How much more humiliation PRS?

Written by: Dr. John Brian Anthony

Tan Sri Dr. James Masing must have gone through a lot with BN under Taib leadership in term of success and frustration. It is a long litany of events starting from Dr. James association with PBDS to PRS. Dr. James used to called RTM as Radio Taib Mahmud while he was still with PBDS and many more bad names. It goes to show that there is no permanent friends and enemies in politics. Everything will become relevant depending on the situation and needs.  But for DAP, you can trust that the party will NEVER work with UMNO or BN. DAP will stand by its principles and political ideology. In that way, DAP has been able to fight political, economics and social issues with great consistency and ferocity.

PRS Re-engineering

PRS existed because of Datuk Sng support in the beginning. For Datuk Sng it ended with him and his son being kicked out of PRS for reason that Dr. James wanted to be known as a Dayak rural base party. Will PRS grow bigger then it is now and therefor allow Dr. James to move upward in the political power hierarchy? I would think not because PRS YBs such as William Nyalau and Mesir Kujat are basically PBB men. These YB can turn against PRS anytime just like the SPDP 5.

PRS re-engineering can only be successful if Dr. James start to take the function of Minister of Land Development seriously. With rubber coming in, Tan Sri Jabu step quickly into the lime light which is clearly an opportunist move. Dr. James seem contented to limit himself with BIG land development and palm oil plantation activities. If PRS is to be rebranded as Dayak rural based party then Dr James should support initiatives to create small holding albeit Ministry of Agriculture existence. Otherwise, PRS will  not be relevant to rural dayak and also become sworn enemy of Dayak whose land has been rob by BN Government for plantation purposes.

A Ministry without budget allocation

Of course Dr. James say that opposition politician does not know how his Ministry work. He explained that it is important that agencies under the Ministry be given the budget and not the Ministry per se. So Dr. James is happy to have a $3million plus budget enough to cover staff salaries and allowance only. It also means that the Minister cannot implement new initiatives even if needed to. In this case, the Dayak cannot expect anything from Dr. James. The Dayak have to just go along with what there is today with little hope on sight with BN. If that is the case – how will Dayak progress under Dr. James Ministry??

That the leadership of Salcra is under Jabu while the responsibility is under Dr. James Ministry is something to think about. That is a poor deal for Dr. James because this arrangement do not allow those in PRS to participate in Salcra contracts or enjoy development allocation for Salcra under Land Development Ministry. Jabu call the shot while Dr James just bit his finger nail and could not help his PRS cronies. Very soon, the BN cronies according to BN culture will go away and look for new Minister to support in order to get contracts / business.

PRS is 2nd largest party with the least bite

By the number of both ADUN and MP seats PRS is the second largest party taking over from SUPP. But when you see how much share of important position either at cabinet or lower political position, SUPP emerged stronger than PRS. Dr. James do not seem to be able to influence the Chief Minister decision. If PRS cannot fight for their party interest how do you think PRS can fight for the rural Dayak interest.

Dr. James has every right to be disgusted with SCORE and JKR as the implementing agency of the Balleh Bridge for unreasonably delaying the project. Will the agencies be bothered with Dr. James concern? Maybe not because the decision on who should be the contractor is not for Dr. James to influence or decide. Taib will award the contract to his close cronies and Dr. James would have no say at all.

Conclusion

But then many Dayak leaders in BN are able to take the humiliation of being played around by Taib. Why? Taib is the reason for PRS survival and also the survival of the other YBs. You can clearly hear this reasoning from BN supporter when they said : “if PR win the election, they will also want the money and business”. To make money by all means is all BN party supporters and YBs can think of. It is BN culture and BN presume that PR will do the same. It is evident enough of BN way of thinking.

All these culture of using political position will never end under BN. This is the most difficult thing to change under BN. The only people who can decide for BN to stop such abuse of power and corruption are the voters. Let us come together in PRU 13 and help BN to stop this “politics for money” business by voting BN out!

We can make the change and Change WE Must. Jom UBAH.

An independent survey revealed that business leaders, politicians and government ministers were ranked in the bottom three occupations in the country in terms of trust and integrity. But doctors topped the ranking of the trust and integrity survey, with 72 per cent of respondents saying that doctors tell the truth.

I believe this survey. A simple example, let say an opposition politician will curse and criticise the government, but when he is in the government, whether his entry into the government is legal or bribed, he admires the government and its policies. I have a good politician friend in SUPP today. While he was in the opposition, he criticised the party and its leaders and BN leaders, but now he admires and praises them.

Anyway politics are as such, so the survey was correct when it said that politicians ranked lowest in trust.

Deka nyaut seleka dua jaku “spaohnet.”

DAP pride itself in shoestring campaign budget – DAP believe in principles and policies instead of offering cash for votes.

As far as Dayaks are concerned, buying and selling votes is the primary reason for Dayak’s poverty. Dayaks have prostituted themselves to the highest bidder. Issues of tract records and good governance are neglected.

This is the very reason why DCC committed itself to teach Dayaks on a clean and fair election. Whomever you elect is immaterial as long as you pick up representatives who are responsible and trustworthy.

If Dayaks can be bought by money, Dayaks can also be “sold” in their rights and opportunities. In fact, this is happening today and there is no reason why we need to perpetuate this. Please rise up above money politics, starting from you, to your family, friends and community.

    Accept reality, group tells CM
    Sarawak Tribune, 12 March 1987

KUALA LUMPUR – The group of 28 elected representatives of Bersatu yesterday welcomed Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir’s advice to the Chief Minister, Datuk Patinggi Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud, that the present crisis be handled within the bounds of the State constitution.

Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir was reported as having told the Chief Minister this on Tuesday when he met a delegation of Barisan Nasional leaders from the state at Seri Perdana.

The group also described as “unwise” the calling of a snap state election to solve the crisis.

A spokeman for the group, Dr James Masing of Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak (PBDS), said that “in the period of political turmoil, uncertainty and the emergence of polarisation in the state, there is no guarantee that issues detrimental to racial harmony and stability will not be brought forth during an election campaign”

Dr Masing said this in a statement issued at a hotel here which is the group’s temporary base in the city.

The statement was issued after one of its delegations met Umno Youth head Anwar Ibrahim.

Dr Masing said the group wanted to “get down to the business of the government without delay, for any further delay is bound to afffect the welfare of the people.”

He said that since 28 of the 48 state assemblymen had expressed their loss of confidence in Datuk Patinggi Taib, the Chief Minister was constitutionally bound to tender his resignation and allow the group to form a new government.

He reminded the Chief Minister of the meaning of Article 7-1 of the State constitution which states: If the Chief Minister ceases to command the confidence of a majority of the members of Dewan Undangan Negeri, then unless at his request the Yang di-Pertua Negeri dissolves the Dewan Undangan Negeri, the Chief Minister shall tender the resignation of the members of Majlis Mesyuarat Kerajaan Negeri.”

Datuk Taib and company must accept this because this is what the State constitution provides. The Chief Minister should not cling to power when he knows for certain that he has ceased to command the majority support in Council Negeri. If Datuk Taib truly cares for the people of Sarawak, then he must resign forthwith,” he said.

“Bersatu does not wish to wash dirty linen in public nor involve in mud-slinging because this will only bring about bitter recriminations and will not help to solve the problem. We want to get down to the business of government without delay for any further is bound to affect the welfare of the people.” he added.

He said Tun Rahman has denied an allegation that Tengku Razaleigh and himself are the prime movers in the move by Bersatu. “This allegation is part of Datuk Taib’s effort to pit Bersatu against the Prime Minister,” he added.

The Bersatu group and Tun Rahman fully support the leadership of the Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister, he said.

Masing pleads ‘not guilty’ over indigenous displacement ????????
    Malaysia Kini Mar 21, 2009

…Masing also defended the involvement of Cahaya Mata Sarawak (CMS), a company owned by family members of Chief Minister Taib Mahmud in the construction of the dams.

“That is very transparent. The international community can take a look at it… it is an open book for everyone to look,” he said.

…When Fuziah pointed out that there are numerous cases in which projects were given to companies linked to Taib without open tenders, Masing said: “I was not aware of it”.

…Fuziah replied by that the Similajau aluminum smelting plant was given to CMS while the construction of several bridges were awarded to Titanium Management Sdn Bhd, which Taib’s eldest son Mahmud Abu Bekir holds substantial interest in.

…Even with evidence presented before him, Masing maintained that these awards were given fairly and in accordance with the law.

“We have rules and laws… If there is a decision made by people who have vested interest, there are laws which does not allow it. It is illegal for people in authority to give authority with vested interest.

“All these things have been done through open tenders. They are transparent,” he said.

!!!!—->>>On whether there was “crony capitalism” going on in Sarawak, Masing replied in the negative because no one has been brought to book over such matters. “I don’t think so. If there is, those who deal in it would be dealt by the law. Until today, there is nothing. One must assume there is no cronyism as such,” he said.

    Masing believes Taib clean ??????
Borneo Post, June 23, 2011, Thursday

CENTRE OF MEDIA ATTENTION: Reporters crowd around a speaker in the Media Room as Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud delivers his personal statement regarding the investigation by the Swiss Federation into his alleged assets in Switzerland.

KUCHING: Land Development Minister Tan Sri Dr James Jemut Masing said he believed Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud is innocent of all the corruption allegations hurled at him.

The Baleh assemblyman also lauded Taib for being brave enough to tackle the issue head on yesterday.

He said this when asked to comment on Taib’s explanations to the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) yesterday that he does not own a Swiss bank account or assets and investments in Switzerland.

“It is very good for him (Taib) to tackle the issue straight on.

“That is what I expected a leader to do. As a politician you must not hide anything. If you have nothing to hide then go straight on because we are judged by public perception,” Masing said.

Masing added that he was “impressed and satisfied” with the Chief Minister’s answer and he eagerly awaits the Swiss authorities to respond.

“The onus of proof is from the other side,” Masing stressed.

Asked whether the public would be convinced of Taib’s innocence, Masing lamented that members of the public always make judgement based on emotion and not the law.

That, he added, represented one of the toughest obstacles which all politicians have to endure.

“We are not judged by the fine lines of the law. We are judged by allegations, half truths and lies.”

Meanwhile, Second Minister of Finance Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh said what Taib did yesterday was to make it known to the whole world that the graft allegations were unfair to him.

“Of course once the allegation is made and published in the press, not only the image of the Chief Minister but the state government of Sarawak may be tarnished,” he lamented.

Therefore, he added, it was important for Taib to make the statement in DUN to redeem himself and to clear his name.

“I think it is the right thing to do,” Soon Koh said.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister’s statement failed to impress PKR leaders.

State PKR liaison chief and Ba Kelalan assemblyman Baru Bian said it was “quite unfortunate” that Taib’s statement was not put up for debate.

He pointed out that there was no mention of whether the Chief Minister’s letter had been replied to and that PKR would be interested to know what Taib wrote and the reply, if any, to it.

“As it has been reported that this involves MACC, we hope that the whole investigation will continue on in spite of the explanations he (Taib) made in the Dewan…as it is only an explanation. If there is really truth in it, then of course it is of concern to the public at large, especially Sarawakians,” said Baru.

When asked whether the Chief Minister’s denial would help to assuage public concerns, Baru said he did not think so as there was nothing particularly significant about the statement.

“You need to have concrete facts and evidence and decisions made either by the Swiss President or authority of Switzerland, or even from MACC. The report we hear is about an ongoing kind of investigation, so as for now, we’ll leave it as it is.

“Unless they come up with a conclusion, it’s nothing that would wipe out any doubts or anything for that matter.”

27,902 Household Heads Under Hardcore Poor Category, 19,031 Total Dayaks or 68.2 % !!!!
    Bernama News, 23 June 2011

KUCHING — A total of 27,902 household heads (KIR) or 49.8 percent of 55,975 registered in e-Kasih system fall under the hardcore poor category, the State Assembly heard today.

Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Alfred Jabu said of the 55,975 registered until June 11, 23,235 were categorised as simple poor and 4,838 had exited poverty.

“Of 27,902 KIR under hardcore poor, 13,349 are Ibans (47.84%!!!!!), 5,601 Malays 2,925 Orang Ulu, 2,757 Bidayuh and 1,974 Melanaus (bumiputeras), 647 Chinese and 622 others,” he said when replying to Violet Yong (DAP-Pending). (19,031 total Dayaks or 68.2 %)

KIR with income of RM520 monthly fall under the hardcore poor category while those earning RM830 monthly are categorised as simple poor.

Jabu said to ensure effectiveness of e-Kasih, district poverty eradication focus group committees will vet applications to ensure that only those qualified were registered.

The data will be updated with entry from all aid agencies and those not registered with e-Kasih so that data on the low income group is comprehensive.

“The system is under construction and implementation is expected to be completed in 2012,” he said.

Jabu told Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi (BN-Pantai Damai) that 18,876 people were beneficiary of the Housing Assistance Program (PBR) including 10,847 new houses and 8,029 repaired houses.

A total of 1,877 KIR received assistance from the Rural and Regional Development Ministry.

Some 3,426 projects under the 1Azam Programme of the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry had also been implemented until May. — BERNAMA

Dayak will be forever submissive to Taip & BN Unless we make a change!

Jabu being DCM far too long but not given the CM post-This one way or another to deprive and humiliate the dayaks lots.

NCR lands belong to dayaks are confiscated by BN in order to humiliate the daysks.

Too little ministry power vested to masing also designed to humiliate the dayak but Masing has a Thick face & Black Heart. He just ignore it.
Note: refer to book by Chin-Ning Chu.

Dayak who squat on state lands will have their houses demolished -to humiliate the dayaks.TO the ruling BN dayaks are subhumans.

Party Rayaat Sarawak is maned by Masing just to appease the dayak-so what significant contribution has being made so far??? I don’t see any.Do you?

SCORE: According to this blue print Sarawak will be the richest state by 2030. Taip has to adjust his time frame because he had failed to make Sarawak richer by 2012- Yes always second chance.

Cunning man always on the move.He has billions of dollars stashed oversea so in order to recycle and make legal that money SCORE is the perfect place to invest the ill gotten money. Score is perfect place to cleanse the dirty dollars. It is a washing machine.

It is an open secret that almost all current Political leaders are corrupted lots. UMNO & BN culture of corruption is already entrenched in their blood. So when corruption is a culture, politician don’t feel guilty about it. It is a way of life because politic is about corruption that is why Iban rumah panjai said Politician fit in the bottom list(refer to his comment)

Dayak has gone through the ‘age of acquisitors’ and they were once upon a time an aggressive lot, that today they hold to their land that has been acquired by their ancestors in the land of Borneo. The land area under Dayak ownership was large and that was the envy of the others whose ancestors has no ambition to acquired much land;or in the case of the immigrants race they were restricted to own some land given by the Rajah Brookes to entice these imigirant to come to Sarawak.Though the land area that are owned by this particlar immigrant race, the chinese, are small they were given land title by the Brooke right away when they landed in Sarawak,as for the Foochow chinese in Sibu areas. The immigrant race has been put by the Brooke at a very strategic location and fort were built by the Rajah to protect them from Dayaks and natives, that otherwise would have own those land at strategic areas as we can see now.As the urban areas developed and towns expanded and their land are easily accessible these land become prime land and worth lots of money. From a newly arrival poor immigrant who barely survived their first year, the Rajah affirmative action has improved the lot from the beginning of their new life in Sarawak more than the Dayaks and the natives. The American Methodist missionaries in the person of T.J Hoover has also ensured their survival and progress, and,in his mind i would imagine that the backward Dayak were the Red Indian counterpart in America, and guide the immigrants and to accomplish their visions and dreams to one day become like the ‘White’ in America-extinguishing the Red Indian race and their rights,Dayaks become the Red Indians and the Chinese become their masters. The Rajah Brookes affirmative policy towards the immigrants has jump start their progress, chinese school was established by the hundreds all over Sarawak.Trade was of course in their hands too,the illiterate Dayaks were at their whims and fancy while selling or buying jungle products-the Dacin celap and Dacin angat taht are used to the great disadvantages to the illiterate ‘Lakia’ as they said!

Despite all the fast development of other races in all fields, the Dayak hold on to their only wealth, that is their land. The Dayak always value their land and they will fight and die defending their land against intruders and may killed the intruders. The Binatang Incidents in the 1920′s was proved it,as one of the earlier case of Dayak defending their land, and, this event led to the establishment of the Native Land Law during Brooke rule of Sarawak.

Back in China at that time was turmoil when the communist movement demanded a change in chinese society,to end Feudalism and the overthow of the rule of the landlord by the masses movement against the imperialist and capitalist;that certainly end the age of acquisitors in China for the while. Here at Dayak land in Sarawak, the Chinese towkays had their free hand, and corrupting the corrupt Sarawak Chief ministers they had come together hand in hand to become the greediest Acquisitors of every riches and wealth and land for themselves.Unfortunately the Dayak’s Age of Warriors was a bygone past, the Dayak were no longer warriors and has become cowards;they who were aggressive acquisitors themselves before were now the victims of a more clever modern Capitalist Acquisitors, armed by the rule of the said LAW-that has been designed to force the Dayak to lose their rights considerably. The politics of development is another tools that is being used to hoodwink the Dayak people to agree to let their land being use for 60 years on a 60:30:10 percentage ratio for the developer, the Dayak native NCR landowners and the Pelita ,the government agency.Though the ‘babas land’ now create some source of income, the amount that the NCR landowners received as their share was a paltry sum.

During ‘the age of warriors’ the Dayak has gained nothing, they never had an independent Dayak land and Dayak was always under the rule of this and that sultan or Rajah.During Rajah Brooke rule in Sarawak, the Dayak who were aligned to the rajah were pleased as if they had the licence to headhunting, and, killing another Dayak. At that time ‘the age of intellectual’ that was already happening in England and Europe was never heard of by Dayak. The only minister in the world who has not been to school is a Dayak minister of Federal Affairs from Sarawak.

So what can we expect now? What we Dayak can do? We will certainly gain victory in the pursuit of our destiny;we must NOT let any opportunity to be missed;and before we Dayak can see these many opportunities,Dayaks must review the past, see the weakness that burden our mentality and determined what had gone wrong and chart a course for the better future for all the downtrodden Sarawakians.

  8. Dayak Voice on February 17th, 2012 9:26 am

“Debolotment” that’s the word craved most by our Dayak leaders. Forget the some 2,000,000 other Dayaks as long as they can get:

    1. Timber land
    2. Kontrak supply sekolah
    3. Kontrak jambatan, roads.

PRS members knew since years ago that Taib has not been fair to Dayaks. But the blame is not on Taib. It’s the Dayak Leaders themselves that refuse to admit their dependence on Taib.

As a person, Taib has taken care of his family members, relatives, friends and political subordinates. In fact I salute Taib as I could do the same thing in his shoes.

But not the Dayak Leaders. For years, Dayak Leaders were and are given opportunities to help fellow Dayaks, but none were willing to lift even a little finger. If they help other Dayaks, those they help will be better or more powerful than them. This will deprive them of contracts etc from the government.

How many Dayak leaders are the beneficiaries of government contracts, timber land, etc? Just look at them getting millions and billions RM. But have they ever helped fellow Dayaks?

I know of one Very Senior Minister who even refused to call Yayasan Sarawak supporting a scholarship application. It’s not even his own personal money, yet he refused (after some sound counselling from his equally powerful wife). That is the character of our Dayak leaders. A student who becomes pandai is a potential rival. Dayak being kepapas, dengki, bodoh sombong is no better illustrated by our Dayak leaders.

PRS is a sorry story but I have no sympathy for them. PRS deserves that snub from Taib for its own arrogance. PRS snubs the Dayak Community.

Thus I am calling all PRS supporters to abandon PRS in support of PR candidates. We need to remove our Dayak leaders and teach them a big lesson.

So what can Dayak expect? What we Dayak can do?

During the Communist insurrection in Sarawak, the communist were mostly comprised of Chinese and the few natives and the famously known Ubong and family, a former Sarawak Rangers-who nearly become a mystic warrior, and the talk of the town especially the Iban population. The natives Dayaks and Iban were called upon on meagre salary to volunteer to join the Border Scout Force, and,as to their brave nature they joined in the defense of Sarawak from communist threat without much fuss. For many years they were stationed in remote and dangerous areas ensuring peace to the countryside and Sarawak as a whole.

Some were killed in skirmishes with the communist and forgotten. Some has become a good provider through resilience and discipline were able to sent their kids to higher learning, and, that some of their kids become lawyers and doctors and engineers. It is this sons and daughters of former Sarawak Rangers,Border Scout and Field Force of Dayak origin that the truly bigger hope of Dayak can be relied upon;knowing the sacrifices of their HERO parent and as their offspring they must carry the pedigree of their parent to fight for Dayak and Iban people.

But they were, the Border Scout,Sarawak Rangers and Field Force of Dayak and Iban were a forgotten lot! These species of BRAVE Dayak must be suppressed, their warrior genes is a danger to others in future, and, were best forgotten and no longer useful in a sense but a threat because of Dayak heroism and bravery.

What do these brave Dayak warrior get in return? Small thanks at best and nothing in particlar to show the government appreciation of their deadly sacrifices. The Communist, under the Sri Aman initiatives were peacefully welcome back to society by the government,of course. The communist were quarantined at many safe houses under the guard of these Border Scouts (ask any Border Scout who has not done this role),personnel days and nights! In the end when these communist troublemakers were determined to be safe they were release to the general population. They were given land of good value e.g Lambir Miri and some in Kuching areas has now become new township, now that land value is worth hundreds of thousand of ringgit,WHEREAS,the former Dayak Warriors were allowed to retire into their longhouse and rot-their GENES must not be allowed to prosper! The communist EVEN become ministers and legislator! What is all this nonsense treatment to the Dayak heroes and Heroine,if not humiliation and the Lakia status in time of peace!

Because of the humiliation towards the Dayak heroes and heroine, which is better for Dayak Dignity and Honour, rather than be known or called by the derogatory term such as Lakia-PEACE or WAR and CHAOS??? For the communist in Sarawak they create chaos to achieve their ends, and they go by the motto-’the end justified the means’ The communist surrendered, but what humiliation they suffered??? Nothing-after the communist’s surrender in sarawak, the pace of Chinese advancement progress at a much faster rate than ever before. They were able to BARGAIN with the government because of the chaos they have been willing to make. Now after the Sri Aman was signed by the communist and the government of Sarawak-Sarawak become the TREASURE PRICE of CHAOS for the Chinese Towkays and the ruling politicians especially comprised by Rahman Yakub and his relative and cronies and by his nephew successor till this very day! Chaos is benevolent to some people, while the general population were badly affected but when peace return it is as if nothing had happened-the Border scout the Sarawak Ranger and the Field Force traveled back to their longhouse as if nothing happened and satisfied they had done their duty to the leader of the country or state WITHOUT knowing that their sacrifices and contributions for the defense of the state against the state enemies is the highest dignity!!!

To ALL the successful children of Dayak Warriors, you are the special breeds with that GENES in you,AND are the right person to carry on with the dignity and integrity of your hero parent,to fight for Dayak people.

Heed this my Dayaks son and daughters of Dayak warriors, for we want no more Humiliation!!!!!!!(7 exclamaation as in our Iban biau or invocation)

  10. Dayaklama on February 17th, 2012 11:38 am

The one who can’t take “humiliation” is Dr John Brian himself that is why he jumps from one party to another (PBB-SNAP-PKR-DAP-……) and from one constituency to another; Kemena-to-Meluan-to-”……..”…Ha Ha Ha

Can he accept another “humiliation” in the near future if he lost via DAP banner?

Where are the Iban Warriors In Politics?
Voon Lee Shan blog Sunday, March 15, 2009

Iban people were traditionally brave people. They feared no one and were well known for their bravery. History told us that they also had good leaders, who were capable to enter into military alliances with one another and able to moblilize hundreds of followers under their direction for territorial expansion. For newly opened region or territory during their head hunting days, their tuai menoa allocated settlement areas to their followers and their young men who displayed courage in the battlefield were entitled to called bujang berani or “brave bachelor”. In the old days, they were truly warriors and they led and were never wanted to be led by other people. So, they fought against the Rajahs.

Their bravery helped young Malaysia grew to what it is today. Malaysia needed them in early years and in time of peace, they still served the nation well. Iban were good trackers and their service in the Royal Malaysian Rangers was exemplary and many were awarded with bravery awards for their prowess in fighting the insurgencies. Their display of bravery was consistent with their motto, “Agi Idup Agi Ngelaban”.

In Rangers, they also displayed not only exceptional courage, but, also exemplary leadership and discipline.

    Brookes Changed Iban Leadership

Things now changed. They no more led, but, were led by others through their leaders. Why and how could this happen?

One thing for sure about the iban people was that, the iban or dayaks in general were good, honest and obedient followers. The Brookes were smart and when they ruled Sarawak, they appointed Iban warriors as native chiefs. It was through these native chiefs that Brooke’s rule became more peaceful and Sarawak’s territory then expanded. The British who took over from Brookes also did the same thing and this strategy worked well to keep the iban in peace with the government. Iban people lived simple lives and were never demanding and it was their culture that taught them to respect and be obedient to their elders or tuai. In the longhouses, their tuai who headed their longhouses were called tuai rumah. These tuai rumah were powerful figures and they provided the link with the government.

The anakbiaks in the longhouses in return for their loyalty and obedience to their tuai rumah will get some subsides in terms of fertilizers, some granite for their roads which normally were distributed to them as “election installments”. That is, these subsidies will only normally be distributed when elections were around. However, the iban could not simply get these subsides unless their tuai rumah were obedient and loyal to the government. The BN government held them under political ransom and the present system will continue to make them so.

Therefore, until today the system of tuai rumah has been maintained and given the few hundred ringgits as monthly allowances, these tuai rumah had then been instrumental in controlling and influencing their anaknembiaks to be obedient and loyal to the government. With the exceptional loyalty as their trademark and embedded as a culture, the Barisan Nasional government has until now since independence ruled Sarawak through iban patronage. That also prolonged Pehin Sri Taib, a melanau and a muslim as the Chief Minister of Sarawak. With that, Taib may wish to perpetuate the melanau dynasty which began from his uncle Tun Rahman, in ruling Sarawak, by making his son, Sulaiman as the next chief minister.

    Kuala Lumpur followed Brookes

When Malaysia was formed in September 16, 1963, the federal government in Kuala Lumpur also followed Brooke. They knew, Apai Jugah was too influential among the Ibans and other dayaks. They respected and were loyal to Apai Jugah. So as not to rock the peace already established through Brookes’ rule, the federal government then appointed Apai Jugah as a Federal Minister. With Apai Jugah, the iban just continued to get some subsides. The iban together with the melanaus and malays in Malaysia were bumiputera, but, the iban until today could not enjoy what the malays could normally get.

Gone was Apai Jugah, the BN government perpetuates iban loyalty to the government by absorbing iban leaders and politicians into the government. These leaders were given posts and many perks and in order to enjoy these perks, they found it difficult to regroup under one political party to pull their strengths together to help their people. They have to help themselves first. They have to form as many political parties as possible so that they could become party presidents. This is because by becoming party presidents or holding important party positions, these leaders will then be in a position to get benefits for themselves and be appointed ministers by UNMO-run BN government.

The few leaders, like Jabu, Moggie, Masing, Mawan, Entulu, were said very rich. So, the the dayaks being led by others will continue through them. The iban never since Brookes’ days led, but, was led by others through their leaders. What the iban got until noalthough we are already independent from the clutches of foreign powers, were subsidies and not capitals for the development of the community. The present political strategy of UMNO-PBB will see the majority of the iban to continue to be poor. While their leaders lived in big towns and cities, could enjoy piped water and driving luxurious cars, with oil palm plantations from NCR lands giving them perpetuating income and wealth, the majority of the iban or dayaks will see themselves poor and to live without proper water and electricity supply.

In return for their wealth they got from their positions in the government, these iban leaders who presently are in the government will continue to be obligated to tell the iban people that only BN government could give the iban subsidies in the longhouses. This was of course true, but, the iban did not realize that the giving to them subsides will continue to make them poor. It would be different, if Pakatan Rakyat takes over the government. Instead of subsides, the iban will get capitals to start their lives.

The iban now has no political warriors who are capable to lead the community against the Barisan Nasional and against the dominance of the melanau-malays in Sarawak politics. Ningkan, an iban from Betong who was supported by many Chinese tycoons in his days was too aggressive. His display of the typical dayak arrogance and bravery was seen a threat by the federal government led by the malays from UMNO. Political manoeuvreing saw Ningkan being kicked out of his chief ministership. Ningkan who displayed exceptional political courage and leadership of an iban warrior, Agi Idup Agi Ngelaban, was seen a threat to UNMO rule through the BN government in Sarawak through melanau-malays. These melanau-malays were mostly muslims, but, is not a large group in the state.

Had Ningkan not been toppled, iban today would be under a better umbrella and could have enjoyed better lives. Maybe, it was and still is the policy of federal government to see that iban should not become the governor and chief minister of Sarawak and should continue to be led and not to lead by other races. This was made more difficult in recent years after the amendment to the State Constitution because, it seems that to be a governor, the governor must be a muslim and in the case of iban, this would be something almost impossible as most ibans are Christians. Due to the amendment to the State Constitution, the iban, like the Chinese, would also find themselves difficult to become Speakers of the Dewan Undangan Negeri.

    Iban Must Change

DAP and PKR with some help from SNAP and STAR are here to change the iban lives, but, if Iban people refuses to change nothing much DAP and PKR could do. Iban leaders like, Jabu, Masing, Mawan, Sylvester Entri, Peter Nyarok and Francis Hardin, being senior iban politicians could bring better change to the iban community, but, it seems that they prefer to be led and not to lead. They should be the iban political warriors to take the lead to bring the iban and other dayaks to greater heights. They should realize that iban being the largest race in Sarawak should lead and not be led by the minorities.

Never, at anytime I heard them speaking against any of the policies put up by the government. They lacked political courage to speak against the evils of the government and when they saw Taib coming to the Dewan Undangan Negri, they all rushed towards him, trying to get Taib’s attention. Sometimes, I observed that when Taib saw them coming, Taib just shook their hands with them, but, with his face turning away looking at others around!

So if iban people want change, they should no more be dependent on their present leaders. Instead, they have to take the lead themselves, throw away their present leaders and change the government. The iban people have lost its grip in power and the only way to overcome this is to change the government.
So, the coming Batang Ai by-election will a testing ground for Iban Baru or New Iban. Whoever be fielded by the Opposition against the BN in Batang Ai, the iban people, please rise up to the occasion to support the candidate for a change. He is your Iban Baru!

Good luck, my dayak friends! DAP are with you!

Quest for Brooke-era fortress in Sarawak
By James Ritchie, Borneo Post 2001

BETONG: A much-fabled fortress on a mist-engulfed Bukit Sadok commanded the Iban heartland in Sri Aman Division in Sarawak. My mission was to trek over at least four peaks to reach the summit of Bukit Sadok, at one time the bastion of Iban nationalists who opposed the troops of the invading White Rajahs 140 years ago.

After three expeditions between 1857 and 1861, Charles Brooke and his army of several thousand finally captured Chief Rentap’s Fortress only to discover that the wily old chieftain and his band of 24 warriors had abandoned it.

Rentap “Earth Tremor” whose real name was Libau, was never captured. Even after his death, his remains were concealed until recently when the Iban chieftain was accorded a hero’s burial by the present Sarawak Government at Ulu Wuak in the Julau district.

Fascinated by his heroics, I decided to revisit the Rentap trail. It took “Rajah Muda” Charles eight days to trek from Nanga Tiga to the peak of Bukit Sadok. Charles finally captured the fortress on October 28, 1861.
During the ascent of Bukit Sadok, the saga of Rentap’s valour and his fortifications unravelled as two descendants of his band of warriors —”Tuai Rumah” (headman) Kanyan anak Jiram, 38, and Linggi anak Lamat, 47 from Rumah Jambu Kerampak — guided me on a sojourn through time.

After the five-hour journey from Kuching to Betong and Nanga Tiga, our four-wheel-drive vehicle finally lurched to a halt at the foot of Rumah
Jambu-Kerampak. It’s the last longhouse before the steep ascent.

It was a cold and windy night as the village folk gathered at Kanyan’s “bilek” to reminisce about Rentap and swap tales about ascending the Sadok.

I rouse from sleep at 2 a.m. Strong winds howled all around. Armed with a torch light, I head for the toilet in front of the longhouse and return to the couch where Kanyan has put me up for the night. At 5 a.m. I wake up a second time. There is a sense of excitement and I look out from Kanyan’s back room and see the outline of Bukit Sadok rising majestically on what was to be a clear day.

We set off at 6 a.m. I knew it was to be an arduous climb but looked forward to it, very much like ten years ago when I first scaled the 7,950-foot Gunung Murud, the highest in Sarawak. I wondered if there would be a tantalising story at the end of it.

Kanyan and Linggi dressed in their longs. I followed suit, because part of the trail would meander through thick undergrowth. It was a bright day as we pass the pepper gardens of the villagers of Rumah Jambu-Kerampak. I am told that last year alone, the villagers sold some RM18 million worth of pepper products, making them a quite well-to-do community.

Unlike the days of the Rajahs when Ibans were relegated to the roles of “soldiers, porters and labourers”, the Iban farmers of the Ulu Layar region have the Government to thank. Kanyan said their longhouse is fitted with a RM300,000 solar power set donated by Betong MP Douglas Uggah several years ago.

As we leave the village, Bukit Sadok peeks out behind the mountain range. Thirty minutes into the initial trek we spy our first hill and
checkpoint—Bukit Batikal. Along the way we pass rolling slopes and valleys covered with hill paddy which the Ibans have cultivated for two centuries — long before the arrival of the White Rajahs. Charles Brooke on his expedition to Sadok noted in 1858: “The hills had just been burnt clear of every leaf for farming and the paddy in some of the places was already planted.”

The sun rose as we enter the dewy forests. Strong winds gusted. “Ribut (storm),” exclaimed Linggi who is pleased that it shall be a cool and
    comfortable trek.

Thick undergrowth had camouflaged the track which had not been trodden for at least seven months. I noticed many freshly-dug holes on the pathway and asked if these were made by wild boar. “Jugam (honey bears)..there are many in the area,” said Kanyan, reminding me that the bears are probably the most ferocious animals in the Borneon forests. Female honey bears (also called Sun bears) with six-inch claws have been known to maul trespassers who approached the cubs. Earlier in the day Kanyan said that it would take about two hours to reach the peak. However, an hour after leaving Rumah Jambu-Kerampak, we had only reached the second hill, Bukit Sanggau. Bukit Sanggau is also known as Bukit “Tanam Tunsang” or “Upside Down Hill” because nearly everyone taking this slippery route ends up on the seat of his pants.

The next peak we must scale is Bukit Tugong. Here we pass through “Tongkat Ali” (supposedly a powerful aphrodisiac) country; the plants grow wild and is plentiful. Linggi says that we must observe the “adat” (law) while passing this area. Everyone needs to toss a stick or piece of wood on three piles of branches. If not, the visitors will come down with a severe headache and have shivering spells.

By now we have manoeuvred past the steep slopes and are totally soaked by the dew and sweat. But Kanyan and Linggi, both standing no taller than five-foot-five, have no problems because they often help older folk up and down the hills in a “tambok” (basket). They would have helped me had I been unable to proceed further.

In his memoirs “Ten Years in Sarawak”, Charles Brooke describes what it was like for an outsider to scale the hill for the first time. “It was now fiery hot…one of our Europeans was completely exhausted; he had only lately arrived from England and was not yet inured to our broiling climate. On a good road in the old country he would doubtless have passed us, but now was so thoroughly “ikak” (exhausted) as to be obliged to be carried on the back of a Dayak.

“He was a man over six feet in height, and heavy in proportion. The Dayak who carried him up hill after hill, as if he was an infant, was only five feet two inches without shoes.”

The last hill before the final stretch along a narrow ridge is Bukit Rapu which is the beginning of the “Tatai” (Range) Sadok. By now, it is 9 a.m. We reached Genting Karak where one of Rentap’s loyal followers Nanang, the owner of the famous cannon named Bujang Timpang Berang (the One-armed One), had established his own “langkau” (farm hut).

“Nanang built his fortifications here because there is a stream nearby which was his source of water,” said Kanyan who is somewhat of a local authority on the legendary hero. Kanyan, who first scaled Bukit Sadok at the age of 12, narrated: “Over the years I have heard many stories about Rentap’s exploits and activities on the mountain from village elders including my father Jiram and maternal grandfather Igoh.”

Hanging from the rafters are some 30 skulls, some of which were believed to be prized heads taken during the White Rajah’s three expeditions to capture Rentap

Ten minutes from Genting Karak we reach Lempa’ Pinang, a spot where Rentap established his “langkau” because a second stream also provided a sufficient supply of water for him and his warriors. As we trek along the slippery and narrow ridge measuring between 12 and 14 feet towards Rentap’s eyrie I could imagine how treacherous the terrain could have been and how Charles and his brave warriors felt as they launched their assaults in vain.

In the failed 1858 Expedition Brooke described one particular incident.

“I rushed out of the stockade.. (towards Rentap’s Fortress)…and had not passed over meant to demoralise the enemy. “For example if one is injured by the bamboo spikes, he would be weakened and an easy target for Rentap’s men. If he did not retreat back in time, he would be finished off very quickly.”

Once inside, Brooke discovered that Rentap’s fortifications “proved to be a house within a very formidable stockade impervious to rifle shots, with almost perpendicular declivities on two sides of it” and to be almost impregnable.

Minutes later we reached the middle portion of the fort with a rocky outcrop called “Melaban Bedil”. This was where Rentap had stationed six “meriam” and “bedil” (cannons) including the “Bujang Timpang Berang”. It was here that Rentap’s men would take cover behind the rocks and fire their cannons at the Rajah’s forces.

Just before 10 am we reach the Sadok peak which rises to about 3,000 feet. Before us lay the vast Iban hinterland, the Saribas plains and the South China Sea. Even Brooke was amazed by the picture-perfect scenery. He wrote: “When the weather cleared we had a magnificent view of the country around, comprising many of the rivers as well as the sea; this is truly the grandfather as the natives call it, of the surrounding hills.”

It is from this “grandfather” of mountains that little streams cascaded down the range to form the Layar, Skrang and Tiput rivers. The return journey is more of a trudge as fatigue, the humidity and Bukit Tanam Tunsang took their toll. Back home, Kanyan announced his determination to improve the trail to the ridge. He also hopes to build a jungle hideout for visitors. “You would have noticed that I have marked the trees along the way with red paint. But if the trail is not maintained regularly it will be covered with undergrowth.

“As the authorities have not told me whether they are going to formally establish a trail to Bukit Sadok, I have decided to go ahead with my own plans and get the village folk involved in improving footpath and building our own jungle house. We want to make this famous hill accessible to outsiders and capitalise on the tourism business,” he said.

Backing the move is the State Government, with Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Alfred Jabu anak Numpang as the prime mover. A RM18 million road from Nanga Tiga to Bair in Ulu Layar is being built.

“Once the road is completed and tar-sealed the Ulu Layar region will be accessible to everyone allowing the people to enjoy the beautiful Iban outback. All of this is our country, our temuda and I have told my people not to wait too long but to take advantage of the natural heritage our ancestors have left behind for us.”

Reducing colonial troops to cannon fodder

ONE-ARM BANDIT…Rentap’s famous “one-armed” cannon named Bujang Timpang Berang which was used against the White Rajah’s troops. The left “trunnion” (arm) of the cannon is broken

SARAWAK’S most famous cannon nicknamed “Bujang Timpang Berang” lies, almost forlornly, like a forgotten piece of ordnance in front of the
    Betong district office.

Even though it stares menacingly at visitors, it is now a shadow of what it represented when turn-of-the-century chieftain Rentap used the cannon to fight the forces of the White Rajahs. Owned by one of Rentap’s generals “Pemanca” Nanang, the Bujang Timpang Berang or “One-armed One” was taken in a battle between Iban forces from Sarawak and the Malays of Sambas in the 1830s.

The three-inch M.L. Gun Dutch-manufactured cannon dated 1515 fell into the hands of villagers in Sambas, West Kalimantan during the Dutch rule.

However, in a famous skirmish between Iban fighters and some members of the Sambas royalty, Nanang managed to capture the gun, although the left trunnion (side arm) broke in the heat of the battle.

It was taken back to Sarawak, and Rentap used it as part of his armoury to defend the fortress at Bukit Sadok.

    Six-cannon Rentap

According to headman Kanyan anak Jiram, Rentap had six cannons stationed in the middle of his fortress at a spot called “Menalan Bedil”, with Bujang Timpang Berang as the centrepiece. Menalan Bedil or “Site of the Cannon clearing” is an interesting piece of artefact because part of the rocky outcrop is broken—possibly after being hit by the Rajah’s cannon shots with his equally formidable 12-pound gun (it had to be slung on a pole and hauled up Bukit Sadok by 60 men) named “Bujang Sadok” (the Sadok Bachelor).

In his book “Ten Years in Sarawak”, Charles Brooke states: “Our first shot went through their port holes and killed the principal man watching their guns (at Menalan Bedil); besides this, there were remains of three or four others killed, but Rentap had gone, and the sly old fox I fear, will get away among the holes and corners of this mountain.”

Not far from Menalan Bedil was Rentap’s “langkau” which was precariously perched on top of a precipice with a sheer 1,000 foot drop. Brooke said that if a landslip took place (and it rains incessantly in that part of the region) then “Rentap and his shell (langkau) must have gone to the bottom and been dashed to pieces.” Added a pensively sanguine Charles, “How a man and his family could have lived for so many years on such a spot is marvellous, and nought but a most determined spirit of resistance could have supported him in such discomfort and danger.”

After the Battle of Bukit Sadok the cannon was abandoned on the summit for at almost 70 years before is was retrieved and brought back to Betong by Brooke office G.R. H. Arundell and Penghulu Unji in 1928. The cannon was lashed to a sled and, held by ropes, slowly lowered down steep slopes to Betong.

“The Bujang Timpang Berang is part of the “Ensera” of the Iban and we take pride that it is part of out rich heritage,” said Kanyan. “But I am told that Rentap had an even larger cannon which was used against the Rajah.”

Kanyan said that the larger cannon which had to be carried by at least 12 men, sank into the river when the boat of the fleeing warriors of Rentap’ army sank. “I am told that the cannon sank somewhere in the foothills and has now been covered by rocks over the years. It will be difficult retrieving the cannon.”

Kanyan said that among the artefacts in the possession of his village are two cannon shots which were found at the foothills and 160 heads, some belonging to the Rajah’s warriors, which were taken over the last 200 years.

  16. Raban Dayak Consultative Council on February 20th, 2012 10:28 am

Dato’ Seri (Dr) Chua Soi Lek Vs Mr. Lim Guan Eng’s debate entitled: “Is a 2-party system becoming a 2-race system?”

This was part of the conference on “Malaysian Chinese at Political Crossroads” an event jointly organised by Asian Strategy & Leadership Institute (ASLI) and Insap, an MCA think tank.

Listening to the debate (live on Astro), we could hear both debaters mentioned issues once considered sensitive less than 10 years ago. For example, issue such as race, UMNO dominance, transparency in governance were subjects discussed behind closed doors. Even today, such issues may not be very comforting if raised in Sarawak. Race relation is non-issue here but public discussion on PBB dominance within the coalition and corruption in high places may result in serious reprisals.

Dr Chua attacked DAP, asserting the latter is planting hope to 6.5 million Malaysia Chinese that they could form a Chinese-led government. That statement from Dr Chua is fictitious as Dr Chua seems to forget that DAP is multiracial. In Sarawak itself, Dayaks form the majority of its members!

The debate may signal to us Sarawakians that the time of fear and intimidation is coming to an end. As Dayaks, we may start to think critically. For example:

    1. Has the Dayaks been given a fair deal under Malaysia?
    2. Bumiputera affirmative policy has not been fairly accorded to the Dayaks.
    3. Dayak cultural rights are slowly being undermined.
    4. Wealth distribution in Malaysia had overlooked the Dayaks of Sabah and Sarawak.
    5. Sabah and Sarawak wealth are used in Peninsula Malaysia: is this colonialism?

For 48 years, serious critical thinking was absent among the Dayaks. We are completely trusting in nature.

But whatever voices that surfaced lately are also silenced, because reprisals can be serious and extensive extending to the wife, children, father/mother and even relatives. Dayak community leaders who have issues behind closed doors may refuse to participate in dialogue or forum on the same issues. One Dayak community leader feared that his children’s admission for further studies could be jeopardised. Such is the nature of reprisals in Sarawak.

In Sabah, the Dayaks (Kadazans etc) are also asking the meaning of Malaysia. There are asking: where is Sabahan’s participation within Petronas? Petronas is not the only Government-financed institution that lack Dayaks’ participation. We are left out in all the GLCs, Bank Negara, Finance Ministry etc and even the Prime Minister Department itself. Why are we not asking the meaning of Malaysia to us? Reprisals, that’s why.

Let Dr Chua vs Mr Lim Guan Eng debate be an encouragement to us. The time of fear is over. We need to determine our future and the future of our nation into our hands.

  17. engkerawai on February 20th, 2012 1:16 pm

What about a Debate between Baru Bian and Jabu?
Let the rayat justify the real issues affecting the Dayaks. Taib will not dare to debate against Bian, he is not sincere, he dares to see the Dayaks ruined and weakened in politics of deception backed by UMNO.

    JBA,

I think what you should do is stop bad-mouth others (that is what this blog is all about) and start telling the voters what you can and will do if elected. That way we can judge you, if elected, whether you’re just an empty can or a can full of s#@* or a representative that is dependable and trustworthy.

  25. Dayak Voice on February 21st, 2012 9:35 am

Now Puzzleman, it’s your turn to be from a deep cave in Btg Kayan in Kalimantan.

It is reported in Utusan Borneo that PRS members were dissatisfied (the right word is “angry”) that despite having the most ADUNs after PBB, PRS’s Political Secretaries are lesser then SUPP’s.

    That is humiliation No. 1.

Humiliation No 2 is the absence of allocation in PRS’s President Ministry. Taib’s ministries control almost 50% of the budget allocation.

If these are not humiliation, that only confirms what we are saying all along – “Dayaks are treated as fools and Dayaks like it.”

Sadly, there are Dayaks like Puzzleman who enjoy being treated as fools.

Sorry that I said that Puzzleman, but I wish you stand together with me defending Sarawak from Malayan Colonial intrusion.

(Latest news: UMNO members are shareholders of a piece of land alienated to a plantation group within Rejang Basin).

When you do often talk negative about others it makes people particularly the voters very uncomfortable. It is also likely that they will wonder when you will be talking bad about them if they’re Dayak too?

If you feel you need to provide an ultimatum, present it respectfully with justify solutions and be prepared to follow through.

When your fake Petara the menteri get humiliated, very unfortunately, in return these same menteri humiliated almost all longhouses headmen and the anembiaks. The menteri as much as possible used DELAY tactic in implement the MRP so that the rayat always rally behind BN- waiting for the dream (to have all the basic amenities) to come thru.

The menteri know how to play the trick (of humiliation). In each election the menteri promised one MRP at a time though in certain circumstances they can do it at once and for all.

First election, the menteri made a promise (e.g road) but nothing happened.
Second election, the earth ceremony perhaps with one tractor on site but pulled back immediately after polling.

Third election, the menteri may ask the contractor to bring few trucks and tractor to make one or two kilometers of gravel road, same thing happened the road never completed. 15 years had gone the same longhouse dream to have road link never materialized.

The same tactic applied for 24hrs electricity, piped water and other basic infrastructure. That s why after about a century BN in power, hundreds of thousands rural folks still not getting the basic amenities. Govt obligation (to provide the basic amenities to all citizens irrespective of colour & creed) are abused by our menteri to fish for votes.

So, agi ga kitai ka dikemeli ke BN? Even when the govt provide these basic amenities the rayat still pay the bills, it s not free. Why couldn’t the govt just implement the mrp within specific time frame if not purposely humiliated the rural folks?

This PRU13, why can’t we humiliate our menteri thru the ballot box?

Like in the USA, the presidential candidates in their campaign always tell their people what they can and will do if elected. I am sure you also want to know what JBA will bring to the table because what we all want is results, not endless politiking and talk-only YB, please don’t act like a fool and think that you are the world most fearless homosapien, it makes you look more like a fool.

Dr John is the leader in DCC, DCC is part of DAP, DAP promised BILLIONs of FUND for Dayak to move forward in order to catch up with the MALAY or even the CHINESE. That is more than enough to promise if Dr John is elected. Unless, we have somebody else or PRS for that matter promise us the INDIVIDUAL LAND TITILE for every piece of land belongs to the Dayak including the PULAU GALAU, PEMAKAI MENOA, PALA MENOA & LILIH AI.

On top of that we would like to hear the true promise not just EMPTY GIANT CAN from BN that all Dayak longhouses MUST be provided with clean water, electricity, road besides more funds as compared to DCC/DAP has already been promised mainly for Dayak student scholarship, school facilities, and etc.

Another thing, the PAN BORNEO HIGHWAY, must be equally the same as those in MALAYA if not better. More University for Dayak/Sarawakian, Museum for Dayak and the JOB or BUSINESS should be more for Dayak/Sarawakian in Gas and petroleum industry,

    Puzzleman:

    1. The opposite of “fool” is not genius. Genius can be a fool too. The correct opposite is “wise.”

2.You can’t defend Dayak Land, Puzzleman. Lets see this headline that screams at us Dayaks. Why others can defend their land but not us Dayaks?
    ++++++++++++++++
    “”Malaysian Insider: By Shannon Teoh
    Feb 21, 2012

SHAH ALAM, Feb 21 — Tan Sri Harussani Zakaria called today on Malays to defend their race and rights to the land, saying Prophet Muhammad also spoke about his race.

The Perak Mufti said at the launch of former Selangor PAS chief Datuk Hasan Ali’s new Muslim NGO Jati that “it is compulsory for Malays to speak about this as this is a Malay country.””
    ++++++++++++++
There you have it, loud and clear.

    3. If you vote PRS, and PRS supports UMNO (as it is), and UMNO hegemony is destroying Dayak life, PRS supporters are not wise. The opposite of wise unfortunately is “fool.”

    4. I agree you must not trust DAP. It’s like trusting Barisan Nipu all these years. Trust yourself. If DAP don’t perform, vote Barisan Puzzleman, or Barisan Dayak Voice. BUT it is suicidal to trust only one party, because that Party leads you to your doom.

I advice you, my friend, to think logically. Be objective and don’t be lost in your sentiments.

  39. Iban Militant on February 22nd, 2012 10:52 am

Why majority of dayaks still support BN?
I think these dayaks are still waiting (nganti sereta ngarap) for the MRP and basic infrastructure promised by BN.

But once they have all the basic infrastructure in place then they re more wise in making decision who to vote for. Why? Because they are not felt indebted to BN. Only then they know their rights to have all that basic amenities.

They know, when there is road link to their longhouse- they pay road tax for the vehicle to drive on it. They pay tax to own the vehicle. They pay tax for their petrol. They pay tax for their vehicle parts.

When they have 24hrs electricity, they need to pay for cable or wiring, post, meter, transformer. And every month they
    pay for the electricity usage.

When they already have 24hrs piped water, they need to pay for the pipe installation, the fittings and each point of water source going to their biliks. And each month they pay for the water consumption.

Only then rayat not felt indebted to BN. Only then rayat sedar awake from the coconut shell…..what a wonderful world when you have those facilities, of course nothing is free. Then they have the clinic nearby, the school etc. Then they can exercise their right and play their good role in choosing the govt.

Laban BN ngai meda sida tu wise nyadi pengundi bijak…nya alai BN berat ati ka meri basic amenities ngagai rayat rmh panjai…Laban BN nemu rayat enda akan ulih diumpan agi ngau janji2 manis.

Good example is our longhouse…we don’t felt indebted to BN because we know our rights…we have all the basic infrastructure but we pay for it. We re more wise in our decision who to vote for.

I hope others are the same, dont make yourself hostage to BN, vote them out this PRU13.

  40. Iban Militant on February 22nd, 2012 11:15 am

Why majority of Malays/ Melanaus support BN even a stump stands on BN ticket they also vote for it?
Simple answer (but opposite to dayaks), because they are treated as anak emas by BN. They are given top priority in all field of devt, job opportunities, scholarship, higher institution, contract, business etc.

All in their families, the educated ones 99% employed unless they chose not to take the opportunities. They have good reasons to support BN but unlike the marginalized dayaks vote for umpan & janji kosong BN.

Can we see the differences? Why should we vote for BN if their policies are unfair to dayaks? And worst BN rob dayak NCR lands!

  41. Dayak Voice on February 22nd, 2012 11:32 am

WHY, as a Dayak, I reject PRS, SPDP and PBB.
    ____________________________________________
What is the meaning of “Ketuanan Melayu” to us Dayaks? Has UMNO ever publicly and officially rescind (remove) that mantra from its members?

I don’t support “Ketuanan Dayak,” but I am pro fairness to all races. UMNO today is not the same as UMNO of Tunku Abdul Rahman. It is racist to the core. Lets look at the proof:

    1. UMNO controls appointments to all GLCs like Petronas, Maybank, UEM, MISC, MRCB, Telekom, Tenaga etc. UMNO decides who sits on the board.

    2. UMNO also decides who handles EPF, Bank Negara, Finance Ministry, KLSE, Securities Commission, PNB, PNUB etc.

    3. And when UMNO chooses, there’re no Dayaks from Sarawak and Sabah.

Commonsense logic dictates that we must ask why, why, why? We all have brain to think.

  42. Cikgu Iban on February 22nd, 2012 12:55 pm

    Unggal Ciribut,

    Quit I won’t!

I am not for myself. I am for my people; the Iban people.

My conscience is clear. I try to help the Ibans who feel sidelined and discriminated by the present BN government. The Ibans in BN might not have ever felt as such. They do not have problems with the current government policies. Good for them but not certainly good for many Ibans.

Our poor are very poor. The level of knowledge and understanding among the Ibans of things surrounding us is much to be desired. They do not even know that they are seriously sidelined marginalised and what not.

Other races are taking great advantage of our poor understanding. The Chief minister has been doing very good in taking the opportunity to fool us. Not only the poor Ibans have been fooled, our Iban leaders are also quite submissive toward the current ruling party in the state.

You could always listen to what our 3 Tan Sris have to say when it comes to Dayak Iban issues. During the recent DUN sitting.

Headline after headlines in the dailies are talking about the ways in strengthening the Malayan Malay supremacy. But what have our Iban leaders mentioned about the Ibans which has made headline in the paper?

    Almost nil!

Only last night, I met with an Iban driver for one of the companies involved in SCORE project. I asked him how much this project could benefit the Ibans when there Indian, Indon technicians are already brought in by the companies. Even Bangla are involved in the kitchen to help serve the workers from India and Indonesia. So, where are the Ibans in relation to the project in SCORE.

I also asked him whether or not his company contributes EPF and SOCSO. He said that the company will not be making such deductions. Therefore, Unggal, could you afford to see how other races have abused our very own Iban souls?

No, I won’t quit this blog even tough Dr JBA has changed his platform. He has his own reasons. He has explained them to me when I happened to bumped into him along the street one day.

At the moment I am still sticking to this channel

    Cheers…

Being a concerned voter is not exactly like a concerned Dayak Iban.

Therefore, if we are only a concerned voter, we probably know what is his mind.

We dayaks like to blame others for all our predicaments. This is typcial longhouse ruai mentality – we are happy to talk on negativity, rather than positivity. We are ‘happy’ when a death occur. But when somebody achieves success, we tend to harp on his/her weak points.

Our culture, our practices, our mentality, our beliefs, our longhouse social system – all require a major overhaul. A social re-engineeering. Just like what Mao Tse Tung did to China many years ago, – and look at the results today. China is undisputable the leading country in the world today.

Our longhouse mentality is making us too comfortable. We are afraid of changing the status quo or practices in the longhouse as we do not want to upset our relatives and fellow longhouse folks. We tolerate poor time keeping, low drive to achieve educational excellence. We wait for government to spoon feed us with subsidies and ‘bantuan rakyats’ or MRPs. We expect our relatives to give share free-bees all the time. We expect free water, electricity, Astro, roof sheets and roadtax. We expect our relatives and in-laws to help us to secure jobs without any consideration of meritocracy. We don’t want to rock the boat.

Our YBs and politicians are just doing what we expect them to do i.e. continue to provide quick ‘free bees’, MRPs, water and electricity. During elections, we expect the YBs to provide some ‘assistance’, and of course they will oblige. We treat our YBs just like gods. We dress up in our finest when the YBs come visiting to the longhouse. So, do we blame the YBs, or do we blame ourselves for our predicaments?

Our fellow chinese, indians and malays (in west malaysia) have gone through a lot of changes both physically and mentally during the past few years. They have moved out of their comfort zones, and are now more agressive in their pursuit of success and well-being. They are taking care of themselves first before taking care of others. they are much more matured and strengthened both politically and socially.

So fellow dayaks, unless we are prepared to change ourselves first, we will be changed by others. Change is painful, change will cause us to lose a few longhouse friends and disconnect us from a few relatives. But we do not have any other choice.

We hope and wish for more Patrick Sibat leave/ resign from PRS/ BN and join Pakatan Rakyat.

Nice to hear the interview (by RFS) on Sibat. Not only him aware of dayak BN impotence to solve dayak issues on poverty, social problems & lack of basic amenities. In fact, all PRS members very much aware of their suicidal move the moment they form a party.

The party formation was/ is purely for personal interest. Look at their leaders; they not only betrayed their people but also robbed dayaks’ NCR lands.

I think the members still hold to the party because they live on the crumbs- a little portion from their leaders ill gotten wealth. Otherwise, no reason to stay put in the hopeless & useless party like PRS.

I think Sibat also not leave the party had Masing allocated some shares of belian concession to him.
And one obvious reason made him leave PRS, Masing will not nominate him to contest in the coming GE13.

And I think it s not fair for Roland Engan if PKR pick Sibat to replace him for the Baram seat. Sibat must work for PKR at least until the next term before PKR could consider his candidacy.

Boleh jadi katak tapi jgn ambil kesempatan kalau nak masuk PR.

What say you KOW and the rest of DB? Lama nadai meda KOW…..masih minum 10 tin beer dgn BN?
