Dayak Focus in Education

Written by Dr. John Brian Anthony

Dayak Disadvantage

Today, the door is almost shut to senior government position in the Federal and the State Civil service for Dayak.

We must not blame anyone for it – because it is a fact that members of the Public Service Commission are made up of various races and Dayak is well represented. Maybe those of you who knows the Dayak representative in the PSC should share the information with Dayakbaru.

Were these Dayak PSC members bullied by other races. It looks most likely. I used to know people who were appointed to PSC members having education not higher then Form Three. We do not expect them to have a bigger picture of their job. To them they are just over the moon after having been appointed to the job.

What can we do now?

We should focus on pushing the Dayak into an active agenda for Education. In Education because of our few in numbers we should focus on certain profession – a list according to importance: Law, Accountancy, Engineering and Teaching. You can argue out why the list is as such.

Scholarship

Despite being categorized under BUMIPUTERA – our numbers given scholarship is small. One of the limitation we faced is always poor communication – where we do not received the information on timely basis. Many of us living in the rural areas do not have the mean to come to town regularly. As such many golden opportunities pass by us.

The radio is still the best mean of delivering such message. The phone in programme – to leave messages is now not properly utilize in the Iban programme that I do know of. We should encourage more urban Dayak to make phone call to inform the rest in the long house of opportunities in Education.

Dayak Scholarship

We seldom hear – or never hear of Dayak Scholarship fund solely finance and manage by Dayak. The Bakun Scholarship fund is a failure. I have one Penan boy who needed to stay with me to continue his studies as he has not received money promised by Bakun Education Fund to buy food, pay for transportation etc. It is a real hope for the Bakun folks but ended in shame due to mismanagement.

Then we heard of Dayak Cultural Foundation. It opens “Tuition” classes in almost every town in Sarawak. After 2 years if i can recalled correctly, all classes are shut and sold as there is no more money from the Dayak Cultural Foundation.

Our Dayak inability to manage such Fund is alarming or were the fund over stretch and politicized. Why is there no sustainability – in the programme, I wish I know the reason why.

Education Motivation Talk

The BN Ybs stop this going if they come to know of it. YB Sylvester Entri ( I hope this is how to call him because I do not know his Muslim name) he stop a well plan motivational activity organized by Dayak youth. The same happened in Tatau and lately YB Peter Nyarok, a former school Head Master stop such educational motivational talk because he associate the event with opposition.

But the, we do not hear the Dayak YBs arranging for such talks to be given to rural schools. Is the correct way of pushing Dayak education agenda forward by politicizing it?

Motivational Talk given in Wai FM

One day I was listening to the radio and this programme came up. I sat and listen to what was said by the motivational speaker. It was unbelievable what was said. It was not based on structure, no objective, no content but full of empty statement and a muddle up value system. I would say it is a good programme to promote Islamic values  the Dayak in the long house.

Whoever allow such programme to continue should have his head examined for faulty reasoning.

How do we Dayak expect to progress. There are so many Dayak academician and well qualified and experience to talk on such matter and the government is not tapping on the pools of talent. Is this link to politics again.

Conclusion

Dayak should have a symposium to talk about ways to uplift Dayak potential in education. We have not fully exploited this opportunity or made education as a fundamental value system for the community.

We should set systematic ways to develop Dayak in education and even create Dayak education using mother tongue. National schools should only form part of Dayak education while we should focus on other key areas – early intervention, early monther tongue education, special literature classes etc.

We support you Doc to promote the awareness on the importance of education to all. This advice does not only come from DB but our BN gomen/iban leaders are stressing on this point as well. During those old days like our time where canning is still allowed, i was once being canned because i failed my mathematic by concerned Semenanjung Mathematic teacher. Reason is because this subject is very important and you cannot afford to fail it in the exammination.
You know Doc, i just cannot bear the shame as my friend are beaming from ears to ears and laughing at me while i receiving the whacking of 15 strokes standing on the chair in the classroom. There are 10 of us taking turn to receive the humiliation. From that incident i put much struggle on the subject but well i really dumb and still cannot score to distinction but at least i managed just to get fair result.
I really thank a lot to this Semenanjung teacher because of his concerned towards our education achievement and i wish we should have more of them. Well my wish was fulfilled as the gomen are sending more and more of them to teach in Sarawak.
These teachers are not only to educate but also to foster close relationship between East and West Malaysian, and this is another form of education to know each other better.

    Dear JB,

Maybe we can request the SDGA (Sarawak Dayak Graduates Association with this. They have a pool of talented people to do it voluntarily for the Dayak society. This is the time where the graduates have to give back to the society.

SDGA, you have members within the Sarawak and yet your activities only focus on few areas in the state. What happen to your branch members?

  6. Kerani Opis Welfare on December 28th, 2009 12:11 pm

    Doc,

what type of education we are talking about?

by all means i agreed we you Doc, profession like
law, medical, accountancy, engineering and teaching are all very important.

not a laughing stock Doc, as a person who finished form 5 and drop-out of OUM, i think the most important education for the the dayak is the education in the form SEX Eduction.

as i read in the journal, in the western countries, sex education is a must in every course be it in the colleges or univerties, just like ours here Tamaddun Islam.

just a narrow minded soul, i think sex education can teach the dayak how to play safe sex, birth control, to prevent aldultry, to teach the dayak youngsters that sex before marrige is prohibited by the law or religion and many more taboo that need to be known in related to se..

through this course, i meant sex education, the dayak will gradually DISIPLINE THEMSELVE and treat the opposite SEX with much respect and crime related to its such as prostitutions and crime of passion will drastically become reduce.

    ain’t it just great Doc.

in fact, we are not only teach the dayak to disipline themselve but improve the dayak the way of thinking, doing thing, looking through things ahead, to face the brave new world.

though i not and faraway a member of SDGA, but they can put this matter into ones of their agenda in the near future.

    to a question of
“Today, the door is almost shut to senior government position in the Federal and the State Civil service for Dayak.”

well my track record, speak for itself. as a dayak i only become a kerani opis gred N17, while other races specially the B not A or The M not D are the ketua pengarah, timb. pengarah, pengarah negeri, pengurus besar kanan. ketua accountant and many, many senior positions are belongs, control, entrusted to them for life.

you are quite RIGHT again Doc by saying, “..We must not blame anyone for it – ”

anyway happy christmas and new year 2010, everyone. keep the camera rolling.

Are you sure that a Dayak lad will get into the government/civil service once he excells in SEX EDUCATION ????

Which University in the country is teaching SEX EDUCATION as a major ???

I am totally stunned by your comment,I do not believe that I have progressed into SENILITY as yet.

  8. John Hock on December 28th, 2009 1:04 pm

    Dear Dr. John,

    Education:
Thanks for DB efforts in providing free motivational talks to Dayak students. Well done Doc. Please continue your effort and I hope more and more educated Dayak will join you to extend such program to rural areas through out Sarawak.

    Civil Service:
Nowadays, more and more Malayan come to Sarawak to fill high positions in govt office especially in federal depts / agencies. It is a part of the ketuanan policy. Dayak YBs have no say about it…only yes boss n “saya yang menurut perintah”.
Those who appointed as PSC members don’t dare to speak when it comes to selection of the candidate for high posts in govt offices because they have to say “yes boss” to the ketuanan. Thus, Dayak need to come out with new ideas – how to change the situation…perhaps CHANGE WE MUST is the best solution.

Even to get jobs in Govt linked companies, you need a “big cable”. Recently, 3 persons who are relative to a YB can get job in stmb and as a matter of fact they appointed to their respective jobs at the same day. It’s how BN system works.

    Scholarship:
Nowadays, a lot of things have been politicized by BN YBs. If you are not the konco2, you don’t have much chance to get govt scholarship. I know some people who used “back door” to get scholarship from Yayasan Swak because they are konco2 to the politician. They don’t have to follow the normal procedure….see what happens in Swak.

    Cheers,

    John Hock

    Top Ten Dayak Education Policy

    10. Dayak just need to master English and Mandarin, the language of business and modernity.

    9. Send Dayak kids to Chinese schools. Re-train the Dayak DNA as smart as Chinese.

    8. Speak Dayak language, English to your kids at home. Don’t use excuses as gomen staffs must follow urang laut family lifestyle. WTF you called your Apai as Ayah. Beka sial kalah ngenak bansa laut kah?

    7. Dayak teachers must serve inside Sarawak schools first. It’s clearly stated as per 20-pts agreement in regulating the Borneonisation policy.

    6. Don’t waste Dayak dropouts, send them for skill trainings such as Giatmara etc. Now make use of that Bumi status for enrollment and loans, if not for what.

    5. Re-introduce Bible Studies as reminder to all Dayak kids: Christianity by far the BEST religion of all. Anywhere you go nothing can convert you, never!

    4. Introduce Dayak History subject as reminder to all Dayak kids: Kalong Ningkan is a Dayak tragedy of Dayak pissing own Dayak under Ketuanan Bansa Laut proxies.

    3. Every Dayak family must keep at least one calculator and BM-English dictionary…just to avoid from being cheated by some policy that sounds like Let’s Chase Dayaks Away(LCDA) just to give Such A Low Crappy Returns Annually(SALCRA) or something like that.

    2. Discard all types of evil black magics. Just because black magic undefined as criminal act doesn’t mean Dayak can abuse it freely.

    1. Repeat No.9-’Send Dayak kids to Chinese schools. Re-train the Dayak DNA as smart as Chinese.’ Remember, smart Dayaks are threat to BN which is GOOD.

    Dear friends,

During a Christmas gathering a Foochow friend proudly told us. In the fifties and sixties, Foochows were poorer than the Dayaks of today. But then the Foochow parents kept on telling their children, relatives and friends, “To be doctors are very good”. That was the encouragement the Foochows gave to their children, friends and relatives. Today we see there are many Foochow doctors in Malaysia and Singapore.

    Dr. John,,

How about planting garu trees to produce Dayak millionaires in 6 to 7 years?

You have not response to my suggestion. The maths is simple: plant 1000 garu trees in NCR lands or own lands. 1 garu tree with damar can fetch up RM5000 in export market. So 5 millions in 6-7 years. Then use this money to fund education etc.

  12. js on December 28th, 2009 7:26 pm

    Dr. John

You have mentioned the PKR’s Strategic Director or something like that in a previous response. Would your ideas be included in the Swak PKR’s dayak agenda manisfesto?

I think the PKR’s genertal policies should be translated into more projects, programs and initiatives so that the voters can see clearly the promised changes to be implemented if PR wins Swak.

it seem to me we are not ready in new critical, logical and lateral thinking to face a brave new world.

we are too afraid or ignorant to CHANGE!

so sorry and pity are the words given to a typical DAYAK IBAN who cannot accept the SEX EDUCATION POLICY or courses related to its.

not that i like to say that, they are caterogised as a group of bunch called inferiority complex in thinking with a narrow blunt minded which is one of the factor in hindrance toward progress.

to the king, Raja Merom and so called retired teacher/Pengajar udah pencen and others who have the same thinking toward sex education policy/courses, i shall say, Change We Must.

    Tabi Blogger (attn…JS),

Hello friend JS, I am very sceptical about your Garu tree project, projected to fetch a profit of 5000.00 per tree after 6-7 years.

I think you have to show the Dayak here in detail on the method of planting and the most important thing is the marketing.

I hope you not interested in marketing your nursery only, without considering the investment return of the dayak farmer after 7 years commitment.

If you have been so successful, you are not blogging here but playing golf and in casino in Macau. Don’t talk nonsense.

One of Dayak Ministers was once even went to China with a couple of business man visited Jotropha plantation. Later on, some of the Dayak farmer influenced and started a farm. But what happened now they do not where to sell it. THAT IBAN FARMER NOW IS DUMPING THE SEED FOR THE FEED OF HIS PIG.

Finally on 30-8-2008 national news: “The cost of growing jatropha needs to be ascertained before it can be fully commercialised by smallholders”, says Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Datuk Peter Chin Fah Kui.

Another case, the planting of Kayu Jati project. A forest officer friend advised a dayak farmer to plant about 50 acres of Kayu Jati. AFTER 15 YEAR, THE TREES IS ONLY GOOD ENOUGH FOR WALKING STICK.

But I have big tree of Kayu Jati in Danum Valley in Sabah, owned by Datuk Hariss Salleh, former CM Sbh. the tree are as big 5 feet round (circumference), and being harvested now.

Please JS, do not propagate the silly idea to Dayak. It is better for you to advise them to cultivated oil palm or rubber trees. BN Govt is providing subsidy and advice to longhouse farmer for these 2 crops.

    Nya aja kaban.

The graduate dayaks should not thinking working in gomen sector will give them job security. There is no such thing is permanent jobs in this world. If you found flouting the rules and talk against the gomen you will be demoted and greater chances being sack.

However we give fullest support to DB to stress in this important issue and it would be more meaningful if this talk was from the people who did not alliance themselves with the opposition PKR. Sorry for being saying that but however since this came from this political blog so we cannot avoid from looking into the political perspective interest. Education should be among the top priority list in DB other than their struggle to achieve their political aspiration to form the next gomen in Sarawak. So DL group should give a thumb up sign as an applauding to DB initiatives.

Now DB the Chinese, Indian managed to send their children to universities because they are financially independent. Are they born rich? No they are not but they can managed it is just because they treated good education is a must achieve target. The successfull Chinese can screw the gomen upside down because they never expect any help from the gomen but did they do it? No they don’t because they did not gain anything from going against the gomen as long as there are opportunities around. Do the majority chinese other than the politician who admire being given the position and power as the ministers condemned any chinese politicians of being rich? No because the chinese believe it is natural desire to be rich.

How many chinese are Tuan resident, D.O, police constable, gomen clerk around? Did the chinese demanding for such position or are the majority chinese like to work in the gomen and everyday have to entertain the peoples needs and never think of their own needs? No their thinking are not like our Dayaks thinking as they will put priority in their success and this will motivate them to compete openly to get the opportunities. Do you know that the graduate chinese would prefer to sale insurance and become saleman rather than working in gomen earning RM1500 starter salary and working in the air condition room or in the twin tower of Petronas.

So Dayak graduate must not relying to compete in the affirmative action cocoon but must be able to distinguish themselves and look, talk, think more like the chinese and Indians.

    Well…just must opinion.

    KOW,

Thanks for calling me king or whatsoever lah. What I mean is that your so called SEX EDUCATION POLICY is not the priority at this point and time and may never will be important in the near future. Sorry bakih.

What all of us, including you I presume, is more Dayak especially Iban to graduate in important field such as doctors, engineers, accountant, architect, economics and etcs. not sex education please. In this way they could contribute effectively towards nation building as the country progress.

Like you say, the perintah is very kind and giving us every opportunity to progress. So why miss this golden opportunity. We cannot afford to become lowly paid ulun to the chantung all the time (no offence to the ulun, please).

Those chantung, especially the kayu balak and sawit tycoon, sit comfortably in air-con office, fly in first class and stay in first class hotel, live in big bungalows, talk big and show off. Whileas, the Iban work as ulun to the chantung timber tycoon and live in deplorable condition.

KOW, you should help as you have connection with the perintah. Ehem ehem.

“Planting garu trees is a silly idea.”

You are right with your concerns.

The details were stated by Deputy Speaker Dewan Negara and it’s on the news. You can search in internet for the news.

Usia in Sabah is encauraging each of its members to plant 1000 trees per family.

Marketingwise, why not let BN or PR throw in some ideas?

To say somebody’s talk is nonsense & silly idea is too much and unmatured mind.

My nursery is for me only. So no promotion here. But you can buy from one of the doctors in Forestry for RMN50 per seedling.

You can keep advising folks to plant oil palms and rubber but how many Dayak millionaires produced by now?

SO what are your suggestions to make a bid difference among the Dayaks i.e. to produce Dayak millionaires as dreamed by Dr. John?

However, your big heart get caught by the smart DB because you didnt know what are you talking about, sex education?

In some countries the syllabus in the colleges & universities do include the sex education but not all courses they take must incorporate the sex education.

You know why some western countries encourage the academic institutions to incorporate sex education in the syllabus? Because majority of the teenagers have sex with multiple partners before they get married.

Quite a number of them get infected by the sex-related diseases and pregnancies etc. If the govt has no control over it their future generation will not be able to maintain their country supremacy in term of finance, medicine, engineering, defense etc.

Unggal KOW, I prefer we maintain status quo, nibuh ka master sex education laban kitai udah cukup sex awareness the dont’s & do’s from our parents, churhes. Those who commit adultery ukai enda cukup diajar pasal safe sex tang terlebih belajar sex especially our YBs and the VIPs.

The government can introduce sex education at secondary school level but not necessary for the students to master it unless KOW can find a place and recruit the graduates to become sex instructors with good pay, porno studio?

  27. Modern Iban Prototype No 1 on December 30th, 2009 2:31 am

Dayaks in Sarawak, especially Ibans, are primitive, naive and backward. A chawat mentality monkey is pleased to vote for a malay government that discriminates and kills off his children and the children of his dayak neighbours, is the kind of attitude that symbolizes the oppression and tyranny of the IBAN MONKEY RULE.

If Ibans want to progress from chawat mentality and monkey politics, they must first suffer the MAXIMUM punishment for their collective stupidity and greed. And that means SLAVERY of the IBAN.

Don’t worry, Ibans still vote for slavery. That is chawat people for you.

  28. Deo on December 30th, 2009 9:02 am

    DB Readers,

    “ANANG NGIGAU”

Deputy Dayaks Paramount Chief DS William Mawan explained that the opposition (PR) does not have the might of the state BN, thus BN will still win the next state election. “Opposition party like PR dreaming and planning to wrest power from the state BN and forming their own gomen is what we call day dreaming”.

DL meanwhile described PR’s dream as “Ngigau”.

  29. John Hock on December 30th, 2009 1:44 pm

    DB & friends,

Sometimes dream can become a reality. It’s good to dream of success because it is the starting point for one’s efforts…like an old Chinese proverb quote:”a thousand miles journey begins with one step”. So, keep up your efforts DB and walk the talk. Nothing comes easy especially in defending and championing the Dayak’s rights. DB has begun with the framework ie Dayak Agenda. The next step is to walk the talk and fulfill the agenda.

Here I would like to suggest that DB organizes talk on capacity building especially to the rural Dayak community. The topics may include: education, employment opportunities, economic activities, self-discipline, scholarship, welfare, land development, financial management, etc.
Provide opportunities for the participants to express their feelings on the current issues particularly in Dayak community development.

Other than that, DB may conduct a study on the impact of development programs which have been implemented in the rural areas in relation to living standard of the rural Dayak community. The findings of the study can be used as the key factors to be considered in planning the development programs for rural Dayak community in the future.

DB may also prepare a frame work for a short term and long term plans for Dayak community development. Those who are in the corridor of power might not be agree with my suggestion, but at least DB shows its ability to provide an alternative frame work as a way to formulate new strategies for developing the Dayak community.

    Cheers,

We support you Doc to promote the awareness on the importance of education to all. This advice does not only come from DB but our BN gomen/iban leaders are stressing on this point as well”.

    ————————————————

“YB Sylvester Entri…… he stop a well plan motivational activity organized by Dayak youth. The same happened in Tatau and lately YB Peter Nyarok, a former school Head Master stop such educational motivational talk because he associate the event with opposition…. Dr JBA

    ————————————————-

    Changop4D,

It makes me wonder how on earth could you claim to be supportive of efforts by Dr when it is apparent that our Iban YBs as in this example are dismissive of efforts to promote Motivational Talks.

How many times do you want to deceive us that Iban YBs are indeed extending a helping hand when attepmts by some concerned Ibans ,like ME from Miri, has been rejected outright without giving plauisble reasons acceptable to those who really need them?. How come now it has become a culture of Iban YBs to dimiss viewpoints from other experienced and knowledgeable folks in their own fields, thinking that only they themselves are capable in giving knowledge to the community?.

It would be idealistic to leave the role of giving Motivational Talks to those earning their living in this field rather than relying on Iban YBs who are only good in making promises. The poor Ibans folks are easily deceived by this type of YBs. To be honest, the job of teaching or motivating people is not for the YBs. These days are gone!. Perhaps, it is not wrong to say that this was the practice in the 60s or early 70s.

Iban Ybs, however, still could be playing a differrent role these days. They may seek some advice from SDGA to identify the experienced persons professional enough to carry the tasks effectively.

    Changop4D,
As for me, I still continue to do my small part to educate the Iban children, giving emphasis on the importance in getting decent knowledge. I also stress that having good discipline a factor factor to be accounted for in ones’ drive to obtain proper education. So far, it has been a small success as I do so without having to cheat, deceive and bluff others like some YBs.

The act of YB Peter Narok in Saratok a few days ago is uncalled for. It does not fit his character as an Ex-school Principal who should have known the real value of knowledge. It also does not fit him as a YB. In fact, it tells us that he is in longer relevant to his constituents in so far as education is concerned.

Unggal Pengayau, perhaps you should make use of this weakness of this Krian YB as part of your strategy in this coming SE.

Whatever it is, these two Ybs ought to be considered as unsupportive of Dayak Education.

    Cheers…

    “ANANG NGIGAU”

    ————————————————-

    DEO,

Just wanna let let you know that everything begins with a dream. You shall not so sure that your Bn government cannot be toppled. You must not be so selfish that BN government will be forever there till eternity. There is no such thing in this world. Even solid Chinese Dynasties have changed six times. Bn goernment is only 46 years old.

Therefore, even if the BN governemnt cannot be defeated today or in this coming SE, there no guarantee that it will not be defeated at all in the future.

Well, there is somthing nice about dreaming. No doutb it appears to be a dream today whereby people would not give it a damn thought, if and only if the dreamer keep on doing it everyday, every year and every century in real world, it will become a reality.

Therefore, today it looks DBs are dreaming but when DBS start to make concerted efforts to tackle Dayak Ibans issues, the State government better take heed. At least, Aya Awan says that what written in the Dayak blog should not be taken lightly. To me, it is a kinda good sign. After all, DB is only venue for an intellient forum.

Therefore, DBS, please keep on dreaming and take action evevry month, then it will surely be a reality. Badu agi kitai dikumbai sida iya NGIGAU ila.

    CHeers…

“However we give fullest support to DB to stress in this important issue and it would be more meaningful if this talk was from the people who did not alliance themselves with the opposition PKR”….. DayakLama

“So DL group should give a thumb up sign as an applauding to DB initiatives” …

    ——————————–

    Unggal,

Exactly, you are singing the same tune, boosting to support Dayak Education by giving FULLEST support. How this possibly be?.

To me, one just cannot give a fullest support by imposing some condition like; one must not alliance oneself to an Opposition party. It sounds like you are defending something to serve your masters only. Full support means cooperation is extended to achieve the intended objectives without sidelining anybody; as in this case, the Dayak Education.

Would prefer your claim of support to be proven to the Iban society. So far, it seems like your efforts are merely rhetorics.

    Cheers…

drastic dan extremenya sehingga MIP.NO.1 menyuarakan Solagan kata seperti,”…they must first suffer the MAXIMUM punishment for their collective stupidity and greed. And that means SLAVERY of the IBAN.

Don’t worry, Ibans still vote for slavery. That is chawat people for you.”

kepada minda yang peka, kata-kata punjangga tersebut memang mempunyai “Apa yang tersirat dalam yang tersurat” jika dihalusi dengan teliti.

i, in my capability as a kerani opis welfare has my jugdgement toward the Monkey Iban matter long time ago. the verdict was it is an O.C. toward this poor tribe.

    KOW,
Sometimes it’s better to keep ur comment to urself.
    Eg.
i meant sex education, the dayak will gradually DISIPLINE THEMSELVE and treat the opposite SEX with much respect and crime related to its such as prostitutions and crime of passion will drastically become reduce.

May I ask you, what is the link between SEX and DISCIPLINE? If you practice polygamy, then perhaps, yes, it includes discipline to be fair in sex to ur mistresses.Other than that, very doubtful.

    Happy 2010!

Rethinking, pondering, strategising the Dayaks agenda for 2010. Every individuals in the Dayak community should merge and initite the core issues/agendas affecting our social strata.

The fundamental issues need to be addressed first before we leap to a new dimension, be it politics, Education, social issues etc…

We must not be complacent with what we have now, so we need to be proactive, creative and innovative to face the new paradigm in our struggle.

Think of what our future generations will be like, when we no longer exist in this world anymore……. there’s no turning back!

The word bumiputera is equal to malay. There is no such thing as Dayak being considered by bumiputera. Everything is about Malay. They eat on table, we constantly eat on the floor. Even chinese and indian are better treated than the dayaks. We are still here, keeping our anger to ourselves because of Our Lord Jesus Christ. But war is inevitable. If there is no war, there will be no peace.

it should be called SARAWAK DAYAK UNION PARTY [SADUP}….sorry BN!
