Sulaiman Taib Quit as Deputy Minister

Taken from The Malaysian Insider

Dayakbaru:

This is an interesting development as a Civil Servant friend of mind relate to me a speech given by Taib recently when addressing a civil service function. Interestingly the speech is about a hour long and reading in between the line of what Taib said it is no less than indicating that he wanted his son to be the Chief Minister of Sarawak. What remain to be solved is the timing.

Timing

Will his son Sulaiman take over immediately after he steps down or will there be a “care taker” in the interim. As Sulaiman is not a member of Dewan Undangan Negeri, that may be addressed in the coming State election to allow for Sulaiman to be elected as one and also retain his MP seat.

Election Commission

About two weeks ago the Election Commission meet Taib at his office. Eventhough this is a normal duty related visit it is not usual for Election Commission to come down and meet any MB or CM. That left us with many things to guess.

Reason for resigning

Interestingly enough the reason / excuse used for the resignation is (1) Sulaiman not happy with how Sarawak is treated and (2) how he is being treated – not given things to do by Tourism Minister. That also left a lot to our imagination why he is given task to do. Is he overqualified which I think not or will he gives more problem to his direct superior.

Reading from a consultant stand point it indicates that Sulaiman may have a problem in managing inter-personal relationship with his peer and bosses and also that he may not be a positive team player in the execution of the Ministry works.

What a waste?

His appointment to Deputy Minister on his first term after being elected as MP took many by surprised as there are many more senior MP from PBB. To mention just two: Alex Nanta Linggi and Wan Junaidi.

Sulaiman was promoted over these senior MP just because his father is the Chief Minister. Imagine YB Richead Riot – i lost count on the number of terms he served as MP – SUPP will not do anything to promote Dayak at Federal level.

Sulaiman is therefor making a waste of opportunity to serve the people at Federal level. Now, can he make any impact at State level?

Sulaiman as Chief Minister of Sarawak

Taib and his Rahman Yakob would have thought long through this. We can see Rahman daughter becoming a DUN member. This is importnat development because Taib and Rahman are known to be fighting each other. By allowing Rahman daughter to become a DUN member something serious has mended to become allies for a common purpose. It be be strictly political and we just have to wait and see.

Najib’s reaction

This is the first time i heard that Najib will need to refer to “someone” else and in this case Taib on whether to accept Sulaiman resignation or not. It is the Prime Minister prerogative to select and dismiss his cabinet members. It can also mean that Taib is so powerful that the Prime Minister cannot act on anything related to him without his consent.

I will leave the “what could be” to Dayakbaru imagination. My question here are you comfortable for sarawak to be governed by ONE family? It reminds me of Sir James Brooke ownership of Sarawak before it was made into a Crown Colony.

PETALING JAYA, Dec 4 — Datuk Seri Sulaiman Abdul Rahman Abdul Taib, the son of the Sarawak Chief Minister, has resigned as Deputy Minister of Tourism, citing poor health although government sources say it relates to perceived bad treatment towards him personally and the Borneo states.

The Malaysian Insider understands that Sulaiman tendered his resignation letter to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak last month, citing his health condition as the main reason for his decision to leave the federal administration.

“Sulaiman tendered his letter to resign as deputy minister couple of weeks ago due to his health condition,” a source close to the first-term federal lawmaker told The Malaysian Insider.

“However, he will remain as a member of Parliament,” the source said.

However, sources said Najib has yet to accept Sulaiman’s resignation and he remains in the ministerial bench. However, he has not answered any questions and has only been seen once in the current parliamentary session.

It is learnt that Sulaiman had also clashed with former Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said and current minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen over his work. Sources said both ministers had shunned him and refrained from giving him duties, leading him to stay away from the ministry.

It is also understood that he made the decision to quit as a form of protest over the appointment of former MAS chief Datuk Seri Idris Jala to the Cabinet over him and other elected Sarawak and Sabah lawmakers from Barisan Nasional. The Borneo states stuck loyally to Barisan Nasional despite the swing towards Pakatan Rakyat in Election 2008.

Sources close to Sulaiman also confirmed that the politician-cum-businessman has kept away from his coalition colleagues and the ongoing Parliament session.

A few deputy ministers, when contacted by The Malaysian Insider, also gave similar remarks.

“I have not seen him (Sulaiman) for last two weeks… we tried to call him many times but no response,” said one deputy minister.

Sulaiman is the scion of long-serving Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, who has ruled Sarawak since the 1980s. Sulaiman’s mother Puan Sri Laila Taib died few months back.

Sulaiman was the former chairman of CMSB which also once owned RHB Bank and holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree.

In the last 12th general election held in March 2008, Sulaiman stood as a candidate in the Kota Samarahan parliamentary seat previously held by his father.

Following his win, he was appointed a deputy minister of tourism in the administration of then-Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, and was retained by Najib last April.

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 5 — Datuk Seri Najib Razak confirmed last night that Deputy Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Sulaiman Abdul Rahman Taib had expressed his intention to quit.

But the Prime Minister said he is consulting Sarawak Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud before making any decision.

“He had stated his interest to relinquish his position as deputy minister but I have yet to consult the Sarawak BN chairman, so just wait,” Najib said after chairing the Umno supreme council meeting here.

He refused to say when the son of the Sarawak chief minister had tendered his resignation.

Najib also said Sulaiman wanted to quit for personal reasons.

“It doesn’t matter… for personal reasons,” said Najib when asked if Sulaiman had mentioned his reason for quitting.

Yesterday The Malaysian Insider reported that Sulaiman had tendered his resignation last month, citing health reasons.

Sulaiman was the former chairman of CMSB which also once owned RHB Bank and holds

a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree.

Personally as a voter from the state of Sarawak,I think that it is not appropriate yet for Sulaiman to become the Chief Minister of Sarawak.

May be he could be appointed as an Assistant Minister if by any means he MUST hold any political Post.Do not make things so obvious lah.

But that is according to my opinion.

    Malaya hutang Borneo
    Analisis Haji Julaihi Haji Suut

Cerita kita hari ini: Malaya kantoi. Malaya tipu Borneo . Malaya putar-belit sejarah.

The Four Horsemen menamakan kertas kerja hari ini ‘Aprilfool Malaya’.

    Projek APRILFOOL MALAYA (tugasan):

    1. The Debate On The Malaysia Bill In The British Parliament 19th July 1963 (Kajian Sarah J. Brooke)

    2. How Sarawak was conned into the Formation Of Malaysia: Dr Ooi Keat Gin (Kajian James anak Bond)

    3. Separate but equal by N Shashi Kala and Ooi Ying Nee; Things fall apart By Sim Kwang Yang (Kajian Devil’s Advocate)

Sekejap bahasa pengantaraan jadi Bahasa Baku, kejap jadi Bahasa Malaysia, kejap jadi Bahasa Melayu, kejap jadi Bahasa Malaya aper ntah. Lepas tu dia banyak versi. Ada bahasa Kolumpo, ada bahasa Putrajaya, ada bahasa filem cetak rompak. Tapi pandai pulak diaorang reject ‘membutuhkan’.

Tapi pakcik tak mahu lagi dah berjuang, berbilang, berbisa, atau berbutuh dalam belukar bahasa. Banyak kali dah pakcik tulis bab-bab ni. Pendirian Kementerian Pendidikan masih serupa orang mabuk, kejap ni kejap tu. Diaorang nak aper sebenarnya – bangsa ke bahasa? Kita orang Sabah dan Sarawak , penganut setia BM zaman-berzaman, jadi bengang bila bangsa Melayu sendiri buat murtad pada bahasa dia. Tau tak per.

Kalau ikut-ikut lah kan , kalau digunapakai 20-Point Agreement (Sabah) dan 18-Point Agreement (Sarawak) semasa penubuhan Persekutuan Malaysia 16 September, 1963, bahasa resmi Sabah dan Sarawak ialah Bahasa Inggeris.

POINT 2: “Malay should be the national language of the Federation. English should be an official language of North Borneo for all purposes, State or Federal, without limitation of time.”

POINT 15: “The existing educational system of North Borneo should be maintained and for this reason it should be under state control.”

Orang Borneo masa tu semua pandai English. Ayahanda pakcik sempat buat Master lagi kat Eropah. Demi Malaysia kita orang Borneo sanggup berkorban! Demi negara, ya Allah!

Bila Borneo sudi menerima pendidikan Malaya, jangan lah pulak orang Malaya haru-birukan bahasa kita seMalaysia. Cukup lah tu.

POINT 1: “While there was no objection to Islam being the national religion of Malaysia there should be no State religion in North Borneo, and the provisions relating to Islam in the present Constitution of Malaya should not apply to North Borneo .”

Tunku Abdul Rahman saksi perjanjian kita.

    Borneo bela Malaya

Ingat ini baik-baik. Ingat sampai ke anak-cucu. Tak kira apa kata orang Malaya, tak kira apa diaorang tulis dalam buku sejarah sekolah tadika, Malaysia ditubuhkan pada 16hb September, 1963. Satu dunia tahu. Komunis-komunis pun tahu.

Debate on The Malaysia Bill in The British Parliament 19th July 1963: “During September, 1962, the legislative assemblies of (Sabah) and Sarawak adopted resolutions unanimously welcoming in principle the decision to establish Malaysia by 31st August this year (1963).”

Ingat lagi satu perkara.

Debate on The Malaysia Bill in The British Parliament 19th July 1963 (Mr. Sorensen): “I support the Bill because I believe that, on the whole, the majority of the people in the four territories of Singapore, Malaya, Sarawak and (Sabah) want Federation, if not with enthusiasm at least with what I may call prudent wisdom..”

Mr. A. G. Bottomley of Middlesbrough, East: “We are not only having an extension of Malaya . We are, in fact, creating a new (country Malaysia ) … the other Commonwealth Governments have been consulted and that they will cordially welcome the new (country Malaysia ) into the Commonwealth.”

Ingat satu lagi perkara.

Tapi Borneo masih tak suka nama MELAYU RAYA… Borneo pilih MALAYSIA . Ha! Dengar tu.

POINT 5: ” Malaysia ” but not “Melayu Raya”

Ingat satu lagi perkara. Perkara paling penting.

Sila rujuk peristiwa berdarah 13 May.

Ha! Lagi Melayu nak sombong kat orang Borneo ? Ha!

Saudara kita sendiri mencederakan kita. Saudara kita.

    Akan bersambung…

Point 12: “In principle, the indigenous races of North Borneo should enjoy special rights analogous to those enjoyed by Malays in Malaya, but the present Malays’ formula in this regard is not necessarily applicable in North Borneo .”

Soalan kedua: Boleh kah pakcik terus bercerita?

This DB who is pro PR is making up the story in hoping that everyone will hate Taib and state BN. Base on the RTM media report he resigned because of health reason. We have to believe what the main stream media said.

Even if one day it happen that Sulaiman sit on the throne, what is wrong with that? Razak was once our PM and now is his son turn, Lee Kuan Yew was once the Singapore PM and now is his son turn. When this happen within the BN the opposition and DB is making noise but when this happen in Singapore DB said it is fine and should be that way. So DB how can we trust you to champion about the perfect gomen if you act like this? You are talking about equality, transparency, just and free of cronyism, nepotism form of gomen and we hope you are not too much one sided.

    Chakui Chabu,

Constitutional crisis?hhahahahaha….we all know that is part of Rahman Ya’kub tactical manevouring to topled Ningkan and it was backed up by UMNO and that is an Open Secret. That is the beginning of Dayak’s Dilemma up until now..

Tawie Sli is just a Puppet and Rahman Ya’kub is the Puppet Master..Tawi Sli is just a Care Taker CM before Rahman Ya’kub is making his way to the CM Post..that is HISTORY..And Rahman and Taib is not Malay, they are Melanau’s.According to Federal Constitution,Melanau’s is under the same category with us,they are Natives..Dont misunderstood between Malay and Melanau

  27. Chakui Chabu on December 6th, 2009 7:36 am

That is your assumption and imagination.

Yes, indeed they are Melanaus, typing error, bro.

  28. Pengayau on December 6th, 2009 10:09 am

    Chakui Chabu,

Yes,it is a Constitutional Crisis but the Crisis itself is a Conspiracy by Rahman and backed up by UMNO Leaders to topled Ningkan.

Please check what has lead to the Constitutional Crisis at the first place?

Why Ningkan has lost the support from his Coalition Government?

Who is the Iban Leader who throw his support to Rahman/Taib instead of Ningkan?

By knowing and understanding all these Key Point,i believe its only then that you will truely understand the whole episode of our Dayak’s Dilemma right from the Topled of Ningkan and until now

  29. Chakui Chabu on December 6th, 2009 4:06 pm

    Pengayau,

I know the crisis from A to Z.

Briefly, Ningkan had lost the support of his own Alliance Party, as such he was sacked by the Governor but refused to vacate his office. On Sept 14, 1966 the Yang di-Pertuan Agong proclaimed a state of emergency in Sarawak on the basis that its security was threatened by the constitutional crisis.

Ningkan appealed his dismissal all the way to the Privacy Council but lost his appeal. Datuk Tawie Sli was appointed the new Chief Minister from the same party. There was no change of government from one political party to another political party as we could see in Perak recently.

Sorry bro, I did not know whether there was a conspiracy to topple Ningkan or not. The history did not say that. I see the crisis from a legal point of views, according to the judgment delivered by the Judges in this case.

If Sulaiman is going to be the next CM, i believe that the future for the Dayaks is going to be long gone in time. There will be no more Dayaks going to be CM, what happens to our Dayaks leaders, are they “leaders” or just followers. Why Dayaks cant step for its own land. Kesian Dayaks…

We have betrayed our own people too many times in the past. This time round please do not betray our children and grand-children and the many generations to come.

Are we so helpless and spineless as to allow known tyrants to decide on our future… bleak and sure extermination on our part.

We have been supporting and giving power to our BN YB who in turn surrender our given-power to the tyrant who in return rob us of everything we hold dear and valuable…OUR LAND.. our life.

It is our vote for the BN that gives the tyrant the rights to appoint his retarded snob son to inherit the CM seat(not throne)who would then hasten our extinction.(Dayaks extinction)

Do we use our thinking cap or our stupidity henceforth.. that is up to us. We are not permanently stupid but our choice the last 46 years proves something is wrong with us and our mind set. We have been lazy thinkers.

    Change we must!!!

An erudite commentary … but regretably, all considered, there is no body politic in Sarawak, which would be in any position to slow Taib Jr march to the Chief Minister post.

The Chief Minister position in the state is one of absolute power. I don’t think any of the State Ministers were appointed to their post, without them pledging undivided loyalty to the family, or without their political career being made helplessly dependent.

Then there is UMNO. Whatever Sarawakian may think of the YDK Chief Minister and his family, I think they still get support from UMNO – more than any other politician.I think UMNO would still want strong-man rule in Sarawak to facilitate its rule by proxy. And by his family wealth, and cultivated political control of almost every political party in Sarawak, UMNO will have no better candidate for a strong-man.

I would therefore urge a thinking, to minimize damage to Dayak interest under the scenario of continuing domination of the state politic (& economic activities) by the Taib family. There is nothing wrong with dreaming the near impossible, but its also pragmatic to try to think that it would be status quo after the next GE – or worst still, the inexperience Sulaiman could be appointed by his father as his successor, as early as by 2011. Believe me,in that event – the ADUNs would bow and kiss Sulaimans hand, just like the scene from Godfather, and would in turn, mobilise the giddy masses to shout glory to the new king of Sarawak :)

  35. Kapak Sengkalan on December 7th, 2009 2:35 pm

    Jera Asai,
Sulaiman Taib resign from his ministry post it is very clear that he is not capable to handle his position not like his father Taib. I agree with some of the comment. You just ask yourself who want to quit if there is no reason. One good comment I really appreciate is about the next race to become the Chief minister when Taib is ready to stepdown, I propose to give it to Dayak Bidayuh or orang ulu. Let give this race a chance for change to govern Sarawak since the Iban or sea dayak has been the 1st Chief minister. Let us all dayak christianity pray to God for the success to change with a new government. Belum cuba belum tahu. Agi Idup Agi Makai Agi Enseput agi bejalai. Idup bansa dayak.

After reading some of the postings in this blog, there are some that I felt ought to be clarified. Firstly, I concur with Pengayau that a conspiracy had indeed been hatched up that led to the ouster of the first chief minister of Sarawak, the late Tan Sri Datuk Amar Stephen Kalong Ningkan (bless his soul). If one had cared to read the book entitled “Politics Of Federalism”, there are passages in the book which described the conspiracy took shape, with leading players like our former TYT and CM, whilst he was still in the federal cabinet, and one Dato Syeed Kechick, in collaboratin with some top political leaders as well as those from Sarawak, too. But, of course all this will not find a place in our history books. As with other hisory books that have been rewritten, the history has mostly been distorted to suit the fancy of those in power.
Ningkan’s ouster also spelt the beginning of the end of Iban/Dayak dream to play a dominant role in Sarawak political arena. And as they say, the rest is history!

As in the case of King Solomon becoming the next CM of Sarawak to succeed Yang Dikasihi, I am sure Jabu and Abg Johari who are both Deputy Presidents of PBB will not allow him a smooth ascension to the throne. Both of these two gentlemen have been waiting too long for the old man either to kick the bucket first or exit gracefully. Either way, the old man will have to go soon. Solomon is still quite far down in the party’s hierachy when compared to the two JJs. I won’t be surprised if our beloved DCM 11 were to be appointed to succeed Pak Uban (and whose appointment would last until a suitable candidate is found). History will repeat itself just like when Tawi Sli was appointed to warm up the seat until Rahman was seen to be ready to take over. So the wheel of fortune will continue to roll!

  43. Pengayau on December 8th, 2009 2:58 pm

    gerabusengkiong,

Thanks my brother,The toppled of Ningkan is the BEGINNING OF DAYAKS’ DILEMMA which has last to this very day. That was my personal testimony and by having you to concur with my opinion and thoughts, its a great honour for me to Thanks you and how i wish that all of us KNOW or REALISE the TRUTH!!!!!!

No,Jabu WILL never ever became a THREAT at all in case of Sulaiman taking over Chief Monstership from his Father.Abg Joe,YES.im very sure that he might not fight with Sulaiman but he WILL ensure that there is NO smooth ascension to the THRONE.

Do you remember when he had defeated Adenan Satem for Vice Presidency of PBB?Back then Adenan were seen as Taib favourites. It is an open secret that Taib has back Adenan in that Election but Abg Joe with the support of PESAKA wings has put Adenan to an early retirement.

But to say that there going to be a CARETAKER CM before Sulaiman taking over?just like Tawie Sli(Puppet) before,i would love to say yes.And if that did came true,i believe there would be an INTERNAL fightings among PBB Leaders.

Now when Taib is still in Power, there is not much that they can do but im very sure, when Taib is out,his INFLUENCE might remain but Abg Joe and the GANGs could still win the battle if taking into consideration of Sulaiman Hierachy in PBB..

King Solomon ? I like that. Finally, Sarawak will have a King in 2011, fancy that !

Its better than YDK. And, since Sarawak would have a king, then the Federal constitution would have to revised. I can smell it already: probably to grant equal status to the Sarawak King to have a chance as one of the Agong ? Now thats equality for Sarawakian !

Take this further. Come to think of it, there is nothing in the State Constitution to prevent the ADUN to create an alternative Head of State. So, why not abolish the Governor, and create a King ?

Or at least – create a sultanate ? Err .. Sultan Solomon ? What say you all ?

On the likely replacement for the next CM, besides King Solomon … nah, can’t think of anyone else. Taib and supporters will surely not allow anyone else to step into the throne, not even to warm it up. Jabu/Johari will be happy to be caretaker CM, if invited – but for the life of me, I can’t see why Taib would need a caretaker Chief Minister for his son. He must have taken his son aboard a Nuri from Kuching to Limbang, and with misty eye would whisper to his son, “see below, all these will be yours … “. Jabu,Joe etc – eat your heart out.

Aku tetap pecaya Awang Tengah akan bertindak nyadi pengacau ngagai org bukai ti deka sabotaj program Taib.. Kuasa ke bisi ba Awang Tengah diatu sigi luarbiasa.. Faham jangka aku kita semua bala DB…

One way to ‘ngelaban’ Taib is to make chaos happen inside PBB just like MCA did now… Tussle for power would happen, and if our Dayak leader are smart, then that is the time to react.. form a political pact with each other and fight together… the same tactics done by Liow Tiong Lai and the gangs! Anyway my friend, anything can happen in politics… The one who can manipulate the situation, would be the winner.. In this case, can Dayak be the winner? Let wait and see…

  47. MJC on December 8th, 2009 5:43 pm

    Dr. JBA & DB,

All your theories and presumption surrounding Sulaiman’s resignation are all wrongs & cooked-up. You all probably not in the know coz you do not have access to those in the corridor of power (being pro-opposition).

Let me tell you for fact that being a “reluctant politician” DSS with never be in for the throne. He will never be a successor to Taib. Take my words.

    Why he resigned?

Before her last breath on 29/4 Laila Taib gave her will through CM to divide the tangible assets equally among the 4 children. Taib were done with division in Sept. 2009 after spending some five months and gave USD 1.8billions each. Now DSS for obvious reason cannot bank-in the cash to his bank account. He asked that his share of the cash be “parked” with younger sister, Anifah Taib’s bank account in Singapore. The problem arises coz DSS do not trust Anifah Taib’s husband, Alwee (a Singaporean). So in order to get and enjoyed his share, DSS is left with no choice but to resign.

That is a correct & calculated move, after all what is RM12,000.00 per month salary compared to the USD 1.8 billions. If I were him I would have made the same moved. Make sense folks?

Sulaiman resign with two main reasons.

Odd response from the Federal people on his post as Deputy Minister in KL due to uncapable, inedequate of experience, leak of real educational, too young for the post if compare to the present Ministers.

Taib Dynasty Plan to rule Sarawak. Main reasons. Next step by Taib, we will see it.

There is no family matter only the excuse. 1.8 Billion USD is not the reason. There are Hundreds of our Minister and YB cash their money more than that.
