State and country through a political vehicle that they can associate and identify with and at the same time to establish to realize a Dayak identity and to advance allegedly Dayak interest and aspirations.

Recently, when talks were rife that a group and individuals to form new political parties in the state, some politicians especially from BN reacted negatively indicating that there were objecting and worrying. Of course, we feel that our basic human rights should not be denied including freedom of association, but ROS has its own views saying ” ROS are seeking advice from all quarters including the Home Minister.”

So, do we expect that ROS is not biased in its decision to register any political party? Anyway, good luck to ARBS, PRM and PBDS Baru.

    Banting,
    ———

ARBS ? Thats a new one for me. If its the proposed East Malaysia Party, the acronym need some serious facelift. Seriously though, a modern and progressive Sabah and Sarawak combo political party can work. At least, its a fresh thinking – to leverage like-minded people from both states. And may be the best alternative to forming yet another Dayak political party (if ever there was one).Staying put with PR is an option, but only if PR is interested in Sabah and Sarawak.BN,is probably already too successful to care for anything other than its own bizpolitics, and it has serious ground for genuinely feeling its lordship over Sabah and Sarawak has been encrusted for eternity – in the monumental structures of the new Council Negri, PELITA and the damned dams :)

    MERAMAT,

ARBS – Parti Agenda Rakyat Bumiputera Sarawak formed by sponsors of UMNO in Sarawak. Its protem Chairman admitted that there were quarters in Sarawak who opposed the formation of the new party, and even there is a perception that the existence of ARBS will be an ” excess baggage ” to BN.

Sure, PR is still the best option for Dayakbaru.

The issue highlighted by JBA and JK to seek more freedom, atonomy, semi-independent from Malaysia is looked like beyond the expectation of all Malaysia, but the reality is there as far as 18/20 points is concerned.

No Malaysian has think that Malaysia have 3 Nations; Malaya, Sarawak and Sabah. No Sarawakian has dream that Sarawak shall have their own Nation, their own law, their own PM, their own army and so on, untill the book of 18/20 points is opened. Almost 50 years we live in Malaysia and everyone always think that Malaysia has 13 states not consist of 3 Nations.

Now, why the “Change We Must” come to the extend that the native of Sabah/Sarawak began to open 18/20 points, highlighted the 3 Nation, stand to challenge the formation of Malaysia that we signed 38 years ago.

I think Melanau/UMNO Dynasty can answer this question very well especially Taib and Mohathir.

From the situation being neglected, marginize and descriminated badly so long, the native of Sabah and Sarawak will cry for the better life, better opportunity, better justice, better freedom and better respect to their identity as a native.

The Dayak leaders in gomen have been kidnapped, now they are not more than a leader begging for food from Taib and protect Taib power by killing their own people in order to keep Taib give them food.

Recently, the new Taib cabinet line up has been discussed in this blog. It is not a cabinet to solve the Dayak problem rather it is a cabinet to protect Taib power and his business teams.

This cry, I expected, will be louder and louder and something new that both Dayak and gomen need to be considered. The hard life that the Dayak experiences in daily bases that we have been discussed so much in this blog will inspire every single Dayak to be counted.

The political stand to pursue more atonomy from Malaya is something Dayak need to study carefully before it comes to consideration. The new Dayak generation associated with other native in Sabah and Kalimantan need to be counted before make up with international body.

Melanau/UMNO has been prepared themselves very well to face this stand. Free weapon have been given to certain Muslim. Dayak Senapang Patah slowly being taken by gomen. Any association look like military under Dayak banner has been demolished and banned. Bourder Scout, Iban Tracker and Police Force have been gone. Rumah Dayak are ignored of it rebuilding thro Sarawak. Only leave is the slogan of “Agi Idup Agi Ngelaban”.

For me, we do not need harsh action rather we shall consider a soft and firm solution. In this situation, I eager both Dayak, pro and contra gomen shall seat down quickly to discuss a solf and firm solution toward Dayak problem. Bring our suggestion to the PM office and any solution shall follow up with urgent implementation, strong coordination and firm action. This is including setting up Dayak Task force, atonomy negotiation, more role of Dayak in Nation Building, Special Plan to upgrade Dayak Standard of living and the rest. From the discussion with PM later, I am sure we will meet our disatisfication and satisfication.

Is there any great dissatification in PM office, from there we can call upon all Dayak to be counted for the harsh action.

    DAYAK THINKER;

You must have been DREAMING instead of thinking. What has QE 2 got to do with Dayak Baru ?Instead you could have suggested that JBA meets The UN Sec.General for human right abuses against the Dayaks?

The best would have been to keep the thought to yourself…ha…ha…Please do not blunder.

Have an ongoing roadshow all over sarawak and beyond its shores through mass media, ngos, social works, all kinds of publications, seminar, forums, conferences, interviews, news portals etc as medium of outreach so that a long term (say 2035)political aspirations of a party can get through to the general population of Sarawak as Sarawakians. Using ethnicity based party invites all kinds of resentments as it will breed doubts, temptations and guilts from all quarters both within and outside.Start afresh from the concept of BTN and model its curriculum to suit the 1 Sarawakians’needs for the year 2035. First and foremost is to own and safeguard the fundamental mainstays of sarawak: oil and gas, plantations and forests, rivers and seas, valleys and mountains, culture and tradition.
Though NCR is the most potent issue of the natives its very nature looks divisive and inclusive. There are so many procedural rights that it can strangle the “real walk” for a better future.
