SNAP – is relevant again
Written by: Dr.John Brian Anthony
Kerubong Tekura NO MORE!
I remember in the last election those SNAP candidates were accused of using “kerubong tekura” – : empty tortoise shell because of its legal standing when contesting the last State election. It means SNAP is an empty party without hope.
MDC (Malaysian Dayak Congress) effort to get registered were denied by the Government at that point in time (2006) and a decision was made to be together with SNAP. In the last election, SNAP won a seat of DUN Engkilili. Instead of nurturing SNAP to become stronger and fight for Sarawak people’s issue Johnichol Rayong, the SNAP sole winner he decided to be come a BULL FROG. He is expected to be admitted to join BN/SUPP. It is a blessing for MDC /SNAP not to have a leader like Johnichol Rayong who only has a personal agenda to make himself rich.
Taib says SNAP can ask to join BN
Edwin Dundang and Stanley Jugol, SNAP President and Secretary General respectively says SNAP is with Pakatan Rakyat now. Taib say SNAP can rejoin BN subjected to component parties collective decision.
Suddenly, SNAP become relevant again. It is the oldest multi-racial party in Sarawak and SNAP has a colourful political history. SNAP has given “birth” to the deregistered PBDS and current SPDP. Even PRS leadership were mostly from SNAP. Many of the leadership of PKR Sarawak were previously from SNAP. Actually, PKR has many former SNAP members.
It is important that SNAP will move towards a new political era, an era of multi-racialism in Sarawak. It is the only local political party with a multi-racial face.
What is expected of SNAP?
In this blog, we have two opinions on SNAP. There are some Dayakbaru who wanted SNAP to die a natural death. Neverthless there are as many Dayakbaru who feels that SNAP must be made active again as it is the only Pakatan Rakyat component that is Sarawak based. PKR , DAP and PAS are Malaya party.
Many Sarawakian are not comfortable to be a member of PKR, DAP or PAS. In this instance now, SNAP is a very attractive alternative and a political platform that Sarawakian is most familiar with. SNAP understand Sarawak politics very well and without the threat of being de-registered it should be a party of choice for many young Dayak.
Here, the young Sarawakian must regroup again and think carefully of their vision and strategy to counted as a strong political player in Sarawak. SNAP needs money and most of all it needs supporters with Sarawak interest at heart.
SNAP Leadership
It is understandable that many of the current SNAP leaders has been with SNAP for a long time. Their loyalty to the party and personal principle has been tested and they come out on top.
SNAP will need to blend in young leaders to give the party the energy to carry out its activities while the old leaders provide the wisdom and reminders.
The first priority for SNAP would be to re-energize its branches and membership drive to get party supporters and workers together. Those who are not comfortable with being members of PKR, DAP and PAS will find a satisfying membership in SNAP. Of course SNAP will work towards revamping its political goals, organization and role to eventually become the back bone of Sarawak politics.
Membership with SNAP
Those of you who feel that you want to be part of the Pakatan Rakyat struggle but insist that we must have a Sarawak based party – this is a golden opportunity to be part of the Change WE Must.
Conclusion
There are certain personality in SNAP that has interfere with SNAP struggle and direction. It is the most appropriate time for SNAP to make new changes as this is its golden opportunity to rid itself of “musuh dalam selimut”.
Here we go again – a chance for us to make a change that will bring Sarawak and Dayak to a higher level of political and economic progress through changes in Government.

What does this mean to us Dayaks?
The genealogy is SNAP beget PBDS. PBDS beget PRS and SPDP. At its prime, SNAP was rivalled only by PBB – SNAP being Stephen Kalong and PBB being Rahman-Jugah Alliance.
SNAP was a James Wong flagship and Moggie struggled out and formed PBDS – with Dr. James and his fiery Dayakism speeches woke up communal loyalty. When PBDS ended acrimoniously and now decently buried, many Dayaks felt betrayed, especially so when Dr James became so different.
Many Dayaks lament nostalgically “If only PBDS can be revived….” No, PBDS cannot be revived, but the old grandfather is now a phoenix. SNAP has awoken.
The only party that can stand for the Dayaks is now SNAP – unless SNAP do a bull-frog too. That might not happen, as SNAP appeared too many times with PR. Except Taib’s warning – “I can play politics too,” must be taken seriously.
My points are:
• SNAP is authentically Sarawakian. No need to wear sirat or bajung burung – SNAP is Sarawak. It can easily identify itself with Sarawak issues. The leadership are all Dayaks. Its strength was the rural community, the Dayaks to be specific.
• SNAP will be the outlet for Dayak MPs and ADUNs whose lips have been sealed. For example, 5 term MPs not even considered a minister, whereas a young, 1 term MP become assistant Federal Minister. At state level, a young raw ciku has 5 portfolios, whereas seasoned ADUNs are just ADUNs. These dissatisfied MPs and ADUNs can join SNAP without remorse. The Dayaks can accept that easily.
• SNAP can attract non Dayaks as well. It has Chinese members before. It can open its doors to Malays as well. The reason is simple; disgruntled Sarawakians has an outlet to fight back against BN. Many ex-BN (like me) felt disillusioned and left politics for good. SNAP is offering a way.
Finally, change SNAP logo to either a phoenix or a rising sun, either one could be prophetically accurate. The grandfather is young again. (Someone called to say he is looking for his old membership card).
SNAP for Sarawak and Sarawakians.
Concerted effort by all Sarawakians of all races will ensure the revival of SNAP.
Agree with your point on Johnnichal who is now fronting for his mistress at SPDP in land and project grabbing.
He will do anything for money including lending you his name for bank credit facilities.
We will expose this bull frog nearer election time with documentary evidence including act of corruption by his consstruction company Cahya Singai Development and Construction Sdn Bhd
ES….Fully suppot your comments and hopefully it can get back our Sarawak’s right as enshrined in the 18/20 points agreement
Kaban Rentap…better give full support to SNAP as it can give us a chance to bring back that 18/20 points agreement.
As long as we are in BN…our 18/20 points agreement will be burry forever.

SNAP has the potential to garner support from rural Dayak better than PKR, IF the party can take advantage of its (re)registration to rebrand itself, in time for the upcoming State Election.
Time is of the essence, but more importantly, support from SNAP’s PR partner would be required if SNAP is to be revived.PKR could consider to conceit more seats to be contested by SNAP, to give chance to the party to revive and thereby to strengthen PR.
(It must be obvious, that even any successful membership drive by SNAP would still be contingent on it getting a fair allocation of ADUN seats by PR, for its revival to be sustained)
So SNAP chance to pull itself from its boostrap (and be a force that it once was) remains quite remote – and not likely to occur before the State Election.
Perhaps, this is how it should be. Slow, wait and see.
The ROS resolution of SNAP (de)registration saga, seems too convenient after almost 10 years. While Edwin Dundang, being a decent and god-fearing chap, can’t possibly be complicit with Taib to unsettle PR through SNAP, some of the leadership were openly calling for SNAP to be aligned with BN.It won’t be improbable and not without precedent, that Taib can easily strengthen the hands of these pro BN leaders, and by proxy – among SNAP diehards – to turn SNAP into a large bull-frogs of a political party, in the footstep of spineless Johnny Be Good.
I had said, at the outset that SNAP would have the potential to garner support for PR from rural areas better than PKR. But it won’t be enough for it to sell itself as being a local Sarawak party, in order to get that rural support.
SNAP will have to be the true voice of rural Dayak, without apologies – and in a way that would be specific and unconstrained by national-level political negotiation – that would, perhaps constrain PKR.
From my perspective, if SNAP wants to be seen to matter to rural Dayak, by definition – it will have to be communal, and the PR political partner must allow SNAP the space to be so, and to reconcile communal politics neatly into PR political framework for free speech. Perhaps SNAP would call that communal politics -”modernist Dayakism”. In line with its necessary role to be communal on behalf of rural Dayak, I would think in uncharacteristic for non-Dayak to want to champion its cause.
After the upcoming Sarawak State Election, I would certainly plan to pay more attention to SNAP politics. My simple condition for support is if the party would drop all pretense, and would speak without apology, for the oppressed rural poor.Their history, and Stephen, “Sarawak for Sarawakian” is all but history. They have to want to fill the political voice for rural Sarawak, that has remain muted, even to this day.
Kaban,
Supporters of SNAP during those years are now members of many parties, some are in BN while some are in the Opposition.I have a lot of worries about the timing that the ROS had given SNAP a new life.
The rejuvenation of SNAP will create confusion and ‘betrayals’ among PR supporters and that will be advantageous to BN.
Personally I have a question to ask everyone ,Why is SNAP given a new lease of LIFE now ????
tuju ia awakka gabungan PR berekak berebut deka engkah calon..
In Sibu By Election, PM Najib has said that Snap have always been part of Barisan Nasional. With that statement made in Sibu and SNAP being in Pakatan Rakyat fold, it is a foregone conclusion that ROS decision 8 years ago to deregister SNAP will be overturned by the Court of Appeal.
It is official now that SNAP is still a registered Poltical Party and this is certainly music to the ears of the Ibans and Dayak Community.
With the decision made by the Court of Appeal, the question now is will Sarawak Barisan Nasional reverse the decision to expel SNAP inview of the anticipated State Election.
More is anticipated from this and the controversy surrounding YB Johnnichal Rayong Nyipa.

You mean SNAP is relevant again?
1. Has it really fought for the Dayak issues lately, like it used to be?
2. Have Edwin and Stanley managed to recruit new members, esp the young Dayak voters and persuaded the Exs, to come back to revive the party?
3. Have its objectives been reviewed in order for it to be more acceptable to the Dayak?
4. People might have a feeling that the current leaders in SNAP ought to be changed with a more dynamic younger group of Dayak generation if it is to revive itself and be relevant again.
However, based on track records the party is much better option than the current Dayak based parties. In this context, it is still relevant for the Dayak.
And to those who would like to revive SNAP, just good luck. One thing for certain is that its candidate will receive my vote.
Cheers….
The chinese with the like of tycoon James Wong destroyed SNAP and we don’t want history to repeat itself..
For now stay put with PR struggle, if Pro-BN then SNAP will not gain he support of their ex-members.
Say “NO” to SNAP
Say No to any Dayak based party.
Say No to any Sarawak based party.
We should go for national party. Remember…when Malaysia has so many banks? Easily collapsed by recession. Not only bank, other small corporate also merged into one big organisation- size does matter for any competition and even love making women love big & longer cock!
Before accept SNAP, think for 5min….could we gather strength stronger than PBDS time (1992). PBDS had evrything- money & all the Dayak intelletuals and yet only managed to win 7 seats. Why….? simple because dayaks lost trust on dayak leaders after the massive cross over of MAJU elected reps to BN.
One betrayal (by Dayak Leaders whom they respect so much- baka nyembah Petara) is too bitter for the rural folks to swallow. Some dayaks had been victimised in one way or another when they joined PBDS opposed the then BN3. Do we expect our people make another sacrifice for the dayak leaders to fulfill their self-enrichment? Not easy my friends, it may take another 25 yrs to regain the trust of our folks to support Dayak based party…and I hope all of those going for natural dead.
I had been mentioned at least 10 times in this blog & other Iban portals- no matter how strong is the dayak based party, without good relationship with the federal govt (any ruling party- BN or PKR), sooner rather than later the dayak based party will be strangled by the Laut Malaya Colony- why not learn from PBS (Sabah)?
Just focus on one party….go for PKR! I think, supporting the two party system like in Australia & US is the best option for Dayaks.
Sarawak Update extract…….
President of SNAP, Edwin Dundang Bugak and Secretary General, Stanley Jugol both said loudly they would not go back to the fold of the Barisan Nasional when met this morning.
Edwin said for the past eight years, they have been struggling without any helping hand from the BN.
After they teamed up with the Pakatan Rakyat, they claimed that the struggle in PR is more for the people than anything.
“It is to champion the rights of the people and we want to be part of it,” he said.
Saying that SNAP was like a lonely single woman with many suitors, SNAP has the right to pick and choose.
“We choose the PR” he said.
Unak Semambu & Kaban DB.
I do agree with you,as I have said earlier the timing for the rejuvenation of SNAP is HIGHLY suspicious. Some body out there had wanted to create some CONFUSION and BETRAYALS among SNAP members and its loyal supporters. So be careful kaban !!!!
Even SNAP leaders themselves are politically divided. At this moment Pakatan Rakyat is our only vehicle powerful enough to topple BN.
Congratulations to SNAP. But do not get too excited. There must must be a lot of hidden agendas behind it….by the federal….think critically…..history may repeat itself…too sweet means it may end up very bitter…
Hai fellows, out there. SNAP’s new lease of life can indeed be interpreted in many ways. Especially as soon as the court pronounced it Taib Mahmud appeared as if to be in favour of it joining back the BN rank. He said “SNAP was never thrown out by BN”. When promoters of MDC or even PBDS wanted to, in the case of the former to have it registered as a political party after the demise of, and in the case of, the latter, to revive the same, or even when SNAP had so much prayed that it be not deregistered, ROS was obviously muted while it appeared seriourly at works to deny the wishes of those concerned groups. There were even no replies to queries by ROS. Now after PKR, DAP and PAS have in combined effort under Pekatan Rakyat Grouping have gained so much political inroad into old BN, even safe, constituencies in 5 States, Perak, Penang, Selangor, Kedah, and Kelantan (in Kelantan the gain by PAS was massive)during the pilehanraya in 2008, and after recently there were much talks about PR spreading to the State of Sarawak and might want to put up a strong common front or effort towards capturing the State Government of Sarawak, and/or at the very least, to reduce BN present absolute majority in the Dewan Undangan Negeri in the coming general election (expected soon), and which good performances could shore up PR overall perfomance by reducing the number of BN MPs elected in Sarawak in the coming Parliamentary Election thus brighten up the hope of capturing PutraJaya, all of a sudden SNAP is allowed to be alive again. And before that Party Cinta Malaysia was registered within days of their application was submitted. Seeing all these one cannot help but build the notion that all these scenarios are orchestrated: ROS is not independent in its decisions. Indeed it is easy to conclude that behind all these new obvious “friendliness to SNAP”, and the fact that Party Cinta Malaysia (was allowed) even did attend to arrival of Najib at Kuching airport after the declaration of 1Malaysia and the new so-called government roll call “People First, Perfomance Now” there are hidden agendas. What those agendas are can only be left to speculation for the time being. Although I would surmise it that these scenarios do play well with the scheme of things of the power that be i.e.”divide and rule”. Many parties, especially in the opposition side, will easily dividing/diluting the voters supporting the opposition, and ensuring a win for BN even on a minority votes, result of the split of the opposition votes.
Having said the above the relevance of SNAP is only having that meaning were it to go along with PR, agree on a one2one contest i.e. BN v PR. And for the PR as a body of multiple parties they must operate as one body. Where SNAP is given a seat to contest then no other PR component must be allowed there. And likewise in PAS, DAP, and PKR areas. And the best party to contest in a particular seat must be properly determined, and by consensus. Were SNAP to join BN it would be seen to be licking back its own spittum. That would also be very sad considering what BN peoples had spoken of the party in those years that it survived by the order of court. Maybe too its appropriate time now for SNAP to be vegilant in its recruitment of members, and candidates for the coming elections. The experiences of the Maju group before in the ’80s and that of the present PKR and DAP in Semananjung (members and YBs crossing over to BN after elected)shouild serve as a guide in picking candidates. Of course it is to be admitted no matter how careful the selection be when the temptation is too great and plus own problems as a wakil rakyat are (normally) mounting, the very evils to be denied would still surface and be at play. Unless PR can form the federal government. The problem is our Sarawak politics are too much controlled. And the people are too poor to be able to make better judgment. Oftentimes which way to votes for people in rural areas are guided by villages’ chiefs and the promises of MRP. Sad but true this!
The basic premise is this. PRS, SPDP, PCM will merge under the SNAP umbrella. But it is better to have, 4 main component factions than to have one umbrella organisation. In any case, those many MPs standing for PRS, SPDP and even PCM are in fact PBB nominees. The multiplier effect is 4 times with PBB handlers at the centre and their sponsored client MPs operating at the periphery.
Nothing personal, purely political manouevre to consolidate PBB’s hold. The inverse of that is at the drop of a banana, the MP’s in the other minor components will challenge for the leadership of those individual parties soon enough, and at maturity, will convert those 4 entities into PBB clones, moving and merging with chinese support wherever possible.
SUPP is already punchdrunk and the Sibu loss is a vote of no Confidence for George Chan. The Kuching vote is of no confidence in George Chan, and the SUPP has finally splintered into the Miri faction.
PAU,Unak Semambu & Kaban Kaban,
I have made myself clear about the new lease of life for SNAP.I have my worries as I foresee the CONFUSION and the BETRAYALS among our DB members before the next state election.
Anyway I hope that my vision is wrong.
it would be better if SNAP oldguards like james wong and co/business-patrons of snap out of SNAP
dayaks shouldnt depend on nondayak businessmen patronage the party
look at spdp.too depending on thion
Unak Semambu on June 26th, 2010 8:58 am
Just focus on one party….go for PKR! I think, supporting the two party system like in Australia & US is the best option for Dayaks.
——
prefer 3rd force who has large influence like in uk now. conservatives unable to form majority gov w/out libdem sp labour
where the now the uk gov still depending on the local parties like scotland, ulsther to get laws passed
Whether if it is relevant or not but i am interested to go along with my friend in PAS for Sarawak. Let us go to the extreme.
The new Dayak generation, those interested in politic most probably not aware of what “SNAP PARTY” is about. Unless they read some book or the history of Sarawak politic, therefore, it is wisely the re-born SNAP party that used to be one of Dayak based party to lead by the new blood of Dayak professional and well educated. Keep the Dayak old leaders as advisor to pave the way for the better future of Dayak generation especially when we want to address dayak problems to any government of the day rather than through multi racial party likes PBB/SPDP/PRS/SUPP or even DAP/PKR.
We can not simply ignore any Dayak based party just because we want to be seen multi racial, in fact, there is nothing wrong with Dayak based party except those people who jealous of Dayak success and hate to see Dayak unity. PKR is MALAYA based party and lead by the MALAY OF MALAYA, of course PRR Sarawak is lead by Sarawakian/Dayaks but we ARE control by MALAYA based party, we can not afford to be colonized by different way to handle and split the Dayak which keep on happening and seems to be that we DAYAK can not have our own house instead of “MENUMPANG/NYANGKING” other people house, what a pity!
Yes, we have PRS AND SPDP claimed to be Dayak based party, both were founded by the split group from SNAP but failed to protect DAYAK interest especially in matters with regard to DAYAK LAND/DAYAK NCR/DAYAK RIGHT/, what do we expect from this PKR ? If there is no such agreement that PKR must prioritized Dayak problem and issues rather than any other matter immediately the moment they form the government. Otherwise, we are just like now, keep on barking and no body listening. PKR may say that they can not just focus on Dayak matters and neglect the rest, bare in mind, PKR is national party based in Malaya, majority member is Malay Malaya, so what is the different?
Think carefully, do not put Dayak in the situation “pansut ari mulut baya, tama mulut naga” / “Ka lari ka sungkup tetemu ka pendam”, and do not let the history repeat itself. Majority Dayak nowadays are educated, we should be able to analyze and strategize our own destiny rather that expecting people to be with us in order to progress, we must have our own strength, ability and power just like the old days when our ancestor become our legend now.
We should stop “Betuan ka orang Malaya”, that orang Malaya in PKR now are used to be the government/minister in BN before they joint/formed PKR, they know very well the problem that we are facing in Sarawak, because Taib has been there for more than 20 years long before the existence of PKR. Remember, the Malaya Land is getting smaller, opportunity is limited, all the three races (Melayu/cina/tambi) are compete aggressively among each other in all areas, that could be the reason Melayu Malaya by all means must protect and safe guard the “Hak keistemewaan orang Melayu”
The “orang Malaya” (Tambi/cina/Melayu) are keep on coming to Sarawak to conquer our land for the sake of integrity and business opportunity permitted by the Government of the day. Look at place likes Bintulu, Miri and Mukah, thousand of these people being taken the advantage of the policy made by the government at our front door and we the dayak become their “KULI” at our own home just the way they did to us when thousand of Dayak working in Malaya also “KULI” at their place.
Think carefully and look around you, what happen in Sarawak, where is our future, the Dayak/Iban, are we just limited to LAND DEVELOPMEN T ONLY??? Or just a workers because we are just good in that??
At this moment of time, most dayak are not that capable to compete with those “Malaya” even at our own home ground that is the main reason why we must have our own party, the party that is experienced and must be made locally.
Guys,
Please dont get carried away by the emotion. We dont have to be NOSTALGIC of SNAP for its “Sentimental Value”…We dont have to glorify their Glory Days in the past.Because it is just a history,it is so yesterday.
We should move forward to embrace the Future. We votes for the Future and not for the Past. That is what we should get it clear in our mind.
Now,talking about SNAP which has been “Re-Born”,what does that mean to us,the Dayaks? That we should answer first. With or without SNAP,we are still here, fighting agaisnt this Corrupt Government of Taib Mahmud.
Im still have a “Mixed” feelings and views with SNAP since it has been “Re-born”..Can it cope up with their missing steps before? Can it attract “Rebak Baru” to join them? Can they earn or have the credibility to lead us the Dayaks?
Bear in mind that they are still certain leaders in SNAP who is still very much a BN man at heart. This has been shown in Batang Ai and Sibu By Election recently.SNAP is in crucial period to get their house in order first before they can talk about “Re-branding,Re-brain,Re-vived and Re-juvenate”
For now,my support still goes to PKR,unless SNAP can show to me they are not just a ‘Senior” Mosquito Party in Sarawak.Sadly,we dont have any Sarawak based Opposition Party who has the credibility to shown to us or even lead us.
If in Sabah,SAPP would get my votes and support. They has shown enough sincerity and commitment to their struggle ever since they pulled out from BN. They are very clear and focused of their objectives & goals – political autonomy for Sabah. Though not easy for them, but over the year since ditching BN, they have made significant progress in convincing the people of Sabah to support them.
IF YOU BELIEVE:
A. If you believe in yourself; nothing is impossible.
B. If you believe in the spirit of “Agi Idup Agi Ngelaban” and/or “Begulai Sejalai Ngemansangka Bansa Dayak”; nothing is impossible.
C. If you believe in “Re-Born”, “Reformation”, “Reunited” and “Repent”; nothing is impossible.
D. If you believe in upholding our ‘Native Rights’ (including our NCR Land Rights and Native Court Rights) nothing is impossible.

F. If you believe in ‘Dayak Struggle for Justice, Equality, Equitability, Quotability and Progressiveness’, ‘Comradeship’, ‘Unity’ and/or ‘Esprit-de-coupship’; nothing is impossible.
G. If you believe in God; nothing is impossible.
BUT
A. If you’re not focus then everything is impossible.
B. If you are confused, disunited and with ‘kapapas mentality’/'enda ulih mentality’/'crab mentality’ then everything is impossible!
C. If your mindset say ‘can’t’ then everything is impossible.
D. If you believe in ‘internal fighting’, ‘lack of trust/faith’ and/or pursuing ‘blaming culture’ then NOTHING possible!
THEN WHAT YOU SHOULD DO?
Vote out any “Barisan Nasional” crony/conglomerate; its not the government – it’s just a Political Party. Don’t be naive – grow up. If that ‘political party’ is known to be corrupted then change it; make a better policy and law that really benefit the rakyat. Proof “Parti Rakyat Boleh”!
The power is in your hand – Your VOTE: Voices, Opinions, Terms and Expressions!
FOCUS: Vote out BN at all cause to protect and defend your native rights!
All political parties are the same but what is your ultimate “MISSION”?
Less talk, action today: MISSION – SECURED AND GOVERNED ALL CONSTITUENCIES FOR PR!!!!!
Remember nothing is impossible with God; just activate your faith;
* Delight yourself in God and He will give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4
* Have a vision for yourself because without vision the people perish. Proverbs 29:18
NOTES: If you were betrayed (47 years), the reality is so painful it feels almost impossible to face, and belief in yourself is shattered; just activate your faith to CHANGE WE MUST – CHANGE WE CAN – CHANGE IS POSSIBLE!!
Make it short simply support and vote for PR incoming state election all DB,Change We Must.Anang maioh runding, puas udah di tipu BE END
