2010 Budget barely got through

Dayakbaru:

BN should be more serious with their approach of governing Malaysia. If BN is to tired and too personally rich, they may step down and make way for Pakatan Rakyat who seem to have more ideas and professionalism in the conduct of their duties.

In Sarawak, the DUN would need to take their work seriously. Dr. James Masing leading the BN YBs to walk out of the Dewan when DAP is tabling a motion on NCR land matters is a grave misjudgment. The people in the long house might not know the unfortunate episode but educated Dayak will remember the “walk out” a long time as is symbolizes the attitude of BN towards Dayak NCR land issues.

66 vs 63

It is not a laughing matter but many can laugh at how incompetent and in cohesive BN MPs are. Should Pakatan Rakyat would have succeeded, there well be no salary for the Civil Service as no approval to spend money is obtained.

Speaker must not take side

The Speaker statement that the defeat of the budget tantamount to a vote – of no confidence in the government even though stretching the imagination a way bit too march is a warning to voters that BN is not serious in carrying out their duty.

For the Speaker, he expected that the Opposition would have agreed on the budget because it has been debated a few days. That is a dangerous assumption because voting in Parliament would mostly follow party line.

DEC 16 —  When all is said and done about the “shambolic” narrow vote over Budget 2010 late Monday night, Gombak MP Azmin Ali got it half-right.

BN Whip lack of planning

It wasn’t that the ruling Barisan Nasional lawmakers were not committed to Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s first budget but it was more a lack of planning by their Whip to get them in the House.

BN MPs not told – then they should find out

Some BN MPs said they were not told that the Budget would be voted on Monday, which went 66-63 in their favour thanks to the appearance of the prime minister and Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat.

It wasn’t a good excuse but they pointed out that some BN lawmakers are still on pilgrimage leave while some front-benchers like International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapha Mohamed and Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Hussein are away on government business.

BN Blaming Game

They laid the blame for their absence squarely on BN Chief Whip Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, the deputy prime minister, for not planning to get most of them there for the vote.

His deputy, Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz, who is Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department and a person who pulls no punches, also did not direct them to turn up.

Muhyiddin and Nazri not in talking term?

“Perhaps their public exchange over whether Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad can be called a racist kept them from talking to each other,” a BN MP told The Malaysian Insider.

He also confirmed that they have not received any warning for not being present at the crucial Monday vote.

Chief Whip – Do your work

“The Chief Whip will have to send a lot of warning letters to even someone like Pak Lah,” chipped in another BN MP, referring to former prime minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi who is Kepala Batas MP.

Buddy System?

Nazri today suggested a ‘buddy system’ for the BN lawmakers pair up and ensure one of them will be in the House for voting, adding it would be better if they all turned up for parliamentary sessions.

Datuk Seri Tiong is sulking

A few BN MPs were not too sure that all 76 backbenchers feel the same way especially with hints that BN Back Bencher Club (BNBBC) chairman Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing is apparently sulking about his company, Kuala Dimensi Sdn Bhd, being largely blamed for the Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ) fiasco.

“The BNBBC chairman normally organises for all of us to turn up. He didn’t say anything to me,” said one BN MP about the popular Bintulu MP who last year took 40 BN MPs to Taiwan to prevent cross-overs to the Pakatan Rakyat.

BN not communicating well

“There is some unhappiness on the BN side. We are not communicating well to make sure we defend ourselves against the opposition,” another MP admitted.

So What – it is BN that has been made embarrass

He also pointed out that PR lawmakers might crow about planning the ambush but they still failed. “It is easy to talk after the fact even for them. Both sides now have to ensure full attendance,” the two-term lawmaker added.

PKR Action

Azmin, the PKR vice-president and Pakatan Rakyat Chief Whip, was himself on medical leave but that shouldn’t take away from the fact that PR nearly scuttled Budget 2010.

BN can’t take the opposition for granted:

that they face a weak opposition or that they have numerical strength over them in Parliament.

Monday night is another lesson that after the Election 2008, the rules of the game changed.

Lesson Learn by BN

From now on BN has to be on its toes for any mistakes or omissions, like not budgeting their assets for a crucial vote, that could put them on the backfoot and bring PR closer to Putrajaya.
