Rahman Yakub – not honest in his opinion
Taken from The Malaysian Insider
Dayakbaru:
Pakatan Rakyat promised to give Sabah and Sarawak 20% of royalty from oil from 5% today given by BN should Pakatan Rakyat win control of Sarawak government.
My contention is we should received 50% on oil royalty. However 20% is 4 times better then the 5% we received today. 5% royalty is translated into about RM$1 billion per year. With 20% we will have RM4 billion per year and with that we can bring Sarawak upward very quickly in infra-structure progress and basic health and amenities services into Sarawak.
Najib promised RM3.8 billion to Sarawak today. The 20% oil royalty is much more then that and assumed we are given extra RM3.8 billion, then Sarawak would have RM$7.8 billion money to spend.
It is time we must claim our rights with bigger royalty from the Federal Government. Pakatan Rakyat give us such opportunity and I see no wrong for us to play our part as Sarawak voters to secure that 20% for Sarawak.
Rahman Yakub is an uncle to Taib. Sarawak has had enough of this family in ruling Sarawak. The family and family members are now very rich from sucking our State resources for personal gain.
Change WE must!- get our 20% royalty for Sarawak rapid development under Pakatan Rakyat. Read more

SKIM MUNOH RAYAT
Written by gkm2020
Updated: 12/03/2010 , 5:24PM
Nuju Endu Telaga Kumang and honorable DB readers,
My Personal Opinions:
The current BN Sarawak New NCR Land Development Concept is a “BOGUS” scheme!
DB will support any form of development and/or Joint-Venture (JV) if it’s transparent, accountable, equitable, producing strategic benefits, competitiveness and on “winning all basis” (all must wins structure) of business cooperation.
SKIM MUNOH RAYAT – LAND IS LIFE!
Frankly speaking, 60 years ‘leasehold model’ is too long for an Native Customary Rights Land JVC model as it often create greater corporate risk exposures. The current NCR 60/10/30 equity structures are fragile and high risk too.
The BN government policies on Land Code and JV model have been written and improvised to suit their needs and wants, and also with many agenda behind (bundles with long-term strategic power sharing and systematic alienation scheme). Yet, lacks of financial accountability, governing transparency and CSR policies. We can actually called it as “SKIM MAKAI RAYAT” or “SKIM MUNOH RAYAT”.
Notes: “Munoh” herein mean tried to kill off such community-business venture and an indirect effort to systematically alienated NCR lands from the Dayak. Land is my Life – Land is my Heritage – Land is my Native Rights – Land is my Liberty; and it is better to kill me than to move and marginalize me and my next generation. Rakyat today are no longer blind and/or naive. Tanah Adat is Pesaka Iban/Dayak. The current NCR Land Development Scheme has many loopholes and seen to have a different agenda to indirectly taking away the rights of the natives to manage their own lands in the JV model. Currently we have more than 100 legal cases pending and/or on going against this JV Scheme. Why? I presume you may have some ‘denialable’ answer(s) to all these issues.

The New Model: Joint Venture Companies
Taken from article by: Assoc Prof Ramy Bulan
Dayakbaru:
Many YBs are not even familiar with this New Model. That way, we hear them talked nonsense in the longhouse.Instead of explaining the facts to the people they issue threat – blacklisting TR, no projects to be given to those who oppose the JV etc.
We Dayakbaru must understand the detail of this new model to improve our knowledge of the mechanism and to identify areas that are disadvantageous to us Dayak NCR land owners.
The Concept of the Joint Venture
The concept of the joint venture is premised on the assumption that Native Customary Land, which is now unorganised and fragmented, can be turned into an economic asset through the creation of a Native Customary Land Bank. Once pooled, it is assumed that large-scale plantation development and optimum returns can be realised. It is also assumed that large areas of Native Customary Land are attractive and viable for private investment. Read more

Agricultural Policies and Land Development Schemes
Taken from Article by: Assoc Prof and Deputy Dean of Faculty of Law UM (Ramy Bulan)
Dayakbaru:
Let us try to understand better what the government is trying to do to help Dayak. Has the government delivered according to their plan or has they deviated from their plan and abuse the plan for their own profit.
Why is it impossible for NCR land order to apply and develop their land on their own? Is this the government policies or is this one of the way the government is putting NCR land owners down and stay in poverty.
Small Holdings
To encourage native smallholders to participate in commercial land development, a series of land development schemes were undertaken from the 1960s to the 1980s. These have been documented by many writers such as Hong (1987), King (1988), Cleary and Eaton (1996), Ngidang (1998) and Majid Cooke (2002). Read more

Not Enough jobs for Youth in Sabah and Sarawak
Written by Dr. John Brian Anthony
Low Economic Development in Sabah/ Sarawak
The first symptom of poor economic activities in the State is the exodus of Youth from rural to urban areas. The Youth could not find anything with financial rewards to do in their kampung and longhouses.
Why? This happen when the government DO NOT have good economic planning for the people. The rural people are worst affected because their option for getting income is limited to basic agricultural activities. That make Land Title very important as it provide security to the farmers that no body will take away their land from just below their eyes and also the land could be part of the requirement to raise capital to improve their farm production and bring it down to market.
The government is not focus on providing such facilities to Dayak. The government talk about rural growth centre and what we see is more “Government Buildings and young town government servant who has never farm or do gardening before” to work in such offices. There is simply no “soul and drive” by those in the growth centre to make sure that there is economic growth in the rural areas. Read more

Sarawak is making a study of constructing 5 more dams
Taken from The Malaysian Insider
Dayakbaru:
Brunei only needed about 100 -150MW. Sarawak would like to produce a total quantity of 6000MW.
Kalimantan wanted to buy some – actually the electricity poles has been erected by the Kalbar’s government for many years already and still no electricity power supply from Sarawak yet. What is happening – as of today semua nya “wayang kulit” from Taib.
Leo Moggie came and say we will look at the price – whether it is competitive or not – meaning Independent Power Plant supply is adequate. Actually, TNB is losing money by paying for power it is not using. TNB has to pay for the excess power production as per their IPP contract with TNB.
In this context, I cannot understand where Sarawak wanted to sell its electricty.
Sarawak will end up owing so much money
If our government continue to spend our money so freely, I can think only of the heavy debt Sarawak will carry. It can also mean our debt is so much that even our great grand children who is not born yet in 30 years time is already committed to pay our today’s debt. That is a very bad situation to be in.
Why do you think this damn dam is needed?
I could see that certain political leaders is after the timber logs in the dam area. By constructing the dam, the government has reason to reconfigure the timber concession. It all boils down to “what is it in for you”.
The livelihood of the people, their roots and heritage means nothing to these greedy politicians. The dams are just excuses to get their hand on to more money.

Effect of Aluminium on plant and people
Taken from the Guardian
Fishing Village
The roads that wander through the southwestern peninsula of Trinidad pass small fishing villages, mangrove swamps, and coconut plantations; they skirt herds of buffalypso and reveal sheltered beach coves. This February, Alcoa signed an agreement in principle with the Trinidad and Tobago Government that threatens to fundamentally alter this gentle landscape. Plans by the Pittsburgh-based manufacturing company to build a large aluminum smelter have sparked criticism from local residents and environmentalists.
Company promote the project as boon to local employment and other community benefits
The $US1.5 billion project slated for the Chatham/Cap-de-Ville area envisions a 341,000 metric-tons-per-year aluminum smelter, an anode plant, and a cast house. Alcoa, the world’s leading producer of aluminum, is promoting the project as a boon to local employment and other community benefits. Read more

China to develop aluminium smelting plant in Sarawak.

Dayakbaru
I am an Environmental Safety and Health trained person. I am an EHS practitioner and today I provide EHS Consultancy and Training Services to multi-national companies in Malaysia and other overseas continents. Indeed my Doctorate is in Sustainability Management. I have to state here today that:
“aluminium smelting plant and its processes produce irreversible environmental impacts and highly hazardous to health side effect”.
I have written of the side -effect in my earlier article. I want o state it clearly that I cannot accept the environment, safety and health risk associated with aluminium smelting plant operation. This is a notice to the State Government and the people of Sarawak living near the plant that the aluminium smelting plant produce hazardous health consequences.
I DO NOT want to see the suffering of the people in Sarawak through health problems as a result of this industry. Nor do I want to hear that the government has not been warned and the people of Sarawak not informed of some of the hazards associated with aluminium smelting plant process.
I will hold the governmnet of today accountable for health and environmental problems to the people of Sarawak in the near future. In such a case, Sarawak people must claim against the government for any damages to health and the environment as a result of Aluminium Smelting Industry and its processes. Read more

Suggestion on HOW to develop NCR
In the last two weeks, four Iban leaders expressed their viewpoints on how to develop idle Native Customary Rights (NCR) land. All of them are NCR land owners, but they have taken different stands on how best to help the Iban to develop their NCR lands. Three of them were of the opinion that idle NCR lands should be developed commercially. The fourth person wanted the Iban to develop some of their NCR lands themselves and the government is to give subsidy to help them. Read more

Buffalo Highway in Sarawak.
Taken from Sarawak Update
The Buffalo Highway that linked Sarawak to its coastal villages would only be completed in 2010.
It is a State Road
The Ministry of Works website when replying to a complaint letter published in Berita Harian stressed that the road is under the purview of Sarawak Public Work.
“It is a State road and not Federal road,” it stated, acknowledging that the road had been in existent since 1970.
Road fit only for buffalo to walk on
The road is an important link that connect Sarawak with the Rejang Delta coastal villages. If the road is slightly better than what it is now, “family-wheeled” tourism would be boosted by leap and bound as Sarawakian would love to venture to the Melanau hinterland that were once only accessible by riverine or sea.
Based on the information at the website, the bone-shaking more than two hours bumpy ride involves a stretch of 54.2 kilometer from Sibu/Bintulu junction to Mukah will be completed by 2010.
Where has the State money gone to – with timber truck / palm oil lorry and coal carrying lorry using the buffalo road
The website comically stated that the road were badly damaged since 2005 by giant trucks that transport commodities such as coal and oil palm.
From this road you would reach Mukah, the town that is synonym with Melanau populace, before branching out to not less than 10 other sub districts/township like Belawai, Daro, Igan, Jerijeh, Matu, Oya, Paloh, Rejang, Sebako, Semop and other small villages.
The local are angry with this road
The local anger toward the stretch is shown openly via a FaceBook grouping named We Hate! Mukah-Selangau Road! less than a month ago – here with 1,425 members and growing.
Passing the buck
Just like any Ministry, in a typical Barisan Nasional government the website as expected passed the buck: – “Pihak kami memohon pengadu berhubung terus dengan JKR Sarawak untuk meklumat lanjut.”

Betong – the masterpiece of BN politics of development
Written by Dr. John Brian Anthony
Island Mentality
It is nice to hear that Tan Sri Jabu would like to invite Anwar Ibrahim, Head of Opposition in Parliament and Pakatan Rakyat defecto leader to Betong to see for himself the development that the town has achieved. Betong is Jabu’s constituency and he has held the seat for about 30 over years and at the same time the Deputy Minister of Sarawak for about the same duration.
My thought were how myopic Jabu’s ways of thinking and it smack on almost how ” full of himself ” for trying to show off or naive to try to impress a progressive and international known personality as Anwar with Betong development. The reason IS simple: Betong is not even 10% of say Butterworth – the town nearest to Permatang Pauh, Anwar’s constituency.
It is rather disturbing for me if the Sarawak Deputy Chief Minister is thinking of Betong as bench mark for progress in Sarawak because it is not! Read more

PM missed opportunity in demonstrating his leadership
Taken from The Malaysian Insider
Things that side track Najib today
Datuk Seri Najib Razak is betting on his Government Transformation Programme (GTP) and the recovering economy to win his Barisan Nasional (BN) enough votes to win the next general elections.
But commentators and analysts say that such a strategy can work only if he is not sidetracked by race rows and other controversies.
And with yesterday’s racist comments by a senior aide severely embarrassing the prime minister and the ongoing “Allah” row not going away, it remains a “big if.”
“The GTP is a vote winner but the key to it’s success is BN’s ability to avoid another issue such as the ‘Allah’ controversy,” said James Chin, a political science lecturer at Monash University here. Read more

What happened to the promised to complete Jalan Lapok?
Written by Dr. John Brian Anthony
Busy Road
Jalan Lapok – is passable mainly by 4WD. During rainy days you it gets very muddy and the pot hole is deep and big. Who uses this road? Mainly Dayak. Are these rich Dayak? I don’t think so, but to get to Miri from Long Lama you will have to pat $100 per person on “pirate vehicles”.
The road condition has caused many damage to vehicles, accidents, waste of time for the very long journey due to “bad” road condition. The government – through Samy ak Vellu promised to repair and upgrade the road. Till today, there is no news at all on the progress of the promised.
Why did the government promised the people?
The government wanted to get vote from those living along the Lapok road. Did the people voted for BN? Yes they do. But did the government remember that the voters has not been given what they want – the government keep quiet beacuse it has no money.
Sometime I do think that it is on purpose that the government choose not to repair or upgrade the road. If they do, then the people will progress and become economically independent. Read more

Salcra struggling to keep its operation going
Written by Dr. John Brian Anthony
Promoting Land Development through Salcra
I spoke to a Sarawak cabinet member and he felt that Salcra has good intention but is run very poorly by the current team, led by Tan Sri Jabu himself. Salcra is an investment entity but run using government service mentality. That being the case, it is constantly running out of money. The divident paid out are politically motivated without justification from Salcra financial standing and profitability ratio.
The Financing of Salcra
Salcra got its money by obtaining loan from the Federal government. Despite so many years in operation, Salcra is not known for its economics and business prowness but an institute that is highly politicize. Tan Sri Jabu who helm SALCRA since it was formed -do not make any break through in its business model. Salcra is highly dependent on small loan given by Federal Government. Read more
