A Quiet Merdeka Day

In Sarawak, Merdeka Day is a very quiet affair. Hardly can you see cars and houses flying the Malaysian flag except for Government offices and houses of Government Officers. Interestingly enough, the Government Officers house is usually very big and expansive which common sense will tell you that with the salary that they received they will never be able to live in such big expansive houses unless they are “on the take”.
New sense of urgency in Sarawak
Many people in Sarawak sense the hopelessness of the current BN Government.The cost of living is rising up almost to the point of out of control. The subsidies that benefited the general population are withdrawn but those that favor big business is kept. Look at Proton, they sell expansive car to Malaysian and the prices of petrol continue to rise. The Government explained that with the subsidy withdrawn more money would be available to build better infra-structure. For Sarawak, the experience is different. We are not getting better infra-structure and the State Ministers are saying that the federal government has not approved fund for Sarawak to upgrade its roads.
Good oil prices
The price of oil is rising and and therefor Malaysia Petronas should be earning more money. But then where is the money? The Economic Transformational Plan is not taking off and MAS, MRT etc are all stuck in controversy. It seems the BN Government is not able to hold on to the trust that is given by the people.
Weak and Untrustworthy Government
We feel cheated because the Prime Minister did not do “real” thing but focus on “silly” scheme like “Klinik 1 Malaysia”, “1 Malaysia Shopping outlets” etc. This Prime Minister wanted to spent so much money by giving away bonuses which is not important. This act of giving bonuses is an act of getting popularity in order to win the election. But important thing like balancing the intake into civil service, investing in new technology, human capital, managing rising cost of living is not properly addressed.
. The Government play up racial and religious issues all with the objective of winning the election. In Sarawak we never felt so racially divided then today because of UMNO /BN politics. We Sarawakian felt so marginalize because the Malays from Malaya is taking our jobs. The racial policies take away our opportunities to get better education. The religious policies accused us of wrong doing by spreading the word of god. Even doing christian charity is accused of wrong doing by religious authority. Where is the appreciation of god”s good value?
The economic quota allocation is taken mostly by UMNO – who is the back bone of BN. The BN supporters of Sarawak think that they are progressive when infact they over indulged in “rent seeking” that is lobbying for Government business instead of actually expanding the economics cake of the country by opening new investment opportunities. Some are so proud of being able to indulged in corruption and abuse of power. BN Dayak politicians even think it is their rights to suppress other Dayak who do not share their political thinking.
Corruption
Corruption practices in Sarawak is so common. So many small officials are asking for money from the public who do business or have issues to resolved with the Government. The Prime Minister and the Chief minister of Sarawak is a poor model of integrity and uprightness.
With such weak, corrupt and uncaring leaders in the country how do we expect to enjoy our Merdeka Day celebration. In fact it feel so wrong to celebrate Merdeka Day because it means celebrating corruption, abuse of power, uncaring leadership and leaders who are not popular ie PM position and a Chief Minister that overstayed his welcome. Not surprsing in Sarawak 45% of the vote belong to opposition.
It is so wrong to feel proud of Malaysia in Sarawak when the Sarawak leaders continue to “beg” from UMNO for fund, the Dayak leaders do not represent the voices of the people that elected them by not speaking out in Parliament, the elected leaders that rob the land of the very people that elect them.
Conclusion
The BN leadership has a very sick mentality when they think that MRP will solve the people problems. in the last election the Government promised almost a billion amount of project in Sarawak but today they lamented that the Federal Government is not giving them money to carry out their promises.
The fabric of Dayak community leadership continued to be abused and lied to by the BN government. The meaning of Dayak community leaders has been watered down to act as the extended arm of politics instead of the community. The police are used to suppressed the people as in BERSIH instead of protecting the people from tyranny and bad leadership. Instead of protecting the people from physical abused the police inflicted such abuse to citizen who wanted to correct the wrong in the country.
In Sarawak some police allow themselves to be used by RICH investor to suppress the people instead of protecting the people from abuse. those that fought to protected their land are arrested while the people who garb the people’s land are protected. Having a document that says PL belong to the investors does not mean they have absolute right and due process should be made possible to happen rather then putting the land owners to police lock up and threaten with further action by certain police personnel.
No, we cannot enjoy and feel proud of Merdeka Day. We felt colonized and treated like 3rd class citizen. This is a bad day for Sarawakian.

Its a dull event, I’m fed-up with most of the current politician in BN. I’m lost for interest in celebrating the event and overshadowed by the Hari Raya Festival.
What a sad day for those Merdeka patriots like Kanang (SPGB]. The flag raising at homes,premises and vehicles does not potray the spirits of real Merdeka like before!!

Dayak race only comprises of a small majority in Malaysia, therefore we need to blend ourself with other political parties to gather strength and make our voice heard. We cant stand all alone in our struggle, its just that we need an opposition coalition to bulldoze the BN monopoly in Malaysian politics. Lets us not wasting our time, we need to thrust the momentum for CHANGE to happen very soon.
Of course we cant predict the outcomes yet but, let us be positive of the MOVE by Pakatan. WE HELP THEM AND THEY WILL HELP US INSTEAD. Its a give an take situation to enlighten the Dayak struggle in Sarawak Politics.Put aside all the differences, let us first be an ally with similar goals and principles in politics.

You need DML to remind u again that jemut walked out from dewan when DAP brought up NCR land issue? Iban ybs only puppets and their portfolios are window dressing. You can’t differentiate between form 5 iban like John s-Joseph M and doctrate jemut, degree holder entulu because they are both cowards & puppets.

Things will not change much unless Taib is removed. We Dayaks politicians will have little say in the DUN assembly. Their membership in BN is just to allow him to plunder and exploit the Dayaks further.
Quiting BN and join the opposition coalition is the only option left to put things in the right order. Jabu is handicapped and its your turn to decide on the destiny of the Dayak people JJM.

It’s only in recent years that I question the implication of Merdeka. Merdeka is “independence.” Are we really independent when:
1. 90% of Oil Wealth of the state is utilised in Malaya. The corporation pumping Sarawak oil is Petronas – how many Sarawakian Dayaks are employed at high-level posts in this national corporation? None. Not a single Dayak sits in its board of director or senior manager. Is this independence?
2. Religious freedom is the No-1 mark of independence. Why are bibles in Iban, Malay etc not freely available? (Notwithstanding Perkasa’s and Pembela’s call for Jihad against Christians).
3. Bumiputera’s poverty is almost exclusively made of Dayaks – almost 90%. Are Dayaks getting the real benefits of Merdeka?
4. Non-existence infrastructure in Sarawak and Sabah. Not a single road we can all “Higway.” (Buffalo’s Higways are plenty). What is 48 years of independence?
5. Civil Service – mentioned all the time, yet NO action from Putra Jaya – is this independence?
6. The land we build our homes, is it really ours? We farm and live there purely at the courtesy of the Local Legislative Council, or the ADUN. Can our ADUN do anything if and once land laws are changed? The “Land Minister” himself confessed he can’t do anything in term of “Conversion of Land Status.” Is this independence?
7. We can list more, maybe another 30 0r 50 more reason to ask if we are really independent.
What is sovereign INDEPENDENCE? It is the right to utilise our state wealth for the use of the state people on equitable basis. It is the right to determine our own destiny in term of land use, religion, and education. It is the right to work and earn on fair terms.

In 1963 I was in primary 6, I was very sad on Sept 16. I often argued with my classmates about Malaysia, but I was always outnumbered. So I always end with this parting shot….”I’d rather be colonised by the British than by the Laut.” I was not a very popular kid.
I still harbour the same thoughts in my later years. I always pray for a miracle, for someone among us to come and save us, someone very special.
I am still outnumbered and I am still praying!

He was followed by other fools – Abdul Razak, Hussein Onn, Mahathir Mohamad, Abdullah Badawi and the ‘beaniest’ of them all – Najib Razak!
Well, it is not and nothing can justify expensive shopping trips or diamond rings in a country where many still find it hard to make ends meet. Malaysia must be the only country in the world besides Zimbabwe where a top government official can remain in his job despite facing countless allegations which strike at the core of the man’s honesty.

Sarawakians wont bother much on the Merdeka celebration. They will not waste money to buy flags. The Dayaks are ignorant of what is happening around them, they prefer to lead a simple life….enggai kiroh!!!
When come to election their mind will just vote for the candidate who will give them food/drinks and vote buying. Not much change can be seen, unless another tide of political Tsunami during PBDS happens. So far, Taib is able to smile with simple majority. But of course more BN seats will fall to PR in the next GE…..my prediction!
16 SEPTEMBER 1963 = INDEPENDENCE OR COLONIZATION?
Many Dayaks are questioning here the meaning of independence in “Malaysia”.
This has arisen as they can see that most Sarawakian especially Dayaks have not benefited from being in “Malaysia” after 48 years.
Those who say they have no reason to celebrate “merdeka” are correct.
We have not got our independence yet. Someone was even more blunt when he said it is our “day of mourning”. How very true! It is the day we lost our independence to UMNO takeover and plunder!
Independence must be accompanied by improvements to our downtrodden and miserable life.
Instead we have been made more miserable and become victims and hostage to a rampaging white hair bandit!
Imagine Sarawak’s vast resources have been raped robbed and plundered until it has the doubtful honour of being one of the poorest “states”.
I would suggest the word “colony” is more accurate description and many bloggers have said so here

Empelesik Sungai has listed a number of features which are characteristics of a colony.
In the past Dayaks were rallied by the British under the Red Scare campaign and they were used as hunting dogs to fight the communists.
Now they have woken up to the fact that we were only fighting to secure British (oil) interests and UMNO colonization of Sarawak (and Sabah).
In the 1960s many Sarawak people wanted real independence and opposed Malaysia as a new colonization plan by Britain and Malaya.
16 September 1963 will always remind those Sarawak nationalists of their fight for independence which began and continued after 8th December 1962.
A few may wonder what is this date. On this date the anti-Malaysia armed uprising took place in Brunei and spread to Sarawak and Sabah. The objective was to liberate the 3 colonies and set up an independent democratic “North Kalimantan” state comprising Brunei Sabah and Sarawak.
After the British suppressed the uprising, the independence struggle continued with the guerrilla war in Sarawak jungles until 1990.
Many Dayaks are familiar with this struggle from the UMNO colonial army point of view.
Now after all these years Dayaks had plenty of time to re-assess what the fight all about. They must surely wonder what for? Who were they actually fighting and for what.
If they do not agree with the message of freedom fighters they can see the result of UMNO rule: total control and plunder of Sarawak and Sabah resources until both colonies have become totally impoverished.
So we are back to square one. The British left and were replaced by UMNO.
How can we get real independence?
The answer must rest with all Sarawakians especially Dayaks who are our warriors and must take the lead to fight for a better and more just Sarawak.
MAY I ADD THAT DAYAKS HAVE BEEN THE BIGGEST LOSERS WITH INDEPENDENCE IN MALAYSIA.
THEY LOST THEIR LAND TO LAND GRABBERS AND ALL THEIR VALUABLE TIMBER.
AFTER THE LAND WAS STRIPPED BARE OF TIMBER THEY WERE CONVERTED TO OIL PALM PLANTATIONS.
THEIR ANCESTRAL LAND HAVE BEEN DROWN IN DAMS BUILT TO RUN THE FACTORIES OF THE LAND GRABBERS BUT MANY DAYAKS STILL DON’T SEE THE “LIGHT”!
IN THE PAST WE WERE WARRIORS AND DID NOT TAKE ANY NONSENSE FROM THE INVADERS WHO CAME TO SEIZE OUR LAND.
