Malaysia – a democracy existing in name only

Dayakbaru:

I am not surprise that Tengku Razaleigh called Malaysia a democracy in name only. Before reaching such a conclusion Tengku would have enough evidence to support his statement. Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah (TRH) is a well known Malay intellectual and has participated in governing Malaysia and is still with the government. His statement should not be taken in a negative light but serve to remind us Malaysian of the truth today.

Oil producer are poor

Sabah, Sarawak, Trengganu, and Kelantan are poor despite being oil producers. The Federal government suck up so much money and wasted in in many failed projects. The money are lost through the government incompetencies in planning and executing projects and corrupted practices in awarding the contracts. Not enough allocation are given to infra-structure projects and much money are spent on “white elephants” and non productive government program eg 1 Malaysia today, the Monsoon Cup, .

Unequal Status given to Sabah and Sarawak

In Sabah and sarawak we felt being colonized by Malaya. This is as a result of imbalance intake – favoring one race into the Civil service, the islamization programme of sabah and sarawak, the systematic and systemic problems of illegal immigrant who are given real Mykad etc.

The distribution of Federal allocation is well below what is required by Sabah and Sarawak. The amount of oil royalty is too small. Today the oil is depleting fast and oil producers in the country will remain poor after the oil is gone.

Land in Sabah and Sarawak are taken by Malaya companies

So many 1st Board Companies in Malaya are taking up land development in Sabah and Sarawak and who are totally ignorant of the Dayak ADAT – where graveyard are bull dozed etc

Now Kelantan is facing oil royalty problems. Now the government tries to create chaos in the State of Malaya that has elected their Pakatan Rakyat government. I really wonder whether the government of Malaysia is serious in bringing progress to the country or are the government only interested to hold on to power using what ever mean, even if there is danger to bring the country into a state of emergency – as a result of public unrest and civil disorder.

Do we still vote for BN to strengthen our democracy or do we give Pakatan Rakyat the chance to bring us into a higher level of democratic practices?

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 8 — Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah (picture) called Malaysia a democracy which only existed in name only, and said that reforms could not be expected from the incumbents in power, in an apparent attack against Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN).

A democracy existing in name

“To modify Tunku’s words, we now have a democracy existing in name, but grievously compromised in substance, reality and fact,” Tengku Razaleigh said today when launching Ideas, a new think-tank set up to promote democratic ideals, at the Tunku Abdul Rahman Memorial today.

Razaleigh appeared to also single out Umno and former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in his remarks about the current political situation, and for the attacks against democratic institutions and the judiciary.

The founding ideals has been warped

He said original founding ideals laid down by Malaysia’s first Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman had been warped.

“We have left it to the deranged for too long …To expect change from the incumbents is to expect, in the Malay saying, the mice to repair the gourd…‘Bagai tikus baiki labu.’ ”

When Malaysia was founded ….

“Tunku Abdul Rahman was the founder of Malaysia…He brought together a Malaysia that had come together ‘through our own free will and desire in the true spirit of brotherhood and love of freedom’, in a union arrived at ‘by mutual consent by debate and discussion…through friendly argument and compromise,’ and ‘in the spirit of co-operation and concord’,” Razaleigh said in his speech at the launch of the new think tank set up and rooted in memory of the visionary late Kedah prince, fondly called Tunku.

“That basis has been replaced by something alien to it, his memory has been suppressed, and our history revised,” he added.

Malaysia today is totally different from what it should be

Razaleigh, more popularly known by his moniker Ku Li, bemoaned how the “founder” would not recognise today’s Malaysia because it has been replaced with the “cult of the great leader”.

“Tunku built up a system of good civil service in which ordinary citizens did not need to see so-and-so to get things done. This has been replaced by a domineering style of leadership in which what you get done depends on who you know.

We have cult of great leaders

“In place of the protection for ordinary citizens guaranteed by popular representation, rule of law and the checks and balances of independent institutions, we have the cult of the great leader,” said Razaleigh, who was a close friend of Tunku.

“It is no accident that the erasure of his memory has gone hand in hand with the erosion of our institutions,” he noted further.

Tunku did not found Malaysia alone -

Razaleigh pointed out that Tunku did not help Malaysia achieve independence alone but did it with “an entire class of individuals schooled in the culture and practice of parliamentary democracy.”

Besides that, The land with huge and great timbers that made some super richs landed its state in a dire condition. Many school children, including myself has no shoes but going to school and play football bare footed. I can’t get enough money to finance myself for education after form 5 as all my families mambers and related families earned less that a thousand those days. No one give a helping hand and anyone that called themselves minister has no way to be found. I broughty my hunting dog also could not sniff them as all the time may not be in the states.

Is it a curse that any country that has Oil has no money to finance its citizen and become poor ?

In order to get the “EHSAN” from the “ketuanan”, others need to “mengadap & sembah” them. Those who don’t want to ’sembah’ them will not get it.
I dont think we have such condition in 18/20 points agreement.

In bn, there is no democracy because the elected representatives must obey what the boss says. In pr, democracy is more mature – eg: other ybs can publicly give negative comment to CM of Penang, other members of pkr can give negative comments to DSAI, etc. But in Swak, i dont think YDK dare to give any negative comment to CM???

    Cheers,.
