TNB is NOT buying electricity from BAKUN
Taken from: The Edge
Dayakbaru:
With so much hope place on Bakun to generate income for Sarawak, the people has been made to sacrifice for nothing. The political leaders do not seem to care and are not taking responsibility for the failure of Bakun.
Why are we in such a situation? We protest over Bakun but the State Government would not listen. They continued to build the Murum dam. There is no need to build this dam when it is not bringing money to Sarawak. The Government has to relocate 1000 Penan away from their ancestor land. Why is the Government so insistence in building this dam. Is it treally for Sarawak development or for the business opportunities of the political leaders in the government
Corruption is common in Sarawak. The political leaders are mostly living on money got from corrupted practices.
The money spent on Bakun could have eradicate ALL hard core poverty in Sarawak. Now all we have got is a white elephant in Bakun and a heart full of misery for those who has been relocated from the original home. Read more

Dayak Rebak Baru: What does NEM or NEP mean to them
Written by: Dr. John Brian Anthony
Dayakbaru:
NEM not to remove NEP
Many people read such news in the newspaper and but could not understand what it means. I will share my view on the matter and what it means to the Dayak of Sabah and Sarawak.
Government intention
There is very little difference between NEM and NEP. NEP is designed to improve the whole lot of “bumiputera”. Has it been successful. It has been successful among the political elite and especially UMNO putra of the highest order.
Has NEP benefited the Dayak in general? Most Dayak do not even know that NEP exist because the system sucks in all the opportunities as in Sarawak. The top political leaders take the opportunities or give it to their cronies leaving nothing to the people.
What is the evidence? Just look at the level of business participation by the Dayak – is it high or on the very low side. To me, Dayak in business is negligible. If you try to compute Dayak economic equity it would not touch even half a percent of the national equity.
Why does this failure happen?
The government do not know how to implement the NEP. The Government used the usual delivery system that is fraud with corruption, self interest and a control by those in political power. Ordinary Dayak has literally no chance at all. Capital fir business is difficult to get and government support is at very basic level. Basically, the business opportunity is taken away from the people by the government leaders. Can you understand that!
Then implementation requires delivery system that must be equip with human resources. Just look at the resources that is serving the delivery system. It is formed by one-race only. This race keep back the info from Dayak. If they really need Dayak representation in certain initiative it will be window dressing only. Read more

Samling threatens Penan with retaliation
Taken from: The Malaysian Today

Logging giant threatens to suspend all transport services for locals unless Penan retract sexual abuse allegations
Dayakbaru:
Samling is but just a name of a company to many of us that is involved in logging activities in Sarawak. Samling has a large track of forest licensed to them for logging. Unfortunately, Samling has attracted a lot of bad publicity over their relationship with the Penan. It may mean that Samling is very poor in managing stakeholder interest, in this case the Penan that lives within Samling concession. It may be that Samling do not have the will to manage their relationship with the Penan due to profit and greed issues.
Hong Kong Shanghai Bank (HSBC) role
Samling may have many bankers that they used in their business. HSBC is one of them. When you talk about financing logging activities the risk maybe high but then the profit for the bank would also be high. If Samling is not able or even not willing to address the Penan issue then a bank like HSBC should play some role to promote sustainability. Why? The bank is an important partner to Samling and therefore is participant to the ill treatment of the Penan.
Banks and natural resource extraction business
Many Dayakbaru would be exposed for the first time to the concept of sustainability and also sustainable development. EXTRACTION is an activity that downgraded the environment quality of our world. That is why we have “climate change” as an example. In this case, in Sarawak we have extraction of timber from the forest. This contribute directly to flood and global warming. In what way? The forest act as the retention mechanism to slow down water from heavy rain to go into the river. the delay allow the river to regulate its flow into the sea. Forest logging also resulted in heavy soil erosion incident and this soil is brought down to the river filling up the bottom of the river and also the mouth of the river as in the Rejang River mouth and delta.
Another example of extraction will be coal mining in SCORE area. The pumping of oil and gas from under the ground is another example. All of these activities produces negative effect. Who duty is it then to mitigate this problem. It is the government duty to provide sufficient law to control the effect of the activities and also the responsibility of the company that is carrying out the activities. In Sarawak, do you think that the government has enough law in place and also serious enough to monitor the activities and take action where necessary? I am not at all convince.
How about the logging companies – do they care for the environment? Does the Environmental impact Assessment mean anything to them? How about a system of managing their environmental risk, do you think these companies really put money to protect the environment that they have damage? Evidence suggest that all these environmental control activities in any is at a minimal level.
Why is managing the environment and sustainability important?
When you extract from the earth a resource: eg oil and gas, mineral mining, logging etc you cannot replace what is taken out. You deplete the resources. This depletion will make our later generation poorer. If the Government do not manage sustainability issue well today, the future of our children would be very bleak. All responsible Government must address this issue. In Sarawak, the State Government might be doing something about this sustainability issue, but the suffering of the people due to environmental problem caused by business is real and needed to be addressed urgently.
Conclusion.
Is Samling a responsible company. Norway do not think so. How about the Sarawak State Government, are they serious about managing the environment? If they don’t all our future generation will suffer from their neglect.
Change WE Must by making environmental issue an important political issue in Malaysia.

LONG AJENG, MALAYSIA. Malaysian logging giant Samling has threatened the indigenous Penan communities of Sarawak’s Upper Baram region with the suspension of all transport services provided for locals unless they retract sexual abuse and rape allegations against the timber companies active in the region. The new dispute between Samling and the Penan arose after the release of a report by an international fact-finding mission in July 2010. The report had uncovered seven new cases of sexual exploitation of Penan girls and women in the Upper Baram region by timber workers and had asked the Malaysian government to address the grievances of the Penan communities.
According to Penan sources, Jawa Nyipa, headman of Long Ajeng, was asked by Samling officials to sign a statement that the women in the region had retracted their allegations of sexual abuse by timber company staff. Jawa Nyipa was told that, unless he signed the document, all transport services for the locals would be suspended. The headman refused to sign the statement but the Penan are concerned about the implications of Samling’s threat to suspend transport for the impoverished villagers in the Upper Baram region.
The Penan, who live in remote jungle villages in Borneo, rely on logging companies for transport to rural centres in order to reach the local markets, obtain medical treatment and send their children to secondary school. Samling’s refusal to provide transport is likely to put them in a very difficult situation as they are unable to afford other means of transport. Last year, logging companies operating in the Middle Baram region ceased to provide transport for a number of communities who had voiced concerns over sexual abuse and rape by timber workers.
Samling (HKEX 3938) is a globally operating Malaysian timber conglomerate with an annual turnover of US$ 480 million. Last week, the Norwegian Government Pension fund excluded Samling from its portfolio because of the company’s involvement in illegal logging and the fact that it had caused and is still causing severe environmental damage.

Buy Bakun Back?
Written by: Dr. John Brian Anthony
The Government never told us
The Sarawak Government never told us that Bakun belong to the Federal Government. Now, the Government wanted to buy Bakun back from Federal. It is now not a nice idea to know that the State Government can sell any part of Sarawak to outsiders without letting the Sarawak people know about it.
Our leaders talked so much about Bakun and its potential and how it can richest to Sarawak. The Bakun folks sacrifice their history, heritage and way of life only for a few ringgit. Is the money used to pay compensation worth it when we now know that Bakun do not belong to us sarawakian. It is located only in Sarawak. Read more

Dayakbaru:
No wonder the Sarawak Members of Dewan Undangan Negeri sarawak cannot protest against Taib wrong doing. Taib has the bait (money) to keep them in silence mode.
Little wonder too the YBs are talking from nonsense down to be silly, the money power is clouding and crowding their brain. Why don’t the YBs try live a simple straight forward life. Serve the people who elect you and make good laws for Sarawak.

Bumiputera – 30% EQUITY
Written by: Dr. John Brian anthony
Bumiputera useless word to Dayak
Bumiputera is a non-word in the Federal Constitution. The term was only introduced in the National Economics policy implementation program. The word bumiputera for a Dayak like me is a “useless and hopeless” word. Try to go to the bank and say that you are bumiputera – will the bank give you a loan. Then go to the government office that issue AP and tell them that you are a bumiputera, will they give AP.
Maybe that is difficult, go and see taib and say you are bumiputera, will he give you timber license, plantation land, direct negotiation of government contract – NO!. Bumiputera is a dirty word to trick you.
But then – who is bumiputera?
You them everyday – the Ministers, the YBs, the influential political families – the UMNO (putra), these are bumiputera. These people are given the “special privilege” as spelled out in Section 153 of the Federal Constitution.UMNO used this term to for all malays and natives of sabah and Sarawak. In real life, it is only meant for the elite politician.
You can have the people with political powers who insist that the “bumiputera 30% equity”must be maintain. Read more

Floods in Sarawak

Hard Hit areas
(1) Sibu Braces for bigger floods.
38 evacuation centres in sibu, eight in Selangau identified and placed on standby. The rainfall is abnormal in August and it rains almost every night.
(2) Flood in Kapit, worst in six years.
Many schools and longhouses were submerged in one to eight feet of water.
Song and Katibas also suffers from frequent flood.
Worsening flood
I can see that flood can only get worst in each coming year. The authority is asking NGOs and government civil servant for help to manage the flood response plan.

Rural Agricultural Stations
Written by: Dr.John Brian Anthony
Government Neglect the Rural Agricultural Station for the last 10 years
I am sure the Government would not be bothered to study the impact of making the Rural Agricultural Station inactive for about 10 years. I remember the Sg. Sebiew Agriculture station in Bintulu (Km11) was a key player to generate skill and knowledgeable farmer. A lot of money was used to train farmers and introducing new farming programs and technique in the mid-90′s.
Suddenly, everything die down and the agricultural station was left to near rotting. It was an eye sore and demoralising to the farmers who has depended on the station as training centres.
Can Jabu answer that question first, why did the Government abandon the Rural Agricultural Station (RAS) in the first place?
My guess is the government was so excited by the large oil palm plantation and leaving the RAS to waste is one of the government strategy to ensure that the Sarawak farmers do not expand their farming land and therefore is not develop. If the land is not develop then the Government can rob it and sell it to foreign companies and even the YBs and their cronies. Afterall, Awang Tanah has said that land without land title is government land and the government is well known for taking NCR land and sell to plantation investors.
Secondly, is the government strategy of shutting down most of the RAS an effort to force Sarawak rural farmers to become plantation labourer earning RM$12 a day. Read more

New Economic Policy was abused by UMNO political leaders
Taken from: Malaysia Toady (YB William Leong)
Dayakbaru:
This article is imported to Dayakbaru in order to widen our issues on policies and politics that directly or in directly affect our Dayak progress in Malaysia. More often then not, those in UMNO who “claimed” to be Malay are the one who took the biggest opportunities provided by NEP. So much so, the Dayak of Sabah and Sarawak are treated like 3rd class citizen.
These UMNO Malay NEP richest are not sustainable. Simply put, most of them do not understand money and investment. They all want is to be a comfortable as their Sultans and without having to do much work. The UMNO Malay keep changing rule to suit themselves because they are not competitive both at knowledge and work.
NEP has been abused and will NEM be the same?
In the below article, we were given examples of misused and abused of the NEP.So what can we say about New Economic Model (NEM) when even our basic infrastructure and educational facilities in Sarawak is 30 years behind Malaya. How do we increase our income through skill and competency when the education system to facilitate higher studies opportunities are reserved mostly for one – race as in Sarawak. That resulted in a decline in the numbers of graduate among dayak on population ratio and also our inclusion in the running of the civil service.
Change WE Must. We must be pro-active and work hard for our progress. We must learn to live within the system with or without mrginalization and discrimination via race or religion. Read more

Minister empty talk on new model for NCR development
Written by: Dr. John Brian Anthony
Am I too quick off the starting block
I read Borneo Post page 5 that Dr. James Jemut Masing announced that The Ministry of Land Development using the future tense ” will come up with a new mechanism to develop NCR land” to bring greater benefits to its owner.
To me, this is an acceptance of facts by the Minister that the present model is not giving satisfactory benefits or return of investment to the land owners. We all know this situation and we always wonder why the government continue to insist on using the current model.
With this new “blur” NCR Development concept, Dr. James is basically politicizing the NCR land development. BN wanted to answer to the Opposition that a new model is coming up and convince the voters to be patient. Afterall, the saying goes, ROME is not built in one day. Does that sound familiar to you, Bn continue to give many excuses and will come up with almost nothing! Read more

Taib must resign as Chief Minister on moral ground
Taken from: Free Malaysia Today
Dayakbaru:
Take responsibility
Taib Mahmud must resign on moral ground. How could he continues in his post after the exposure of his unaccounted wealth. Many in Sarawak are living under hardcore poverty category while he build his business empire and state of the art business building in develop countries.
Many current government leaders are just as corrupt and without a shred of conscience for allowing so many people to live in poverty because the leaders have rob them of their land and natural resources. The elected leaders fail in their duty to give a higher standard of living and an improved quality of live.
Our Government leaders has lost the humanity part of themselves
Leaders must have basic moral standing and a strong sense of responsibility and justice. Our Government leaders has lost the humanity part of themselves in their blind pursuit of personal wealth.
To the people of very Sarawak, I would appeal to all to reject all corrupt government leaders in the coming election. We must protect our land from thieves and robbers.

YB selling plantation land for quick money at Bukit Bangunan.
Written by: Bukit Tunggal
Dayakbaru:
This article is an example of how our Dayak YB make money out of ” Concept of land development”. Is this a corrupt practice? You decide.
Instead of helping the constituency to progress in a sustainable manner, some YBs are using their position to grab the land within their constituency and sell it in the open market for quick profit. They make use of their elected status to grab the land and sell for personal gain.
BN YB is abusing their power to grab and sell land
These YBs has no vision for the rakyat that voted for them to improve their life. These YBs have only their personal interest to look after and not that of the people. These same YB have no conscience or no feeling about the poverty that is found in their constituency. These same YBs spoke bad of those who pointed out the power abuse but themselves abuse the power to make money for themselves. Some of these YB are even promoted to Minister level.
If you need to know why a country like Sarawak that is so rich with natural resources and yet so many people are poor, it is because our current government and leaders are so corrupt.
We should make an official report to the MACC
Have you ever wonder whether MACC will be able to bring such YB to court for such corrupt practice. It really depend on the Attorney General office to decide what is the next step. Maybe, the AG would have to refer to a higher authority. Here again, if no action is allowed to be taken, we are selling our country to the dogs. And that is what the government is doing, selling this country to the hungry dogs.
Do you still want to elect such a government again?. I think better not as the government might even sell us as slaves to other countries. Malaysia is famous for human trafficking as it is.

Bakun dam ready, but pledges to natives unfulfilled
Written by: Aidila Razak

But the woes of the indigenous community forced to leave their ancestral home to make way for the multi-billion ringgit dam more than a decade ago have yet to be resolved.
“Nothing much has changed. When we lived in our original longhouses we had access to clinics and schools too. The difference is now we have gone ‘negative’ with so many bills to pay,” he said.
Between September 1998 and July 1999, about 10,000 Kayan, Kenyah, Lahahan, Ukit and Penan people were forced to uproot even though the project was halted the year before due to the Asian Financial Crisis.
Figures disclosed in Parliament showed that Ekran Sdn Bhd, directly awarded the project in 1994 six months before it produced an environmental assessment impact (EIA), was paid about RM1 billion as ‘compensation’ for the halt.
In 1996, the High Court ruled in favour of three members of the Bakun indigenous community who sued the federal and state government for not making the EIA available to them before approving it.
The appeal by the federal and Sarawak governments were, however, upheld by the Court of Appeal the following year. Read more

The CURSE of Bakun Dam
Dayakbaru:
BAKUN is a big waste of our money and cruel to the Dayak living in the area. Now, we have cost over run into the billions. There is no buyer of the electricity. The undersea cable is too expansive and not viable. The aluminum smelting plant is not taking the power, and if does how much can it takes.
Sarawak will be overwhelmed with too much power. We try to sell power to Kalimantan and Brunei – but at what cost. The Government took too big a risk that it has put its people to jeopardy. The Government move is reckless maybe there is too much “corrupt” practices that the government lose sight of objectivity.
Why did the Government allow the Dayak to suffer for something that is really not worth while except for those who pocketed so much of the project money.
