The “Dayak” genocide by the Government
Written by: Dr. John Brian Anthony
Nothing much has changed with the life of the Dayak especially those that are living in the rural areas. The Government took away plenty of their nature heritage: forest logs, clean rivers, meats, building material, farm land, traditional herbal medicine etc but the Government has very little to give back to the Dayak.
The POVERTY TRAP
In its effort to develop the economic well being of Sarawak, the Government did not take serious consideration to the impact of natural resources extraction to the rural Dayak. The Penan ended having to starve as they are without food. How could that be – when the Penan live a very basic life of jungle gathering, hunting and limited farming. The land has provided them with everything and they do not have to do much to get their food from their surrounding and natural environment.
Those living in long house still struggle up river through dangerous rapids and long hours journey because there is no road. The timber company came to build timber roads and temporary bridges and this is the facilities that the Dayak are using now. Without the timber company the road will go bad and the bridge collapse.
Schools and education are as difficult to get in 2010 as in 1963 when Malaysia was formed. Talking about soft skill and knowledge society to rural Dayak is akin to talking about a journey to planet Jupiter.
What did the Government do?
The Government created plenty of development but on their term not basing on the need of the people. Is it really necessary to build a new Parliament House in Putra Jaya at the cost of RM$800 million. How about military tanks: 256 units for RM$8 billion and 3 support multi purpose military ship for RM$2.2 billion. Are these purchases and construction really necessary when incidences of poverty in Sarawak and Sabah are still very high.
Did the Government not understand “sustainable development” and its principles to enable every stakeholders in our country progress on a win-win situation? Maybe not – as corruption and self financial interest overtake the common good of the people that the Government should be serving.
Why are political leaders acting like demi-GOD and little dictator? Is that the way to enforce POVERTY mentality into the rural Dayak?
What basic amenities?
No clean drinking water, no MYKad, no land title, no road, no electricity, no food etc. Interesting to note that the Government can respond quickly to international disaster and with million of ringgit to give while the daily disaster of starvation, no proper medical care, high infant mortality rate are daily affair in Sabah and Sarawak.
What road?
In Malaya major roads are four to six lane. In Sarawak, the major trunk road serving the whole Sarawak is a one lane highway. With timber lorries, general cargo lorries carrying goods and are able to do 50-60km per hour speed, with many pot holes and uneven surface, Sarawak is more like a condemn country instead of a country that is bless with rich natural resources.
What fools?
The people of Sarawak voted for BN as the Government hoping that they can bring development and progress as promised in every election – it is coming at snail pace speed. The Government beg for more patient and understanding from the population. Every announcement made by the Federal Government of “to be” development in Sarawak is greeted with great expectation – only to fail almost in every instance.
What land ownership?
Do we need to beg for land to build our house and farm for our food from the Government? Do we need to kneel and bow our head till our forehead touches the floor and still we cannot get land title to start up a small holding farming to plant cash crop to finance our children future.
What law and policies?
Why are the laws and Government policies so restrictive of us Dayak to build a better life? The Government introduce law and policies that do not recognize Dayak natives rights. The Government design land development to benefit the investor and almost made a slave out of Dayak – forcing them to earn a daily wage of $8-12.00 ringgit per day.
What future?
There is no consideration for the late start and the disadvantage of the rural poor in securing educational placing today as oppose to 20 years ago. There is no quota given on the part of the Federal Government on the Dayak of Sarawak as very little opportunity is given to join the civil service.
Where is the business start up fund allocation for those Dayak who wanted to try their hand in business. New Economic Policy was introduced and there is no special vehicle for Dayak to benefit from the policy. Today, NEP is a night mare – a dream that is never to be.
The Government is talking about NEW ECONOMIC MODEL – for Dayak, the foundation in which to participate in the NEM is not only shaky but in most cases, non existence.
The Dayak are trap in the Poverty Trap – yet continue to support the current government.
Who has not kept the part of the bargain. The rural Dayak voted for BN but the Government has not rewarded them with long term development both the hard ware and more distance is the soft ware as define under the 10MP.
Is the MINOR RURAL PROJECT the key to which the Government choose to help the Dayak – with building materials: 6 planks, 4 zinc sheet, plastic mat, etc.
Conclusion
What has the current Government got to offer the Dayak?
Dayakbaru – you think over it and act on your thought.
Change WE Must. Are you going to accept that the Dayak would perish in Malaysian society without direction and contribution as per the Government designed?

Kitai Iban,
I think the Ibans by now must be observant enough to get to see the clearer picture of the Iban standard of living. To me, out lifestyle is getting bad to worst. we have not actually got to enjoy the real benefits from our independence through the formation of Malaysia.
In every aspect of life, we are not there. The number of the Ibans in any sectors is hardly anything to be pleased about. The more we look around us, the more uncomfortable we are with the presence of people from other ethnics who seem to have in complete control of certain profession.
Die lahh we Ibans unless we CHANGEfor the better.
Cheers…
Dr JBA….
I totally agree with your write-up.
However, the bottom line is…Sarawak had gladly given the authority to Malaya 47 years ago to rule Sarawak. So this is the result?

Dayak are made poor so others will remain in power forever?
Poverty has many causes, some of them are very basic. However, some causes of Dayak poverty are due to; helpless leadership, crap mentality, old box thinking, lack of awareness, disunity and divided ideologies, kapapas mentality and other social negatives.
Such basic causes are quite intractable and not easily eradicated; time factors and other implications. In most cases, the causes and effects of poverty interact, so that what makes people poor also creates conditions that keep them poor.
Primary factors that may lead to poverty include powerlessness, lack of representation and freedom, double standard and authoritarianism policies (an authoritarian government is one in which political power is concentrated in a leader or leaders and absolute race, elected and/or unelected or nominated; UMNO style, who possess exclusive, unaccountable, and arbitrary power), the unequal distribution of resources in economy and other social services, inability to meet high standards of living and costs of living, inadequate education and employment opportunities, environmental degradation, certain economic and demographic trends, and welfare incentives.
The future generation of Dayaks is already at stake. Why is this?
• Is it enough to blame poor Dayak for their own predicament?
• Have they been lazy, made poor decisions, and been solely responsible for their plight?
• What about their leaders and the government?
• Have they pursued policies that actually harm successful development?
Such causes of poverty and inequality are no doubt real. But deeper and more causes of poverty are often less discussed and/or being ignore specially on Dayak customary laws (ADAT), tradition and cultural practices including their Native rights, Native Court rights (indigenous people rights), NCR land rights and the many socio-economic issues, connectivity and accessibility.
Behind the increasing ‘interconnectedness’ promised by the government are mostly political decisions, policies, and practices.
These are typically influenced, driven, or formulated by the rich and powerful individuals and the majoritarian Putrajaya, totalitarian Petrajaya and absolute Ketuanan.
Others would also includes corporate-politico actors or political nominees who served in a big business conglomerates/corporations, institutions, and other influential people.
In the face of such enormous both regional and external influence, the Dayaks and their grassroots leaders are often powerless.
As a result, a few get wealthy if they comply to the needs and wants of their “masters” while the majority Dayak are left to struggle.
Inequality is everywhere
Most of humanity lives on just a few ringgits a day. Whether you live in the wealthiest nations in the world or the poorest, you will see high levels of inequality.
The poorest people will also have less access to health, education and other services. Problems of hunger, malnutrition and disease afflict the poorest in society.
The poor Dayak have been typically marginalized and sidelined from majoritarian society and have little representation or voice in public and political debates, making it even harder to escape poverty and participate the national economic mainstream activities/development.
By contrast the ‘Dayaklama mindset’, the wealthier you are, the more likely you are to benefit from economic or political policies. This got to be change.
Example; the amount the government spends on military and other enforcement bodies, financial bailouts and other areas that benefit the wealthy, compared to the amount spent to address the daily crisis of poverty and related problems are often staggering. Why?
The gap between the rich and the poor is high and widening
The causes are numerous, including a lack of individual responsibility, bad government policy, exploitation by people and businesses with power and influence, or some combination of these and other factors.
Today, many feel that high levels of inequality will affect social cohesion and lead to problems such as increasing crime and violence. Thus, inequality is often a measure of relative poverty and absolute power.
So what Dayak need to do next?
Ask no more: Vote For Change and Change We Must!!

How much that DB had contributed to their longhouse during the recent balik kampung other than telling those folks to vote out BN? What project had kicked up under DAP in Sibu thus far? Is there any development plan for the next 5 years or so under the new MP.
Salam 1Malaysia
Unggal Dayaklama,

When Najib became Deputy Prime Minister, he put himself in charge of Felda. He gave the lame excuse that his late father Tun Razak started Felda, he should continue the family tradition of looking after Felda. In fact if the late Tun Razak knows what Najib has done to Felda , Tun Razak will turn in his grave. The same goes for the former Chairman of Felda, Tan Sri Raja Alias. Tan Sri Raja Alias did a excellent job in looking after Felda. The real reason why a very busy Deputy Prime Minister wants to micro manage Felda is now very clear, he wanted to have access to the huge cash hoard of Felda. What took 40 long years to build up Najib destroyed it in 5 short years. If they can do it at Semenanjung, what do you think at Sarawak and Sabah soon??…
On another note, I just heard on NTV 7 news that the BN government is going to buy 3 special ships for our Navy costing RM 2.2 Billion! Just a few days ago Dato Idris Jala announced that if we do not watch out, we will be like Greece in 9 years time. If things are so bad how can the Government justify spending so much money to buy ships, Money that Dato Idris Jala says we do not have.
So it is very clear that the Pakatan Rakyat MUST take over the Federal Government in Putrajaya in the next General Election. This is our priority to save the country. If the Pakatan takes over in 20 years time it will be too late, the country will really be bankrupt. So fellow Malaysians open your eyes to see how this country is destroyed by the greedy and corrupt politicians from UMNO/BN. Kick them out of Putrajaya!Kick them out from Sarawak & Sabah… Register as a voter now!
So you think you have contributed something to the longhouse people, Dayak Lama?
Every single sen that you claim to come out from “Perintah” is rakyat’s money. Donate RM0.10 sen, but simpan dalam pocket RM0.90 – every one knows that, even you.
PR wants to change this – let us handle Rakyat’smoney. BN is proven corrupted. Bakun..Bakun..Repot Road… Repok Road.. Durin Bridge…Durin Bridge… Penrissen Prison…Penrissen Prison…
I challenge you, let all Timber Concessions be handled by Yayasan Sarawak instead of your YDK’s cronies.
Dayaklama…
Just wonder whether you are talking through your head or other than that. How can you ask DB/DAP to give project to Sarawak when it does not manage the resources/authority?
Who run the government now?
Penang under DAP give project but you don’t expect DAP to do the same in Sarawak. Where is your common sense Dayaklama?
Mupok aku kaban.
Actually ..what ever project given by goverement is not belong to BN or UMNO…
Bala Kaban.

Do you really wannna know what I have contributed during this Gawai Dayak?
I had spoken about the reality that the Ibans will have to face under the present BN government.
In most instances, I was quite domineering. I alos spoke about the importance of eduction to my people. Together with ny retired Uncle, we gave out a token sum to the students from our longhouse for scoring As in their subject. I had not seen such a brighter smile on their faces to have received the token from us.
It was heartening to reply with a gentle smile as well. Oh what a wonderful feeling to give away something for the improvement in the education of my fellow longhouse folks. It was such a joyous occasion, believe me.
Therefore, Unggal Dayaklama, I had not not only taken the opportunity to speak about the necessity to get rid of the Bn government bi=ut also other issues concerning most of the Ibans in Sarawak.
Cheers…

Marginalized, under-developed, social injustices are the main hindrance to our progress compared with other races in Malaysia. These are due to the lack of empathy or stubborness on our part and the dayak politicians too.
The Rakyat follow where their leaders are heading to and they are solely to be blamed for the misery and oppressions by the dominant race.
I xtremly agree that we dyak must change right now.we are the kingmaker (majority.)We need tothink outsidethebox. we have plentyful of drs.,educationists, politician nad smart people outthere. WE can make it outstanding.

Dr Brian, you are doing an excellent job. If 1000 DB followers can carry these messages to another 1000 illiterate Dayak in the Long houses, logic will tell us the number of people we can reach out weekly. Keep on, tell us the messages.

Bakani ka madah kerah kerah enda ngumbai diri paloi, paloi meh dipeda orang maioh orang banyak.
Gaing Abai,
I agree with you regarding what Dr.JBA wrote here. The difficult part is in the delivery. Some among us DBs have “cooking pots” and personal interests to consider and worry about e.g. their jobs, their children’s future plans (job and college applications),and what this government can do to them. You know very well that this is a vengeful government.
Remember: even within the same longhouse the “enemy” lurks. The walls have ears and eyes.
Thus, can we look forward to see some suicidal and “kamikaze” act and “martyrs” from amongst us DBs.!?…..”Ask yourself” one might say.
Unless there is an easier and effective way to deliver the message and convince these illiterate longhouse folks.
All DL Bloggers,
The opposition DAP/PR may have won the Bandar Sibu by-election with water-thin majority but the fact remained, in so far as Dayak/Iban voters are concerned they continue supporting and voting for BN candidate. I am pleased to inform that we managed to increase the number of Dayaks voters supporting BN by significant 3.78%. In 2008 general election only 77.2% of Dayaks voters went to BN compared to 80.74% last Sunday.
The Dayak spirit in Batang-Ai continued to be displayed among longhouse folks in Sibu outskirt. NCR land is no longer an issue and is irrelevant, contrary to a common believed among DB.
The support for BN among the Malays/Mealanau community also showed significant increased, from 80% in 2008 to 84.5% last Sunday.
For a record, out of the 110 longhouses in Sibu polling districts 106 follow DL while a miserable 4 longhouses follow DB. “Anang Ngelaban Perintah” slogan is echoed in every corner of Penasu, Penasau, Rantau Panjang, Aup and Bawang Assan and other Dayaks majority areas.
I have no slightest doubt that Dayaks voters will continue to be a vote-bank for BN come the state election …..Sarawak would continue to be“fixed deposit” for BN.
Salam 1Malaysia.
Amat ko nuan unggal PE…orang ke nyain Sarawak nyadi colony Malaya pan datai ari Kapit….kati deh udah bala kitai ba Kapit ka bekenya?…tat aja kaban…
Gaing Abai,
Just in case you are new to this blog, the write-up mentioned below tells us how vengeful the current state government is. Look a t the kind of threat that we have to face.
Some of us here has been subject to ISA threat for purportedly being seditious/malicious and so forth.
But we have to soldier on. Unggal gkm2020 says this sort of threat only exists in words. So let us face it. Be brave and courageous enough to tell the folks of what are always discussed in the alternative media.
During the recent GawaiDayak, I sure some of us had had a hectic time telling them of the apparent marginalisation of our Iban people.
If you care, please do your bit so that the minor delivery of your part could make a bigger total.

As per you request we are pleased to provide you with the IPs addresses of “Hantu-Net” or Net Demon who are very active and vocal in Dayakbaru (DB) blog. DL recommends that you blacklist all the Hantu Net:
1) Make sure that priorities be given to BN supporters when it comes to implementing longhouse development plan or projects. No longhouse loan should be given to DBs and their immediate families.
2) 1,500 scholarships worth Rm$1.24 billion – application are now open- please kindly ensures that all applications are properly screen by referring to the IPs address provided. DBs must not be made to enjoy both worlds.
