608,000 NATIVES LIKELY DISPLACE – SARAWAK SCORE

Posted by gkm2020

Malaysia and China have signed a deal to displace Borneo Natives

Malaysia and China had signed a deal on Monday (Jan 11, 2010) last week in Kuala Lumpur between the Malaysian Government and investment firm 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) and the China State Grid Corporation (SGCC) and was witnessed by the Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak and Sarawak Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud.

China’s leading power grid operator SGCC and Malaysian development fund 1MDB said they will establish massive energy projects worth US$ 11B (€7.6bn, £6.9bn) in Sarawak, East Malaysia.

The State says, the development will transform Sarawak’s economy by allowing it to produce competitively priced energy and encouraging investment in energy intensive industries that will trigger further industrial development.

Thousand of natives are expected to be relocated

This Sarawak’s controversial energy masterplan is being developed under a cloud of secrecy despite its far-reaching impact on a significant part of Sarawak’s population.

Plans for up to a dozen vast hydro-electric dams in Sarawak have raised alarm among indigenous groups and environmentalists who have spent decades campaigning against rampant logging and plantation activity.

According to the Financial Times, the plan involves the construction of several mega-dams and mining of large coal deposits.

However, development on this scale is also likely to displace some of the 608,000 indigenous peoples who live within the affected areas, generating International concern about the future of indigenous people.

The SCORE Plan

The Sarawak development corridor plan also includes proposals for at least four dams, substantial coal mining and a number of plants producing chemicals, aluminum, steel and glass.

According to the State Government, the 320km corridor covers 70,709 sq km, including 1.46bn tones of coal reserves, just under 41,000bn cu ft of natural gas, and the potential to generate up to 28,000MW of hydro-electric power.

“Sarawak Corridor of Corruption” and possible marginalization, alienation of more NCR lands and further destruction of environmental habitat

According to Bruno Manser Fond, it would be more appropriate to label the Sarawak Chief Minister’s favorite project the “Sarawak Corridor of Corruption”. Construction companies linked to the Chief Minister Taib Mahmud’s family interests will be among the main beneficiaries of the new energy development plans.

Baru Bian called the multi-billion Bakun Project as “Monument of Corruption”

Earlier last week, Sarawak opposition politician Baru Bian, Transparency International had labeled the as yet incomplete multi-billion dollar Bakun dam a “monument of corruption” and said he viewed the new dam plans as a “pretext for extinguishing native rights in the name of a public purpose.”

Bruno Manser Fonds asked Torstein Dale Siøtveit to step down

Bruno Manser Fond has wrote a letter asking the Sarawak Energy’s Norwegian CEO Torstein Dale Sjøtveit asked to step down over his role in the controversial plans.

The large-scale energy plans will be implemented by state-owned power producer Sarawak Energy that has recently appointed Norwegian national Torstein Dale Siøtveit as its CEO.

Siøtveit, who will be paid an annual salary of US$ 1.2 million, has come under fire in the Norwegian media for his controversial role in the Borneo dam projects.

The Bruno Manser Fund asks Mr. Siøtveit to step down as his position is incompatible with being a responsible citizen.

State politics of development. `Thick Pockets` are most important.

    All Readers,

So now what else’s do you people wants? If SCORE is too big and too complicated for the Dayaks why not try “Empurau Breeding”

Dayaks Paramount Chief is now creating money making venture for our Dayaks farmers. With initiative from his ministry we can now venture into lucrative “Empurau” breeding business. Today “Ikan Empurau” sell up to RM400.00 per kg while a kg dish serve at ant top-notched restaurant could well go with RM1000.00 tag.

Those supporting the “Empurau” breeding project and also those pro-BN farmers will be given subsidy to the tune RM50,000 plus free fries.

The Bruno Manser Fond will not benefit and enrich the Dayaks. This fond to conserve the orang utan and forest because in the west they don’t have anymore and demanding us to stay primitive. Why not ask the west gomen to plant more trees and demolish the concrete buildings and create their own forest. I don’t understand this BB talking about Sarawak are being colonised by Malaya under UMNO while strange enough they don’t see associating with the PKR is not another Malaya base political party. Is this not another form of colonial master as they presume. What a joke.
The move by the Gomen to build more Dam to get cheap energy is to be supported. As our JJM had said the oil and gas will soon depleted but not water unless God refuse to send rain and which is not likely in a tropical country like us. You see how smart is our Dayaks YB’s when it comes to look after the peoples needs. Those affected will be resettled and provided with proper infrastructure and compensation. Afterall the new Dayaks generation does not like to live in the longhouse and practice native farming as they would rather move to the town. So the affected figure will not that much as said. Most DB here are town dwellers including the two doctors who always sees the negative picture through their small telescope.

Dayak Lama, stop talking about RM400/kg empurau. It’s beyond the reach of normal people like me, people who uses their own sweats to earn money.

    Please be practical.

On the other hand, I also do not think the 600,000 or so Dayaks will be displaced by SCORE. This analysis may not be right.

  6. lakkia on January 18th, 2010 11:01 am

Dayaklama – NOT EVEN ONE resettlement by the government has been successful. There are two examples : Batang Ai – without electricity, despite the dam generated electricity. The land title are mostly not issued and insufficient land allocated.

In the second instance – Sg. Asap from the Bakun dam. Resettlement are done in haphazard manner.

The State government do not have a Guideline / checklist even on how to go about doing resettlement.

Dayaklama as usual is talking without facts. He forgot that he is dealing with Raban Dayakbaru that are well inform an educated.

    ES Good morning to you kaban;

I am wondering where these displaced beings are going to be sheltered later on.Are they going to be ‘squatters’ then ?

Will they be able to enjoy the lucrative EMPURAU
    to celebrate their Gawai ?

  8. NativeBoy on January 18th, 2010 1:55 pm

we the new generations love our longhouse, the only reason we went out was due to very little job opportunity in Sarawak. Thats why. All resources have been sucked up by the white hair “Rajah”!

  9. Bujang Semalau on January 18th, 2010 2:02 pm

The Pm and the Cm have literally sold Sarawak to China. At whose expense? Of course us Sarawakians, natives and non natives alike. Building dams mean drowning trees and forests. Mining coal for industrial purposes mean pollution. Both contributes to global warming! The irony is, countries are talking about saving the world from global warming by planting more trees to absorb carbon and here we are propagating its destruction. Didn’t the Pm recently said that Malaysia will help reduce global warming? Now he is playing a different tune and dancing to the sound of $$$$$. The bottom line is, this exploitation of our natural resources will make us poorer! The chinese investors are laughing all the way to the bank because the Malaysian government is running the country like the way SALCRA is being managed! A political machine to serve self interests.

Hey, don’t play-play with China, my man. China is one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Today they invest USD11 billion in S’wak. Tomorrow you’ll be surprised to find modern china-towns way up Sg. Asap and other similar remote areas. Suddenly Mandrin is spoken in the ulu longhouses. Haiyoo! That will be the day when Dayak natives are seen playing “mah jhong” in the veranda of their long houses. Don’t forget that China is already overcrowded with its more than 2 billion population.

    Dear DB,

Malaysia and China had signed a deal on Monday, January 11, 2010 in Kuala Lumpur between the Malaysian Government and investment firm 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) and the China State Grid Corporation (SGCC) and was witnessed by the Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak and Sarawak Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud.

China’s leading power grid operator SGCC and Malaysian development fund 1MDB said they will establish massive energy projects worth US$ 11B in Sarawak, East Malaysia.

This US$11B will plan to invest only in Sarawak SCORE as known as 12 DAMs. The effected land are belong to Dayak, the business opportunities are advantage for Sarawak Chinese and Political advantage for Muslim.

No matter what’s in our mind, the investment to bring money in is good news PROVIDED that the MoU is always give an advantage for the local. It will bring a bad omen if the MoU will not coordinate align with the local benefits.

On this situation, the MoU creates by BN lead by Najib/Taib without a proper debate or discussion with the local is a big question and will bring a big disaster to Dayak. Secondly, the record of BN gomen lead by Taib to develop and protect the Dayak Right is miserably upset.

Dayak shall remember the issue of logging industry in Sarawak, NCR Land, Dayak Status, the word Allah, business opportunity, work opportunity, contract award and SSB/Petronas opportunity which are always not advantage to Dayak during the Taib reign.

On this basis, I hope SDNU and PR can do something, such as coordinate open debate on this matter and lay out the correct prospect of MoU toward Dayak dealing with China US$11B investing in SCORE or 12 DAMs affecting the Dayak valley.

At the time the Sarawak Chinese in a secret way to change the present Sarawak BN after BN lost 2/3 majority in KL and support the dual party system, Najib and Taib had created a genius plan with an appreciated time signed a deal US$11B investment with China.

This is a symbolic political motif to attract the Chinese voters in Sarawak concretely stick to BN especially for the next election.

I hope the Sarawak people particularly, the Chinese, do not make their adjust base on US$11B rather than our political system during this time.

    Dayak Lama,

Aku setuju enggau offshore boy. Nya realiti ke patut di peda bala kitai dayak. Sapa enggai diau di menua diri empu? Ba projek bakun tok(esp.), mayuh bala senior kitai dayak ke nyadi TALI BARUT perintah. Sida diguna perintah awak ke mujuk bala Penan, Kayan, Punan, Iban and etc.. pindah agai resettlement. Bisi ku ngelala dua tiga iku bala iban ke nyadi UKUI perintah. Mesti sida ransing, suap perintah ngena gaji beribu2. Elaun traveling sari beratus2. Ni enda pejam enchelak mata. Kada enda bisi gak bala DAYAK LAMA enggau orang deh?. Baka ba Padawan, Kuching, bala bidayuh dia asuh org pindah agai Bau tegal org ka ngaga BENGOH DAM. Ukai nya besai menua Bau. Sapa gaga?? CMS gak. Sida ke empu material kena ngaga dam nya. Malaysia sain MOU enggau China ukai tegal politik. Tang meh Malaysia nadai duit. Duit allocation SCORE udah abis di empa bala Taib & Konco2 ya. Lagipun, Taib beguai ka nemu ke 12 DAM nya. Kala ya agi idup. Ya ndai pengarap ke anak ya Sulaiman ka nampung pengawa ya. So, dini ya ulih bulih investment paling jampat?. = CHINA=.
Bagi aku, orang ke kena laban projek DAM tok mesri ngaga perjanjian enggau SESCO. Setiap pintu bilik ke kena projek tok patut bulih at least 10% royalti ari setiap unit kuasa karan ke pansut ari DAM ba kawASAN sida. Nya baru adil. Resettlement nya ka berapa rega?. Lagi ndai beri karan, ndai sumber ai beresi. Semina ke nyamai endur sida : 1. myebar ISLAM (mayuh g agai org ULU)
    2. Control kuasa mengundi

Bala orang pemesai patut ngiga cara kena menghalang sida ngaga DAM mayuh gik.
