We can't just nominate somebody from the 'Kaki Lima'or from the 'coffe shop' overnight ...it ridiculous.

The Dayak based political parties should organise mass rallies and speech to transform the mindset of our people the need to defend our mutual rights. Issues and matter about the Dayak community should be properly addressed or else our race will be banished from our own homeland and being colonised by the 'ORANG LAUT', 'GREEDY CINA'etc...right infront of our ucu, icit..

Restructure or reform all the Dayak parties and be unified under the name of "SARAWAK DAYAK UNION PARTY" We must be vocal and courageous enough to speak ...like LIM KIT SIANG, KARPAL. Where is our stand ...who is our patriot??
It's a guessing game....

So what more if our representative (YB) come to visit us. In our old saying “Indah udok diberi makai anang ka anak mensia” enti iya datai ngaggai rumah kitai. that’s a real spirit of Iban.

..................................................

BJ,

Yes the Ibans are comparatively known for their hospitality. Nobody would readily deny it. It is truly a good traditional practice of the Ibans. We are always quick to reciprocate for all the kind things rendered to us. The Ibans are willing to give beyond their means if it is to return one's generosity.

Unfortunately, nowadays the ever smart Iban YBs are more likely to exploit and abuse the poor Iban generosity for their political mileage. The are always willing to slaughter a pig or two for their visit, spending several days preparing for their coming. At the end, only a tiny token of MRPs promised to them. This is quite common nowadays.

YBs are our dogs. They are expected to voice out our predicaments and provide solutions thereon. They are to represent us in whatever the govt does and go against it when the govt decision is to aggravate the scenerio, or when it is unfair and unjust towards the Ibans. They are expected to concentrate all their efforts to really look after the welfare of their people, and those who have voted them into power.

But are our Iban YBs really doing this?. If they are our dogs, then do you think they have barked strong enough to be heard by their boss?. Are they just a bunch of domile domestic dogs without any hunting skills? The way they behave are no more than our loving pet dogs, asking for tender loving and some gentle strokes as a means of establish superficial rapport and fragile friendhip. They only know a little on how to request for assistance to assist the Ibans. They are quite good though in endlessly persuading the Ibans to vote for them, without giving the folks something concrete in return for the political favour.

Can we just ignore the YBs who could perform or those who have been observed to perform miserably? From now onward, can the Ibans just stop giving lost dogs any kind of foods? Can we just show less respect towards our YBs when they are performing not to our expectation? Kindly think to vote them out. Let others who could perform better become our real hunting dogs and get rid of those YBs who never open up their mouth to utter a few words.

Please show no mercy when they are seen to be mediacore.

This real spirit of the Ibans are not so applicable nowadays in so far as our YBs is concerned. Perhaps, it is not too selfish to claim that this sort of spirit should have been dead. It shall never be applied in welcoming our Iban YBs. They have actually manipulated the Iban generosity.

Let us all think of our Iban YBs as dogs amd not servants. AS dogs they are, vote them out when they are up to ecpectation.

Change we must.

Cheers...

I think the Dayak Iban are too hospitable,to everybody just like those in Skabai,Bintulu.Kaban Ibanabroad had commented that the longhouse folks just watched when the enforcement DEMOLISHED their long house.

I know that their YB, Dr. Stephen Rundy is an Assistant Minister now.It is not possible that he does not offer any help to the long house folks. Will they get any compensation or not ??
May be KL will hand out another RM500,000.00 aid.

So much has being said and opinions comes from all angels being contributed. For you Doc. I think the voters themselves are over pampered their YBs maybe out of their joy or too happy to be visited by the one they Love, for sure you will serve the best to the one you love , am I correct ? Now it up to the Lover to react, hopefully he doesn't take the opportunity, advantage (ngambi oleh )or turn the whole thing for his own interest and gain only.
I have said this in my earlier comment of over pampered to our YBs in this blog.
We can give them a little warm welcome coz he is Our representative the one we hope to voice our problems and needs.Represent us in DUN or Parliament. If everyone of us to go to DUN or Parliament to speak for ourselves then there will be no place in the DUN or Parliament.
from what I have read above I think all of you can be the people representatives why don't give it a try in the next election not only Doc.
Do you all remember if you are pointing one figure at others but you are pointing four figures to yourself. hah for five years only?

our icon in the history of (Dayak )the longhouse people are the most Hospitality people in the land of the Hornbil. So what more if our representative (YB) come to visit us. In
our old saying "Indah udok diberi makai anang ka anak mensia" enti iya datai ngaggai rumah kitai. that's a real spirit of Iban.

to you all DL and gang & DB the good brilliant people and sweet candidates for the coming election good luck hah...

Future studies, multiple intelligence....
My conscience is clear and I can forsee the causes and effects that our Dayak politicians had done. It's catastrophic, but who is to be blamed? Voters....no! They vote for BN beacuse they were being cheated (sweet-talk) and fell victims to money politics.

For the educated group like us, we might be conscious of the agenda of BN as well as the PKR. We have good judgement and reasoning, but our rural voters are quite othrodox in their thinking [mentality kelia) because of their poor academic standing. Our patriots need to discipline our voters, stand firm in our struggle, go for unification, reformation, renaissance..etcccc!! whatever. Revive MDC. Why Can't us!!!

Interesting cross-cultural observation.

For the British aristocrat and politicians, being called "Honorable", carries with it, a responsibility and sense of mission: that when they fail in that responsibility and mission, they would do the honorable thing - resign, and let others take the mantle.

The same can be said of the Japanese political and business leaders. The sense of accountability would force some to resign, and in some cases, commit hara kiri, when they fail to carry their responsibility.

The question that can be posed in the article is whether our present Dayak leaders at all levels, would have the same sense of honor and responsibility, toward their constituency ? Would they seriously look at themselves in the mirror, and ask if they had made any difference ? What really, have they done, to continue to carry the YB title ?

I think there has been so many posting on this subject, from many angle.

One aspect of this of course is our very own Dayak folks, in the constituency.Irrespective of who might be chosen as the representative of any given electoral constituency, the DB attitude expects the constituency to demand their rep to earn their right to keep their YB title.

It does not literally follow that the "honorable" YB should stoop down and sweep the streets. But at the very least, the YB should be honorable enough to produce his/her report card when visiting the longhouses, schools, functions ... and let people know what he/she had done - and plan to do.He must be held accountable to explain himself.

If he does not remember, one expect the constituency to remind him (that of course, is what most of us do here, from time to time).

However, as I wrote earlier - there is this cultural aspect of our Dayak heritage, that seem destine to kill this modern democratic concept of holding the leadership accountable.

As I see it, our Dayak community equate leadership with the "Big Man" persona. I think many bona fide Dayak knows this. There is often the bizarre tendency to admire leadership, for precisely those reasons that would make a modern Dayak, with some political science bend, want to puke. Our community would often attribute leadership to people who is obviously corrupt and has amassed massive wealth from dubious source !

Like many community whose ethics have not been fully developed/evolved, many of our Dayak community notion of leadership is Power. And Power is admired for itself, regardless of how it is exercised. And many would want to follow the beacon of Power, hoping to get a few debris of goodies for themselves ...(bisi "jalai" ngulih ke utai, wai !!) They would want to follow the Mafia Boss, where ever the killing would be made.

This is one (perhaps of many) virus within our community that need to be eradicated. The education system, and the church seem way too slow and ineffective. And the Dayak community has zero cultural milieu in the mass media, with which to impart modern value system through it (Wai FM is good for laughs only).

The Boss and Servant article may wake up some minds as it did in West Malaysia. But here, in Sarawak, the Dayaks and their leadership, may continue to want to follow the Mafia Boss, due to their cultural DNA - that they can't shake off. Even as I'm writing this, I'm thinking of ways to neutralise the cultural virus, but I'll save it for future post. For now, the question for they day, what would it take to change this Dayak mindset ?

It does not literally follow that the “honorable” YB should stoop down and sweep the streets. But at the very least, the YB should be honorable enough to produce his/her report card when visiting the longhouses, schools, functions … and let people know what he/she had done – and plan to do.He must be held accountable to explain himself.

If he does not remember, one expect the constituency to remind him (that of course, is what most of us do here, from time to time).

However, as I wrote earlier – there is this cultural aspect of our Dayak heritage, that seem destine to kill this modern democratic concept of holding the leadership accountable.

As I see it, our Dayak community equate leadership with the “Big Man” persona.

And many would want to follow the beacon of Power, hoping to get a few debris of goodies for themselves …(bisi “jalai” ngulih ke utai, wai !!) They would want to follow the Mafia Boss, where ever the killing would be made.

But here, in Sarawak, the Dayaks and their leadership, may continue to want to follow the Mafia Boss, due to their cultural DNA – that they can’t shake off. Even as I’m writing this, I’m thinking of ways to neutralise the cultural virus, but I’ll save it for future post. For now, the question for they day, what would it take to change this Dayak mindset ?

Sorry DB my post on this going astray into the other subject. Anyway let me repeat here that YB means Yang Berhormat and that was why they deserved to be respected. They are not the Yang Berhidmat, the servant according to DB. Or in Iban language Ti-Dipebasaka Datuk Sri..JJ or Encik JJ or in English The honourable Lord..JJ.
They can't never be the servant and that was the very reason they sometimes accorded with official protocol on their visit. When they go to the longhouse the Iban folks giving them the miring rituals or slaughtering of pig as show of gratitude. Got it DB?

Cikgu Iban,

What Telaga Kumang`s means, if people said that the Ministers are the servants of the voters they are not entitled to have government`s cars and drivers. Any person who is provided with a government`s car and driver is BOSS and not a servant who is only fit holding a broom.

Telaga Kumang on January 19th, 2010 1:29 pm

1.Why ministers/Yb given the privilage to contest in the GE but not voters?

2.Why ministers/Yb use SG car but not voters?
Why ministers/YB shulffer driven but not the voters?

..................................................

TK,
What do mean by these two words-SHULFFER and PREVILAGE? They do not make sense to me and perhaps Cina Cantung as well.

This tells us so much about your character. I am sorry to say, this kind of vocabulary is totally new to me. In fact, they do not exist!

Thus, only buR*T licking job creatures will know how to pust themselves forward by making use of
our YBs.

Cheers...

Does our memory span go beyond 5 years?

In the long house some dogs are ....well...very naughty or dumb. They nose around into the neighbor's kitchen. They got whacked several times with sticks and firewood. The latter has a more lethal effect if the blow lands on the 'batang hidung'

But why on earth does the dog keep on repeating the same stupid non-beneficial action, nosing into the same kitchen where you just got clubbed 5 minutes ago? The goodies are too tempting and the dog has a short memory.

Change we must!
