Understanding Dayak hardship and our Dayak needs

The nature of hardship
Food:
In the good old days, food is the main reason why Dayak moved around and forward to new frontier in Sarawak. They constantly seek new fertile land for shifting cultivation for rice growing and also virgin jungle to provide them with fresh wild meat and rivers for the fishes.
The first nature of hardship was the journey to find fresh and suitable fertile farm land.
Building dwelling
Virgin jungle mean easy access to building materials like timber for building longhouses and boats, rotan for mat and various farming baskets and storage, bamboo for building of wall and floor materials and palm tree leaves as roof.
Longhouses were built for defense purposes and also to get enough man power to start a decent existence based on hunting and farming.
Income:
For needs of salt, clothes and other personal items, cash were generated by gathering of jungle produce for sale and barter trading
The hardship is focus on survival mode. There is no need for modern items like electrical items. A shotgun is a big necessity in order to get fresh meat easily. Outboard engine is a necessity to provide faster mean of transport using rivers.
2nd phase of hardship
New Needs
Education
Education promised new knowledge and new opportunities for Dayak as they got to understand the world better and thereby are able to adapt to new environment and development faster. With education come new needs.
Efficiency:
Motorized equipment like padi mill and chainsaws are not only community status items but are used to generate more income for the Dayak’s family. They started to improve their dwelling places to include modern specification of indoor toilet and generally better quality and finished of building materials used for their houses.
The radio and TV came in from Government effort. New sets are purchase, rubber matting for the floor, settees with cotton/rubber cushion and even new furniture for storage of clothing become status symbol. Then it is time to buy new comfortable bed with thick mattresses and sewing machines for the ladies.
Productivity
Rubber, pepper, cocoa and recently palm oil planting was introduced but in haphazard manner as part of the government effort to increase the income of the longhouse people.
Many young Dayak venture to town with limited knowledge and skill to offer their labour in construction industries, oil and gas while many take up menial work in coffeeshop and restaurant, including hotels.
When opportunities for menial job declining in their towns, the Dayak known for their “wandering and adventure” ways spread towards Malaya and landed themselves in Johore, Klang valley and some northern western state as Penang and Perak.
Poverty
Plantation job promised little income and working as unskilled workers in oil and gas industry are mostly a temporary measure. The migration into towns put new challenges to Dayak families to find rented homes but with little money resulting in the building of shanty shacks as living quarters.
At this point, poverty set in. Government refuse to provide amenities like water and electricity to squatter areas and also the long houses are also with modern amenities.
Logging has robbed the Dayak of meat, fishes and building material and the Government is slow at providing substitute and alternative to keep the Dayak going. Poor health becomes an issue with mortality rate being one of the highest in Malaysia.
Lack of good road retard the transportation of much needed farm chemicals like fertilizer, equipment, seedlings etc from town and agricultural produces unto the market. These checkmate the increased in rural incomes.
Way forward
Politics
This is where political power becomes important. It allows those in government leadership to come out with new laws and policies to help the rural poor. The modernization of farming methods and materials, the provision of new roads, the bringing up of a better standard and quality of life are the responsibilities of the Government. These are the important things and band –aid like Minor Rural Project are short term stop gap with very limited purposes.
This is the reason why Dayak politician must be competent, visionary, committed, good problem solvers and truly engage with the Dayak communities to find ways to move the Dayak into a higher lever of economic progress.
Government servant must not be involved in front line politics
The Government Department are delivery mechanism and executing implementation. Why should they be blame for poor development unless the Government Officers do not carry out their task of implementing, monitoring and giving feedback of progress to the elected government?
Why should the Government servant be involved in politics as politics are the scope of politician to gain and retain power while the government servant should be independent to carry out their job effectively? The government servant must do their work with their positive value system to include every citizen without bias towards race, religion and region. I say NO to government servant involvement into politics as that will bring chaos and inefficiency into the delivery of government projects and programmes.
Dayak NGO
These organization sustain the Dayak Agenda to be part of being truly Malaysian to progress in education, trade and commerce, culture and adats, technology and a unifying platform for Dayak to carry out their community activities in towns. It also provide a stepping stone to leadership – not limited to political leadership I must say.
DayakBaru
We must continue to identify and highlight Dayak hardship and even placed them according to priorities. We continue to argue it out to get to the root cause and where possible generate option that may be considered for implementation by the government of the day.
As such, our individual contribution to the discussion must remain focus and stay away from slander and name calling. In the end, if we over focus using our emotion on the negative thinking, we are an added burden to Dayak problem and hardship instead of a catalyst for change.
Change We Must and I apologize for making you bored with the preamble, but it is necessary. Have Dayak made progress, YES we have. We need to match the pace set by other Malaysian so that we would be in step with various developments in Malaysia.

In Noah’s day, the entire world had become morally bankrupt. Everyone lived for their own pleasure, not God’s. God couldn’t find anyone on earth interested in pleasing him, so he grieved and regretted making man. God became so disgust with the human race that he considered wiping it out. But there is one man that made God smile. The Bible says, “Noah was a pleasure to the Lord”. God said, “This guy brings me pleasure. He makes me smile”.

50 KM LONG DEBRIS STOPS BOATS ON RAJANG RIVER.

SIBU, Oct 8 — The Sarawak government will conduct a thorough investigation into the alarming situation where long stretches of debris floating on the Rajang River has rendered it inaccessible to all boats here today.
“We need to find out the causes, but if there are evidence to indicate that it is due to human factor, stern action will be taken against the perpetrators,” said State Minister of Environment and Public Health Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh.
The country’s longest river, the Rajang at 563km long from its source, was not navigable to all boats, big or small, from about noon, here, today.
The river was like a conveyor belt in a sawmill but instead of transporting uniformly cut wood, it carried an endless flow of uprooted trees, discarded logs and all manner of vegetative debris from Kapit, some 176km away. Kapit experienced an alarming situation from about 2pm yesterday.
Wong who watched the scene from the Kapit Express Boat Terminal, described the situation as a “natural calamity of gigantic proportion”. “I was told in Kapit yesterday that the debris was about 50km long.
“It is still continuing in Kapit today although happening in smaller portions and length,” he told reporters at the scene.
Wong said he had been told that there had been massive landslides in Putai and Nungun, which are logging concession areas in Balleh in the interiors of Kapit Divison due to heavy rain a few days ago.
But he said he was still waiting for detailed reports from the state Natural Resources and Environment Ministry.
Wong said the situation had never been seen or experienced here before and was rather scary.
“When the situation improves and there is a navigable path along the river, teams from the Public Works Department and Sarawak Rivers Board will check on the Durin and Lanang bridges to dislodge any debris that might have been trapped at their foundations in the river.
Meanwhile, express boats and other vessels leaving on afternoon trips to Kapit had to delay their trips.

Ba penemu aku maioh chara kena kitai Iban maju kelebih agi nengah jalai ekonomi enggau pengawa pelajar tinggi.
Ngambi ke banding bakatu;
chunto : diatu maioh kitai Iban betangkal ke getah… dalam sari bisi antara kitai ke nangkal getah tu tadi ulih ke pemerat antara 15-20 kilo sekali nurun… nya lebih kurang kira bulih lebih seratus ringgit sari.
Aku suah madah ke bala aku pasal ngaga tauka nanam sawit kediri empu ba tanah diri empu… anang ngira NCR ke enda… tanam aja.. tanda kitai beempu ke tanah nya.
Duit ke ulih kitai ari pengawa nangkal nya tadi tau dikena kitai meli anak sawit… tau beli pupuk baka tiap bulan meli 30 pun kini.. reti iya dlm setaun kitai udah bisi 360 pun sawit ke udah sedia ditanam ba tanah diri empu.
Bakanya mega pengawa ke bebeli ke racun serta baja.. tau beli pupuk ngena duit ke ulih kitai nangkal getah nya tadi.. pengawa ke betanam ke sawit kediri empu tu sigi enda senang tang enti kitai bisi pengering ati serta deka ngereja iya, nadai nya pedis digaga lalu dudi ari balat meri penguntung ke kitai empu… pengawa tu tau digaga baka kitai ke bumai betaun.. pupuk begadai-gadai, tau tanam berenggat-renggat nitih ke pemisi kitai.
Anang jugau jugau kitai Iban ke bisi tanah emperan, bukit tauka paya… anang takut nanam kediri, neh tanah paya ulih meh nyadi sawit nya asal digaga ke kitai parit besai serta dalam lebih kurang 2 meter penalam.

Aku empu maju kediri empu serta betanya ba bala kaban kebukai ke udah mujor ba pengawa tu… Diatu sawit aku udah mansut ke asil sepengudah ari mula betanam ba taun 2005 suba… Untung beresi dlm sebulan bisi kira RM4K udah tolak kena meli baja, racun enggau gaji org ke gawa enggau aku…
Nya meh cara aku ngidup kediri… lalu aku pecaya kitai bansa Iban/Dayak ke bukai ulih meh sama mansang sama maju dlm bidang ekonomi…
Enti kitai kelalu ngenang pengawa politik sigi tusah ga kitai laban ba penemu aku kitai Iban sigi tusah ka berubah/change kelebih agi bala ba rumah panjai… Maioh antara kitai udah dipejal bala sida YB ngena leka jako “anang ngelaban perintah”. Nya ngasoh bala tuai rumah, pengulu nyau takut serta bela ngemba bala rakyat diri empu. Nya meh gaya kitai Iban jam ke diatu..
Nya kebuah aku ngira semina kitai empu ke ulih nulong kitai empu, ukai org bukai ukai bala YB ukai ngarap ke duit MRP nya… Maioh bala kami sekaban udah sedar sereta betitih ke pangan diri maju ke pengawa betanam ke sawit diri empu… Aku selalu meri buah penemu ngagai sida serta sida pan bela nyukong pangan diri…
Ke diatu, aku benong nguji deka begaga ke rumah burung lelayang/walit… bc minta tulong ari bala kaban cina… aku udah melabur kira RM30K dikena begaga ke rumah burung nya… Udah nya mega aku bc ka JV ngau company betanam ke buah castor/minyak biodiesel ngena chara contract farming… Arap ke mujor meh…
