Sarawak Dayak National Union TGA

Written by Dr. John Brian Anthony

I have been very occupied the last few days and therefor has not been able to give an update on the TGA and other new topics of interest. But first let me address some news from SDNU TGA.

The Broken Shield news

I would like to thank my friend Jetty for eloquently reported an incident whereby the Deputy Minister arrived earlier then the President of SDNU. The slip up was not as a result of poor organization. It is attributed to a communication mistake made by a third party to the President. The SDNU president has apologised to his good personal friend, the Deputy Minister and all is well. Some people may like to take this opportunity to bash the SDNU President and we think that is fair feed back because that is what actually happen.

Borneo Forum Revisits M’sia Agreement Pledges

By Joe Fernandez

Jan 24, 10 (From Malaysiakini)

Borneo Forum (BF), an all-Borneo NGO umbrella body, made the Malaysia Agreement the focus of its deliberations in Kota Kinabalu yesterday.

BF brings together the Borneo Heritage Foundation (BHF), the Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU) and observers from Kalimantan.

The ad hoc meeting in KK resolved that the Malaysia Agreement will be raised by a Sabah-Sarawak delegation at a briefing at the House of Commons in London on March 19.

The London meeting was set up by Hindu Rights Action Front (Hindraf) chair P Waythamoorthy (right) who said that Hindraf will also be represented.

“We will prepare a joint memorandum for the London meet,” said BF protem chair Jeffrey Gapari Kitingan. “Two researchers are in London to gather material from the Rhodes Library in Oxford.”

Sarawak environmentalist John Anthony Brian briefed the meet on the progress made by the two Sarawak researchers in London. Read more

Journey To Sanggau

To Kalimantan Border

You need to have local knowledge, a sense of humour and a strong constitution for gory tales when you drive across the border into Kalimantan, some 90 minutes away from Kuching.

I discovered this while hitching a ride in a “scout” vehicle commandeered by Salam Chimie, a small but sprightly middle-aged Iban from Selangau during a five-day cultural tour of Kalimantan Barat (KALBAR), the second largest of Indonesian Borneo’s four provinces. Read more

Entulu under fire

Posted by Jetty

The Borneo Post and SDNU forum
Deputy Minister for rural and regional development Joseph Entulu was severely criticised at a forum today (11 July 2009) for suggesting that the term “Dayak” be dropped as its connotation was uncivilized, uncouth and low class.

The forum, should the term ‘Dayak’ be dropped, was organised by The Borneo Post in collaboration with the Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU).

Five panel speakers addressed some 150 participants, the majority of them were professionals, pensioners, businessmen and university students.

Dayak Term
SDNU publicity chief Dr. John Brian Anthony said that the term “Dayak” was used anthropologically to describe the natives of Borneo.

He said: It is sillier to suggest dropping the term ‘Dayak’. He must be drunk. Otherwise he is playing to the gallery of those who are against the term ‘Dayak’.

“It is our intention to bring all the natives together under the name of Dayak, but there are people who think that the Dayaks are threat. That is why Malaysian Dayak Congress (MDC) cannot be registered because it is considered a security threat to the nation,” he said. Read more

Association Should Stay Apolitical – Blogger Dr. John Brian Anthony

Associations Should Stay Apolitical - Dr John Brian

KUCHING: All associations should remain apolitical even though they can work closely with the government of the day to achieve their respective objectives.

Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU) publicity chief Dr. John Brian Anthony said as associations play useful role in the society, they should not deviate from their objectives.

“If they have no useful objectives, they should not have been registered in the first place,” he said.

However they should remain non-political otherwise their intentions and decisions will be biased and they would eventually deviate from their original objectives, he told The Borneo Post yesterday.

Brian, an active blogger in the style of dayakbaru, said the association-government link should be a two-way process and not a situation where one is dominant over the other. Read more

Rumah Dayak Jalan Satok

Written by Dr. John Brian Anthony

Many Dayakbaru members mentioned about the SDNU handling of Rumah Dayak in Satok, and the failure for the building to be completed till today. Many has even “associate” the failure to complete the building with Dayak inability to do anything well. That is the mentality and level of thinking we have to deal with today.

I must say, all are said for good purpose and intention to improve ourselves. But some say it in the spirit that Dayak are not capable of moving forward. So Dayak better surrender their future and live in the hand of other races in Sarawak. To some of us, Dayak are hopeless people. Is it so?

To help better understand the issue Dayakbaru would benefit from the following update. Read more

Can we make Dayak’s Non Governmental Organization to work as one?

This is an individual perspective on “Can we make Dayak’s NGO to work as one?”. This idea stemmed out of an earlier challenge, that is “Can Sarawak Dayak National Union be made as the Umbrella body to all Dayak Organization?”.

Why is this an important step forward to the Dayak?
The ever changing political environment, opportunities and challenges is a fact of life that the Dayak must accept. This idea of getting all Dayak NGO to work as one is to challenge the current paradigm that Dayak ethnic group is pursuing separate and specific goals but is not driving the Dayak to a greater political progress and economic achievement. SDNU – UMBRELLA BODY FOR DAYAKS ASSOCIATION?

From the Borneo Post 20th April 2008

Need for balance in SDNU make-up

BY virtue of its name, the Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU) should constitute the biggest single Dayak body in Malaysia.

With so many ethnic associations being formed nowadays, the SDNU’s role has been exponentially downplayed with the union being made to look bereft of a clear objective and direction. Read more
