Dayak Rebak Baru: What does NEM or NEP mean to them

Written by: Dr. John Brian Anthony

Dayakbaru:

NEM not to remove NEP

Many people read such news in the newspaper and but could not understand what it means. I will share my view on the matter and what it means to the Dayak of Sabah and Sarawak.

Government intention

There is very little difference between NEM and NEP. NEP is designed to improve the whole lot of “bumiputera”. Has it been successful. It has been successful among the political elite and especially UMNO putra of the highest order.

Has NEP benefited the Dayak in general? Most Dayak do not even know that NEP exist because the system sucks in all the opportunities as in Sarawak. The top political leaders take the opportunities or give it to their cronies leaving nothing to the people.

What is the evidence? Just look at the level of business participation by the Dayak – is it high or on the very low side. To me, Dayak in business is negligible. If you try to compute Dayak economic equity it would not touch even half a percent of the national equity.

Why does this failure happen?

The government do not know how to implement the NEP. The Government used the usual delivery system that is fraud with corruption, self interest and a control by those in political power. Ordinary Dayak has literally no chance at all. Capital fir business is difficult to get and government support is at very basic level. Basically, the business opportunity is taken away from the people by the government leaders. Can you understand that!

Then implementation requires delivery system that must be equip with human resources. Just look at the resources that is serving the delivery system. It is formed by one-race only. This race keep back the info from Dayak. If they really need Dayak representation in certain initiative it will be window dressing only. Read more

New Economic Policy was abused by UMNO political leaders

Taken from: Malaysia Toady (YB William Leong)

Dayakbaru:

This article is imported to Dayakbaru in order to widen our issues on policies and politics that directly or in directly affect our Dayak progress in Malaysia. More often then not, those in UMNO who “claimed” to be Malay are the one who took the biggest opportunities provided by NEP. So much so, the Dayak of Sabah and Sarawak are treated like 3rd class citizen.

These UMNO Malay NEP richest are not sustainable. Simply put, most of them do not understand money and investment. They all want is to be a comfortable as their Sultans and without having to do much work. The UMNO Malay keep changing rule to suit themselves because they are not competitive both at knowledge and work.

NEP has been abused and will NEM be the same?

In the below article, we were given examples of misused and abused of the NEP.So what can we say about New Economic Model (NEM) when even our basic infrastructure and educational facilities in Sarawak is 30 years behind Malaya. How do we increase our income through skill and competency when the education system to facilitate higher studies opportunities are reserved mostly for one – race as in Sarawak. That resulted in a decline in the numbers of graduate among dayak on population ratio and also our inclusion in the running of the civil service.

Change WE Must. We must be pro-active and work hard for our progress. We must learn to live within the system with or without mrginalization and discrimination via race or religion. Read more

Racial Conflict in Malaysia is systemic

Taken from: The Malaysian Insider

Dayakbaru:

I studied in Malaya in 1972 and worked there for a few years. Then I came back to Sarawak. In 1994 I went back to Malaya till today. Did I see changes in the “racial” landscape. Of course, much has changed. Is it changing for the better – I think not. The younger population get to know lesser of each other and much lesser about other races in Malaysia.

Can we blame the young people for racialism?

Difficult. In many Malaysian schools, we have many single race teachers and single religion. We have even more school that is control by single-race teachers. In a way, racial problem is perpetuated through systemic approach that has now become systemic in our education system. Our education system deliver values among other things and racialism is one of the negative value we get from schools.

Narrow thinking

The School Principal “racist” remark hopefully is isolated. But then, you never know when a country get to be over obsessed with race and religion. Such extremism can cloud a person perspective of the world and the more they hold on to extremism, the narrower their thinking get. Read more

Can Teachers be active as Opposition Politician?

Taken from: Borneo Post

Dayakbaru:

My question is: What happen if the TEACHER is an OPPOSITION supporter, would they  be allowed to be active in politics?

Or is this another “double standard” implementation exercise.

If the TEACHERS are allowed, can all other Government officers with the same Grade be allowed to be active in politic? If the answer is NO, Why?

We cannot accept Government proposal blindly unless we are stupid. And Stupid we are NOT!

Change WE Must

Protest Against Taib to be held in London on 26th July 2010

Taken from: Malaysia Today

Dayakbaru:

This is just a start. There maybe possibilities that the ” very Sarawak  ” may gather courage to stage a protest against Taib in one of the town in Sarawak. With Taib as head of our Government, much of our money is “misdirected” away from development.

We must have a recovery plan after Taib leaves the Chief Minister post. We need to recover the Very Sarawak money that may have been taken out illegally.

Protest Venue:

Where: Entrance of the Said Business School, Park End Street, Oxford OX1 1HP
When: From 9.30 am Monday 26th July 2010

One of Asia’s greatest kleptocrats and single-handedly one of the most destructive forces against the environment and the people who depend on it, the Chief Minister of Sarawak, Abdul Taib Mahmud, will be making the opening address at the Said Business School’s inaugural Islamic Branding and Marketing Forum on Monday 26th July.

During his 30 years of iron grip over Sarawak, Taib Mahmud has systematically plundered a country once rich in natural resources, oil and timber.  He and his family are now multi-billionaires, while indigenous tribes resort to the law courts to reclaim their ancestral lands. Read more

Very few Dayak are given Public Service Department scholarship

Written by: Dr. John Brian Anthony

We have come to a point whereby we do not trust what ever the Government wanted to tell us. This is because the Government is always talking very nicely but the Government failed to deliver on their promise.

In this case, we have heard much about PSD. The Government should disclose the figure of the number of students that has been given PSD scholarship and we are interested to know “how many Dayak” were given PSD scholarship.

We do not want to hear how many “bumiputera” were given PSD scholarship because Malay like to hide behind this word when they can abused the “special allocation”  to bumiputera by taking away allocation meant for  Dayak and retain the vacancies for themselves. Dayak leaders are not blind but they keep their mouth shut to protect their stomach.

The Government talk about justice but their justice is loop-sided.

We young Dayak hate the Government for practicing loop-sided ( unjust) practices of favoring one race. You will see that the Government said” 7% allocated for bumiputera of Sabah and 8% for bumiputera of Sabah”. This is a shining example of government lies and deceit. The bumiputera here mean Malay and Muslim, not Dayaks. Read more

Iban language to be taught at University level

Taken from: Borneo Post

Dayakbaru:

This is a very good development which we all must support to ensure its success. The Iban news section of Borneo Post uses very poor Iban writing. The same is true with most news in the Iban section of RTM.Even lyrics of Iban songs has been bastardized between Bahasa Malaysia and Iban language.

It is time we all improve our Iban writing by attending Iban language classes once the teachers has been sufficiently trained.

Association of Education Development of Iban Lnguage (AEDIL)

The elevation of the Iban language to be a subject offered in local universities is something the Iban community here is proud of.President of the Association of Education Development of Iban Language (AEDIL) William Baja Jap said Iban Language as a subject is finally available in most universities in Malaysia.

“Just like other languages such as Chinese and Tamil, Iban language has now become a subject offered in some local universities.

“This is indeed great news for the Iban community especially those in this state,” he said.

Student rape by teacher

Written by: Dr John Brian Anthony

Rape is NOT a common crime in school

It is shocking to read that ‘rape”is happening in school and as low as the Primary school among children aged 11 and 12 years. The Education Department must investigate and if found bring guilty the teacher much be put under criminal charges.

A teacher job is not only noble but sacred. Meaning, they are to form the attitude and the behaviour of their student to make them into a responsible adult in later years of life. Those teachers who cannot hold and check their lust has NO RIGHTS to be near any innocent children. A “rape” will scar a child though out her life.it is the most horrible crime for a young girl.

Society cannot accept such behaviour and therefor the Education department cannot ignore such cases. The Education Department has to protect the good name and deeds of other teachers, who are many and brought down to the dirty sewage drain by teachers who are guilty of rape. It would hurt the Education Department and Teachers association more by hiding the facts.

As the children grow into professional people one day, a lawyer, a teacher, etc the crime can be re surfaced by the victim. It is better to end the episode now.

A letter to tell you It is true!

Written by: Dr. John Brian Anthony

I posted this letter directed to me to help you better understand what is going on in our federal public service. The State Government do not have a system in place to monitor Federal Department employment practices in our state. Is YB Datuk Douglas Uggah able to bring changes by increasing Sarawakian content in the Federal Department? We will let his performance speak to us, not his promise which is actually nothing until result is shown.

I would like to thank the writer of the below letter for your sincerity in spirit in developing our country.

Shalom & Greetings to you Dr John Brian Anthony.
